Saturday, 17 SeptAfter an early arrival in Istanbul, we are whisked off to our hotel for an early check in, breakfast and freshening up. Then off to discover this exotic city with Gerrie showing you around.

Stroll through the Sultanahamet – the Old Town of Istanbul, filled with Spires and Minarets promising wonderful photo opportunities, especially from the rooftop restaurants.

Imagine glimpsing the Blue Mosque whilst enjoying humus, quail eggs or halva.

No time to lose – too much Gerrie wants to show you: The Grand Bazaar, the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Spice Souk with a fascinating walk-through, sampling several delights.

Rest your feet at the Galata Bridge, sipping on mint tea while watching ferries come and go across the busy Bosphorus.

We end the day off with a memorable Welcome dinner, experiencing the local atmosphere and delicious local cuisine. (BD)

Sunday, 18 SeptToday you can explore by yourself, with a choice on how you would like to do it: Either a Hop-on-Hop-off or a travel ticket for trams, buses and ferries.

Travel like a local, heading to the new part of Istanbul, on a tram to Taksim Square and explore the bargains along the 1.5 km Pedestrian shopping zone of Istiklal Street.

Topkapi Palace is a fascinating place to spend a few hours and end your day with a sundowner cruising on the Bosphorus.

A Hammam (Turkish bath) is a great treat to indulge in. Enjoy a traditional dinner tonight, complete with Belly Dancers and Whirling Dervishes – a truly unforgettable experience!

Monday, 19 Sept This morning we travel to the airport for our next exciting adventure – Germany, here we come!

On arrival in Munich we board our bus and travel through the lovely Bavarian countryside to the picturesque village of Oberammergau, hosting the imposing Passion Play. (For the uninformed amongst us: The Passion Play is an enactment of the story of Christ every 10th year.)

This tiny town impressively hosts an audience of almost 5000 people at a time, by including the neighbouring villages to eventually accommodate up to half a million people between May and October. It is a remarkably smooth operation, moving huge numbers of visitors every afternoon, from their respective accommodations, for the start of the performance. Halfway though, they transport everyone back to their accommodations for dinner and collect them again for the last half of the play. And of course, they also return you back to your accommodation after the play. Truly applaudable.

The play is in German and everyone receives a transcript in their own language. However, you will soon abandon the translation, being so absorbed by the sheer size and sincerity of the production. If you know the story well, you will find it easy to follow. Almost every person in the village has a part to play in the production. It is a fascinating process. It is known to be one of the largest productions staged and is a most moving and unique event to witness. Dinner and overnight at your accommodation in Oberammergau or a neighbouring village. (BD)

Tuesday, 20 Sept The big day, for our performance of the play, has arrived. You are free in the morning (until lunch) to explore Oberammergau complete with ornate houses adorned with either carvings (for which the town is famous) or the painted decorations on the buildings.

At lunch you will be transferred to the village and get the opportunity to try a real Bavarian treat – a Fleischkasse Roll. Afterwards we head for the theatre and take our Category B seats for the start of the play.

At around 19h00 you will be dropped off at your accommodation for dinner and collected again for the last half of the play.

Once again, they will take you back to your accommodation after the play. (BLD)

Wednesday, 21 Sept We check out in the morning and bit the beautiful Oberammergau farewell, leaving for Munich, the picturesque Capital of Bavaria and home to the biggest Festival in the World, Oktoberfest - without a doubt the most exciting and vibrant time to visit. The atmosphere is palpable.

We travel by bus through the lovely Bavarian countryside, past Linderhof Palace to the most beautiful and iconic Neuschwanstein Castle. Take beautiful photos from the bridge and enjoy a short visit to the grounds of this enigmatic property, if you feel like it.

We continue to Munich and check in at our hotel for a 2-night stay. Join Gerrie on foot through The Aldstadt (Old Town) and pay a visit to the heart of traditional Bavarian food, the Victualienmarkt. Sample little morsels of German delicatessens – to get to know the specialities of this interesting and robust nation.

Then… time to join the festivities of Oktoberfest! The festival is situated at Theresienwiese, which is on the underground line, making it easily accessible for everyone. Wiesn, the other name for Oktoberfest, offers you much more than just beer. It’s a true people’s festival offering lots of activities, including a massive fairground, called Luna Park. It covers acres and offers wonderful rides, including a “must ride” Ferris Wheel for a magnificent view of the fairgrounds and Munich, especially at sunset.And of course, the festivity explodes in 16 or more party-tents, each differently themed, so choose carefully… Prepare yourself for the time of your life! PS. Your first beer is on us – and don’t forget to eat a Pretzel, they go together!

The Fair is open between 10h00 and 22h00 (weekdays). Return to the hotel for overnight. (B, Snack at Markt, Pretzel and Beer)

Thursday, 22 SeptSightseeing of Munich. Today you’ll have time to explore on your own. A great way to this is on a Hop-on-Hop-off tour. It will take you to all the main attractions. Starting with Marienplatz and the Glockenspiel figurines appearing on the hour to perform on the Rathaus.

The beautiful English Garden, which will be changing into autumn colours, is a popular attraction.

The car enthusiasts amongst us might want to visit the famous BMW Museum. If you’re an avid museum visitor, then don’t miss the unique Deutsches

Museum, spanning centuries of history and articles on display from original inventions to modern amazements. It never ceases to impress its visitors.

Munich is the kind of city you can wander around and bump into history around every corner. Sit down at a street café, enjoy a leisurely coffee (or beer) and watch shoppers along Maximilianstrasse.

A visit to Munich is not complete without visiting to the famous Hoffbrauhaus, where we will treat you to a beer of course. If you find the size of the mighty one litre beer daunting, you might want to opt for a Radler – half beer and half lemonade.The Oktoberfest is still in full swing with lots of entertainment at the fairgrounds. The fun continues well into the night. New friends to be made from all corners of the world and of course, Germany.

Friday, 23 Sept Our last day in Munich and time to finish shopping, do some more exploring or meet up with new friends at the Oktoberfest, before travelling to the airport for our flight to Istanbul this afternoon. And from Istanbul, back home.

Saturday, 24 Sept We arrive in Johannesburg. Home after an extraordinary experience with Gerrie Pretorius, one of the best tour companions ever.
