The Community Programme provides an opportunity for

all residents of Hanoi to become a part of the UNIS Hanoi

community through a variety of classes, workshops and sport

activities offered for adults and children. The Community

Programme should should strive to meet the continuing

education needs of both expatriate and Vietnamese

residents. While it is important for the Community Programme

to be financially self-sustaining, these classes, workshops

and activities are not necessarily a source of revenue for

UNIS. Rather, they are a vital component of the school’s

public relations efforts.

Registration and Payment• All registration is done online at www.unishanoi.org/

CommProg. Community Programme is unable to accept

registration via email or phone.

• We do not accept partial bookings for classes.

• Once you enroll in a course, your attendance and payment

are expected.

• Participants are required to pay the full fee in case they

miss the first lesson and be deducted 10% if they miss the

first two lessons.

• All participants will receive an email invoice indicating what

is owed for each course. Please pay at the UNIS Business

Office (Admin Building) in cash, deposit VND cash at the

ANZ Bank (show invoice), or make a bank transfer in VND.

The UNIS Business Office is open from 8:00 to 17:00

Monday - Friday. If payment has not been received by the

date indicated on the invoice, we reserve the right to give

the place to those on the waitlist.

• No lessons are scheduled during UNIS events, breaks and

national holidays.

• Please sign your waiver of liability form and submit it

to Co-Curricular Activities Office if this is your first time

participating in the Community Programme.

Refund Policy• Refunds are not guaranteed and may be given on a case

by case basis. Submitting an early cancellation may

increase the chances of getting a refund.

• Refunds will only be issued if the class/ workshop/ activity

has yet to start.

• Refunds will be made when courses are canceled by the

Community Programme.

• If a class is postponed, every attempt will be made to

re-schedule. When a class cannot be rescheduled, a

refund for the postponed classes will be issued.

• For sport activities, no refund will be given for cancelation

due to weather.

• Those with outstanding Community Programme invoices

will not be able to sign up for a new class until all invoices

are settled.

Join the gastronimical journey of mystical spices and savour

the taste and delights of Amazing Indian Cooking right in your

home!!! Join the UNIS Community with Ms Simran Singh who

will lead you through the journey over 6 classes and introduce

you to the basics of Home Cooked Indian Cuisine. In the class

you will be able to learn dishes such as Tea Time Snacks like

Pakoras and Kebabs (Veg) with Masala Tea; Chicken Dishes

like Butter Chicken; Chicken Tikka; Chicken Masala Curry

and Shahi (Royal) Chicken; Paneer (Cottage Cheese Dishes);

Experience the delights of Pakistanian Cuisine in Hanoi. Ms

Bushra will introduce you the most scrumptious Pakistani

cuisine you will ever taste. Ms Bushra will teach you the

most popular Pakistani dishes such as Chicken Biryani and

Chicken Handi along with a variety of desserts like Kheer and

Semolina Halwa. The recipe can be followed very easily and

will make delicious meals for the entire family. Apart from

C1 A Stroll Through the Old Streets

WEEKEND X 1

This tour includes some of the lesser known temples, alleyways

and historic sites. Your guide will give an overview of the

1000 year history of Hanoi. You will visit hidden jewels on

Linda Mazur, our popular tour guide, will talk about the

architecture, style and history of the buildings and the

historical events which changed the face of Hanoi. Linda has

C2 A Stroll Through the Citadel

Once the home to kings, the Citadel area has recently been

vacated by the Military and is now open to the public. Wander

through the historic grounds where first the French and then the

Vietnamese generals laid their military plans. Start at the South

or Central Gate to view the first archeological dig which verified

the age of the entrance. This tour is conducted by our popular

tour guide, Linda Mazur. Please wear comfortable shoes.

C3 Transitional Architecture in the Thien Quang Lake Area

WEEKEND X 1

This unique tour created by Linda Mazur will take you on an

adventure around Thien Quang Lake. This area may look quite

serene but its history is full of interesting untold stories. In the

1920s and 1930s, the Thien Quang Lake area became the home

for the rich, powerful and famous. In the 1930s, new zoning laws

compelled the owners to build villas and refrain from opening

businesses. Newly graduated architects from the beaux arts

college began experimenting with modern designs and materials.

These architectural wonders are rarely on the regular tours but

deserve a place in Hanoi’s history. Not recommended for infants

C4 Street Food Tour

WEEKEND X 1

Take a walk through Hanoi’s Old Quarter street markets

with our local chef/ guide who’s passionate about food, and

discover the exotic flavors of Vietnam with fellow food-lovers.

