to serve three (3) years. Thereafter, a Trustee shall be elected for a term of
three (3) years at the time of election of Officers.
And, be it further resolved that Section 803 be changed to say:
.Sec. 803—Appointive Officers
• Local, District and County Council Presidents shall appoint a Secretary, Chaplain,
Conductress and Guard.
• Department and National Presidents shall appoint a Secretary and Chief of Staff.

2020-2021 REPORTS OF NATIONAL OFFICERSVETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS OF THE UNITED STATES AUXILIARY

Sandi Onstwedder
National President
2020-2021
Sandi Onstwedder of White Cloud, Michigan, was elected National President of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of the United States Auxiliary for the 2020-2021 Program Year. A Life Member of Hough-Pontius Auxiliary 3701, she joined on the eligibility of her brother, who served in the U.S. Navy from 1963-1967. She has served the organization in many capacities including Auxiliary and District President. As Department (state) President she earned Outstanding President of the Year for her membership group. On the National level she has served as Director for the Voice of Democracy/Patriot’s Pen and Americanism/Patriotic Instructor Programs and Big Ten Chairman for the Veterans & Family Support and Community Service Programs. Sandi spent 35 years working as a Literacy Skills teacher. She served as Summer Director of VFW Camp Trotter in Michigan for 11 years and six years on the Michigan Freedom Foundation Board of Directors. She is a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Military Order of the Cooties, and holds Life membership in both the VFW Camp Trotter and VFW National Home for Children. In her spare time she enjoys exploring the great outdoors. Sandi and husband Charles’ family includes five children, 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

What a prestigious honor you each bestowed upon me by electing me to the position of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary National President. My gratitude to all of you for entrusting me to hold this leadership position. I tried my best to represent our organization by encouraging all members to Honor Our Mission to Serve Veterans.
This was a year of firsts for many of us. The pandemic raged on with little to no hope of ceasing these past twelve months. Yet, together as members we sought out, and found, new ways to persevere. I was in awe of the many creative ideas that came out of our circumstances of being kept apart. The dedication you exhibited brought warmth to my heart knowing full well that nothing can stop great volunteers who have a set mission in mind.
Many Nationally planned events went by the wayside during the 2020-2021 Program year. Yet, as an organization, our Auxiliary National Headquarters kept all the National Line Officers in the game either in person or remotely by Zoom or teleconferencing. I will boast and say we have some valuable individuals in our leadership chairs. Together we formed a team committed to keeping our organization moving forward.
We tried keeping members informed by using Facebook Live and through a few public service kinds of announcements that I recorded. We also found a way to virtually introduce our two National Guard candidates.
The singular National event that we could pull off in a familiar way was the National Mid-Year Conference. Attendance was nearly 200. Many team-building events came off like clockwork in those six short days. I believe everyone who attended returned home feeling that those few days were well spent and needed!
As the year closes out, I want to thank all members for your dedication and flexibility, and to those of you who donated to my special project, Stars, Stripes and Support. I’m so grateful for your generosity—you are responsible for dramatically improving the lives of our service members who face food insecurity.
I sincerely wish to thank the Department Presidents. I could not be any prouder than I am with each of you. You proved that the first ingredient in leadership is compassion. You each openly shared that.
This year would not have been the success it was if not for the Commander-in-Chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hal Roesch. His dedication to the VFW Auxiliary was on display throughout the entire year. He, along with his lovely bride Beth, welcomed me into their lives and I will be forever grateful.
To the Past National Presidents, National Line Officers, Department of Michigan and most certainly Ann Panteleakos and Janice Criswell I bow my head in dedicated respect. I thank you for always mentoring and inspiring me.
Sincerely,
Sandi Onstwedder
HONORING OUR MISSION TO SERVE VETERANS
HIGHLIGHTS FROM MY YEAR
This year was unlike any other in the history of our organization. Many Department visits were postponed or cancelled and all National events were adapted due to COVID-19 protocols. Top left: I am grateful I was able to be installed as your National President by Vincent “B.J.” Lawrence, Past VFW Commander-in-Chief and current Executive Director of the VFW Washington Office. Top right: It was an honor to have VFW Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief Matthew M. “Fritz” Mihelcic join me and several Auxiliary National Officers at our reimagined Celebrating America’s Freedom Event at the VFW National Home for Children. Bottom right: I am so thankful to the members and Department Presidents who attended the National Mid-Year Conference in Clearwater, Florida. Bottom left: What an awesome experience it was to join VFW Commander-in-Chief Hal J. Roesch II in Rochester, Minn. to surprise the 2020-2021 Voice of Democracy first-place winner, high school junior Erin Stoeckig, with a $30,000 scholarship. Center left: VFW Commander-in-Chief Hal. J. Roesch II and I have been in communication throughout this year, sharing both our challenges and successes. It was wonderful to celebrate all we’ve overcome and have fun in the sun in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic .

