EFFECTIVE CLUBROOT MANAGEMENT WITH DEKALB CANOLA HYBRIDS
CLUBROOT MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES
Managing clubroot isn’t easy. You need an integrated clubroot management plan that employs a variety of best management practices so you can keep ahead of this disease. Take a look at some of the most effective strategies you can do in combination with DEKALB® clubroot resistant canola hybrids to help prevent and manage clubroot on your farm:• Crop rotation: 1 in 3-year canola crop rotation (minimum 2-year break) • Scouting: Proactive and comprehensive scouting can help you find and identify

LEGENDStraight cut hybrids are selected for their excellent harvestability and every consideration has gone into speeding up harvest while reducing losses and risk. DEKALB® hybrids with our SC or SC+ icons are bred specifically for enhanced pod integrity. These icons will provide farmers with a deeper understanding of pod integrity to allow them the flexibility to chose the best harvest management style for their farm. There are a lot of factors getting to the day of direct combining. Increased pod integrity in our genetics is a strong driver for reducing losses. In addition to pod integrity, our DEKALB SC hybrids feature early maturity and quick dry down allowing for an earlier, faster and smoother harvest. Natural dry-down means a desiccant isn’t always necessary, eliminating the need for another spray pass in the fall.

The harvestability of some of the new varieties, like for straight cutting, has been phenomenal. Like the 82 SC. We really like it. It’s a short small plant. It dries down fast, still has good yield potential, but it makes for a very easy harvest for us.

EXPERIENCE THE DEKALB TARGETED PLANT POPULATION ADVANTAGE Our research has shown (consistent with the Canola Council of Canada1) that a targeted plant population of 5 to 8 plants/ft2 1 is the ideal way to maintain an optimal yield. Any less, and you leave your field more vulnerable to weeds. Any more and you risk potential thinner, less productive plants. To put it another way, 5 to 8 plants/ft2 1 is the perfect way to set your canola crop up for success. Our recommended seeding rate is 10 seeds per square foot. With average canola survivability in Western Canada ranging from 50-80%, this seeding rate supports a targeted plant population of 5-8 plants per square foot.
There are risks when managing plant stands with too low and too high plant densities.
Risks of low plant populations: • Non-uniform plant stand - this may be affected by the seeding practices or the field variability. A low
emergence rate could be the cause of low plant density. In fields that historically have patchy stands, a low seeding rate can compound the issue
• Weed control - low plant densities allow more room for weeds to grow. Vigilant weed management will be important if plant densities are lower2
• Uneven maturity - low plant stands may have increased branching. This can cause delayed maturity since branches flower and mature later than the main stem. In a short growing season, maturity may be an important factor to consider2
• Extended flowering time due to increased branching in low plant populations can make it difficult to stage and time a proper sclerotinia fungicide application
Risks of high plant populations:• Lodging - high plant densities (more than 14 plants per square foot) can result in increased lodging as
stems are thin and pods may be concentrated at the top of the plant3
• Disease - high plant densities can be more at risk for yield loss due to sclerotinia. A thick canopy and increased lodging can create ideal conditions for this disease4
• Internal crop competition - too many plants condensed in a row can lead to crop competition where plants compete for available resources to the point where some plants are thinned out
OPTIMAL SEEDING RATES. IT’S NOT ABOUT BAG WEIGHT. IT’S ABOUT PRECISION.We have a long history of packaging by seed count with corn and soybeans and now we’re applying the same methods of precision to canola seed. Using our unique ability to accurately measure TSW (thousand seed weight), we can ensure that every bag of DEKALB® canola contains no less than 4.25M seeds – the optimal target plant population for every 10 acres. Just choose the hybrid that’s right for you and you’re on your way to optimizing the performance of your DEKALB canola.

PlanningWith every bag equal to 10 acres you can know in advance the exact amount of seed you need for your canola acres. DEKALB canola will be available in:
• 4.25M seeds/bag. Seeds 10 ac./bag• 85M seeds/tote. Seeds 200 ac./tote• 170M seeds/SeedPak. Seeds 400 ac./SeedPak
Packaging Regardless of TSW every bag of DEKALB canola will have no less than 4.25 million seeds per bag and is recommended to seed at 10 acres per bag. Simply divide the total pounds of the bag by 10 to get your seeding rate. Example: Bag weight is 45 lbs. 45 lbs/10 acres = 4.5 lbs/acre seeding rate.

