Definition of Terms
[7] Installation Precautions1. This manual contains installation procedures for the Nissan Murano tow hitch wiring harness and power
converter. In order to assure your safety and the proper installation of this kit, this manual should beread thoroughly. It is especially important that all precautions are completely understood before start-ing any installation task. General information and some illustrations outlined in this installation manual are from Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. service manuals.
2. If installation will be carried out by more than one person, pay special attention to ensure co-worker’s safety.
3. Make sure sufficient ventilation is provided while engine is running.
4. Take special care when working with heated, rotating, sliding, or moving parts to prevent bodily injury.
5. When raising the vehicle, refer to the appropriate manufacturer’s service manual.
6. Take special care to ensure clearance between components such as brake parts, fuel system, and elec-tric wires as specified in this publication.
7. If a problem is found with the tow hitch system due to installation, refer back to the instructions to correctthe problem.
[6] Tools Required1. Hand tools: 3/8 drive ratchet, 3/8 drive extension (300mm), sockets: 10mm, 13mm, combination wrench-
es: 8mm, 10mm, torque wrench (32 in•lb to 120 in•lb), small screwdriver, and true flush cutters.
2. Special tools: Nylon removal tool and plastic clip removal tool.
3. Other: Fender covers, proper clothing, isopropyl alcohol.

1. Remove package cover. Fold downboth rear seat backs. Using a 10mmsocket, remove the two (2) bolts, thenremove the deck latches using a nylontool to release the retaining clips.
• Open deck latch cover with nylonremoval tool.
• Remove the bolt using a 10mmsocket.
• Lift and remove the deck latch.

• The latch has an alignment tab that fits into a recess.
NOTE
[8] Preparation for Installation1. Park the vehicle on level flat ground.
2. Turn off the ignition and engage the parking brake.
3. Record all radio presets (if necessary).
4. Check that all vehicle lighting systems are functional (headlamps, brake lights, turn signals, side mark-ers, reverse lights, etc.).
5. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

2. Lift the seat back cover by using thenylon tool at clip locations.

3. Using a 13mm socket, remove the two(2) hinge bolts that secure the sparetire cover.

4B. Lift storage tray cover and removestorage tray.
4C. Remove spare tire cover.
• Some vehicles may have a different style storage tray. See step 5 for instructions on how to remove the storage tray.

• The open portion of the cover is to the rear driver’s side.

6. Using a nylon tool and a 10mmsocket, remove the driver’s side andpassenger’s side cargo latch.

• During reassembly, make sure alignment tab fits into the recess so latch sits flat.

5. Open the center storage tray and turnthe knobs counter clockwise to re-lease. Next, remove the storage tray.
• This style of storage tray is optional on some models.

8A. Remove the jack and handle from thepassenger side storage box.
8B. Using a 10mm socket and a 300mmextension, remove the two (2) bolts.
• Also remove the two (2) bolts from the driver’s side storage box.
NOTE
7. Using a nylon tool, remove the driver’sside and passenger’s side cargo netring (see image).
Remove the cargo net ring by:
• Locating the slot in the ring.
• Positioning the nylon tool in the slot.
• Prying carefully with the nylon tool torelease the cargo net ring.
• Pulling the cargo net ring from theside panel.

9C. Using a nylon tool, unlatch the clipslocated on the bottom of the rear scuffplate.

10. Remove spare tire.
• If equipped with a woofer, before removing the spare tire, unplug the lead wire from the woofer and remove the woofer.

12. Using a nylon tool, slightly lift the trimpanel. Locate and verify the clip at-tachments on the driver’s and passen-ger panels in two (2) places.
11. Partially remove the driver’s side andpassenger’s side rear door seal up tojust above the tail light.

14. Remove and discard rubber grommeton the driver’s side rear floor.
15. Remove each of the two clips off thevinyl protector.
16. Temporarily turn over the vinylprotector.
17. Remove the four bolts holding theBOSE amplifier.
18. Move the BOSE amplifier to gainaccess to the ground bolt.

2A. Mount the converter 3 .
2B. Locate the mounting hole on the lowerdriver’s side rear interior area. Nextlocate the area on the wheel well thatthe converter 3 will be mounted.
2C. Clean this area with isopropyl alcohol.
2D. Insert the M8 X 16 7 bolt from theback side, place the converter 3
bracket over the bolt and start the nut8 . Do not tighten at this time.
2E. Locate the correct mounting position,then remove the protective tape fromthe butyl tape on the back of the con-verter 3 .
2F. Place the converter on the mountingarea and then tighten the mountingbolt 7 and nut 8 to 13.5 N-m (0.39Kg-m 119 in-lb).
1. Connect the 8-pin connector and 1-pinconnector of the tow hitch wire har-ness to the converter 3 .

• Clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol. Mix one part isopropyl alcohol to one part of water.

