Viking currently offers three different shock/strut series as follows:
* Warrior™: Valved for vehicles driven on the street, with the ability to tune for handling and drag race track events
* Voyager™: Valved for maximized comfort and overall ride quality
* Crusader™: Valved specifically for serious competition use only (drag, pro-touring/time attack)
Digressive: Forces ramp up quickly and flatten out as shaft speed increases
Linear: Forces increase proportionately with shaft speed
Progressive: Forces increase exponentially with shaft speed
Regressive: Forces ramp up quickly and eventually decrease with shaft speed
Viking Warrior™
and Crusader™
shocks and struts are available in either double adjustable or triple adjustable, while Viking Voyager™
shocks and
struts are available in double adjustable only. Viking does not make non-adjustable or single adjustable. A non-adjustable shock has fixed valving.
There is no way for you to change the valving characteristics without opening up the shock, many of which are not rebuildable anyway. A single
adjustable often changes only one side of the equation, which is most often rebound in our market, with the compression being fixed. Or, worse yet,
there are single adjustable shocks that simultaneously change both compression and rebound with the turn of a knob, which makes for a snappy
marketing tagline but not-so-good results, as that is generally not desired.
The only way to truly maximize performance or comfort is through the ability to tune compression and rebound completely independent of one
another. There are also positive side benefits of eliminating the non and single adjustable options, such as maximizing stroke length, not to mention
the huge benefit of maximizing economies of scale to bring down the production cost allowing us to pass the savings to you through significantly
reduced prices.
As mentioned above, the Viking double adjustable shocks allow you to independently adjust the softness or firmness of compression and rebound.
So, what does the Viking triple adjustable do? The Viking triple adjustable breaks out the compression adjustment into two adjustments - low speed
and high speed. The rebound adjustment is exactly the same as the on the double adjustable shock.
Why is this break-out of compression into low speed and high speed important or needed? In order to answer that question, it is beneficial to first
explain the characteristics of the force curves of shock absorbers. The curves can be shaped as follows:

On compression valving, the curve is generally either digressive or linear. The curve for compression cannot be progressive as the shaft speeds
experienced would cause forces to build too high, causing failure of the shock or some other component.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW
The standard Warrior™
and Crusader™
double adjustables have digressive compression forces as shown in the graph below:
The different series of Viking adjustable shocks come with the following number of adjustments:
Compression positions (including zero)
Compression low-speed positions (incl zero)
Compression high-speed positions (incl zero)
* Lightweight aluminum twin-tube design with a sleek clear anodized finish.
* Adjustment knobs: Labeled with a “C” for compression and an “R” for rebound with distinctive clicks. The triple adjustable also has a 1/8" hex
for high-speed compression adjustment.
* Each click on the adjustment works and makes a change. There are no dead clicks. That is why all Viking tuning recommendations are from full
soft. Other shock brands often recommend tuning from full tight, as often the first 10+ clicks provide no changes to the valving.
* By not offering non-adjustable or single adjustable, Viking is able to maximize stroke for each body length, ensuring you get the most travel
out of your shock or strut.
* Aluminum, precision machined piston with a deflective disc and a P.T.F.E. / bronze piston seal.
* Hard chrome plated, centerless ground piston rod (shocks utilize a 5/8" rod; struts utilize a 7/8" rod).
* Three-step sealing system.
* All shocks and struts can be rebuilt or revalved by the Viking factory or any authorized rebuilder. CrusaderTM rebound valving range may be
easily revalved by the user.
* In coil-over shocks, Viking provides bearing mounts as standard, not the less expensive poly mounts. Bearings perform better in supporting the
weight of the vehicle and provide for misalignment when needed, thereby relieving unneccesary stress on the piston rod and seals. They are also
very durable and don't break down like poly mounts do over time.
* In bearing mount shocks, Viking uses stainless steel bearing races, not inexpensive nylon race bearings like some competing brands.
* Left hand threads between the base and the body ensures that the shock/strut doesn’t come apart when adjusting the ride height, as can occur
with certain other brands.
* Viking's double adjustable shocks and struts are priced close to the single adjustable price of most other manufacturers. Viking triple adjustable
shocks and struts are priced close to the double adjustable price of most other manufacturers. Viking focuses on independently adjustable
compression and rebound shocks and struts only, which means a lower price for you!
* Two year materials and workmanship warranty.
* Each shock and strut is hand built, tested, and serialized in our Lakeville, Minnesota factory.

