President’s Welcome It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you all to the 18th Annual Life Saving Victoria Awards of Excellence. This event allows us to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our dedicated and hard-working volunteers, staff and members of the broader aquatic community.

Life Saving Victoria’s members, from those out on the beach, working tirelessly behind the scenes, providing valuable training and those in the wider aquatic, fitness and recreation industry, are the backbone of our organisation and ensure we continue our mission of preventing aquatic related death and injury.

This past season, more than ever, has seen our members rise to the challenge, dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent restrictions and lockdowns that have come with it. The response from our volunteer lifesavers and lifeguards has been fantastic. They performed 612 rescues, attended 650 major first aid incidents and 5,977 minor first aid incidents, and undertook 233,700 preventative actions, to help keep approximately 3.7 million visitors to Victorian patrolled beaches safe. This highlights the quality of training and education that is provided to Life Saving Victoria’s 38,809 volunteer members.

The 2020/21 summer season also saw over 4,000 participants compete across junior, youth/senior and masters carnivals, supported by hundreds of volunteer officials, team managers, coaches, water safety and powercraft personnel. As we move forward, I am confident that the future of lifesaving in Victoria is in strong hands. During the last season year, 10,565 nippers received education in water safety and lifesaving skills. In addition, 1,413 volunteers took advantage of 35 member development programs offered by Life Saving Victoria.

During the past year, while numbers overall were reduced due to restrictions, many students learnt to swim through our 130 Swim and Survive providers, nearly 13,000 students from 96 schools participated in LSV education programs and nearly 30,000 candidates participated in LSV training courses, including those delivered by licensees and services members.Together, we provide an essential community service, and the contribution made by all our members is immense. I would personally like to thank and congratulate everyone in the organisation for their continued involvement and ongoing commitment to keeping our many beaches, pools and waterways safe year-round.

The Awards of Excellence recognise those who have gone above and beyond for lifesaving and water safety in Victoria. I would like to congratulate each of our 2021 award nominees for their efforts, as well as the support provided by their family, friends and work colleagues, which makes their lifesaving commitments possible.

We could not keep our aquatic environments safe and undertake the vital work we do without the support of the Victorian Government, and I would like to acknowledge and thank them for their contribution to lifesaving in Victoria, and their commitment to our future initiatives.I would also like to thank our major partners for this event, namely Westpac, Microflite, Marsh and Brande. In addition, Ampol, Isuzu, DHL and Westpac are national sponsors of Surf Life Saving Australia, and we are thrilled that they are on board locally to celebrate the achievements at a state level.

Finally, I would like to thank the members of our Awards of Excellence and Honours and Awards committees who work tirelessly to make this event possible. Thank you for joining us for this very special occasion, as we reflect on the last year, and also look forward to the year ahead.

Yours in lifesaving,Paul James ASM
