What is Virtualization• Virtualization enables us combine servers from

multiple generations into the same virtualized server pool.

• Virtualization allows a group of inefficient servers to be replaced with a fewer number of machines.

• Virtualization is a software that allows a piece of hardware to run multiple operating system images at the same time.

The need for Virtualization

Earlier practices had the following drawbacks:-

• Addition of too many servers (Tower and Rack Servers) to run additional applications

• Sub-optimal utilization of servers

• Problems of managing an army of servers

• Space consolidation in Data Center

Types of VirtualizationServer Virtualization

• Converting several physical servers into a pool of Virtual servers

Storage Virtualization• The process of completely abstracting logical storage from

physical storage

Application Virtualization• The hosting of individual application

Desktop Virtualization• User interface is as per profile setup centrally- can access from

any desktop. Means Data, Application, OS - all reside in a virtual environment

Benefits of Virtualization

• Lower investment (CAPEX) on hardware

• Minimum physical space requirement

• Better utilization of hardware resources

• Less power consumption

• Less maintenance overhead of IT

• Provision for resources on demand

• Patch management and upgrade become easier

• Disaster recover planning (DRP) become easier

• In case of interruption of services, one can backup and even

migrate entire virtual environment

IMPLEMENTATION ISSUES

• To plan and procure licenses

• Arrange for adequate and appropriate hardware, capacity

planning

• To evaluate and select partner to implement, configure

and activate

• Take care of interface with storage, backup devices etc

• Install tools for management

MANAGEMENT

• Use tools for health check

• Performance management

• Allocation and reallocation of resources

• Retain a partner for help on an on-going basis

Resources for Virtualization

HARDWARE

Blade Servers High end servers-Logical

partitioning Micro partitioning (Further

sub-division of the processor)

SOFTWARE

Virtualization Software. e.g. IBM, HP, VMware, Citrix, Red Hat (Xen, kvm), Microsoft (Hyper-V).

Hypervisor layer (software emulating hardware)

S.A.N. Network switches

Sharing experience on Server Consolidation

Servers Consolidation Servers are placed in data

center in Head Office to centrally host applications

Data center has close to 80 servers

After using ‘Virtualization’, Number of servers reduced to 36 boxes (Blades)
