Evaluation of Rapidly Settling Samples
The 2100Qs RST reading modeuses an exclusive algorithm thatcalculates and continuouslyupdates the turbidity of the sampleto a confidence of 95% based uponthe accumulated trend of the realtime measured values.
The result is a measurement ofturbidity that is more accurate andrepeatable than can be obtainedusing traditional smoothingtechniques-such as averaging.

Nephelometry techniqueMeasurement of the amount of light, which is scattered by a sample
Scattered light at 90 angle
The more light is scattered, the higher it results in turbidity!

Definition
Turbidity is the interaction between light, suspended particles and the medium.
The turbidity may be determined by measuring the attenuation of a radiant flux
as it passes through the liquid orby measuring the intensity ofdiffused radiation.
Measurement is made at an angle of 90 degree ( NEPHELOMETRY)
Two methods based on different regulations :

Definition USEPA Method 180.1
1. Most common regulatory method used in the world
2. Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater Method 2130B is very similar
3. Following design criteria are required:
a) Primary detector for nephelometric (90) measurement30
b) Light source tungsten filament lamp with a colour temperature between 2200 and3000 K.
c) Spectral response peak for the detectorbetween 400 and 600 nm, the primarywavelengths of light
d) Measurement range 0 to 40 NTU.
e) Any sample above this range must be diluted until it is within this range.

Definition USEPA Method 180.1
Many factors affect light scattering:
Particle Size
Particle Shape
Refractive Index ( water, organic solvents)
Colour of Particles and/or Fluids
Particle Concentration.
Nephelometers attempt to minimize the effects of these factors
(size, shape, color of particles) while maximizing measurement accuracy!

Formazin is the most closely mimic for real world samples (0.01m...10m)
Formazin particle distribution is similar to natural water samples, size distributions isapproximate the 1/d3 relationship:
particle size decreases by a factor 10, number of particles increases by factor 1000
Benefits:
highly reflective standards efficiently scatter incident light Light absorption by the formazin polymer is minimal
Can be prepared reproducible from traceable raw materials
formazin polymer has a density similar to that of water
Formazin is the accepted primary turbidity standard (US EPA, ISO etc.)
Stable turbidity suspension (in high concentrations like 4000 NTU) that produces stablemeasurements over time
Drawbacks:
Diluted Formazin Suspensions are unstable and must be prepared freshly
Raw chemicals are harmful (carcinogenic) and allergenic

Proper standard dilution: Stabilizing the formazin polymer based on changes that are made to the polymerand the matrix relative to a dilution.
When a stock standard is diluted, the dilution is traditionally performed using ultrapure water.
During this dilution, both the turbidity-causing polymer and any other components in the matrix are
diluted! Theoretically, only the turbidity-causing formazin polymer should be diluted.
The concentrations of all other components in the matrix should remain unchanged.
Thus, when a concentrated formazin stock solution is traditionally diluted to make a low-turbidity standardusing ultrapure dilution water, all components in the matrix are also diluted. The equilibrium then shiftsand the products are less stable.
Thus, the matrix of a formazin standard is significantly different in a low-turbidity standard versus thehighly concentrated 4000 NTU stock standard.

Hachs Calibration Philosophy
Linear relationship exists between turbidity and nephelometric response up to 40 NTU.
The zero point of the calibration curve is taken as the dark current in the instrumentbefore the lamp is turned on.
This enables accurate measurement even for very low level turbidity samples.
Preparation of low level standards for calibration results in high error at the low
NTU values.
The calibration curve is linear from 0-40 NTU therefore best calibration accuracy ismaintained at lower concentrations.
