Ride The Rockies is a fully supported Tour. Route support and safety services include:

• Aid stations• Route signage• Bike Technicians• CO State Patrol• Ride officials• Ride medics• Ambulances• SAG vehicles• Course Marshals• Assistance from local law

enforcement

If you are unable to ride, SAG vehicles will be available to transport you and your bicycles. It is critical that SAG vehicles are not misused. They are on the route to support cyclists and need and are not there to ensure you make your dinner reservations. If we have riders that use SAG’s more than three times, alternative means of transporting you to the next destination town will be explored and ultimately exercised. Simply put, TRAIN for this ride and do not misuse this critical support service. When you are on the side of the road and see a SAG vehicle, please give them a thumbs up if you are okay or a thumbs down if you need assistance.

Please note there is a bus at Headquarters every morning to transport people to the next town if they feel they cannot ride. If you take the morning bus your bicycle will travel on the luggage truck and you will be responsible for removing it from the truck and bringing it to the bike corral.

As restrictions are loosening, we ask that you do the following:

• Be respectful of others and give them spaceo Please keep socially distant as much as possible at aid stations• Masks Wear a mask if you are asked to do so.

o We are traveling through multiple municipalities and we need to be respectful of their rules

o Many businesses will ask that you wear a mask when entering, please do so

• You are required to wear a mask when you are on Southern Ute Reservation Land. This is Day 1 between Mile 6 and Mile 49 and Day 2 between mile 17 and mile 36. This is very important that you heed this request.

• Wash your hands frequently• Please refrain from spitting or snot rocketing. Carry tissues and dispose

of them appropriately

If you are COVID Vaccinated, you can go to see Liz Strawn, Event Manager near the information booth and she will have “I am COVID Vaccinated’ wristbands. You are not required to wear them but they are available if it makes you feel more comfortable. Liz Strawn or Deirdre Moynihan, Tour Director are the only two people that can verify your COVID vaccination status.

Shuttle Service will run from approximately 5:00am – 8:30am in the departure town and from approximately 12pm – 9pm in the destination town. Specific shuttle times for lodging are listed under each town section.

DEVICE CHARGING: There are 3 options available. All

can be found at HQ.Cycle Riders Lawyer Charging Station (LOGO please!) Drop off your battery to be charged and pick it up in an hour or so.

Backroads Battery will be renting out battery packs to charge your mobile devices throughout the week.

PedalCells – Buy a very cool device that attaches to your bike and charges your device while your ride.

Please note that there are limited outlets available and RTR staff will not monitor or be responsible for any device left charging at an outlet. Do not go into buildings to find outlets

2-Day Parking: 2 Day Tour Participants can park their car at the Cortez Rec Center. There will be one shuttle returning to Durango at 3:30pm. Must pay online or at Info Tent in Durango. $10

DAY 3 LOGISTICS

Day 3 – Tuesday, June 15 – Special NotesDay 3, known as the “Norwood Crusher” is going to be a challenging day. There will be extra SAG support as well as buses on the route and there is no shame in taking a ride if you need it. There are also options for riders staying in Telluride/Mountain Village hotels.

These are the options:

1. Mile 64.9 – The RTR route will take a left on to CR63L. Law enforcement will be onsite to assist with the left-hand turn. Riders that would like to ride their bikes directly to their hotels in Telluride can go straight on Rte 145. IMPORTANT: The route on Rte 145 from that intersection to Telluride is not supported by RTR and you accept the risk of not continuing on the official route. No support means: no signage, no course marshals, no SAGS, no medical, no mechanics, no aid stations. Riders would rejoin the route on Wednesday, June 16th and will ride their bikes from their hotels.

2. Mile 81.1 – (Aid Station #7 – Down Valley Park, Placerville) RTR will provide a 24 hour secured bike corral at Aid Station 7. Riders that are staying in Telluride can leave their bikes at the bike corral and take a shuttle to their hotels. On Wednesday, June 16th the shuttle will take riders from their hotels back to the Aid Station to pick up their bikes and join the ride. Bikes will not be shuttled from Aid Station #7 to Telluride

3. Mile 100.5 – (Norwood Finish) There will be shuttles back and forth from Norwood to Telluride throughout the day and again in the morning on Wednesday, June 16th to start the ride. RTR provides hotel shuttles in each town. Anyone that finishes in Norwood would leave their bike at the secured bike corral at the Norwood Headquarters

We are proud to give away $18,000 in grant money to non-profits from our 2021 Host Communities. A $3,000 grant will be given to the following organizations:

DURANGO - Durango Creative DistrictThe Durango Creative District was formed by a steering committee of arts and culture representatives and passionate community members in the summer of 2018 and is run by Colorado Creative Industries. The Durango Creative District aims to increase jobs, incomes, and investments in creative places. After being launched as a nonprofit agency in January 2020, DCD has been able to fund 11 public art projects through a program called the Durango Art Brigade, develop and draft a 5-year Cultural Plan in partnership with over 60 local arts and culture representatives and City of Durango staff and develop an online Creative Directory in which local creatives can list their goods and services for free.

