Marriage Within Mass may be celebrated.

Whenever Marriage Within Mass is celebrated, the Ritual Mass “The Celebration of Marriage” is used with sacred vestments of the color white or of a festive color. (Order of Celebrating Matrimony, second edition, [hereafter OCM] 34)

Our diocesan custom is that Marriages Within or Without Mass are not celebrated on Sundays. A Marriage within the Mass of the Day may be celebrated. Ritual Masses are connected to the celebration of certain Sacraments or Sacramentals. They are prohibited on Sundays of Advent, Lent, and Easter, on Solemnities, on the days within the Octave of Easter, on the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls’ Day), on Ash Wednesday, and during Holy Week, and furthermore due regard is to be had for the norms set out in the ritual books or in the Masses themselves. (GIRM, 372)

On those days listed in nos. 1-4 of the Table of Liturgical Days, the Mass of the Day is used with its own readings, with inclusion of the Nuptial Blessing and, if appropriate, theproperformulaforthefinalblessing. If, however, during Christmas and Ordinary Time, the parish community participates in a Sunday Mass during which Marriage is celebrated, the Mass of the Sunday is used.

Nevertheless, since a Liturgy of the Word adapted for the celebration of Marriage has a great impact in the handing on of catechesis about the Sacrament itself and about the duties of the spouses, when the Mass “For the Celebration of Marriage” is not said, one of the readings may be taken from the texts provided for the celebration of Marriage. (OCM, 34)

MASS FOR VARIOUS NEEDS AND OCCASIONS: MASS IN TIME OF PANDEMIC

On March 20, 2020, the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments promulgated new Mass texts entitled “Mass for Various Needs and Occasions: Mass in Time of Pandemic” (Prot. N. 156/20). In a rather unusual process, given the urgency of the worldwide pandemic, they released the texts in Latin, English, Spanish, German and other languages simultaneously.

A presider may use this Mass text “for the duration of the pandemic.” It may be used any day except Solemnities; the Sundays or Advent, Lent, and Easter; days within the Octave of Easter; The Commemoration of the Faithful Departed (All Souls); Ash Wednesday and the days of Holy Week.

Jeanne Marie Miles, Director OfficeforWorship

A worldwide tragedy like the Covid-19 pandemic momentarily revived the sense that we are a global community, all in the same boat, where one person’s problems are the problems of all. Once more we realized that no one is saved alone; we can only be saved together. As I said in those days, “the storm has exposed our vulnerability and uncovered those false and superfluous certainties around which we constructed our daily schedules, our projects, our habits and priorities… Amid this storm, the façade of those stereotypes with which we camouflaged our egos, always worrying about appearances, has fallen away, revealing once more the ineluctable and blessed awareness that we are part of one another, that we are brothers and sisters of one another." (Pope Francis, Fratelli Tutti, no. 32)

CANDLEMAS DAY The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is one of only two liturgical celebrations which call for a procession of the faithful into church carrying lighted candles - the other being the Easter Vigil. The faithful gather outside the church (or for pastoral reasons, inside the church), and after their candles are lit, the priest blesses them:

"O God, source and origin of all light, ...sanctify with your blessing these candles, which we are eager to carry in praise of your name, so that, treading the path of virtue, we may reach that light which never fails." The Procession follows. (RM, Proper of Saints, February 2)

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY How should a person, parish or diocese properly prepare for and celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday? The primary celebration consists of the celebration of the liturgy of the Second Sunday of Easter. The homily should focus onthescripturalreadingsoftheday, whicharecenteredontheforgivenessofsinsandGod’sinfinitemercy.Other celebrations are as varied as the people who plan them. Most consist of a Holy Hour with Exposition and Benediction, sacramental confession, and private prayer which includes the Divine Mercy Chaplet.

"The Easter Vigil, in the holy night when the Lord rose again, is considered the "mother of all holy Vigils," in which the Church, keeping watch, awaits the Resurrection of Christ and celebrates it in the Sacraments. This ceremony for the blessing and commissioning of catechists is intended to take place at the Eucharistic liturgy on Catechetical Sunday. If this is not

possible, the blessing and commissioning may be celebrated at Mass at another time, or it may be used outside of Mass, perhaps with the praying of the Liturgy of the Hours or at a simple commissioning service. “Order for the Blessing of Those Appointed as Catechists” can be found in the Book of Blessings [BB], no. 491.