As shown in the chart, the compression force is digressive, meaning the forces ramp up quickly and
blow off as shaft speed increases. Each turn of the adjustment knob changes the force curve
throughout the velocity of the shaft, at low and high speed. Often, these tuning adjustments provide
what is necessary for performance or comfort.
WARRIORTM CRUSADERTM
The next quesion may be, what level of adjustability (double or triple) is right for me? People often think this can be a difficult question with long,
explanatory answers. However, the fact is, the answer is extremely simple. If your budget allows, a triple adjustable is the shock to purchase. Any
shock that provides more tuning capability is better period! Now, other companies may steer people away from a triple adjustable due to the
significant price tag, mounting considerations due to an added canister, or complexity in tuning. However, these are not issues with the Viking triple
adjustable, as the shock is in a single unit that does not require a canister. Further, all of the adjustment knobs have distinct clicks, and the tuning
guide provides easy instructions for starting points based on the series and use of the vehicle. Lastly, the Viking triple adjustable price point is
unreal and has never been seen before in the market, making the triple adjustable attainable for all!

What if you had the ability to alter the force based on the shaft speed of the shock absorber? Now
you could have higher force at 6 inches per second with lower force at 2 inches per second. The
force range at low speeds becomes an area rather than fixed lines. For comfort alone, it would be
huge to tune this way. For performance, there is a whole new realm of possibilities.
Now that we can control the forces seen at low speed, it opens up the ability to increase the max
high-speed forces. It is now possible to have a shock with a much larger range of potential
compression force without having a negative impact on the forces being generated at lower shaft
speeds. For example, a shock that previously had a max force at 6 inches/sec. of 300 lbs. can now
have a max force of 800 lbs.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW
The Viking Warrior™ "SX" (Street Xtreme) valving is performance oriented - it provides a great ride on the street but is capable of generating higher
forces for more competitive track events.
WARRIOR TM SERIES
Viking Warrior™ double adjustable shocks have a digressive force curve for both compression and rebound. This means that forces increase
quickly at low shaft speeds and level off at higher shaft speeds. This valving provides excellent low speed control with sufficient high speed forces.
The large adjustment range allows the user to adjust from comfortable cruising to performance at the track.
The Warrior™ triple adjustable is available in two valving options. The "SP" (Street Performance) valving has a range that can provide anything
from an awesome, comfortable ride to performance settings for track events. Note how the compression low speed force range becomes an area
rather than fixed lines.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW
Please note that Crusader shocks are intended for "Competition Only" applications and are NOT intended for street use. When vehicles are off-
track or being trailered, they must be set at Viking's specified off-track settings.
These patented shock absorbers and struts feature an interchangeable needle and seat design. The rebound
valving adjustment range can be changed without completely disassembling the shock absorber. With the
shock or strut in a vice on its side in the fully extended position, the rebound knob can be taken off, and the
needle and seat combination can be changed out. This can be accomplished with basic hand tools. There are
no expensive “special tools” required to be purchased from Viking. The process is similar to jetting a carburetor.
Obviously, it is critical that everything be kept extremely clean, as there are very small orifices that must be kept
free of debris.
The patented Viking Crusader™ shock absorbers and struts were developed based on requests from the pro-touring community, along with the
small tire and high horsepower drag race customers. With these vehicles, there are situations that require rebound forces in excess of what
standard passive adjustable shock absorbers and struts can provide. The other factor in our design parameters was the frustration that adjustable
shocks and struts, in general, are too complex for the average person to be able to revalve.
From these requests, the Crusader™ was born. These shock absorbers and struts have various valving options dependent on the vehicle use and
vehicle specifications. The CrusaderTM is available is either a double adjustable shock, with independent compression and rebound tuning or a triple
adjustable where the compression adjustment is separated into low-speed and high-speed adjustments. The rebound valving has a progressive
curve that is strictly determined via orifice control. A progressive valve will have a softer low speed force that ramps up very quickly as shaft speed
increases. However, do not let this description deceive, as these shocks and struts can generate huge forces at low speeds, depending on the
needle and seat combination selected. In fact, this line of shock absorbers and struts produces forces far greater than nearly all others on the
market. Depending on the needle and seat combination selected, the adjustment range can cover a very large range or a more narrow range with
very small defined increments.
The patented Viking Voyager™ double adjustable shocks have a digressive force curve with a fixed bleed for compression and a soft progressive
rebound. This provides for softer, linear low-speed forces for maximized ride comfort. All Voyager™ shocks are equipped with a bump stop. Also,
forces quickly increase at higher shaft speeds. This allows for adequate vehicle control to handle various road events. The Voyager™ series is
unique, as it is a double adjustable shock designed solely for cruising. With many multi-purpose adjustable shocks, the tuning range for cruising is
limited to a few settings on the softer adjustments, whereas the Viking Voyager™ provides a large, tuneable adjustment range specifically designed
for cruising, allowing numerous options to dial-in your particular desired ride quality.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW
The CrusaderTM triple adjustable shocks have a rebound adjustment that has a progressive curve, as shown in the valving options on the prior
page. For compression, there is a low and high speed adjustment. There are two standard CrusaderTM triple adjustable compression valving
options: "H" valving, which is used in handling applications; and "R" valving, which is used in drag racing applications. As shown in the graphs, the
separation of the low and high-speed adjustments allow for a much firmer maximum force. Note how the compression low speed force range
becomes an area rather than fixed lines.
Crusader TM Triple Adjustable Compression Valving:
Crusader TM Double Adjustable Compression Valving:
There are two standard CrusaderTM double adjustable compression
valving options: "A" has a digressive curve and is used for the drag race
shocks. "G" has a firmer digressive curve but has a fixed bleed for softer
low shaft speeds. The "G" valving is used in handling applications to
provide for more traction at low shaft speeds, especially on a hot, slick
track that may be slightly rough or for when experiencing surface
transitions or curbing. There is a custom order "R" valving available
which is a firm, digressive compression curve. This custom valving, for
example, is often used in the rear shocks of extremely high horsepower
cars with independent rear ends that, for whatever reason, do not go to
a triple adjustable.