DEKALB SILAGE READY HYBRIDSHIGH NUTRITIONAL VALUE AND QUALITY ON EVERY ACRE YOU GROW
Corn acreage has been expanding rapidly across Western Canada over the last decade as producers are recognizing the yield potential and quality of feed corn silage produces. The ability to produce higher tonnage off less acres in less time makes corn silage an attractive alternative to other feed sources. This has opened up opportunities for producers to achieve better weight gains with corn, open up acres for other crops or expand their herds, all while saving time in the summer putting up other winter feed sources.
For years, Bayer has tested our germplasm extensively for its fit as a silage product with high quality yield potential for Canadian farmers. Today, the DEKALB® brand provides seed with the potential to produce high quality silage and high beef yield potential per acre. These products benefit from genetics from around the world but are tested locally. You can expect hybrids with excellent agronomic characteristics, high yield potential, very good fibre digestibility, very high energy levels and the potential for very good milk or beef per tonne and milk or beef per acre.
Bayer continues to invest heavily in breeding DEKALB corn hybrids including breeding stations and Market Development testing locations across Western Canada. You can count on experienced DEKALB agronomists for advice on the right hybrids for your operation, so you get the most out of your fields.
NUTRITIONAL ANALYSIS
DEKALB offers a range of dual-purpose corn hybrids with exceptional agronomic characteristics, the result of breeding efforts based on many plots. We are continually working to develop products with better starch and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) digestibility combined with higher yield potential. Hundreds of silage samples are sent each year for laboratory analysis using the MILK2006 model developed by the University of Wisconsin. The model provides a silage quality index (kilograms of milk per tonne of silage), as well as a silage quality index based on yield (kilograms of milk per acre).
YIELD + QUALITY = FEED VALUE
Approximately 60% of yield is from the ear:• 40 to 45% is from the grain • 15 to 20% is from the rest (shank and husk)
The primary component of the ear is starch:• Responsible for approximately 45% of all dispensable energy in silage• Starch is 70 to 95% digestible

• Hybrids require a minimum of 2 years of testing to ensure consistency of performance
DUAL PURPOSE CORN HYBRIDS
DEKALB® offers a range of dual-purpose corn hybrids that can either be harvested for grain or silage, giving the grower great flexibility of use at the end of the season. It is not necessarily the best grain corn hybrids that make the best silage hybrids. But a good silage hybrid is often a product with a very good grain yield. In fact, grain accounts for nearly 60% of dry matter and it is from grain that most of the energy (45%) comes from. Hybrid size is also not necessarily related to final yield: a shorter hybrid with a larger ear can yield more silage than a larger, very leafy hybrid with a smaller ear.
All DEKALB corn hybrids are tested for silage qualities such as nutrition, digestibility, tonnage and regional agronomic fit through extensive field testing across Canada after commercialization. The DEKALB Silage Ready™ brand provides great performing hybrids with the potential to produce high quality silage and high milk yield potential per acre or beef yield per acre.

MORE RESEARCH LEADING TO BETTER DECISIONS
The agronomic traits of DEKALB hybrids are just as important for silage as they are for grain. DEKALB's priority is to bring to market silage hybrids with superior qualities such as early season vigour, stem and root strength, staygreen and stress tolerance. More than 300 field scale trials of grain corn and silage have been established in the last five years in Western Canada alone to evaluate the performance of our hybrids and their agronomic strengths. These trials are established on farms locally to gain insight and meet the needs of growers. DEKALB agronomists use the trials to rigorously evaluate each hybrid throughout the season.

THE MILK2006 MODEL
• FROM TESTING TO MODELING - MILK2006
– The MILK2006 model, developed at the University of Wisconsin, compares the silage yield and quality of corn products. The model evaluates silage corn products for digestibility, fibre, starch, crude protein and animal intake potential. It then converts these factors into milk per tonne (MPT), which is a measure of estimated intake of energy from corn silage. Milk per acre (MPA) is then calculated using the milk per tonne value and dry matter yield per acre. Therefore, MILK2006 provides an index of silage quality (milk per tonne) and silage quality by yield (milk per acre). This model is considered a good predictor of animal performance. Testing for DEKALB Silage Ready products is done across a large variety of management areas across Canada.

– After being evaluated using the MILK 2006 model, each hybrid is rated for MPT and MPA as a percent of the plot index (grouped by maturity). Hybrid families are rated together and an overall rating is determined for each hybrid.

Introducing DKB0003-24, the earliest variety in the DEKALB lineup with 000.3 RM. This Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® variety excels in moderate-to-high fertility environments, and is an excellent fit for no-till. The disease package for DKB0003-24 includes resistance to soybean cyst nematode and phytophthora root rot resistance gene Rps1c & 1k.
The new DKB0008-87 variety has a 000.8 RM and suits all soil types tested. It has excellent no-till adaptability, along with very good emergence and seedling vigour. The disease package for this variety includes excellent tolerance to white mould, phytophthora root rot resistance gene Rps1c & 1k as well as having resistance to soybean cyst nematode.
DKB008-48 is a new variety with 00.8 RM. This medium-to-tall variety has excellent standability and consistent performance across all soil types and yield environments tested. It also offers a strong disease package and soybean cyst nematode resistance.
SEEDING RECOMMENDATIONSSelecting more tolerant varieties can be effective in managing diseases such as white mould and maintaining yield potential. While no soybean varieties are completely resistant, DEKALB® offers varieties with tolerance to white mould and high standability ratings. In fields with a history of white mould, avoid planting highly susceptible varieties, reduce populations and consider using Delaro® fungicide.

Protect your DEKALB® soybeans from the yield-robbing disease, white mould, with Delaro® fungicide. Field health imagery in the FieldView™ platform can help to determine which areas may be susceptible to disease based upon plant biomass.