4. Route the driver’s side section of theinterior wire harness to the driver’sside rear tail lamp 4-pin connector.Disconnect the driver’s side rear taillamp 4-pin connector.
5. Connect the driver’s side vehicle wireharness 4-pin connector (a) to the towhitch wire harness 12 4-pin connector(b). Connect the tow hitch wire 4-pin(c) and the tail lamp wire harness 4-pin connector (d) (with packing (foamtape)).
• Make sure after the interior wire harness is routed, the vehicle foam insulator is in its proper location.
NOTE
3. Route the tow hitch wire harness 12
ground lead to the ground bolt locatedon the passenger side, near the rearseat. Remove the existing ground boltand place the eyelet of the groundwire as shown. Reinstall the originalground bolt and tighten to 8 N-m (0.8Kg-m 71 in-lb)

8. Remove the tape from the vehicle1-pin connector.
6. Route the passenger side tail lampharness connectors of the tow hitchwire harness to the passenger sidetail lamp connectors. Disconnect thevehicle tail lamp connectors.
• Make sure after the interior wire harness is routed, the vehicle foam insulator is in its proper location.
NOTE
7. Connect the passenger side vehiclewire harness 4-pin connector (a) tothe tow hitch wire harness 12 4-pinconnector (b). Connect the tow hitchwire 12 4-pin (c) and the tail lamp wireharness 4-pin connector (d) (withpacking (foam tape)).

10. Secure the ground lead portion of thetow hitch wire harness 12 using three(3) plastic ties 5 .
11. Secure the ground lead portion of thetow hitch wire harness 12 using five(5) plastic ties 5 . (Driver’s side fromcenter area going rearward.)
9. Connect the vehicle 1-pin connectorand the tow hitch wire harness con-nector.

18. Apply packing (foam tape) 2 over thetow hitch wire harness 12 to secure itto the body.

[11] Installation Underside of the Vehicle
1a. Route the exterior harness 11 alongthe driver’s side of the hitch memberand secure it using the two (2) retain-er clips.
1b. Install the flat 4-pin connector on thetow hitch member using two (2) bolts(M5 X 16) 9 and nuts (M5) 10 . Torqueto 3.9 N-m (0.39 Kg-m, 35 in-lb).

112. Route the exterior harness 11 along
the driver’s side of the hitch memberand secure it using the one (1) retain-er clips and two (2) plastic ties (heatresistant) 6 .
3. Temporarily secure the exterior wireharness 11 to the hitch member, usingcloth tape, before installing it onto thevehicle.

5. Route the 4-pin exterior harness 11
connector, from under the vehicle andinstall the grommet into the vehicle.
• Pass the grommet all the way through the hole and then seat the grommet. Make sure the grommet is completely sealed.
NOTE
6. Secure the tow hitch wire harness usingone (1) plastic tie (heat resistant) 6 .
4. Install the hitch member onto thevehicle according to the hitch membermanufacturer’s specifications.

• Make sure the insulated portion of the wire harness is not pinched under the muffler hanger.

9. Remove the fuse box cover locatedon the driver’s side of the vehicle.

connector with the tow hitch wire har-ness 4-pin connector 12 .

10. Install the 30-amp fuse 4 in the fusebox located next to the driver’s sidefender.

• Some vehicles may already be equipped with a fuse from the factory. If there is a 30 amp fuse in this location, it is not necessary to install the fuse from the kit.

[12] Operational Verification The following checks are to be performed with the ignition switch in “ON” position and
the engine stopped.

– Right turn lights on both tester and ve-hicle are flashing.
– Stop lights on both tester and vehicle arelit.
– Left turn lights are flashing and right stoplights are lit on both tester and vehicle.
– Right turn lights are flashing and left stoplights are lit on both tester and vehicle.
– Both stop lights on the vehicle are lit,both turn/stop lights on the tester and theturn lights on the vehicle are flashing.
– Both turn/stop lights on the tester andthe stop lights on the vehicle are lit.
– Faults in wiring harness installation.
– Converter mounting.
– Wire harness.
– Plastic tie locations.
– Removed parts.
– Check the battery terminal for tightnesswith a 10mm socket and the battery cableangle is correct.
– Turn on headlamps.
– Turn on left turn signal.
– Turn on right turn signal.
– Apply foot brake.
– Turn on left turn signal and apply footbrake.
– Turn on right turn signal and apply footbrake.
– Turn on hazard lights switch.
– With hazard lights switch on, apply the footbrake.
– Turn off the hazard light switch, apply thefoot brake.
– All turn signal lights are flashing on bothtester and vehicle.
– Left turn lights on both tester and vehicleare flashing.
– Pushing or pulling of the converter byany outside force.
– Correct routing of the wire harness.
– Pinching of the wire harness.
– Position of the plastic tie locations.
– Scratches or other damages.
- Nut should have torque of 4.0 N•m [41 kgf•cm, 36 lbf•in]
– Marker and tail lights on both tester andvehicle are lit.

[13] Reinstallation of ComponentsReinstall all parts temporarily removed from the vehicle.

• Confirm that all rubber seals are properly installed on side panels and rear scuff plate.
CAUTION
1. Make sure the two (2) white clips are present and properly engaged.
2. Make sure the door seal is reinstalled properly on the driver’s side rear door.

Do the turn signal, stop and tail lamps on the vehicle side operate normally?
If the signal light inside the vehicle flashes rapidly, bulb may need to be replaced. Is the bulb bad?
Each lamp on the trailer side is not lit.
Each lamp on the trailer side is lit fora short time and then goes off.
Is the trailer connector securely connected?
Check the connection of trailer connector.
Is the trailer 30A fuse inthe fusebox OK?
Add or replace the 30A fuse.
Replace trailer lamp with a new one.
Is the trailer lamp burnedout?
Have additional trailer lamps been added?
Reduce number and size of lamps to maximum loads specified in Table 1.
Check that the fuse is not blown on the vehicle side.
Check trailer.
Replace vehicle bulb.
Disconnect trailer andcheck vehicle towingconnector with propertest light. Is function OK?
The wiring may be short-circuited, towing fuse may be blown, or converter may have malfunction.
