On Friday evening, December 1 st , the Emmaus Moravian Church choir sang carols on the stairway, now a popular Christmas tradition at 218 Main Street. The carolers were accompanied by choir director Martha Cox Popichak at our Hammond electric organ (donated in 2015 by Schantz Funeral Home). We had more than 300 visitors for “Old Fashioned Christmas Open House” on Saturday, December 2 nd . Engineer Al’s “Find the Snowman” game at the Putz was a big hit with the kids. It was so big a hit that more candy had to be brought in. “Santa & Mrs. Claus at the Museum” on Saturday, December 9 th , now another popular tradition at 218 Main Street, made the front page headline of the East Penn Press on December 20 th . Here are some recent additions to the Museum’s collection that we’ve been anxious to share with you: Pamela (Baumgartner) Luchsinger (Emmaus Class of 1963) donated this amazing quilt made by her grandmother, Anna Matilda (Gumph) Iobst. Evidently Anna, born in 1887, worked at the Keystone Silk Mill on Minor Street for a period of time that began prior to 1909. She made the quilt from small discarded pieces of silk manufactured at the mill. This is a treasure! It was passed on to Pamela’s mother, Kathleen (Iobst) Baumgartner. Pamela used it when she was a child. She donated the quilt in August while she and her husband, Jack, were visiting Emmaus in celebration of their 50 th anniversary. Thanks again to Pam and once again congratulations to a really first-class couple. Two of Paul Rinker’s grandchildren, Kathy and Barb Rinker, donated this rare photo of the Emmaus Last Man’s Club taken in September, 1942. On November 8, 1934, at a meeting of the Firemen’s Committee of the 1934 Emaus Diamond Jubilee, a motion was passed to form an organization known as The Last Man’s Club for a period of 25 years hence. It was resolved to hold an annual meeting on or near the time of the Diamond Jubilee (July 29 th to August 5 th ) to commemorate that occasion and to look forward to the 1959 Centennial. First row: John Kiess, Edwin Stephen, Charles Heller, Robert Stoneback (honorary member), Edwin Trexler, Henry Hinkel. Second Row: Charles Brensinger, Ray Laubach, Thomas Diehl, J. Robert Druckenmiller, George Stephen. Third row: Harrison Kratzer, Albert Mohr, Warren Polster, Walter Fenstermaker, Paul Rinker. So, who was the last surviving member of The Last Man’s Club? Andrew did the research. It was Edwin Stephen. Thank you again to the Rinker family. Happy New Year! Donald Cunningham, Emmaus High School Class of 1941, was the Music Director at Guilford High School, Guilford Connecticut, in 1959 and brought his acclaimed high school band and chorus to Emmaus in celebration of the Emmaus Centennial. In addition to a concert performance at the high school auditorium at 8 P.M. on Friday night, August 28th, the

band marched in the Centennial Military Day Parade on Saturday, August 29th. The Guilford students stayed at the homes of Emmaus residents who served as their hosts and hostesses during the multi-day visit. The concert was sponsored by the East Penn Union School Band Club. The band’s visit to Emmaus was sponsored by The Guilford Board of Education, The Guilford Fire Company and The

Guilford Junior Chamber of Commerce.Donald’s father, George Cunningham, had been Emaus Burgess during the great Diamond Jubilee of 1934. (George, for your information, was the Chairman-in-charge at the Centennial Veterans’ Memorial Service on November 8, 1959.) The Guilford Band concert was one of the Centennial events tape recorded by Clarence Weidner (also known as “Connie” Weidner) as part of the Industrial Committee’s Time Capsule project. The Connie Weidner reel-to-reel tapes, in their

protective tins, were sealed in the capsule for 50 years. After the tapes were removed in 2009 Rich Chartrand did an expert job of transferring all of the recordings to an 8-disc set of CD’s. The Connie Weidner tapes remain a part of the Historical Society’s Centennial collection. In his taped remarks Connie explains that the concert was performed “under the most trying conditions possible with temperature in the high 90’s, humidity in the 90’s and not a breath of air stirring”. The students were given the option of wearing their summer uniforms, not quite as dressy as the winter uniforms, but they decided to make the better appearance. The little majorette in the photo, marching behind the color guard, is Donald Cunningham’s daughter, Margery

