The new variant is the XL Sport 4x2, while the XL Heavy Duty Special Edition 4x4 is being upgraded with more standard features. Both should be in Ford dealerships by July.

“Ranger has been designed and engineered in Australia, and our harsh

continent is an ideal place to develop, test and test again to ensure Ranger meets Ford’s Tough Done Smarter mantra,” said Andrew Birkic, President and CEO of Ford Australia and New Zealand.

“With the new XL Sport and 4x4 XL Heavy Duty Special Edition variants, we’re working hard to ensure that tradies and businesses all across the country have the right equipment and support to get on with the job.”

RANGER XL HEAVY DUTY SPECIAL EDITION 4X4 - $52,790 (+ ORCS)

Available exclusively as a dual cab chassis in Arctic White, with the 3.2-litre

five-cylinder turbodiesel engine and six-speed auto, the XL Heavy Duty Special Edition has previously been offered, but with some of its more desirable features split across different extra-cost option packs. In response to customer demand, these various features have now been standardised.

To the XL dual cab 4x4 base, Ford adds a number of factory-fitted extras, including a Genuine Ford steel bullbar which comes with an LED light bar as standard, as well as integral mounting points for auxiliary lights and a UHF antenna. This factory bar retains the XL’s AEB with Pedestrian Detection function.

New XL Sport 4x2 and updated XL Heavy Duty Special Edition 4x4 coming. XL and XLT grades also get upgrades.

FORD EXPANDS 2021 RANGER LINEUPNEWS

Ford are expanding their Ranger lineup with the imminent arrival of a new variant and an update of an existing variant, as well as improved safety tech on

the XLT and the option of the Bi-Turbo four-cylinder engine and ten-speed auto transmission for the XL 4x4 grade.

Steel bulbar includes LED light bar and has no impact on AEB function.

Previous bare metal 17-inch wheels are now finished in black.

Black tubliner and sports bar are standard on the new Ranger XL Sport 4x2.

A Genuine Ford snorkel is part of the new XL Heavy Duty Special Edition, too, along with black side steps and black 17x7.5-inch steel wheels with solid wheel nuts and Continental CrossContact All-Terrain tyres.

The heavy-duty suspension now comprises new and thicker springs with a revised spring rate and new dampers front and rear. Designed to improve the Ranger XL’s ride under heavy load, the new suspension package comes with specific tuning of the ABS and ESC to suit.

Completing the updated XL Heavy Duty Special Edition package is a rear-view camera kit.

RANGER XL SPORT 4X2 - $43,790 (+ ORCS)Based on the XL dual cab ute and offering

a claimed $4,500 in extra features over that grade, the new XL Sport 4x2 takes styling cues from the XLS Sport grade, but is almost $10,000 cheaper.

Black accent styling features throughout, including on the grille, side steps, rear bumper, sports bar and 16-inch alloy wheels. There’s also a black tubliner and Sport tailgate decal.

While five paint options are offered – Arctic White, True Red and extra-cost Shadow Black, Meteor Grey and Aluminium Metallic - drivetrain choice is limited to the 2.2-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder producing 118kW and 385Nm, paired with a six-speed auto and driving the rear wheels.

XL, XLT UPGRADESAlong with these new and updated

grades, there have some minor updates made to other grades within the Ranger family, specifically certain variants of the XL and XLT.

“Our 4x4 XL customers will have even more choice with the inclusion of our premium Bi-Turbo powertrain, while adding Adaptive Cruise Control as standard to XLT (was) a decision based on customer

feedback and Ford Australia’s desire to continually improve our product,” Birkic added. “These additions will make Ranger even more convenient for those who spend a lot of time on the road.”

The Ranger XLT now includes Adaptive Cruise Control as standard across all body styles and 4x2 and 4x4 variants. Previously part of an optional Tech Pack, standardising ACC on the Ranger XLT is designed to improve this grade’s safety, convenience and value, according to Ford. However, it’s unclear whether the standard ACC includes the Forward Collison Warning function it featured when it was optional.

On the Ranger XL grade, the 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo four-cylinder diesel is now available

as an option to the existing turbodiesel 2.2 four- and 3.2 five-cylinder engines on selected variants. Previously limited to the Ranger Raptor, the 2.0 Bi-Turbo is now filtering down to other grades, first on the XLT and now the XL. Combined exclusively with a ten-speed automatic transmission, this performance engine is only available with four-wheel drive and limited to the XL Super cab chassis, dual cab chassis and dual cab ute body styles.

The increased performance – 157kW and 500Nm – and reduced fuel consumption from the 2.0 Bi-Turbo come at the expense of reduced payload capacity, but braked towing capacity is unchanged at up to 3500kg (check with your Ford dealer for specific numbers).

