Ken is an award-winning American watercolorist and full-time painter & workshop instructor. He has spent 30 years as an illustrator working with advertising agencies & design firms. In his early thirties, he was a Senior Artist for Walt Disney World. Ken is a sought-after workshop instructor with almost 100 workshops to date. He has many instructional videos on YouTube and has produced, edited and sold over 200 instructional DVD’s. Ken is a Signature member of the Watercolor Society of NC and is affiliated with the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society. Ken has exhibited in over 24 shows nationally. He won First Place and Best in Show at the Randolph Arts Council show in North Carolina, and Ken has juried art shows as well.

This class is ESPECIALLY for beginners. NO prior ex-perience is necessary! You may have heard how “hard” watercolors are, but that is NOT true!! If you want to learn the very basics of painting in watercolor just for fun or to gain knowledge to prepare you for the next level of workshops, this is the class for you! There will be dis-cussion, demonstrations, handouts/notes, step by step instruction, and individual painting/practice time with assistance from Edwina. Topics include tools & materi-als and how to use them, different styles &techniques, choosing & transferring images, composition, color mix-ing, backgrounds & subjects, and more. Reference pho-tos and some samples will be provided.
Edwina is a mostly self-taught watercolor artist, spe-cializing in photo-realistic pet portraits. She is also the Workshop Coordinator for Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff. She has over 100 original paintings in private collections across the US, and in other countries as well. Edwina graduated magna cum laude with a BS in Art Education and K-12 Teaching certification from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. In 2000, she was chosen to be the Official Artist for the North Carolina Public Library System’s an-nual statewide Summer Reading Program for Children & Teens. In addition to animal and landscape paintings, she is now practicing her hand at realistic “People and Character” portraits. Edwina has also hand painted signs, Christmas ornaments, rocks, and the entire fleet of 30 carousel horses (on 3 different occasions), as well as a life-size detailed mural of a steam locomotive and a black light mural at Tweetsie Railroad amusement park. In 2017, she illustrated the children’s book, Finding Home, written by NC author, Bridgett Bell Langson. Edwina also teaches workshops on painting realistic watercolor Pet Pawtraits at Cheap Joe’s.

Discover the exciting results of negative painting with watercolor! Negative painting is the technique of painting around a subject (the negative space) to define it in the composition. Build your confidence in handling glazes, wet into wet, under-paintings and painting into wet pas-sages. Robert Burridge, a noted award-winning Industrial Designer who, after twenty-five years in the corporate world, focused his life to painting every day. Burridge at-tributes his success to his education from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, his stint as an adjunct pro-fessor at Cooper Union in New York City, and in 1966, his Fluxus art performances with Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Jim McWilliams and Charlotte Moorman. His work hangs in permanent collections of international embassies, corporate galleries and art colleges. His solo museum exhibitions received positive attention, so he was invited to exhibit his paintings at the Smithsonian Folklife Circus Arts Festival in Washington, DC.

Do your paintings ever look flat and lack depth? This class focuses on how to make a painting look three di-mensional and realistic. We will be painting red cherries on a lace tablecloth. You will learn how to leave paper-white realistic highlights on the cherry and how to make the cherry and stem appear round on a flat piece of paper. We will also work on negative painting techniques, add-ing texture with watercolor and how to make dynamic realistic shadows. This workshop begins on Tuesday morning (no Monday class).
Lynn D. Pratt is a professional artist and signature member in the American Watercolor Society, Vermont, and North East Watercolor Societies. Lynn paints in a photorealistic style which she adopted from her background in architecture and her love for detail and perfectionist nature shows in her paintings. She is an award- winning artist, demonstrator, juror and water-color instructor and showcases her work in solo shows, international exhibitions and galleries. Her outlet was studying with a group of Akron-area painters whom to this day she accredits her skills and to this day considers them masters. In 2004 she moved to central Florida and quickly established herself on the art show circuit. At this time, she switched to painting with acrylics and loved the freedom this medium has to offer. Today Jane operates her own gallery and classroom in down-town Mount Dora, Florida. Jane also travels across the eastern United States teaching her popular Acrylic work-shops. Jane is an award -winning painter, an experienced art show poster-artist, and has produced two successful “How To” instructional acrylic painting DVD’s.

