July 2017Let Freedom SingThis Fourth of July, celebrate both our

nation’s history and the history of some favoritepatriotic songs:

“America” (“My Country ’Tis of Thee”). Thissong’s lyrics, set to the melody of “God Save theKing,” were written by the Rev. Samuel FrancisSmith, who debuted it at an Independence Daycelebration in 1831. It was used as the country’santhem for decades until “The Star-SpangledBanner” was officially given that honor in 1931.

“America the Beautiful.” According toKatharine Lee Bates, an English professor whowrote the words of this stirring tune in 1913,the lyrics were inspired by a prairie wagon rideshe took up Pikes Peak in Colorado, where shegazed upon the breathtaking beauty of thecountryside below. The music was composed in1882 by Samuel Augustus Ward, a churchorganist and choirmaster.

“You’re a Grand Old Flag.” Written by GeorgeM. Cohan for his 1906 stage show “GeorgeWashington Jr.,” this lively march was the firstsong from a musical to sell more than 1 millioncopies of sheet music.

“Yankee Doodle.” Although its exact originsare unknown, this upbeat ditty dates back topre-Revolutionary War times, when Britishofficers sang it to mock American militiamen.But in true American style, this parody has beenembraced as a patriotic classic and alsoinfluenced the works of George M. Cohan andJohn Philip Sousa.

Mouthwatering MusicNothing says “summer” like the tinkling tunes of the

neighborhood ice cream truck. Ice cream vendors havebeen peddling cold concoctions on city streets since theearly 1800s, announcing their presence with bells,harmonicas, barrel organs or their own shouting voices.

In America’s Historical Newspapers database, theearliest mention of an ice cream wagon is an 1878article about a yellow fever outbreak in New Orleans.The chief of police ordered ice cream vendors to stopringing their bells to avoid disturbing the ill.

Ice cream sellers’ music has evolved from the jangleof bells to the jingle of public domain songs such as“Turkey in the Straw,” “The Entertainer” and “Pop Goesthe Weasel.” Nowadays most ice cream trucks areequipped with digital music boxes that crank outthe classics.

Regardless of their song selection, purveyors of frostytreats have been making people scream—and run—forice cream for nearly 200 years.