VIKING PERFORMANCE HIGH-TRAVEL COIL-OVER SPRINGS
WARNING: Cancer and Reproductive Harm - www.P65Warnings.ca.gov Page 8
-
In order to correctly determine the optimal spring rate for your vehicle, it is necessary to calculate the force (in pounds) required to get your
vehicle to the proper ride height. Before getting into the specific formulas, the sprung corner weight of the vehicle must be determined,
along with the preload on the coil spring at ride height. From there the rate of spring can be selected based on the ride the individual
desires, the availabilty of adjustment on the coil-over shock and the ability of the coil spring to provide enough travel.
Note: Viking designed its coil-over shocks with the longest threads in the industry providing for the most adjustability. This increase in
adjustability is only useful if the coil spring has enough travel to utilize this large range of adjustment. Viking coil springs are designed
to provide for the maximum level of travel at the lightest weight, giving the Viking coil-over shock / coil spring combination the largest
adjustment range in the industry.
SPRUNG CORNER WEIGHT (SCW):
Ideally, the individual corner weights of the vehicle would be determined by utlizing a scale. If only the total front or rear weight is known,
simply cut it in half to estimate the weight at each corner. Be sure to account for the driver, passsengers, and cargo that will be
included when the vehicle is being driven. Next, this corner weight must be reduced by the unsprung weight to derive the sprung
corner weight (SCW).
The unsprung weight is the vehicle weight that is not supported by the springs. These types of components include the wheel/tire assembly;
the brake components, such as rotors, calipers, and pads or the brake drums, shoes, and related components; steering knuckles; wheel
bearings; and the axle housing, ring & pinion, axle, differential, etc. There is also a hybrid weight category for some components where the
definition is not clear and concise. These include the shock absorbers, coil springs, leaf springs, upper and lower control arms (front and/or
rear), trailing arm, ladder bar, panhard bar, and driveshaft, to name a few. There is a general 50/50 rule that states 50 percent of the weight of
hybrid components is considered unsprung and 50% of the weight is considered sprung. While the accuracy of this can be and is debated, it is
often used for simplicity. As you can see, this calculation can prove cumbersome and difficult to determine. In general, the corner unsprung
weight on a vehicle will often lie between 75 and 150 pounds. All changes made to the vehicle must be considered when estimating the
unsprung corner weight based on the above given range.
Before moving on from this topic, it is important to discuss the on-going debates surrounding the benefits of reducing unsprung or
sprung weight. While it is argued whether or not reducing unsprung weight is more beneficial than reducing sprung weight and what
exactly the benefits are for straight-line improvements versus cornering, it is agreed upon that reducing unsprung or sprung weight
will improve handling and performance, period. This is why Viking designed its coil spring line to provide the greatest travel at the
lightest weight. Viking springs are often more than 25% lighter than the competitions' springs. That is like getting four Viking springs
on your vehicle for the weight of three of the competitions' springs. Work is often done to save ounces, which is important, as
everything adds up. However, Viking springs give you an opportunity to save pounds!
SPRING PRELOAD (SPL):
When a vehicle is at ride height, there will be a certain amount of preload on the spring. Most springs have a linear rate. For example,
a 200 pound spring rate means that it will take 200 pounds to compress the spring 1 inch. It will take an additional 200 pounds to compress
the spring a second inch, and so forth. This would mean a 200 pound spring that is compressed two inches at the vehicle's ride height
would be supporting 400 pounds, as long as it was mounted straight up and down. The amount of spring preload will also depend on
the stroke of the shock absorber. Recommended ride heights generally fall within 40% to 60% of the stroke available for either compression
or rebound of the shock absorber. Ideal set-ups will fall closer to having 60% available for compression and 40% available for rebound.
Sometimes a taller coil spring will be used where the spring will need to be compressed in order to mount it onto the shock absorber
prior to installation in the vehicle. If this is the case, this amount of preload will need to be accounted for when determining spring rate.
Using the theory that 60% will be available for compression, for a shock absorber that has a 5" stroke, the shock and therefore the spring,
will need to be compressed 2" in order to have 60% or 3" of the stroke available for compression when the vehicle is at ride height.
For a shock with an 8.75" stroke, the spring would be compressed 3.50", and so forth. An additional 1" of compression should be added
for raising the spring nut up the coil-over shock absorber, which will allow for tuning in either direction. After the amount of spring compression
is determined based on the stroke of the shock, the spring can be compressed further or less, depending on where the spring seat nut is on the
coil-over shock absorber. This allows for lighter or heavier spring rates to be utilized in order to satisfy the individual's desired ride.