Pricing for these model grade updates had not been revealed at time of writing.

The MY21 Ranger upgrades and new additions are due for roll-out from late June. See your Ford dealer for details.

2.0-litre Bi-Turbo diesel is now available on selected XL Ranger body styles.

XL-based Ranger Sport 4x2 is a new variant, offering the looks of the XLS Sport, without the extra cost of four-wheel drive and XLS-spec features.

In what could be a potential gamechanger for the off-road aftermarket industry, Ford Australia will collaborate with ARB, Australia’s largest manufacturer and distributor of 4x4 accessories, to offer ARB 4x4 accessories as factory options through Ford dealerships.

Announced on 3 May, the collaboration will see ARB 4x4 accessories for Everest

Tickets for the Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash music festival, an all-new event on the outback activities calendar, have sold out.

Inspired by the Big Red Bash at Birdsville, the Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash takes the same concept and transplants it to the Mundi Mundi Plains, north of Broken Hill.

The new event, scheduled for 19-21 August, will bring a stellar line-up of Australian rock legends to Broken Hill, including Paul Kelly, Ian Moss, John Williamson, Tim Finn, Kate

and Ranger vehicles offered as Ford Licensed Accessories from participating dealerships, covered by a Ford new vehicle warranty of up to five years.

What Ford are calling a “high-level collaboration” will come into effect in the second half of 2021, initially limited to Australia, with other global markets to follow.

Ceberano, Glenn Shorrock, Ross Wilson, Vika & Linda, Wendy Matthews, Shane Howard, Shannon Noll, Dragon, The Radiators, Chocolate Starfish, Mi-Sex, The Chantoozies, Bjorn Again, Mark Gable, and Steve Balbi.

In addition to the music line-up, the Mundi Mundi Bash will also feature a packed programme of outback activities – from a Nutbush City Limits World Record dance off attempt to comedy and outdoor film screenings, scenic helicopter flights, camel

“We are very proud to welcome ARB on-board as they are known globally and respected in the off-road community for their state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and stringent quality controls,” said Andrew Birkic, President and CEO of Ford Australia and New Zealand.

“A lot of our customers have told us they’d love to be able to access a wider range of quality off-road accessories through our Ford dealership network, and this collaboration will mean they can head off-road safely with access to a range of ARB accessories.”

ARB 4x4 Accessories available through Ford dealerships for the Ranger and Everest have been validated by Ford Australia engineers, with testing conducted at a number of locations, including the Ford Australia Proving Ground. With Ford’s and ARB’s engineering and product development teams located in Victoria, such a collaboration is easier.

“ARB is truly honoured to be working with Ford at a global level,” says Andrew Brown, Managing Director of ARB 4x4 Accessories. “This collaboration is a great testament to the progressive vision of Ford and ARB to deliver to customers highly capable off-road vehicles with a broad range of best-in-class accessories.”

While the full range of ARB accessories offered by Ford will be revealed closer to launch, winch-compatible bullbars, electric winches, driving lights and storage drawer systems are confirmed inclusions.

rides and charity initiatives, such as the ‘Mundi Mundi Undie Run’ fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

An all-ages and dog-friendly event, the Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash will be held on private land on the Mundi Mundi Plains, with the Barrier Ranges in the background.

Situated 35km north of Broken Hill and near the historic town of Silverton, the Mundi Mundi Plains is a rugged and remote location, but it is also easily accessed, with sealed roads leading right up to the event site – ensuring those looking for a unique outback camping or caravanning experience can attend without needing four-wheel drives.

Tickets went on sale on 23 March, with the full complement of 10,000 sold by 11 May.

“We were backing our gut that we were onto a good thing, but never in my wildest dreams did I anticipate that the first Mundi Mundi Bash would sell-out this quickly,” said Festival owner and Managing Director of the Outback Music Festival Group Greg Donovan.

“I am as relieved as I am ecstatic. It was a big call to jump into launching a new festival in these times, and I am so grateful to all those who have backed us – from our patrons to my family and event team, and the NSW Government.

“There has been very little to celebrate for those of us working in the music and events sector since COVID hit, so the whole team are really going to savor this moment.”

Hyundai has unveiled its Santa Cruz ute, a recreational monocoque chassis ute for the North American market.