CORTEZ, DURANGO - United Way of Southwest Colorado UWSC makes grants to nonprofits, manages emergency financial assistance, provides a 211 resource service, provides a volunteer management website, and manages Team UP collective impact work, which includes an AmeriCorps program. During the pandemic, UWSC provided financial coaching for nonprofits, led an effort to provide computer ownership and low-cost broadband for underserved families (PCS for Kids), and started a collaborative group to address significant learning loss and mental health struggles among area students (Team UP for summer). Approximately 10,000 people in Montezuma County are served each year. This work helps people increase education attainment levels, increase personal financial stability, and improve health. At least 66% of those assisted are low income in this rural region that also includes the Southern Ute and Ute Mountain Ute Indian Tribes. The counties of Archuleta, Dolores, La Plata, Montezuma, and San Juan are served.

NORWOOD - Norwood Food Bank (Christ in F.O.C.U.S. Church)

Norwood Food Bank began 11 years ago at Norwood Southern Baptist Church when a few individuals wanted to make a difference by addressing food insecurity issues for people in Norwood. With limited resources and a few dedicated individuals, the Food Bank has been providing food to about 30 families with the intention of supplementing their food resources, not meeting the need entirely. The staff also spends time building relationships and learning what else clients need. Seniors in Nucla and Naturita who receive food through the Senior Commodities Food Program were recently added to the Food Bank’s clientele, doubling the number of families served.

RIDGWAY - Weehawken Creative Arts

Weehawken Creative Arts was established in 2004 with the original goal of economic development for Ouray County through the arts. Unique to WCA is the fact that the organization has never put an emphasis on location, as Weehawken is an arts program not a place. Classrooms are rented not owned, allowing the facilities and programs to be fluid, based on demand. Today, Weehawken programs are actively offered in Ridgway, Ouray, Silverton and Montrose. In addition to traditional arts programs, classes include programming such as dance, theatre, Spanish, culinary arts, literary arts, youth mountain biking, karate, yoga and science exploration. While focused on adults in the beginning, today 70% of programming is geared towards youth. Over the years, Weehawken has grown to be the provider of many of the region’s favorite cultural events. The RTR grant will help fund the needs-based and nominated scholarships or work-trade hours for youth who wish to participate in programming, playing a major role in increasing and supporting accessibility of youth programs in the region.

OURAY - Voyager Youth Program

The Voyager Youth Program was founded in 1997 when a group of local parents saw there was little for kids to do when school was not in session. They collaborated to fill the gap with a small summer day camp. Over time, the organization has grown to include an after school program, a summer enrichment program, substance use prevention programs and a county-wide coalition of citizens that strengthen youth support systems. The after school and summer enrichment programs provide critical childcare for 5 to 12-year-olds. Voyager is currently the only licensed childcare center in rural Ouray County with a population just under 5,000. At the teen center, alternative activities like Adventure Wednesdays, and substance use prevention programs serve teens 12 and older. Voyager also facilitates the Ouray County Communities That Care coalition which identifies and implements youth

support strategies relevant the community. This proven and evidence-based process is grounded in positive youth development and engages youth and adults in collaborative problem solving.

Donations to the The Two Wheels For Change Campaign will benefit the Denver Post Community Foundation and a diverse mix of charitable organizations that provide cycling stewardship to those in need. We believe at Ride The Rockies that it is our responsibility as fellow cyclists to do our part in making cycling accessible to everyone, no matter what their life circumstances are. Change someone’s life in need with the gift of cycling.

Monies raised through the Two Wheels Campaign assist Ride The Rockies in supporting organizations such as the Adaptive Sports Center, Bicycle Colorado and a group of veterans that are on the tour. We are able to send an annual contribution to Bicycle Colorado in support of their advocacy efforts to ensure a safe environment for cyclist in Colorado. Additionally, we are able to provide complimentary entries to the participants of the Adaptive Sports Center and members of the armed forces so they can participate in Ride The Rockies every year.

Ride The Rockies is conducted on open roads with vehicular traffic present. These roads include both marked and unmarked hazards. Though we go to great lengths to make the tour as safe as possible, you are only as safe as you ride. Always remember that your safety is in your own hands, and ride by these rules:

• Ride as far to the right as possible. Only ride two abreast when the shoulder is wide enough

• Obey traffic laws, signs and signals. Failure to do so may result in traffic violation tickets

• All participants MUST wear an approved helmet with an emergency identification sticker (provided by RTR) adhered inside

• Bicycle trailers and child seats are not permitted

• Be predictable. Ride in a straight line• No headphones while riding• If you are inexperienced with drafting, do

not ride in pacelines

• Use hand signals to indicate left or right turns, slowing or stopping

• Never assume motorists see you or that you have the right-of-way

• Move completely off the road and shoulder when stopped and resting

• Warn fellow cyclists of road hazards• Only pass cyclists on their left. When

passing, warn cyclists by saying, “On your left”

• Cross railroad tracks at a right angle• Rearview mirrors are strongly

recommended• Do not cross the center line • Control your speed• Expect the unexpected; your first

responsibility is to be safe.• All Ride The Rockies support and safety

services are provided on the designated and marked route ONLY

Ride The Rockies reserves the right to terminate the registration of any participant disobeying rules. Fees will not be refunded, and those involved will be ineligible for future Tours.

If you see a problem, we encourage you to speak to the other cyclist in a courteous manner. If the problem continues please reach out to the Tour Director.
