Troop Guides, Patrol Leaders, and Senior Patrol Leaders,

Welcome to the first Northern District Fall Camporee. The theme for this event is “WE ARE THE NORSE!” Norse is the old English word for North, but it also referred to the people in Northern Europe better known as Vikings. Hence all activities are Viking related. A few things to remember this weekend

1. Have fun. Don’t be afraid to try new things.

2. Invite Webelos and Arrow of Light Cub Scouts to camp with you and try their hand at some events. This is a great way to recruit new Scouts.

3. Last year, several counties merged into one new district. Be prepared to share campsites and make new friends with Scouts in other counties

4. Updates to this guide will probably happen. As we get asked questions that need clarification, and events outside our control happen, i.e. hurricanes and COVID, et cetera, updates will be made. We thank you in advance for your patience in this.

5. We hope you have a lot of fun this weekend.

6. For the SPLs that attended the planning meeting for this, THANK YOU! The PLC is invited to a meet-ing Friday Night. SPLs will meet Saturday Night to do a “Thorns and Roses” as well as give us ideas for next year.

7. Patches will be given to you Troop’s Scouters after the camporee.

8. Bring your fishing gear for when you have free time.

Scouters,

Thank you for attending. We know district mergers can be challenging, and we will be doing our best to have fun, get to know one another and build up the Northern District. The Adult Cook Off will double as a social for the adults so we can get to know one another. We thank you in advance for your patience.

One thing we are doing differently is we will be handing out patches AFTER the camporee. With COVID still causing problems in other parts of the country, we want to be safe and minimize expenses. By ordering closer to the camporee date, we not only make sure the camporee is still happening, but also order exactly what we need. We thank you in advance.

Webelos Den Leaders and Cub Masters,

We encourage you to work with a troop and have all of your Webelos/AOL Cub Scouts and parents, both 4th and 5th Graders, attend, even if only for a day. The transition from Cub Scout to Scouts BSA can be a challenging one if your Webelos and parents are not prepared for it. This event will be a great way to introduce your Weblos and AOLs to Scouts BSA: seeing patrols in action.

Sincerely,

The Camporee Crew

EVENTS, ACTIVITIES, AND POINTS

The primary events and activities will be based upon the Scouting Skills that the Norse, aka the Vikings,

used. Other events and activities will be for fun, to learn, and to show Scout Spirit.

Friday Night: Hike In and Check In, 10 Points

Vikings had no problem marching distances after landing their boats. Beginning at the Camp Charles Sign at

the corner of Camp Charles Road and Boy Scout Road, Scouts will be dropped off and hike in to the Hawley

Center. They do not need to carry their own gear, just their Patrol Flag. Check in will finalize registration, give

out scorecards, and provide updated information.

Needed: Patrol Roster, Patrol Flag, and Patrol Yell

Scoring: Hike in= 4 Points Patrol Roster= 2 Points

Patrol Flag= 2 Points Patrol Yell= 2 Points

Bonus Event: Patrol Costume Contest, 10 points

Entire Patrols wearing and incorporating Norse, or Viking, themed costumes and accessories get 10 bonus

points.

Orienteering and Rowing, 10 Points

The Norse were excellent navigators that sailed

from Canada in the West to Russia in the East, and

Finland in the North to North Africa in the South.

Their ships used a combination of sail and oars to

travel, explore, trade, and raid. Today, Orienteering

is a vital Scout navigation skill that can get you to

places, and prevent you from getting lost. The abil-

ity use a boat not only provides transportation and

more adventure, it is also one of the for ways of

lifesaving.

Starting from the dock, you will shoot a bearing and

row to the Control Point. Record the Control Point, then shoot the next bearing and repeat. The key is to get

the Control Points in the correct order.

Needed: 2 BSA Swimmer Classified Scouts, Compass

Supplied: Rowboat, Oars, PFDs

Scoring: 2 points each for correct Control Point

Fire and Water, Time Based

Fire and Water are both needed to survive in any environment. Vikings used Flint and Steel to start fires. Boiling water is the best way to purify water to make it drinkable. For this event Patrols will use Flint and Steel to build a fire, and boil water in a paper cup.

Needed: Wood Tools and Water

Supplied: Flint, Steel, charcloth, wood

Scoring: Time Based.

Page 7: 2021 Northern District, E Fall amporee WE ARE THE NORSE!

First Aid, 30 points

“If an injury becomes life threatening, first aid becomes the most important

thing to do.”

First Aid is a vital skill that Scouts are known for. But you must use the

skills or lose them. And you must keep up as techniques change about every

five years.

Patrol Leader will select a card with a first aid scenario based upon Tender-

foot, Second Class, and First Class Rank requirements. Anything from the

requirements goes including transport and CPR can be an option. “BE PRE-

PARED.“

Needed: Practice First Aid Kit

Supplied: Stretcher Supplies, Practice AED

Scoring: Varied based upon scenario selected, All Scenarios value is 30 points.