Cunningham, who was then going into the third grade. When she attended Guilford High School she became Head Majorette and also played alto and bass clarinet in the band. She went on to a career in

teaching. Margery Cunningham-Schleuter lives in Clinton, Connecticut and is a member of the Emmaus Historical Society. Sincere best wishes to you, Margery, up there in Connecticut, from your friends here in Emmaus. ◙

Wednesday, April 18, 2018 "Route 100 Through the Goshenhoppen Region in the Early 1900s" - The path of the road now known as PA Route 100 in Berks and Lehigh Counties today differs in many places from what it was 100 years ago. In a thoroughly illustrated power point presentation by historian and author Aaron Heckler, this program follows the old road alignment as it ran northward from Boyertown to Shimerville in the early 1900s. Utilizing photographic picture postcards, mostly dating from 1905-1920, attendees will see and learn about the numerous hotels, stores, businesses, churches and other interesting enterprises and people that imparted life into the villages and towns along this important thoroughfare. In developing this collection of images Mr. Heckler has paid special attention to choose those that include sites and scenes directly along the Old Route 100 roadway.

Saturday, January 8, 1938School Board Has Meeting

With Ralph Weidner in the chair, the school board, all members attending, held its monthly session in its chamber in the Washington building Thursday night. Superintendent of schools H.J. Yeager submitted a report for last month interesting details of which were: 1532 pupils enrolled; average attendance last month 94 percent; quarantines reported: measles 53, chicken pox 2 and whooping cough 2; number of visitors of the schools during National Education Week: Lincoln building 221, Central building 181, Washington building 196, Jefferson building 31 and Stevens building 15 for a total of 664.

The secretary was instructed to apply to the WPA authorities for the second half of the book binding project. The board granted the use of the high school gymnasium one night a week for a WPA recreational project, providing the athletic council can arrange suitable dates.

The matter of the proposed grading and fence building projects at the high school athletic field was discussed at length as the WPA authorities demanded a yes or no at this time. The directors are in favor of constructing a fence under WPA labor; the only expense for the board would be for materials which would cost approximately $2850. However, financing this is the problem and several of the directors, therefore, voted reluctantly against the project as the board could not definitely decide if and how it could finance it.

Saturday, January 15, 1938Emaus Upsets Dope in Beating Palmerton, 36-31Emaus High's basketeers last night pulled one of the real upsets of the season in the Lehigh Valley Interscholastic League scoring a surprising 36 to 31 victory over Coach Bill Braucher's Palmerton High quintet at Emaus.

It was the first time in the history of Emaus High that it had ever defeated Palmerton High in basketball and after its torrid battle with the league leading Northampton team last week was a top-heavy favorite to win last night's game. Palmerton got off to a fast start leading 11-9 at the end of the first period. At half time the two teams were deadlocked at 17-17 and then in the third period Emaus stepped away to a 31-22 advantage that Palmerton was unable to overcome in the closing period.

Journey Into the Past ~ 80 Years AgoResearched by Andre Fatula

Editor's Note: Used in the context of the time, "Dope" was slang for information or data.

Palmerton High was a basketball power in the 1930s winning the LVL title six times and the District XI championship on three occasions - 1932, 1933, 1934. The 1932 district champs reached the eastern final only to lose to Old Forge. The 1933 team did not survive the first round of play-off games. The 1934 team lost in the second round to Reading High.*

Wednesday, January 19, 1938Pupils to Give Program TonightThe pupils of the Central school building will present their annual program featuring an operetta tonight at 7:30 in the high school auditorium.

The operetta in two acts is entitled "Taffy Ann" and is by Beatrice Marie Casey and Harold Wansborough. It will be presented by a cast of 16 children augmented by a chorus of 60 voices and is directed by Errol K. Peters, supervisor of music and supervised by Kathleen Iobst, assisted by Mrs. Lila Neimeyer and Floyd Laudenslager. Carol Knappenberger will be the pianist.