CORRECTION FACTOR FOR SPRING MOUNTING ANGLE (CF):
If the coil-over shock absorbers, and therefore your coil springs, are mounted at an angle, a heavier spring will be needed to support the
same weight. A correction factor will need to be applied to the spring rate as determined if the spring is installed without a mounting
angle (i.e. straight up). Use the following chart to determine the correction factor to apply based on the mounting angle:
Shock Mounting
Angle
Correction
Factor
Shock Mounting
Angle
Correction
Factor
10° 0.98 30° 0.87
15° 0.97 35° 0.82
20° 0.94 40° 0.77
25° 0.91 45° 0.71
Once the proper correction factor is determined, simply divide the calculated spring rate with no mounting angle by the correction factor.
For example, if your shock is mounted at a 20° angle and the spring rate without a mounting angle was determined to be 200 pounds, the
proper spring rate for this application would be 225 pounds (200/.88=227).
The formulas will vary depending on whether you have a staight axle or independent suspension application.
For straight axles, the spring rate is calculated as follows:
Step 1: Determine the sprung corner weight (SCW) as discussed.
Step 2: Determine the spring preload as discussed.
Step 3: Divide the sprung corner weight by the spring preload.
SCW/SPL=calculated spring rate (CSR)
Step 4: Divide the calculated spring rate by the correction factor (CF).
If there is no mounting angle, the correction factor equals 1
so the calculated spring rate will equal the actual spring rate.
CSR/CF=actual spring rate (ASR)
Step 5: Determine a spring rate for the application desired. The rate
in step (4) provides for an excellent ride and terrific handling.
In general, a range of +/- 20% from this rate can be utilized.
This will allow for lighter rate applications, such as drag racing
to heavier rate applications, such as road racing.
For independent suspensions, the spring rate is calculated as follows:
D1: The distance from the pivot point of the control arm to the
mounting point of the shock/spring.
D2: The distance from the pivot point of the control arm to the
center of the ball joint.
Step 1: Determine the sprung corner weight (SCW) as discussed.
Step 2: Determine the spring preload as discussed.
Step 3: Divide D1 by D2 to calculate the motion ratio (MR).
Step 4: Divide the sprung corner weight by the motion ratio.
SCW/MR=required spring force (RSF)
Step 5: Divide the required spring force by the spring preload.
RSF/SPL=calculated spring rate (CSR)
Step 6: Divide the calculated spring rate by the correction factor (CF).
If there is no mounting angle, the correction factor equals 1
so the calculated spring rate will equal the actual spring rate.
CSR/CF=actual spring rate (ASR)
Step 7: Determine a spring rate for the application desired. The rate
in step (6) provides for an excellent ride and terrific handling.
In general, a range of +/- 20% from this rate can be utilized.
This will allow for lighter rate applications, such as drag racing
to heavier rate applications, such as road racing.