We know that Hyundai Australia won’t be bringing it here anytime soon, and that’s likely on account of it being produced in the USA in left-hand drive only, for now. But that’s doesn’t mean Australia will miss out entirely…

As Hyundai and its sibling Kia have been telling us for a while now, there is apparently a dual-cab ute in the works that will sit on a ladder-frame chassis and bring competitive figures. In fact, a spokesperson for Hyundai

HYUNDAI’S SANTA CRUZ UTE REVEALEDIs this a preview of Hyundai’s Aussie dual-cab ute?

Australia told us: “As much as we can we’re trying to convince the head office that we need a certain type of pickup, that we need a certain type of powertrain, we need the vehicle to be competitive in all sorts of different ways and we’ve been putting submissions through to head office on what the vehicle needs to be for probably a decade.”

There have been some renders over the last few years on what it would look like. We were inspired by the Santa Fe and have not been the only one. But perhaps this Santa Cruz is a better indication of what might come.

For the real pickup, which will be produced in Alabama from June, the Santa Cruz draws styling inspiration from the new Tucson SUV upfront, using a full-width grille with distinctive daytime-running lights. At the rear, the Santa Cruz has horizontal T-shaped light clusters which are new to Hyundai. It also has SANTA CRUZ stamped into the metalwork on the tailgate.

There is a degree of ruggedness to it, too, and that fits in with the aspirational adventure lifestyle market that Hyundai is going for. It isn’t really a tough work truck, though the 2.0-litre petrol in turbo form

producing 205kW and 420Nm for a 2300kg braked towing capacity isn’t bad.

But an Aussie version will need to be (and likely will be) much different to compete against the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max et al. It will need a longer wheelbase, diesel motor – rumoured to be the 2.2-litre and perhaps the Genesis 3.0-litre diesel turbo six – plus a ladder-frame chassis with bigger, tougher rear tray. The question is will the styling be like this, with Tucson style front end and the new T-light rear with stamped nameplate across the back? It might be quite the package.

Land Rover’s new Defender has been judged the 2021 World Car Design of the Year, as part of the annual World Car Awards that recognise automotive excellence.

Highlighting new vehicles with innovation and style that push established boundaries, the World Car Design of the Year award is part of a broader competition that also includes World Performance Car, World Green Car, World Luxury and World Urban Car categories, as well as the overall World Car of the Year.

Cars eligible for the 2021 World Car

Ninety-five years ago, the first race car to bear the Maserati trident badge made its debut, when a Maserati Tipo26 won the 1926 Targa Florio with Alfieri Maserati at the wheel.

That panel consisted of seven highly respected world design experts, including Gernot Bracht (Germany – Pforzheim Design School), Ian Callum (United Kingdom – Director of Design, CALLUM, and formerly with Jaguar, Ford and Aston Martin), Gert Hildebrand (Germany – Owner Hildebrand-Design), Patrick le Quément (France - Designer and President

The panel was asked to first review each candidate, and then establish a short list of recommendations for the final vote. In addition to Defender, the short list included the Mazda MX-30, Honda e, Polestar 2 and Porsche 911 Turbo.

From this group, a 1 through 5 voting system determined the three finalists – Land Rover Defender, Mazda MX-30 and Honda e - which were announced on 30 March.

The final was held on 20 April, where the Defender was declared the ultimate winner, with 299 points, over the Honda e (239 points) and Mazda MX-30 (197 points).

Prof. Gerry McGovern OBE, Chief Creative Officer, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “New Defender is influenced by its past but is not constrained by it and we are delighted it has been honoured with this award.

“Our vision was to create a 21st century Defender by pushing the boundaries of engineering, technology and design while retaining its renowned DNA and off-road capability. The result is a compelling 4x4 that resonates with customers on an emotional level.”

This year’s win is the third for Land Rover in the design category, following awards for the Range Rover Velar in 2018 and Range Rover Evoque in 2012.

a “clear homage to the glorious victories of the past”.

The ‘F’ in the name refers to Fangio, who won his fifth and final F1 World Championship with Maserati in 1957, making a mark on F1 that endures to this day.

On the Levante, the F Tributo Special Edition offers no mechanical or chassis updates, instead presenting specific colours and finishes. Two exterior colour options are offered – Rosso Tributo and Azzurro Tributo (Tribute Red and Tribute Blue).

The red references Italy’s national racing colour, while the blue acknowledges one of the two colours identifying the City of Modena, Maserati’s historic home. Yellow, the other colour of the Modena flag, is used for detailing and also references the red-and-yellow livery of Fangio’s Maserati 250F F1 car.

On the Levante F Tributo, yellow features on the Levante’s 21-inch Anteo wheels and brake calipers, regardless of whether Rosso Tributo or Azzurro Tributo is selected.

Inside, black full-grain ‘Pieno Fiore’ leather trim is standard, available with either red or yellow contrast stitching.