Take a wander down Hanoi’s atmospheric lanes of houses,

shops and street stalls, stopping to sample flame-grilled

meat snacks at a local barbeque stall. Breathe in the aromatic

scents wafting from street hawker stalls selling everything

from exotic fruit to seafood. Led by a local guide, hear stories

about the ingredients and history of Hanoi’s food culture and

northern Vietnamese specialties. Sample fruit, hawker street

food and local specialties and visit Hanoi’s largest covered

markets, Dong Xuan or Chau Long Market. With a maximum

of 11 participants, you’ll have a personalized experience on

this walking tour of Hanoi’s best street food areas.

A further five venues are included in the tour and all travel

between venues is by taxi or on foot. The tour finishes with

one of Hanoi’s best-kept secrets, a tucked away caf� with

C5 Tour to Silk and Ceramics Villages

WEEKEND X 1

Visiting Bat Trang, the pottery village, you will be able to see

pottery and ceramics made in the traditional way. Located

on the left bank of the Red River, Bat Trang is the most

famous and long-standing pottery village in Vietnam for its

artistic products. From ancient times up to the present, Bat

Trang Pottery Village has been operating and developing

continously. According to a legend, the village was first called

Bach Tho Phuong. People in the village remember that the

place of their origin was Bo Bat Village (or called Bach Bat

Village), Yen Mo District, in Ninh Binh Province.

After having lunch at KOTO restaurant, a hospitality training

school for street and disadvantaged young people, you will

head over to Van Phuc Silk village. Here you can see the

processes involved in making Vietnamese silk and purchase

beautiful silk clothing and furnishings.

C6 Tour to charming and historic Hanoi

WEEKEND X 1

This day tour fitstly will take you to the highlights of Hanoi

such as Temple of Literature, the iconic One Pillar Pagoda,

the grand and solemn Mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh, West

Lake’s Tran Quoc Temple and the fascinating Ngoc Son

Temple on Hoan Kiem Lake, the beautiful West Lake.

Lunch will be served at one of our city’s select Vietnamese

restaurants. Then, you will take an hour cyclo tour through

the bustling Old Quarter, known as the 36 streets, an

area of narrow streets home to literally thousands of small

businesses, shopkeepers and street vendors, selling

everything from bananas to books. A cyclo is a Vietnamese

version of a cycle rickshaw, originally used as the main form

of transportation in Vietnam. At the end of the day you will

stop at a local coffee shop for a cup of coffee before you

attend a water puppets show. Trip finishes after the water

puppets show.

C7 Tour to Duong Lam Ancient Village

WEEKEND X 1

This trip is a fantastic excursion out into the countryside

surrounding Hanoi - rarely visited by foreign travellers. A full

day of culture, beautiful scenery and traditional architecture

makes the perfect escape from busy bustling Hanoi.

Your journey will start at 8 am when you are picked up by

your English speaking guide. After a two hour trip into the

countryside surrounding Hanoi you will arrive at Duong Lam,

an agricultural village of the Red River Delta which has many

100 year old houses. After some time wandering around the

village and getting to know the locals take a short walk to Mia

Pagoda. This pagoda built in the 15th century boasts 287

statues of Buddha and deities. Towards the late morning

move on to Ba Vi National Park. This park consists of three

limestone peaks in the midst of the flat Red River Delta and

the peaks are a refuge from the heat of the flatlands. Driving

up towards the summit you pass through the clouds and

enjoy the sounds and smells of the forest. Just before the

summit you will enjoy a packed lunch from Hanoi before

continuing to the summit. After enjoying the view and taking

some pictures, head back to the car. If time allows you can

visit a cactus and orchid farm before heading back to Hanoi.

Expect to arrive back at your hotel at 5pm.

S1 Lacquer Painting Workshop

Are you interested in discovering Vietnamese Lacquer

Painting? Lacquer School Tay Ho offers a special lacquer

painting course of 5 classes for UNIS ComEd. In this course,

you will have the opportunity to learn the traditional Asian

lacquer art using materials such as mother of pearl, gold and

silver leaves, eggshell etc… You can paint pictures as well as

decorate vases, boxes and bowls. Lacquer painting requires

many processes over a long period of time, but you will finish

a small painting during the 5 class course. The classes are

instructed by artist Tran Anh Tuan who is Master-Professor of

Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Art.