The cast will consist of: Gerald Grim, Mary Jane Walter, Betty Mae Sell, Richard Wieand, Virginia Wilson, Edwin Fogel, Leanna Burian, William Dimmig, Vilma Kneller, Eugene Walters, LeRoy Kneller, Betty Kneller, LaVerne Schaeffer, Mary Jane Lutsey, Shirley Leister and Wilberta Fegley. Between the acts Joy Wambold will give a toe dance.

The stage settings were made by Thomas Schrader and Harvey Walbert of the teaching faculty; the costumes for the imps by Miss McLean and the arbor by Henry Gruber, the florist.

Friday, January 28, 1938Opening of Craumer's New StoreThe grand opening of Craumer's new variety 5 cents to $1 store, which has moved from 6th and Chestnut Sts. to its new quarters at 4th and Chestnut Sts. will be held tomorrow. Promptly at 9 a.m. Chief Burgess Robert J.S. Butz

will unlock the store, admitting the public for the store's inspection and for the transaction of business.

The exterior of the building has been modernized with large plate glass windows and the interior, which boasts of approximately 2,400 square feet has been neatly arranged with the placement of complete new and modern fixtures.

Mr. Craumer has increased his lines of merchandise from 5 cents to $1 and will carry large selections so that Emaus really has a real up-to-date certified store. The store located in town five years ago and its fine progress made it necessary that Mr. Craumer sought this expansion and better centralized location. The public is invited to come to the opening tomorrow.

Friday, February 11, 1938Buys Property at TriangleDr. Harry W. Dundore, veteran local druggist and proprietor of Dundore's Drug store, has purchased the business property of Albert F. Buck on 4th St. at the Town Triangle. On this property at present is located the Renninger News Agency, the John Bohrer Meat Market and an apartment on the second floor.

As the new purchaser has definite plans for razing these buildings and erecting a new structure, Mr. Buck felt that he was complying with the wishes of Burgess R.J.S. Butz, who in his first annual message to council, asked for improvements to the town and the beautifying and modernizing of properties, especially at this important town business center.

The purchased tract has a frontage of approximately 45 feet and a varied depth of 54 feet to 63 feet. Dr. Dundore contemplates razing these buildings this summer and then erect a business building into which he will move his drug store. On the second floor, an apartment will be erected.

Dr. Dundore came to Emaus in 1905 when he purchased the drug store of William Ortt located in the building, which for the last number of years, is St. Margaret's Episcopal Church. After a few years Dr. Dundore moved his business to the bank building where he has been conducting a successful business for the last 31 years.

Dr. Dundore is being complimented for his step for the reason that it will enhance the beauty of properties at the Triangle and in addition it will allow him to expand his drug store business.

Valentine candy in heart-shaped boxes, 25 cents to $2. Dundore's Drug Store.

Saturday, February 12, 1938Received Athletic Fence BidAlbert B. Wieand, local school director, received an attractive bid for the erection of a fence and gates around the High School athletic field; the bid being for $1500, this to be for materials needed in the erection. The fence proposition and question has been under discussion at

school board meetings and throughout town for some time -- there being a great deal of favorable comments for the project. However, while the school board is in favor of a fence, the board at a recent meeting, withdrew its application to the WPA authorities for the reason that it could not at this time see its way clear to properly finance it. It is believed that if sufficient sentiment can be fostered for the fence that it might yet become a reality with the aid of WPA labor. Mr. Wieand will present the bid to the board at its next meeting.

Tuesday, March 15, 1938Burgess Robert J.S. Butz and the police department, which received a number of complaints regarding dogs running around at large, have decided to put their feet down on this nuisance. Consequently, the State dog law, which was passed in 1921, will be strictly enforced with no exceptions and no partiality. The burgess is not opposed to dogs or pets but he insists that reasonable restraint be put on them, since they are running around destroying property, garbage and the like, in addition to the possibility of mad dogs running around.

