what is a pimple?

A pimple is the result of many different factors coming together to form a raised, inflamed bump just beneath the surface of the skin. When excess oil, debris and bacteria get trapped within the follicle, the immune system triggers the inflammatory response to try and rid the skin of impurities. Even healthy skin can experience pimples, since the hormonal signals that trigger oil production and inflammation are easily stimulated by changes in diet, psychological stress and puberty.

The word ‘hormone’ comes from the Greek word for ‘impetus,’ and hormones are most active during the teenage years, when the brain uses hormonal signals as the impetus for the body to grow and mature. During this time of hormonal surges and fluctuations, the skin is often a reflection of the changes within. Androgens, the male hormones found in both males and females, can trigger the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, or sebum. At the same time there can be a proliferation of cells in the follicle neck, leading to clogged follicles bulging with excess sebum. This becomes the perfect environment for bacteria such as P. acnes to thrive and cause inflammation. When this becomes a common situation on the skin, it is known as the pilosebaceous disease, acne vulgaris.

But breakouts aren’t all created equal. As mentioned, there are a number of factors involved and sometimes it comes down to incorrect product usage. When a stripping cleanser like soap is used on oily skin, it actually triggers the skin to make even more oil! The key is not to get skin squeaky clean, but to provide the necessary hydration while controlling excess sebum and bacterial activity. Exfoliation is a great way to not only enhance the penetration of moisturizers, but also to remove dulling cell build-up that can clog follicles and trap oils and bacteria inside.

what can be done to help treat, clear and prevent teen acne? introducing clear start™

We need to take a multi-step approach to achieve clearer skin. The skin health experts at Dermalogica® have created Clear Start™ for younger, breakout-prone skin. This multitasking system of sophisticated products features potent yet gentle formulations that get the job done without irritating or drying out the skin, as do many other acne-controlling products in the market. Our daily three-step regimen, combined with targeted products for extra clearing, will reveal healthy, clear skin by:

 Removing impaction plugs

 Killing bacteria

 Controlling excess sebum

 Reducing inflammation

3 Clear Start™ Dermalogica 4

Out with the old, in with the new! By exfoliating the skin to remove surface cells that have not been shed, we can prevent clogged pores that trap bacteria and excess sebum. Salicylic Acid is well known to not only exfoliate the skin, but also to provide anti-inflammatory benefits to skin. Physically exfoliating microbeads also help clear up pores and deep clean the skin to prevent blackheads and comedones.

Control that oil slick! By keeping overactive sebaceous glands in check, we can reduce oily shine without dehydrating the skin. This is key to keeping skin healthy, hydrated and shine-free. The following ingredients are known sebum-regulating agents: Niacinamide, extracts of African Whitewood Bark, Meadowsweet, Saw Palmetto and Sesame Seed.

Banish bacteria! By controlling bacteria on the skin’s surface and in the follicle, we can reduce the inflammation that leads to large, painful and red pustules. The following ingredients are known anti-bacterial agents: Meadowsweet, Salicylic Acid, Tea Tree Oil, Sulfur and Colloidal Silver.

Keep calm and carry on! By keeping inflammation under control, we can help the healing process and soothe inflamed skin. The following are known anti-inflammatory and reparative agents: Green Tea, Camphor, Oleanolic Acid, White Birch Extract and Licorice.
