20TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 18, 2019 PG.2
Ministry Schedule for August 24, 2019-August 25,2019
20TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 18, 2019 PG. 3
I just wanted to share with you some thought I had from one of the places I was privileged to
visit during my vacation. The place is called Skellig Michael, an island off the south-west coast of
Ireland on which monks in the sixth century built a monastery. It has become quite famous in recent
years as it was used as a filming location for the recent Star Wars movies. When I call it an island its
being generous, for really it is like a mountain that juts up from the sea… its much more vertical than
horizontal.
The first monks that came there, came with a lot of faith but with nothing else. They literally
had to carve a home out of the mountainside and create living space in one of least habitable spaces.
They were able to do so, and the monastery functioned independently till the 11th century and later
as a pilgrimage site till the time of the Protestant Reformation, when England’s anti Catholic reforms
hit Ireland and her people with a particular ferocity, closing monasteries and religious houses and
driving the practice of the faith into secrecy.
Two points:
One, the faith and courage of the monks who felt called by God to go to the
farthest corner of the world to seek God. Nothing was impossible for them… where all of us would
see an impossible task, the monks knew with God’s help, they could do it. This is the type of cour-
age we need in our own day, the courage which comes from a boundless love and
confidence in God. I climbed the steps that led to monastery, all 600 of them, and doing it once was
enough for me, but for them, they saw this monastery as their way to heaven, and they generously
paid the price for this gift. They trusted God would provide for them in a place that seemed least hos-
pitable to human life. They worshipped God from there, they ate and drank from the few things they
could catch and grow, and they died there hoping in heaven their true home. Truly the world of God
was their true bread.
The other point, is that now it is a ruin. The monastery lasted for a time and the monks
served God faithfully for many centuries, but it was destroyed by the evils of the
reformation. However the faith of the monks lived on in the perseverance of the Irish people in the
face of persecution from the 16th through the 19th century, when the penal laws were lifted and
Catholics could practice their faith once again. After that came the era missionary expansion where
thousands of priests went to the farthest corner of the world spreading the Catholic faith in America
and Global South. Some forms of serving God come and go, but the basic mission of the Church
continues to the end of the age. This is consoling in a time when many former things that character-
ized the Catholic Church in the United States seem to be on the decline. Maybe the dying of some
things to make room for the new things God wants to raise up? Maybe this is something we can hope
in as we pray for the courage and love to passionately follow God like the monks of Skellig Michael
did.
These are thoughts that came to my mind during my trip. If you are able to go to Skellig
Michael, I would heartily recommend it those who love pilgrimage, love history, who don’t have
knee or hip problems and do not fear heights.