National Senior Vice-President Jean HamilWhat words would you use to sum up your year?Focused. Positive. Forward-thinking. If we remain focused on our mission to serve our veterans, their families and our communities we will continue to have positive thoughts. Forward “thinking” is vital to the continued growth of our members and our organization.
What did you learn? We are a strong organization, and we will continue to move forward. As we move our organization forward to a promising future, our members continue to show their strength and diligence. We have overcome the challenges of the past and will strive to work together for a better tomorrow.
What impressed you about our resilience? I saw the dedication of our VFW and VFW Auxiliaries throughout the nation, to provide for our members when faced with challenges that we never could have anticipated. So many members found ways to continue to work for our veterans from the safety of their homes. Members of all different regions and backgrounds demonstrated their loyalty and strengthened our National Programs.
National President Sandi, you served with honor for our veterans, with faith and grace for all members and you led the way for our organization’s future! You selected a great group of Ambassadors who promoted our core Programs. Our members continued to Honor Our Mission to Serve Veterans throughout the year, even when faced with challenging situations. To the National Line Officers, I continue to pledge my support to each of you and we will continue to work together as a unified team. Continued prayers for our nation. God bless the United States of America!
What words would you use to sum up your year? Challenging, innovative and purposeful. Our Auxiliaries faced many challenges this year. Many were not allowed to meet in person. Fundraising to support our Programs came to a sudden halt for many and so many of our members were affected by this pandemic. Our members were determined to carry on our mission despite the challenges. They created new ways of meeting virtually, they taught our older members how to Zoom and they used the internet to raise funds. Our members demonstrated ingenuity, resolve and flexibility.
What did you learn?I learned that even when you are quarantined, (eight times this year) you can still serve veterans and your community. How? You can call and check up on your neighbors, veterans and members. Write articles for your local newspaper on veterans’ issues and our Programs. Zoom meetings became the norm and necessary to continue our mission. Weekly Zooming with my family all over the country was a bonus. I learned to appreciate the limited time spent with friends and family.
What impressed you about our resilience?Resilience is the epitome of our members. Members shopped, delivered meals and picked up medications for veterans and members. They sent cards to hospitalized veterans and members in nursing homes. Auxiliary members lined the streets to cheer on the class of 2020 as they were denied normal graduation ceremonies. VFW Posts and Auxiliaries prepared and delivered free meals for the homebound and senior citizens. Our members continued to serve their communities throughout this taxing year. I am truly honored to serve in this organization. Thank you to National President Sandi Onstwedder for leading us through a challenging year.
National Junior Vice-President Jane Reape