The law states that it is the duty of every police officer to seize and detain any dog which is not properly tagged and is found running loose on the highway or on property other than that of the dog owner, if the dog is not accompanied and chained or leashed to the owner. If the officer is in pursuit of the dog, he may enter any premises and any building in order to affect its capture. Police officers and constables are to kill any dogs running loose. This decree of the burgess will go into effect today.

Sunday, March 20, 1938Local Physician Marks MilestoneCongratulations are again in order to one of the oldest practicing physicians in the state. Dr. H.T. Wickert, veteran Emaus doctor, will tomorrow round out 62 years of practice. He is justly proud of this enviable record of fine service, a record of which but few can boast of in this state.

Dr. Wickert is one of the oldest alumni of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, where he was graduated in 1876. He still remembers this occasion mainly for the reason that he was "shaking in the knees" when the commencement speaker looked over the class of graduates and stated that probably only 50 percent of them would be successful physicians. This set Dr.

Wickert to thinking and like many other poor boys in the class, he started his practice with but a doctor's kit and little equipment. That was the era in which doctors answered calls on horseback or by buggy or sleigh.

He established an office in Milford Square, Bucks County,

Page 10: 218 Main Street Emmaus, PA 18049  · • Purchase Your Card:•Pur chase Your Card: ... Each cardholder also receives additional bonus coupons on each Maddness Card - one-time use

10

where he had a successful practice for 20 years. Seeing then that Emaus was rapidly developing, he transferred to that town 42 years ago. There, his success was enlarged and he was much in demand and often, due to his wide experience, is consulted in serious cases.

He has no complete record of all his cases but he knows that if all the grownup babies he brought into this world would pay him a surprise visit, he would have to engage the state police to keep the thousands of them in line. Some of them are now grandparents and great grandparents.

Not only is Dr. Wickert to be complimented for his medical record, but despite his vast practice, he has always been civic-prided and served two terms as Burgess of Emaus. He has always been affiliated with organizations and movements which tendered for the welfare and improvement of the community. The doctor, who is an octogenerian, will reach another milestone next month. However, he feels that by sticking to his practice that it is the best for his health.

Wednesday, March 30, 1938Burgess Issues Last CallBurgess R.J.S. Butz, who recently started negotiations for a WPA curb, pavement and gutter project in town, states this will be the last week in which persons can forward their applications to him. Burgess Butz is confident that if he can secure a sufficient number of applications from property owners in town who desire to have repairs made to their curbs, gutters or pavements that he can make them all one WPA project that persons applying to have such work done must pay only for materials used.

The burgess has already received some applications, but more are necessary. Blank applications can be secured in the Butz Co. office.

Burgess Appoints Emaus CommitteeHaving received numerous requests, Burgess Robert J.S. Butz has taken steps for the changing of the name Emaus to Emmaus. The Burgess announced the appointment of the following committee to lay plans for this change: United States Commissioner Theodore R. Gardner, Rev. H.A. Kuehl, Mrs. William S. Iobst, Mrs. Gerald S. Backenstoe, Laura Reese, Charles H. Brensinger, Beatrice A. Fehnel, Charles S. Stroh, Esther C. Iobst, Venus Stephen, Henry M. Knauss, George Peguesse, Alfred Kistler, John Fisher, George S. Stephen, Howard K. Deischer, Helen Schaeffer, Moses Diefenderfer, Harold A. Giering, Rev. Charles Bornman, Fred T. Reinsmith, Walter E. Wieand, Mrs. Peter W. Leisenring and Harry G. Haberstumpf.

For the last several weeks, petitions for the change of name were floated in town. The committee will meet in town hall Thursday night at 8 o'clock.

Thursday, March 31, 1938Business Show Opens TonightThe annual Emaus business show sponsored by the Charles Henry Schaeffer Post, American Legion, will open tonight in the Emaus Owls home Main Street. The show will continue Friday and Saturday night. The hall has been neatly decorated and nearly twenty various booths have been erected. Patrons will have the privilege of seeing and attending the cooking school. Entertainment will be offered each night. There will be no admission charge. ◙