DETERMINING SPRING RATE
The following table shows recommended spring lengths and rates based on the Viking shock utilized. The spring preload is based on the ride height
being set with the shock compressed 40% from full extension. It is also assumed that the recommended spring length is used. If either of these
assumptions are altered, the preload may change, which will change the calculated spring rate. All rates provided are general starting points for tuning
the suspension based on street use. Rates will need to be adjusted based on the shock mounting angle and variations in set ups, loaded vehicle
weights, aftermarket modifications, etc.
INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION FRONT OR REAR WEIGHT (LBS.) WITH NO MOUNTING ANGLE (estimate only-can possibly change based on motion ratio)
STRAIGHT AXLE FRONT OR REAR WEIGHT (LBS.) WITH NO MOUNTING ANGLE
STRAIGHT AXLE FRONT OR REAR WEIGHT (LBS.) WITH NO MOUNTING ANGLE
INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION FRONT OR REAR WEIGHT (LBS.) WITH NO MOUNTING ANGLE (estimate only-can possibly change based on motion ratio)

APPLICATION GUIDE NOTES
Viking is constantly adding more applications. If the application is not listed, please call for assistance.
STEP 2: Determine the Desired Ride Height
How to Measure Ride Height:
STEP 3: Consider the Primary Intended Use of the Vehicle
DH (Drag High Horsepower): Choose this CrusaderTM race only valving for drag racing applications that make more than 600HP
or are running a small tire/drag radial.
IMPORTANT NOTE: CrusaderTM
series shocks are for COMPETITION USE ONLY and NOT designed for
street use. Failure to follow the off-track shock settings could result in damage to the shock and/or to you
and/or your vehicle and will void the warranty.
PT (Pro Touring / Time Attack): Opt for this CrusaderTM race only valving for track-focused autocross or road course vehicles.
CR (Cruise): Opt for the VoyagerTM
series when ride comfort is key.
SP (Street Performance): Choose this WarriorTM valving for vehicles that are mostly driven on the street with occasional track
use. The force range provides for a comfortable ride, but still allows for excellent performance.
SX (Street Xtreme): Choose this WarriorTM valving for vehicles that are mostly driven on the street but with more intense track
use. The force range allows for a comfortable ride, but provides high forces for competitive track events.
DL (Drag Low Horsepower): Select this CrusaderTM race only valving for drag racing applications making less than 600HP that
run a big tire.
This diagram indicates how Viking measures the ride height of an installed shock / strut. To get your ride height, make sure the
vehicle is sitting level on the ground, and take the measurement as shown below. When measuring a stud mount, measure to the
first washer that you come to as you move up or down the shock body (before the bushing). When measuring a t-bar or bearing
mount, measure from the center of the mount.
The Stock Mount Application Guide is divided into two categories for each application: Standard Height and Dropped Height. In
general, the standard height allows for factory to a 1.5" lowered ride height; however, a double adjustable front coil-over shock in
an A204 length or taller will usually allow for up to 2" lower ride height. The triple adjustable eyelet bottom shocks are 0.30" taller
than the double adjustable. This shifts the shock ride height range up 1/4" to 3/8". That is why only the double adjustable can
exceed the 1.5" drop on the front of vehicles for A204 length and taller. If a ride height outside of these ranges is desired (raised or
lowered), then please consult Viking to determine the proper part for the application. Please note that the ride height range
given is based on a shock/spring combination and not on other means, such as drop spindles.