What words would you use to sum up your year? This has been a very trying year with most everyone across the country having limitations on what they could do. However, as I have done some traveling and even here in my state, I continue to experience people that are heartwarming (they put together care packages and get them out to individuals or troops), compassionate (they call just to say hi and make sure you are OK and see if you need anything) and devoted (when it is time to lay someone to rest no matter what, they are there to send the person off to their final resting place.)
What did you learn? You can do anything you put your mind to no matter what others may say. As I communicated through email and Zoom with the Department Chaplains, they were all working hard, sending letters of condolence when someone passed away, a get-well card to someone who was not feeling well, and one person encouraged others to just send a thinking-of-you card. To me, this shows that the individuals we have instituted into our organization are the best in the world. What impressed you about our resilience? We did not let COVID-19 stop us when we couldn’t travel. National President Sandi had the candidates for the 2021-2022 National Guard come to Headquarters and participate in a Facebook Live where members were given the opportunity to ask them questions. I personally want to thank National President Sandi for mentoring and leading us through this past year of trials and tribulations; she is truly a blessing from above. Much love to her, the VFW Auxiliary National Officers and staff, and the Department of Utah who have all made this a terrific year.
National ChaplainCarla Martinez
National ConductressBrenda BryantWhat words would you use to sum up your year? When I think back over the past year, the words that sum it up would be: Roll with the punches! All year long we have waited with anticipation for everything to reopen. When events were planned, we did not hesitate to make them fit into the guidelines we were given. When Department meetings could not be held in person, we Zoomed in to see each other and learned new rules on how to do a meeting. We are the most adaptable and inspiring veterans’ group around.
What did you learn?I learned I can run from terminal to terminal with a mask on and not hyperventilate in the process. I have learned I can tell a person’s facial expression when only looking at their eyes. I am getting really good at understanding a conversation on Zoom even when the person is having a bad connection and I am only getting every few words. Most of all, I have reaffirmed what I always knew and that is what an outstanding group of VFW Auxiliary members we have. You are the greatest!
What impressed you about our resilience? We have watched our members adapting by thinking outside the box about how to help our veterans, their families and our communities. When our members were told they could not go into veterans’ homes and hospitals, they changed course and found things they could send to these facilities to help our veterans. They even conducted parades where everyone would decorate their cars, drive by the veterans’ homes and wave their Flags.
National President Sandi Onstwedder, you are an inspiration for all of us. You have guided us during a time when most would have given up. Thanks for being my friend.
National GuardLois CallahanWhat words would you use to sum up your year? While Honoring Our Mission to Serve Veterans, this past year gave us ample opportunity to practice patience. Families were asked to shelter in place. Our schedules and routines were interrupted, events were cancelled, schools shut their doors and many businesses closed.
In response, we demonstrated amazing adaptability. We discovered new ways to reach out and stay connected. We worked with and around restrictions and continued serving America’s veterans and their families.
I believe that these adversities only served to make us stronger. We kept our hearts and minds on the objectives of the organization. We kept our eyes on our goals and completed this year with resounding success.
What did you learn? One thing has become very clear to me: No one can complete the goals and objectives of this organization alone. Each indi-vidual contribution may seem small, but when considering all the work we do collectively, mountains have been moved and the world has been changed for the better.
What impressed you about our resilience?I’m always proud to watch Arkansas’ members find interesting and innovative ways to serve veterans in their communities. This year, however, I have seen excellent examples of service from all over our great country. From large operations of giving to individual acts of kindness, I’m so proud to be part of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
How fortunate we are to have had Sandi Onstwedder serving as National President during this Program Year. Her confident, steadfast leadership has been just what we needed to remain on track and moving forward. Thank you, Sandi, for always modeling grace while navigating these difficult times.