She loves to experiment by mixing a variety of mediums together and finding out what happens. Nothing excites her more than creating a new piece of art. She is a graduate from Sandhills Com-munity College, in Southern Pines, NC and is working on finishing her Bachelor degree.

This workshop is a no-nonsense approach to water-color. It is designed to help students at every skill level, to master techniques, work on design, and color. Learn to paint boldly, think outside the box and paint outside the lines, with examples of basic color mixing including lus-cious greens, glowing white, great grays, and rich blacks. Focus on figures, animals, and birds, and even an occa-sional floral. Help with recipes for great skin tones, good ways to paint hair, how to choose good photographs to work from, and much more. Janet Rogers Expressive Watercolors: From Flowers to Figures

Fresh flowers in the studio will be the inspiration for the beginning of this dynamic workshop – progressing to the head and figure. Through a series of fun painting exercises, students will develop a more loose and natu-ral approach – giving them an opportunity to be more spontaneous and expressive in their paintings. In our ap-proach to learning how to interpret the head and figure, we will learn to express translucent flesh tones, while focusing on the gesture of the person. Painting children will also be covered. We will work primarily from photos. Besides class demonstrations throughout the workshop, Janet will work individually with each person also, mak-ing sure they understand the painting concepts – a truly “hands on” experience. Focusing on discovering how to control and making dynamic color, design and expres-sion, we will also have “Show and Tell” – an opportunity to share and see how we exceed in our expectations!
Janet Rogers has been a working professional artist for over 34 years, and is a National Instructor, conducting workshops across the United States and Europe. She is a Signature Member of the American Watercolor Society, Florida Watercolor Society, as well as others, winning many awards for her paintings. As well as a National Instructor, she has demonstrated extensively for various groups and exhibitions. Sue ArcherAchieving Textures & Alternative Surfaces

Sue’s goal as an instructor is to present you with as much design and color theory information as time allows and encourage you to take advantage of the many “wet into wet” qualities of watercolor. You will be experiment-ing with textures and incorporating texture into your own work if you desire. Sue will introduce you to several alter-native surfaces. Those students who do not want to work on textures, but wish to receive help with color and de-sign, and on their own paintings (on traditional papers), are also welcome in this workshop; and you may work in any genre you wish. Finished paintings are not the ob-jective; the planning and designing of your painting is. Your days will be filled with daily demos, lectures, color or design projects, and on-going critiques. A personal, one on one consultation time will be available. This is a studio workshop.
Sue is a studio and plein-aire artist, national workshop instructor, and national juror and judge for watercolor ex-hibitions. She participated in Art Festivals in Florida from 1985 -2014. She still shows her work in national water-color exhibitions. Since Sue began exhibiting her work in 1985, she has won over 200 state and national awards; has received a Florida State Individual Artist Fellowship grant for painting; and has a DVD “Commanding Color”. For 25 years Sue had painted large still-lifes showing strong light and with textural interest. Now she is doing abstracted-textural work, close-up or mid-distant land-scapes, and some figurative work; studio and plein-aire. Painting the effect of light on her subjects is still a passion of hers.

Robert Burridge, a noted award-winning Industrial Designer who, after twenty-five years in the corporate world, focused his life to painting every day. Burridge at-tributes his success to his education from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, his stint as an adjunct pro-fessor at Cooper Union in New York City, and in 1966, his Fluxus art performances with Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Jim McWilliams and Charlotte Moorman. His work hangs in permanent collections of international embassies, corporate galleries and art colleges. His solo museum exhibitions received positive attention, so he was invited to exhibit his paintings at the Smithsonian Folklife Circus Arts Festival in Washington, DC.

