CULTURE Shakespeare’s Henry V: Rhetoric to Meet a Myriad of Leadership Challenges

    Instructor: Fran HelphinstineDates and Times: Tuesdays, Feb. 23rd – March 30th, 10 – 11:30amLocation: ZoomMaximum Enrollment: 20 | Course Fee: $20

Although a war play, Henry V contains little or no military action, or discussion of politics and strategies. As Alexan-der Leggatt once noted, Shakespeare is more interested in the feelings and imaginations of his characters. Again and again, the play performs a shift from the political to the per-sonal, whether indirectly in Henry’s interactions with the other characters, especially in disguise when he can reveal his truest and innermost feelings to the common soldiers, feelings that he could never articulate in his role as king or in isolated speeches and soliloquies where we learn the personal toll of leadership. If the Chorus is successful, we as audience will imagine among other topics, the emo-tions triggered by proposed bills which affect wealth, the contrasting views of international law and even of citizens performing different tasks in cooperation toward a common goal, when language reflects diversity of the population and variance in cultural values and past history, views of the commoners juxtaposed to the views of those of the court, war as money making opportunity for some, language as a weapon for others, and public versus personal perspective on Katherine and Henry’s political marriage.

Traveling Around the World, Part XIII: From Western Pacific to Far East & More

Facilitator: Linda Hornick Dates and Times: Wednesdays, Feb. 24th – March 31st, 10 – 11:30am Location: ZoomMaximum Enrollment: 20 | Course Fee: $20

The thirteenth installment of this popular series takes us as far and wide as all the others. Starting with Larry Dixon’s travels (the Dominican Republic, Montana, and Kentucky day trips), we continue our excursions with Joey Conrad (the Big Island in Hawaii), Steve Barker (“The Stans” of cen-tral Asia), Dr. Ann Colbert (Belize), Carolyn Franzini (China and Morehead’s sister city Yangshuo), and Steve Bonney (a tour of nature).

SHARED INTEREST GROUPS (NO COURSE FEE) (NOTE: SIG enrollments are carried over from the fall term, so the available seats may be fewer than the maximum listed.)

Great Decisions Facilitator: Bob LindahlDates and Times: Beginning Thursday, Feb. 25th, 10 – 11:30 a.m.Location: Zoom Maximum Enrollment: 25

The Foreign Policy Association’s Great Decisions grassroots initiative began in 1954 and has grown to tens of thousands participating each year. The program provides information and a format for groups to discuss the “…most critical glob-al issues facing America today.” Members learn together as they exercise critical thinking skills and share their per-sonal understandings of issues that are sometimes complex and controversial. The Great Decisions workbook typically contains eight topics, with this group discussing the first four in the spring, and the last four in the fall. The topics for the Spring 2021 SIG are the following: Global Supply Chains and National Security, Persian Gulf Security Issues, Brexit and the European Union, and Struggles Over the Melting Arctic. SIG members are encouraged to purchase the Great Decisions 2021 Briefing Book (available at fpa.org, as well as Amazon for a Kindle version).

Non-fiction BooksFacilitator: Karen RobertsDates and Times: Second Monday of each month (ongoing), 2 p.m.Location: Zoom Maximum Enrollment: 9

Join us as we get together to discuss a variety of non-fiction books. SIG members brainstorm and choose which books will be discussed in the coming months. Books have included topics on history, biography, science, current events and more! Books are usually selected from the New York Times Best Seller’s List.

    TED TalksInstructor: Drew HendersonDates and Times: Wednesdays, April 7th – 28th, 12:30 – 2pmLocation: ZoomMaximum Enrollment: 20

TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design) Talks is a series of videos (originally from TED conferences) featuring speak-ers with “Ideas worth sharing.” This SIG will take advantage of the wide variety of topics in the program by watching one or two of the videos (with a maximum time of 30 minutes), followed by discussion.

    TV TalkInstructor: Drew HendersonDates and Times: Wednesdays, March 3rd – 31st, 12:30 – 1:30pmLocation: ZoomMaximum Enrollment: 20

A modification to Russ Brengelman’s Osher Classic Movie Series, this course will be more like the Non-fiction Book SIG. Participants will choose something to watch each week (pref-erably on broadcast TV, so as to make it as available to every-one as possible), then come together via Zoom to discuss. In the fall, we watched the Classic Movie series on KET. Other possible choices include other PBS programs (NOVA, Nature, etc.) and other sources to which all participants have access.