Build numbers for the Levante F Tributo had not been revealed at time of writing, but Australia has been confirmed for the special edition, with deliveries expected from June.

After being discontinued in Australia six years ago and shelved even further back in some overseas markets, Mitsubishi’s Ralliart sub-brand is set to make a return.

Mitsubishi CEO, Takao Kato, confirmed Ralliart’s return as part of a presentation announcing the carmaker’s EOFY earnings.

“We have decided to relaunch the Ralliart

Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) have released initial details of the Dakar Rally route for 2022, which goes through some familiar towns and cities in Saudi Arabia, but is claimed to be 80 per cent different from this year’s route.

The 2021 Dakar started on the Red Sea coast at Jeddah, then ventured inland, taking in Riyadh, Ha’il and Sakaka before running back down the Red Sea coast to Jeddah, avoiding the Eastern Provinces and that area’s ‘Empty Quarter’ entirely.

For its third running in Saudi Arabia, next year’s route will spend almost the entire first week in the Eastern Province.

brand for customers in Mitsubishi Motors brand who want to add to Mitsubishi Motors-ness even more,” said Kato.

“For customers who wish to experience our Mitsubishi-ness, we will launch custom-made accessories for our model line-up as well as re-entering motorsport events around the world.”

That means lots and lots of sand, with a byproduct being that navigation will be more important than ever before.

From the Empty Quarter, the route heads to Riyadh, the Saudi capital, for the rest day, then south and west before finishing at Jeddah.

Returning to the Empty Quarter holds particular appeal for two-time Dakar winner, Joan ‘Nani’ Roma: “I’d love to delve deeper into the Empty Quarter; it’s a terrain that works really well with drivers like me. More sand, more dunes, more off-road driving, more proper cross-country rallying...I’m excited!”

Before it was shuttered, Ralliart enjoyed a long and successful history with Mitsubishi, being connected to the carmaker’s successful World Rally Championship campaigns initially, then the Dakar Rally, which resulted in 12 victories for the Pajero – the most of any single model.

To homologate the competition models for racing, various ‘Evolution’ production vehicles were built, including a Pajero Evolution that is now highly collectable.

As Kato indicated in his statement, the revival of Ralliart will see Mitsubishi return to racing in a factory capacity, presumably in the off-road arena, and bring a range of performance parts to market.

Specifics on where Mitsubishi will race and what parts will be offered are unclear at this stage, but it seems a Triton may be the first beneficiary of the revived programme, as the presentation included a rendering of a Triton wearing a specific body kit, striping and other details in addition to a Ralliart nameplate.

This year’s cars category winner and 14-time Dakar Champion, Stéphane Peterhansel, was a little more reserved: “If it’s sand we are looking for, we’re in luck, and it will be a nice route because it will be a good test of our ability to get through the sand challenges as well as off-road navigation.”

Full day-by-day details of the 2022 route have yet to be released, but it will comprise two loop stages and two marathon stages (where competitors must service and repair their own vehicles each evening), which ASO says will be run “the old-fashioned way”.

The 2022 Dakar will commence on 2 January in Ha’il, with the rest day on 8 January in Riyadh and conclusion on 14 January in Jeddah.

Niche electric crossover from Mazda with sweet style and packaging but low driving range will be in Australia this August from $65k. WORDS AND PHOTOS via PracticalMotoring.com.au

NEWS – MAZDA MX-30 ELECTRIC

Mazda has released the price and spec of its first-ever electric car, the

MX-30 E35 Astina.

This makes it one of the more expensive models for sale by the Japanese brand, though only 100 units are being offered.

The MX-30 E35 (E35 denoting it is the electric version, compared to the petrol M Hybrid) is up against the likes of the Hyundai Kona Electric and MG ZS EV, and to a lesser extent the hatchback Nissan Leaf. However, unlike all of those options, it offers the shortest electric driving range at a claimed 200km.

Its driving distance comes from a 35.5kWh lithium-ion battery which, as expected, is on the smaller side. However,

this makes it lighter and on a well-to-wheel calculation also better for the environment. Essentially, bigger batteries require more exotic minerals which currently are not friendly in the mining, production, and end-of-life phases of their life cycle.

The battery powers a front-mounted electric motor producing 107kW and 271Nm, which is good for a sub 10-second acceleration from a standing start and uses a single reduction speed transmission (‘a gearless system’). Recharging is via a standard 10amp house plug, 32amp

We’ve already tested the MX-30 in petrol/hybrid form, but the E35 Astina is a real halo model and is priced accordingly, with Mazda announcing that the fully-electric crossover costs $65,490 plus on-roads.