John LovettEdit, Adjust, Manipulate: Make the Most of YourSubject

In this workshop we will explore the hows and whys of editing and adjusting our subject to amplify its character and create more impact and engagement for the viewer. Re-working the subject and seeking out similar subjects allows you to experiment and stretch the ideas in various directions. Play around, experiment and take risks – don’t feel you have to produce masterpieces. It’s much better to occasionally have things go wrong than to constantly take the same safe approach. The main thing to keep in mind is not to simply describe or copy, but to discover and expand on an aspect of your painting subject that will cause the viewer to see it in a different way. John’s work possesses an emotive power and vitality that is enhanced by his use of light, colour and strong sense of design. Australian artist, John Lovett was born in Cooma, NSW, in 1953. He studied at the National Art School, New-castle, and has been painting professionally since 1979. He has held over 40 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous mixed exhibitions. He travels extensively throughout Australia and overseas, and his love of the landscape, people and environment are evident in his work. John conducts workshops in Australia, Europe, The US, Canada, and Asia. Laurin McCracken Painting Silver & Crystal: Realism in Watercolor

This is a workshop for artists who are interested in learning to paint in the realistic style of the Dutch and Flemish still life painters of the 16th and 7th century. Participants will learn how to see, draw and paint objects in realistic detail. Participants will paint a simple still life of a silver and crystal with fruit from a photo provided. Participants will use a projected image to trace the still life on to their paper. Laurin will teach the British, Two-Brush technique of how to make things look round and three dimensional. He will also share information about the history of realistic still life painting and its current popularity in the world market. You will also learn to create deep black backgrounds. Participants will learn about various techniques of painting realism. These techniques can apply to many types of subject matter. The goal is to learn a lot and enjoy the journey.
Laurin McCracken, AWS, NWS, is a realist watercolorist. Many of his signature paintings feature deep black backgrounds. His approach to still life painting emulates that of the Dutch and Flemish still life painters of the 16th and 17th centuries. His paintings have won multiple awards and have been included in competitive and invited exhibitions around the world. He is well known as a teacher that works closely with his students to help them improve their painting techniques while learning many intriguing things about the art and techniques of watercolor.

Antonio Masi A Modern Approach to Watercolor

The goal of this workshop is to show the untapped power of watercolor. The focus will be on how to ap-proach this medium from a contemporary point of view, (powerful, emotional, and delicate), not the traditional transparent way. Antonio applies watercolor in a thick and juicy manner, giving his subjects a startling boldness. Learn how attention to details and unusual perspective make for poetic, moody works with strong textural quali-ties. Antonio’s presentation will show the materials he uses (paints, paper, palette, brushes, etc.), his set-up, and how he applies colors. Although he is known for his bridge paintings, he will demonstrate different subjects. He also presents alternative techniques in watercolor. He will do a demonstration in the morning, while students watch and ask questions. The remainder of the day will be one-to-one instruction. He hopes this will give an insight into his technique. The aim is for each student to discover, be inspired, and find his or her own style and inner voice.
Antonio Masi is the president of the American Wa-tercolor Society and International renowned painter. He has had feature articles in “The Artist’s Magazine”, PBS – “Sunday Arts”, NBC-TV “Weekend Today in New York”, Newsday feature in Aug. 2008, “Bridgemaster”, and The New York Times video, Sept. 2014 titled, “Living City: A Tale of Two Bridges”. In June 2009, he had a solo exhi-bition for The New York Centennial Commission of the Queensboro Bridge, in 2010, a solo show at The Forbes Gallery in New York City, and the New York City Transit Museum in 2012. Fordham University Press published a book on his paintings titled, “New York’s Golden Age of Bridges”, with essays by Joan Marans Dim. His second book of his paintings titled, “Lady Liberty” was published in 2019.

Frank EberFinding Individual Expression

The workshop will continue in the tradition of the 20th Century California Barbizon movement (“intimate works, painted with a limited palette; softly expressive, suggestive rather than detailed”), focus on emotional re-sponses to nature, and encourage the individual artist’s expression while balancing the forces at play in creation of a painting. Topics will include design and composition, color and lighting, positives and negatives, simplification of shape, and atmospheric effects. Frank’s watercolor workshops reach beyond technique, encouraging indi-vidual expression and observing the elusive balance of forces that create beauty in painting. All levels are wel-come, but students should have an understanding of the watercolor medium and of simple one-point perspective. Frank stresses a solid foundation in the basics, “…so that our focus is on creating timeless art. An emotional link is necessary in our work, as well as the connection to the vibrancy of everything we paint.” This is a 4-day work-shop--NO Friday class.
Frank grew up in Europe and was mentored by Italian master painter Renato Casaro in the 90s. In the 80s and 90s Frank worked as a professional illustrator for video cover sleeves and as a portrait artist by commission. He lived for three years in the south of France, and has painted on location in many countries around the world. He is also an accomplished Portrait painter. Frank is an award-winning watercolor artist and Signature member of the American Watercolor Society (AWS), the National Watercolor Society (NWS) and the Transparent Water-color Society of America (TWSA). He is a juried Artist member of the prestigious California Art Club. Frank’s paintings have won numerous awards worldwide, and he has been featured in many prominant publications. Frank conducts workshops and demonstrations nationally and internationally.

