What an audience Jesus has in today's Gospel! "A great crowd of his disciples and a large number of people from all over Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon." Disciples, pagans,
and devout Jews gathered together to hear Jesus speak in the Sermon on the Mount. All of these people had something in common. God was someone to be bargained with, and if God liked you, you were rewarded with good fortune. This Sunday, Jesus tells us a different story. "Woe to you who are rich ? who are filled now? who laugh ? when all speak well of you. Blessed are you who are poor ? you who are now hungry?
when people hate you and when they exclude you and insult you." Jesus completely flips the script on what it means to be blessed by God. What he proclaims as "woe" are states of life we often strive for, and "blessed" are the states we work hard to avoid! Jesus is concerned with the kingdom of God and the world to come, not the typical structures of power and privilege. The word "now" appears often in these statements. Why? If you are well "now," that's beside the point. To be rich in this life has no direct bearing on your immortal soul. If you're struggling "now," that's not an indication that God has forgotten you or that - in light of eternity - you're worse off than someone else. In fact, it could be an indicator that you're enduring something that will bring you to a place of greater, eternal joy in the future. This Sunday, consider your priorities. Who do we reject as not blessed, and thereby inflict woe upon ourselves? When we encounter difficult situations in our own lives, do we see them as opportunities to remember God and lean on His mercy and grace?

What: Consists of THREE evenings of
film & reflection
When: Mondays (March 11, March 18, March 25)
Time: 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Where: in the St. Edward parish hall
March 11 - PINOCCHIO (yes, the Disney film, 1940)
A loving woodcarver creates Pinocchio in his own
image. Pinocchio is assigned a conscience (Jiminy
Cricket) that he chooses to ignore. Just a children’s
story? Not at all! Watch this from an adult faith
perspective and you will see elements you’ve
never noticed before.
March 18 -THE WAY (2010)
An American father (Martin Sheen) travels to France
to retrieve the body of his estranged son, who died
while attempting the pilgrimage to Spain’s Camino
de Santiago de Compostela. He resolves to take the
journey himself, in an effort to understand both
himself and his son.
March 25 - MISSING (1982)
Based on a true story, a father (Jack Lemmon)
arrives in Chile to look for his son, a political
journalist who disappeared during a military coup.
The dad’s trust in government changes when he
finds the truth about what happened with his
beloved son.
Hope that many of you
will join us for one or
more of these evenings!
Matthew’s Hearts of Hope is in need of sewers to help sew our “Hug a Heart” Pillows closed. We have multiple projects at local schools starting this week and will
have 500+ pillows to sew. The heart pillows are delivered to hospitals where children, like Matthew who have open heart surgery receive them. They offer comfort and support during a difficult and scary time! Please contact Marie Hatcher at (860) 354 3551 or email [email protected] if you can help.
Thanks a million! Marie