APPLICATION GUIDE NOTES
STEP 4: Determine the Level of Adjustability
STEP 5: Understanding the Shock Options in the Application Guide
REAR C/O KIT: Viking bolt-in rear coil-over kits are available for many applications and allow the user
to adjust the rear ride height while improving ride quality and performance. These kits include rear coil-
over conversion brackets (when required), two double or triple adjustable coil-over shocks, two high
travel springs and all mounting hardware.
FRONT C/O KIT: Front coil-over kits are available for many popular applications and allow the user to
adjust the front ride height. These kits provide an easy, bolt-in coil-over conversion. Front coil-over
kits include the two front coil-over double or triple adjustable shocks or struts, two high travel springs
and all mounting hardware. Caution: while the Viking shock coil-over kits will work with factory
control arms, please verify that the condition and the thickness (minimum of 3/16") is
satisfactory to support the weight of the vehicle. Failure to do this may result in injury and/or
death.
NOTE: The front and rear coil-over kits listed in the application guide do not include spanner wrenches or thrust
bearings. We highly recommend adding the appropriate kit listed below:
All coil-overs listed in this guide include bearing mounts. We recommend bearings as they perform better in supporting the weight
of the vehicle and provide for misalignment when needed, thereby relieving unnecessary stress on the piston rod and seals. If
poly mounts are preferred, please call for proper part numbers.

7995-101 : Spanner Wrench Kit
7917-101 : Thrust Bearing Kit
SMOOTH SHOCK: Smooth body double or triple adjustable shocks are a good choice when you do
not want or need the ability to alter your stance. They are available for the front and/or rear of many
applications. These shocks offer bolt-in performance, and come complete with all mounting hardware.
Double Adjustable: Allows the user to tune the softness or
firmness of the compression (collapsing direction) and
rebound (extension) completely independently of each
other. COMPRESSION

NOTE: If your budget allows, the triple adjustable is the best choice for all situations.

Triple Adjustable: Rebound tuning is the same as the
double adjustable. The compression is split into two
adjustments - low speed and high speed. This allows for
much larger high speed forces without impacting low speed
feel or vice versa. The potential force range at lower speeds
becomes an area instead of fixed lines. This shock is a
single unit... no canister required.

If the C/O kit part numbers in the application guide have a "P", "R", "S", or "T" at the end of the part number, this letter
specifies the spring style that fits into the factory upper spring mount on the vehicle. See the spring section in this guide for
lengths and rates of the various styles shown in the table below.
UPPER
SPRING
STYLE
PIGTAIL
SQUARE,
GROUND FLAT
The spring rate affects how much the vehicle can be lowered. If a heavier spring rate is desired for a pro-touring set-up, the
heavier rate may not allow you to lower the vehicle to the desired stance.
Our application guide provides a baseline spring rate as well as the correct spring style for a given application based on both
engine combination and intended vehicle use. Typically, the SP (Street Performance) rate will be used as a baseline, with a lighter
rate being recommended for a drag race application, and a stiffer rate being recommended for a handling or pro-touring
application.
More research and discussion may be necessary to ensure the optimal spring rate if you are building a purpose-built vehicle
or the vehicle has been substantially altered.
For vehicles utilizing a strut, the strut body has a larger diameter, which may cause the spring to rub on the body. Utilizing a
taller and/or lighter rate will make this problem more likely.
The spring rates included in the application guide assume that the vehicle weight and motion ratio are reasonably near factory
specifications. The following are various issues to consider when selecting a spring rate:
Aluminum heads and an aluminum intake will not change the recommended spring rates in the application guide.
It is possible for a vehicle to be undersprung. Do not always assume that the lightest rate spring will provide for the best ride
quality.
