RECOGNITION OF GRADUATES

Graduates with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 to 3.69 will be announced as “graduating with honors.”

Graduates with a cumulative grade point average of 3.7 to 4.0 will be announced as “graduating with highest honors.”

Phi Theta Kappa MemberPhi Theta Kappa is a national honor fraternity for community college men and women, recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges. Its purpose is the promotion of scholarship, the development of leadership and service and the cultivation of fellowship among the students of the community colleges of the United States. Initiates are selected on the basis of scholastic rank (having completed at least one term of community college work), and must be judged of good moral character and possess good citizenship qualities.

SPARKAll Barton students are eligible for membership in Barton’s Community Student Organization (CSO) and SPARK. Both organizations joined together this year to meet the goals of each organization. CSO focuses on community service and developing relationships between Barton’s diverse students along with developing leadership skills. Barton’s SPARK goals include growing entrepreneurial spirit and increasing knowledge in the business area along with leadership. Students earning the cords for these organizations have met community service and activity requirements. This is the first year this membership has been recognized.

ACADEMIC REGALIA

Since the regalia used in colleges and universities for academic occasions may not always be understood by visitors to a campus, the following information will explain the items of apparel. Everyone possessing a college degree is entitled to wear a black robe on appropriate occasions. Faculty members wear hoods in addition to the gown. Hoods are generally black, trimmed in velvet in the color of the subject field, and are lined with the colors of the college or university conferring the degree. The correct colors to denote various branches of learning have been established by the Intercollegiate Code.

2021 OUTSTANDING GRADUATE AWARDS

Faculty and staff submit nominations for the Outstanding Graduate Award based on leadership skills, active participation on campus, community involvement and excellence in academics. A committee of faculty, staff, and students selected the 2021 Barton County Campus Outstanding Graduates from the nominees.

Elvia Alejandra Salazar Beck

Elvia Alejandra Salazar Beck grew up in Baumholder, Germany and has resided in Great Bend while attending Barton’s nursing program. Elvia is the daughter of Yadira and Leonardo Salazar of El Paso, Texas, and is married to Christopher Beck. While attending Barton, Elvia has served as President of the Barton Nursing Club, Co-Community Service Chair for Barton’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, and a member of Barton’s non-traditional student honor society, Alpha Sigma Lambda. Elvia began her educational journey with Barton at our Fort Riley campus, where she also served as a volunteer tutor for English as a Second Language (ESL) students. While attending school, Elvia worked as a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) and eventually as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at the University of Kansas Health System-Great Bend Campus and at QS Nurses. Elvia’s future plans are to work as a registered nurse in a Nurse Residency Program while continuing her education in pursuit of her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Her eventual career goal is to serve as an operating room nurse.

Kaitlynn Dyke

Kaitlynn Dyke of Cimarron, Kansas is the daughter of Keri and Donald Dyke of Cimarron. While attending Barton, Kaitlynn has participated in Barton’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society as well as Community Student Organization/SPARK. She has served as a Student Ambassador with the Admissions Department, a student athletic trainer, and has brought joy near and far taking on the alter ego of Bart the mascot for college activities and campus special events. Kaitlynn will transfer to Kansas State University this fall, where she will work toward her Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training. Her longer term educational goals include earning a Master’s Degree in Athletic Training as well.
