ASSET PROTECTION - THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE
Both business owners and families are concerned about protecting their assets. Families quickly protect their tangible assets such as homes,
cars, and jewelry against losses with insurance coverage. Likewise, businesses protect their facilities, inventories, and equipment, and also have coverage against malpractice and general liability claims. Most families and business owners would be very uncomfortable without such insurance coverage and make such monetary expenditures a priority within their budgets. If you need or feel uncomfortable with your coverage, the Chamber has members in the financial services and insurance business with the resources to assist and address your needs.
Our speaker at our July Chamber luncheon, John Truitt, gave a presentation on sleep disorders and the financial cost and emotional impact to individuals and businesses. Businesses suffer financial loss from employee accidents, sickness, and absenteeism caused by lack of sleep. As owners, managers, and individuals suffering from lack of sleep, we can also suffer from lack of focus, increased health issues, and emotional stress. This presentation reinforced the question - how do I protect my intangible assets? What do you do to protect your most
valuable intangible asset – yourself? Just as one’s tangible assets have to be properly maintained to achieve maximum efficiency and lasting value, so do humans.
The livelihood of a family or business depends on the ability to provide an income. Income is the foundation from which all other assets are derived. In order to protect family or business income, one must protect themselves and their paycheck. As a business owner, manager, or professional, you are the driving force of income production. Therefore, you must accept the responsibility to develop and commit to a strategy of maintenance and improvement of your intangible wellbeing, physical, and emotional health. Such a plan could include:
Adequate quality and quantity of sleep•Proper nutrition•Regular physical exercise•Stress management•Support network (family, friends, peers)•Rest and relaxation (designated time off, •vacations)Hobbies and unrelated work interests •(community, charity, groups)
Evaluate your strategy today to see if you truly have a plan to ensure your well–being -- Invest in yourself, your most valuable asset.

The speaker for the July luncheon was John Truitt, a leading figure in the field of Sleep Medicine. His program was Snooze or Lose: How to Sleep Better and Have More Energy. Mr. Truitt shared with the group that only one in four Americans get eight hours of sleep per night, and it’s taking a toll on our health. A lack of sleep doesn’t just make us moody and less productive; it is associated with heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and can even shorten our lives. He shared some tips for better sleeping, but also warned that people with more severe cases of insomnia should seek medical advice.
Sponsors for the July Luncheon were Anita Jean of Financial Fitness, as well as Deborah
Goin of Keep Aubrey Beautiful, who shared with the crowd some of the exciting things that will be going on at the 27th Annual Peanut Festival.

Hot weather, hot music! Downtown Aubrey was jumping on Saturday, July 21, as the Tejas Brothers entertained a large and enthusiastic crowd with their brand of “Tex-Mex” music, with just enough country and rock & roll thrown in for good measure. 2012 was a successful year for Keep Aubrey Beautiful’s Music in the Park series, sponsored by Northwest Propane Gas Company, along with 380Guide/380News, and Aubrey Pharmacy. The third Saturday of May, June, and July brought crowds of music lovers to Downtown Aubrey to hear awesome entertainment from popular Texas musicians.

GreenFest is a fun festival for all ages! This regional event will celebrate the Ray Roberts Greenbelt through experiential outdoor activities, live music and good food. Participants can test their skills at archery, climbing, kayaking, biking, and geo-caching, see demonstrations by historians and craftsmen of the Cross Timbers eco-region, or take a carriage ride down the Greenbelt Trail. Kids will enjoy a reptile exhibit, pony rides, Backyard Bass competition, an inflatable obstacle course and slide, and more.
Organized by the Greenbelt Alliance of Denton County, together with Texas Parks and Wildlife, the City of Denton, and the US Army Corps of Engineers, this fundraising event will be held from 2 to 8 pm on September 29th at the Greenbelt entrance off Highway 455 by the dam. Part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Public Lands Day, GreenFest’s theme will emphasize outdoor fun, respect for nature, and water and boating safety.
Proceeds will assist with reopening the equestrian trail between Highways 428 and 455,
restoration of the G re e n b e l t rest rooms, installation of a wetland viewing deck and trail, if approved by the USACE, and support of the Greenbelt Alliance – a non-profit organization dedicated to stewardship of the Lewisville/Ray Roberts Greenbelt.
Please join us September 29 to celebrate the Greenbelt and have fun. Keeping this unique natural resource vibrant and beautiful benefits our region and our next generation.