National Secretary-TreasurerAnn PanteleakosWhat words would you use to sum up your year? I was impressed at how we pulled together our one-day Mini-Convention. We were all new to using Zoom and yet we managed to hold a hybrid meeting with Presidents, Council Members, PNPs and National Appointed Officers. All those entitled to vote were given the opportunity to vote. I was impressed by the Departments for embracing the technology and having the commitment to make it work. My staff and Condado (our IT company) went above and beyond. Those in attendance were respectful of the COVID-19 rules and regulations and we got the job done with only a few minor hiccups. Everchanging best describes the pandemic, the organization and especially the events this year. We changed from a full CAFE to an abbreviated CAFE. We
changed from in-person Junior-Vice training to a virtual training. We changed our Mid-Year Conference from a cruise to a resort and finally, we went from a full National Convention in Baltimore to a business-only National Convention in Kansas City. I am thankful to all the officers and members for your understanding and patience when all these changes had to take effect. I am also thankful for all of the Auxiliaries that supported their Posts with monetary donations during the pandemic. It is truly appreciated.
What did you learn?I was once told that I was good on my feet and could adapt to change effortlessly. Until now, I never believed that to be true. I learned how to adapt, change and move forward in a short span of time. With the help of my staff, Linda Evans, Val Cooper and Vanessa Kane (of the VFW), we got it done.
What impressed you about our resilience? We chose to move forward, and we did just that. With all the restrictions imposed on us by our states, we still managed to get things done. We continued to recruit new members and institute new Auxiliaries. I really enjoyed reading the stories in our E-Newsletter and National magazine about collecting and delivering items to the VA. This may not have been done in the usual manner, but it was done. The number of books donated was astounding. The virtual Voice of Democracy Parade of Winners was so impressive. I could go on and on. All Officers and members, on all levels of the VFW Auxiliary need to be commended for all you do each and every day, pandemic or not.
I have so many other people to thank, starting with Sandi for appointing me as her National Secretary and to the members for electing me as National Treasurer. I want to thank the Line Officers and the PNPs for their support. I would also like to thank Stan and my growing family for being there for me.
To Jean and the Line Officers, I wish you the best for the upcoming year. I am here for you, as we continue to do wonderful things for our organization, our veterans and service members and their families.
Loyally,
Ann Panteleakos

STARS, STRIPES AND SUPPORT
One in eight Americans faces food insecurity – a state of being without reliable access to affordable, nutritious food – and many of our service members and veterans find this an all-too familiar burden. Research shows that 25 percent of our nation’s total active-duty and reserve personnel seek aid from food pantries. The high cost of living in many areas of our country requires that members of our nation’s military apply for food stamps or other financial assistance. This year, members of the VFW Auxiliary stepped up and provided assistance to help combat this issue.
Stars, Stripes and Support funds will flow through the VFW’s Unmet Needs program. The VFW’s Unmet Needs program, created in 2004, has awarded millions of dollars in individual grants of up to $1,500 to help veterans and service members make ends meet. Service members, veterans and their family members can submit the Unmet Needs application online. To learn more about the program, including how to qualify, visit vfw.org/UnmetNeeds. To donate to the Unmet Needs fund, visit https://heroes.vfw.org and then click on the donate button at the top of the page.
More than 750 members, Auxiliaries, Posts, VFW and VFW Auxiliary Districts and Departments gave more than $100,000 to combat food insecurity among our nation’s military service personnel and their families. Those who donated a minimum of $25 to the VFW Foundation earmarked for Unmet Needs - Hunger between July 1, 2020 and April 30, 2021 received a citation. Donations were cumulative and citations were awarded for the highest donation level reached. Citations were mailed directly to the donor in June 2021.
• Platinum: $1,000 or more..................................................................................................22 citations were awarded
• Diamond: $500 - $999........................................................................................................28 citations were awarded
• Gold: $250 - $499.................................................................................................................59 citations were awarded
• Silver: $100 - $249............................................................................................................231 citations were awarded
• Bronze: $25 - $99..............................................................................................................375 citations were awarded
“To the many members who have donated, I cannot thank you enough for helping us help those who have selflessly stepped up to serve our country,” said National President Sandi Onstwedder. “This support has been incredibly important. Know that your generosity has made a huge difference for veterans, service members and their families during this time when many are faced with additional stressors of unemployment, illness and medical expenses.”