Lotus leaf painting is a beautiful and unique activity to paint on

a special canvas covered with real preserved lotus leaves. It’s

easy to do and no previous painting skills are needed. It is a

very relaxing and therapeutic activity. Come to the workshop

to paint your creation on a very special canvas covered with

real lotus leaves. Participating in the workshop, you will not

only learn the acrylic painting techniques, compose your

color matching but also be able to bring back to your home

a genuine and lovely piece of art, a symbol of Vietnam. Your

S6 Artistic Drawing Fundamentals

Do you want to discover your inner artist? Do you want

to learn how to draw from scratch, or maybe you want to

improve your drawing skills? Drawing is an excellent way

to spend free time in a positive way; it teaches you how to

express yourself in a visual and more creative way, and it

helps you to develop fine motor skills. Industrial designer,

Mr Danny R Molina will guide you through 10 lessons of two

hours in which he’ll teach you the fundamentals of artistic

This course is aimed at complete beginners, learning English

by talking and having fun through games, role-plays and other

activities while getting to know class colleagues in a cross-cultural

environment. The classes will be based on daily life/social

situations such as: greetings, introducing yourself and other

members of your family and friends, talking about your family

and friends, telling the time, dates, money, numbers, places,

daily routines, hobbies, shopping, meeting people. Learners’

needs will be taken into account and other topics can be

added to the course. A communicative approach will be used

Elementary level of English. This new course will focus on

daily routines and real situations that are of interest for the

students: doctor’s visits, meeting with a teacher or UNIS

staff, small talk and any other topics that students may

suggest. A communicative approach will be used in this

class, focusing on speaking skills, including pronunciation

and intonation. Moreover, building up vocabulary, using

dancing workout that is great for enjoyable group exercise.

It’s also a fine way to get your body on the right path towards

Face Yoga can greatly help with relaxation, confidence and

empowerment through smiling, laughing, and enhanced facial

expressions, all leading to better inter-personal skills. Joining

Face Yoga, you should have the following achievements: A

brighter face and an increased sense of well-being, through

improved facial blood and oxygen circulation by exercising

the facial muscles that are normally not used; decrease in

facial tension, allowing the release of tension in the mind. We

tend to unconsciously hold a lot of tension in the face, which

could manifest as wrinkles and lines in unwanted areas of the

face; softened facial wrinkles by toning and stretching the

facial muscles; relaxation, confidence and empowerment

through smiling, laughing, and enhanced facial expressions,

all leading to better interpersonal skills. Your teacher will be

Ms Sarika Seki Hussey, a Face Yogi, also an activist and

urban socio-economic development specialist. She is a

Children of all ages love to paint, and should be given lots of

opportunities to do so. We have many painting projects and

ideas for kids’ inspiration. Give your kids the opportunity to

explore different techniques to create their own piece of art!

We also have T-shirts, Beads, Masks and lots of other things

ready for you to paint. This class is delivered by Ms Hang

who has been working at UNIS Hanoi for nearly 10 years.

In Fun Art Attack , we encourage the creativity of your young

children and develop their imagination. We will have different

projects such as creating their self portraits, having fun with

their cartoon drawings, making their own art books, making

collage pictures, creating their own treasure boxes...They will

have time to discover different kinds of materials including

paint, water colour, markers, papers, natural materials.

This class is instructed by Ms Mai, who has been working at

UNIS Hanoi for 6 years, and brings many years of experience

teaching art to children. Instruction will be English and

This Saturday activity enables children to develop simple toys

through creative play. Children will gain hands-on knowledge

and understanding of scientific principles by building models

powered by batteries. Types of toys might include phones,

fan cars, pop-pop boats, and glow in the dark divers.

With these easy-to-make projects, children can use their

imagination to develop science toys for fun.

successfully run this activity at UNIS Hanoi for more than 5

Do you want your child to become familiar with Maths by

learning English Maths, if you are very naturally curious about

everyday problems Math and you feel very difficult to figure

out by yourself, please come to learn with Ms. Thuy as she will

teach you how to figure things out and you will have chances

to learn that many math problems can be solved in several

different ways. Fun activities will be included which you will

find math interesting and not so difficult. The program you

will learn In Math class is an International Baccalaureate (IB)

Middle Years Program (MYP) that means the Mathematics

programme for the International Students at IB Diploma level.

IB classes tend to be academically challenging, requiring

students to take initiative, organize and complete projects,

Do you want to discover your inner artist? Do you want

to learn how to draw from scratch, or maybe you want to

im-prove your drawing skills? Drawing is an excellent way

to spend free time in a positive way; it teaches you how to

ex-press yourself in a visual and more creative way, and it

helps you to develop fine motor skills. Industrial designer,

Mr Danny R Molina will guide you through 10 lessons of two

hours in which he’ll teach you the fundamentals of artistic

drawing. Language of instruction is English.

Material required for the class: Pencils: Number 2 or HB,

2B, and 6B; Charcoal; Rubber eraser, kneaded eraser (if

pos-sible); A good-brand sharpener; A pad of white paper

sheets for extra practice (Newsprint paper pad if possible);

A Sketchbook 35x25cm; A thin wooden board of 35x25 cm

that will help as a supporting surface. (Sometimes it comes

with a clip already. If don’t you can use binder clips to hold the

paper).
