Welcome

Kenbe fem,

Conor Shapiro President & CEO Health Equity International / St. Boniface Hospital

Dear Friends,

Thank you for joining us for our 2021 Virtual Gala.

This August, I worked on the ground at St. Boniface Hospital to help coordinate the earthquake relief effort. I was deeply moved to see our entire staff rise to meet yet another extraordinary challenge.

I am delighted to honor their heroism and bravery by sharing their accomplishments from the last year, made possible by your invaluable support.

Throughout 2021, we combatted a surge in COVID-19 cases while fighting for—and winning—access to vaccines for our staff and patients.

We navigated global stockouts and dangerous unrest to ensure vital medications and supplies reached the people who needed them.

And in the wake of the earthquake, we immediately provided survivors with life-saving care. We will continue to be there for every survivor for the duration of their recovery, no matter how long it takes.

You have been a critical part of our team, every step of the way. Despite the continued impact the pandemic has had in your life, you ensured we had the resources we needed to meet every challenge.

I hope that you enjoy this evening’s program and that you take pride in all that you have helped us accomplish. We are truly grateful.

Our Honoree

Pastor, Saint Cecilia Parish

Father John Unni

Father John Unni has been pastor at Boston’s Saint Cecilia Parish for the past 17 years. There, he has focused his ministry on education, health, and spiritual growth—especially for those who are marginalized and impoverished. As a young man, Fr. Unni visited Haiti; this trip had a profound impact on his life and continues to guide his notions of equity and justice. He believes that as a priest, he is called to help people understand the important roles compassion and generosity can, and should, play in all our lives.

Fr. Unni has lent his unique talents to Health Equity International/St. Boniface Hospital’s Board of Directors since 2014, bringing both passion and levity to the work. He is also currently serving as a prestigious Barr Fellow. We are grateful to Fr. John for his partnership and his tireless support of the people of southern Haiti.

Congratulations, Fr. John! Your compassion, dedication, and humor are essential assets to all of the important endeavors in which you engage. We are so proud to see a beacon of community hope and service like you celebrated on this important night. And thank you to all of the amazing HEI and SBH team members for tirelessly delivering quality care to all who entered your doors during this most challenging year.

Brendan and Kerry Swords

Fr. John Unni counsels all of us with the following wisdom: “Do your job; make the world a better place”, and Fr. John role models that in his own work. St. Boniface Hospital in Haiti makes the world a better place.

Charles A. Walsh III

John, your nonjudgmental approach and openness inspires all of us to believe in the goodness of God. Your homilies are straightforward from the heart (albeit a little long ;) and remind us that we need to be active “doers” helping those in need. You live that example and instill the same in those who know you. Thank you for reigniting my faith in the Church and man.

The Floor Family

We are deeply grateful to have Father John’s and Health Equity International’s compassionate leadership in the world. They set an example for all of us to stand up for the most vulnerable and ensure all people are treated with dignity and respect. We are so very thankful for their tireless work.

Tracey and John Cannistraro and Family

Congratulations Dr. and Fr. John!

Father John continues to bring such passion and energy to HEI and the mission of the hospital, that it is a privilege to be able to help support his efforts and those of the entire team.