Saturday Competition Event #4: Axe throwing, 10 Points

Vikings considered the axe a multipurpose tool. It could be used for building, repairing items, games, as well

as for defense. One game was axe throwing. For this event Patrol members will get three throws at a target.

Each axe that sticks is a point with a max of ten points.

NOTES:

1. This event falls under BSA’s Shooting Sports Guidelines. All shooting sports rules will be followed.

DO NOT CROSS UNDER OR OVER CAUTION TAPE! This is for everyone’s safety.

2. This event will open for Scouts after 10:30AM to allow Webelos and AOLs the opportunity to do Archery

since they cannot do axe throwing.

3. Since Cub Scouts cannot do axe throwing, Webelos and AOLs will have the opportunity to do Archery

from 9:00AM to 10:30 AM

Needed: First Aid Kit

Supplied: Throwing Axes and Target

Scoring: One point per stick with a max of 10.

Page 8: 2021 Northern District, E Fall amporee WE ARE THE NORSE!

Saturday Webelos and AOLs Event: Archery

Vikings used archery fro hunting and defense. This event is only for Webelos and AOLs

NOTES:

1. This event falls under BSA’s Shooting Sports

Guidelines. All shooting sports rules will be

followed. DO NOT CROSS UNDER OR

OVER CAUTION TAPE! This is for

everyone’s safety.

2. Since Cub Scouts cannot do axe throwing,

Webelos and AOLs will have the opportunity

to do Archery from 9:00AM to 10:30 AM

3. After 10:30, the event will revert to Axe

Throwing for the Scouts.

Saturday Competition Event #5: Pioneering, 50 Points

The Norse, like other seafarers, were experts with Pioneering: the art of knots and lashings. Pioneering was not only used aboard their long ships, but also wherever they went on land. From rigging sales and repairing masts, to building shelters on uninhabited lands, Vikings used pioneering.

For this event, Patrols will raise a longship’s mast using bamboo poles, approximately 10 to 12 feet long. You will need to lash the crosspiece, and attach a Viking themed sail OR a sail with your Patrol Emblem on it. You will then tie four (4) guy lines to the mast. Then you will raise and anchor the mast.

NOTE: Poles used will be bamboo. Recommend the Japanese Mark II, aka Mark II, Square Lashing instead of traditional Square Lashing. It is in the handbook and also here https://troopresources.scouting.org/square-lashing/

Needed: Sail with Viking Theme image or Patrol Emblem on it, Rope to Tie it on to crossbeam

Supplied: 2 bamboo poles, Stakes, Rope for guylines and bottom of sail

Scoring: Lashing= 10 Points Knots= 30 points Sail= 10 Points

Ideas for guy line place can be found at the resources below

Scouts BSA Cook Off, 6-10 points

Cooking was a life skill in the Viking era, and it continues to be one today. Two favorite dessert ingredients

were Blueberries and Raspberries. For this event, Patrols will create a dessert at camp, in any manner they

choose, using either blueberries or raspberries as an ingredient.

Needed: All supplies and ingredients

Supplied: None

Scoring: 1st Place= 10 Points 2nd Place= 9 Points 3rd Place= 8 Points Participation= 6 Points

Webelos and AOLs’ Cook Off, Bragging Rights

We will have a Webelos/AOL Cook Off Division to get them pumped up about Scouting. Same requirements as the Scouts BSA Cook Off, except ribbons will be awarded. We really want the Webelos and AOLs to do the work, and minimize adults working on the dish.

Needed: All supplies and ingredients

Supplied: None

Scouter Cook Off and Social, Bragging Rights

Since we are a new district, do need to get to know one another. The purpose of this event for the adults is to

get to know one another and develop relationships so that we can grow the district. But let’s face it, a little

good natured competition never hurt. Same rules as the Scouts BSA Cook Off Competition above: create a

dessert at camp, in any manner they choose, using either blueberries or raspberries as an ingredient.

Needed: All supplies and ingredients Supplied: None

OTHER EVENTS

Campsite Inspection

Campsites need to be neat and orderly. If clotheslines are used, they should be strung so that they do not pre-sent a hazard. Fire tools need to be stored within easy access. Equipment should be stored away and clean. Du-ty rosters need to be filled out and posted. Patrol first aid kits need to be visible to the judges. Ax yards must be able to be a full swing of an ax all around and easily recognizable. Due to issues last year, all motorized vehicles must remain in designated parking areas and not in the camping areas. If camporee staff need a vehicle to transport equipment and supplies a pass will be issued.

Halloween Costume Contest

Since the camporee is the weekend before Halloween, it was suggested to add a Halloween Costume Contest.

Costume judging will be at the Campfire.
