2021 Closing Ceremonies

As I started writing this Commodore’sCorner, I noticed my fingers were unin-tentionally crossed. I thought about itfor a minute, laughed, and realized Ihave been doing this before each SYCregatta. Perhaps they have been stuckin that position but if it somehow works,we will have nice sailing conditions atour next event. Apparently, it workedfor Closing Regatta because the week-end was beautiful with great sailboatracing and a Flag Ceremony. After Sun-day’s races, members and guestsgathered on the front lawn where Com-modore Mann started the ceremony bydelivering the invocation. Jorinda Juniussang the National Anthem and USCGCaptain Will Watson spoke of the CoastGuard’s busy year. After I congratulatedSYC’s sailors for an outstanding 2021season, Reverend Dr. Jean Meade con-cluded the Flag Ceremony with aneloquent prayer.

As Commodore Wilson once said, ourClosing Regatta is a ceremony howeversailing continues throughout the year atSYC. That is so true because shortlyafter Closing Regatta, we had the LakePontchartrain Racing Circuit (LPRC).NOYC ran the first two races on thesouth shore on Friday then SYC startedthe distance race to Tammany YachtClub. On Sunday, TYC ran the finaltwo races for the twenty-nine boat fleet.It was a great three-day weekend forracing on Lake Pontchartrain.By mid-October, several SYC mem-

bers ventured up to Newport, Rhode

Island for the U.S. Sailing National Hallof Fame to see the late SYC memberGilbert Gray be inducted. Like I men-tioned in last month’s Commodore’sCorner, SYC now has Gilbert Gray andShelby Buddy Friedrichs in the SailingNational Hall of Fame. This is a greathonor for not only their families butSYC as well.

Our entertainment committee alwayskeeps us on our toes and October wasno exception. Last week we were vis-ited by Tucker Thompson who gave alively talk about the 36th America’sCup. Tucker had spectacular footagefrom the latest America’s Cup where theboats hit speeds up to 47 knots. Tuckercould make a paddleboard race excitingso just imagine that Thursday eveningin the east dining room. The room waspacked with members enjoying theAmerica’s Cup presentation and thenTucker moved on to the New YorkYacht Club Rolex Invitational Cup andSYC’s victory. The excitement in ourdining room was instantly elevated andyou could see the pride on our mem-bers’ faces. At the end of the videofootage, everyone in the room stood andcheered in SYC fashion. I don’t thinkTucker will encounter a more exhilarat-ing group while on his tour across thecountry with his America’s Cup presen-tation.I have been watching meteorologist

Temperatures are starting to drop, andthe Fall sailing season is starting to gearup! In no time we will be putting all ofour sailing equipment to bed for thewinter, but until then we have a jam-packed November with some of SYC’slargest sailing events. The schedulekicks off with the Southern Soiland Cupteam racing event, followed by theSugar Bowl Regatta, Great Oaks HighSchool Regatta, and close on its heelsthe USODA Optimist Midwinter Cham-pionship! A friendly reminder to ourdry storage tenants that this year is a“big” year for Midwinters so we will beasking all of our dry storage tenants toremove their boats by November 20thfor the duration of the event. All boatswill be permitted to return to the yardno earlier than November 30th. Wehave wrapped up our Harbor Miceclasses that had record attendance,thank you to all that registered andcame to the clinic. Please keep an eyeon your inbox as you will be receivingemails about our spring clinics over thenext few months. Green Fleet and Ad-

vanced Fleet Optimist clinics will con-tinue throughout the winter and into thespring starting December 11th. Seventh Annual Sporting Clays Tournament

This year will feature four person team events*. Team, indi-vidual, female, and youth awards are up forgrabs!The tournament is open to current SYC Members and their

extended family members. Youth ages 18 – 14**. This is a ter-rific opportunity to meet other members!Work on getting your crew together today! If you don’t have

Singing Waterfall Road Husser, LA. 70442. The location isabout one hour and 30 minutes away from SYC. Check-in atCovey Rise begins at 8:30am. Shooting will begin at 10:00am.If you need to reach Covey Rise for any reason their number is985-747-0310.The entry fee this year includes 100 shotgun shells (12 ga or

20 ga), 100 clay targets, hayride to course, trophies, prizes,SYC swag, and lunch after the tournament. The entry fee is$130. Make sure to bring your own shotgun, eye and ear pro-tection. No alcohol consumption before or during thetournament.Covey Rise has a limited number of golf carts for rent.

Please call their office to reserve carts (985) 747-0310. Ifshooting 20 gauge, please bring your own 7.5, 8 or 9 shotshells as Covey Rise is low on 20-gauge ammunition.If you wish to register please visit the SYC calendar or givethe receptionist a call at 504-288-4200.

This year we will be offering some opptional events!

There will be a dinner at Covey Rise for Friday 12/10 at7:00pm. Make sure to RSVP with Covey Rise at 985-747-0310***.

There is also a bass fishing tournament hosted at the CoveyRise Pond on Saturday, 12/11, at 3:00 pm. We will meet at thebar. The rules are simple, catch and release (but make sure totake a photo first), artificial lures, and barbless hooks.

* We will attempt to accommodate five person teams. SYC member, Gilbert T. Gray (June 1, 1902-July 27,1981) was inducted into the National Sailing Hall ofFame on Saturday October 16 in Newport, RI. His manysailing achievements were capped by his being awardedAmerica’s first gold medal in sailing at the 1932Olympics held in Los Angeles, CA with crew AndrewLibano sailing a Star class boat. Seven countries com-peted including Great Britain, Sweden, The Netherlands,Canada, France, South Africa, and the United States.Gilbert’s award was accepted by his nephew David Vos-bien (center left) and John Charbonnet (center right) aformer crew member.

Gray got his start in the Star Class as crew for PrenticeEdrington, Jr. They won the Bacardi Cup for the South-ern Yacht Club in 1927 in Havana, Cuba racing theirboat, Sparkler II. That winter Sir Thomas Lipton, famousfor challenging for the America’s Cup, donated an elabo-rate silver trophy to the Southern Yacht Club. Edringtonand Gray were awarded the trophy for winning the 1928Star World Championship in Los Angeles in a new Starboat named Sparkler III. A fleet of 17 boats competed.The second place finisher (by one point) was 21-year-oldArthur Knapp, Jr. (2019 National Sailing Hall of FameInductee) who would later win the America’s Cup aboardRanger in 1937 and win the Star Worlds in 1930.In addition to David Vosbien and John Charbonnet,

Looking back at last year shows how far we havecome back to normal. Last year we had to do thedrive through pumpkin contest, had Hurricane Zeta,but we were able to have Thanksgiving. ThisThanksgiving chef is looking forward to putting outa signature buffet. Two seatings will be offered formembers and a third for the families in town for theOpti Midwinter regatta. In addition to Thanksgiv-ing, we are ready for all of our fall and holidayactivitiesEven though we are still very short staffed, this pastmonth we brough back a la carte dining and I be-lieve many members are enjoying our new menu.Chef has more to add when we are able to hire morestaff.Thank you to all those members that responded

and contributed to our annual employee Christmasfund. The generosity of our membership, especiallyin a year like we have had this year, is heartfelt.