In this workshop, students will paint florals using vari-ous watercolor techniques and learn how to mount and “frame” their watercolor paintings without glass. Top-ics include: how to loosen up your paintings by using lost and found edges, how to add shapes using negative painting, and how to incorporate a whimsical element into your paintings using “frisket”. Upon cancellation of a workshop by Cheap Joe’s or the instructor, a full refund or offer to transfer to a different workshop of equal value will be issued. When you register for a class you agree to these terms.
In the event of a catastrophic event, local, state, or national emergency, please be patient as we evaluate the situation for each individual workshop. We will make a decision regarding the cancellation of the workshop as early as possible and our Workshop Coordinator will contact you as soon as a decision has been made. If a workshop cancellation is a result of a catastrophic event, or state of emergency, you will receive either a full refund or a credit towards a future workshop (at your discretion), regardless of the date of cancellation.

WORKSHOP LOCATION: Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff374 Industrial Park Drive Boone, NC 28607.
Cheap Joe’s workshops are held in our Workshop Studio at the Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff facility in Boone, NC. Please call us if needed at 1-800-227-2788 or 828-263-5472 (local).
We are located in the northwest mountainous corner of North Carolina. There are three recommended airports in North Carolina for your travel: Greensboro (Piedmont Triad International Airport, GSO), Charlotte (Charlotte Douglas International Airport, CLT), and Asheville (Asheville Regional Airport, AVL). Each is approximately a two hour drive from us (each from a different direction).
Greensboro or Charlotte is an easier drive. The road from Asheville is a more complicated and curvy mountain road. There is also an airport in Eastern Tennessee (Tri-Cities Airport, TRI), that is closer, but involves curvy, mountain driving. From any of the airports, you can rent a car for the week (These reservations should be made ahead of time). Cheap Joe’s is located in the Watauga County Industrial Park, just inside the Boone city limits off of Highway 421. Turn at the stoplight on to Industrial Park Drive, across the road from Watauga High School.
LODGING: Several popular hotels in the area offer a discount for workshop participants. A full list of lodging options will be mailed to you upon registration, as well as, what’s listed to the right.
CLASSROOM HOURS: Our workshops run Monday through Thursday, 9 AM—4 PM and Friday, 9 AM—1 PM, unless otherwise specified. The studio will be unlocked at 8:00 AM for those who wish to arrive early. You may stay until 5:45 PM.
SUPPLIES: Cheap Joe’s Outlet Store is connected to the Workshop Studio, so you can make purchases as you need them. The store will happily run an open account for you. The store opens for workshop students at 8:30 AM. You will receive a discount on supplies purchased in the store during your workshop. You can also contact our call center at 1-800-227-2788 and place an order to be held for your arrival.
FOOD: Lunch will be provided for you Monday through Thursday. Lunch is “on your own” for Plein Air workshops, unless inclement weather prevents painting on location. You may pack your lunch or go out to eat if you wish.Several restaurants are located within one mile of Cheap Joe’s, and very convenient to the hotels. There is a take out service available for delivery from area restaurants to you.
PETS: Although we are animal lovers at Cheap Joe’s, we must ask that you please DO NOT bring your pets with you to the studio. DO NOT leave them in your car, and DO NOT leave them on the porch in front of the studio during workshops. Only service animals by definition of the ADA/US Department of Justice are allowed at Cheap Joe’s. ada.gov/service_animals_2010.htm
PROMOTIONS: If you register at least 6 months in advance and pay in full at time of registering, you’ll receive 10% off. If you sign up for more than 3 workshops in the same year, you will receive a 15% discount* for each additional workshop beyond the third.
Only one discount can be applied per workshop and discounts cannot be combined with any other promotional offer.
