At the YMCA of Montclair, our camps offer children and teens — ages 2 to 15— a safe, exciting and memory-making experience.

Camp, like many Y programs, is about learning skills, developing character and making friends. But few environments are as special as camp, where kids become a community as they learn both how to be more independent and how to contribute to a group as they engage in physical, social and educational activities.

Our camps teach self-reliance and the development of attitudes and practices that build character and leadership, amidst the fun of sports, art, games, outdoor adventure, water activities and meaningful relationships.

YMCA of Montclair counselors are dedicated to making sure camp is an amazing experience for every camper.

Financial assistance is available for those with limited financial resources who desire to send kids to our camps. To be eligible, campers must reside within our service area: Bloomfield, Bloomingdale, Clifton, Cedar Grove, Glen Ridge, Haskell, Montclair, Verona and West Milford.

HELP SEND A CHILD TO CAMPCamping with the Y is a time for discovery, fun, and friendship. Help cover the cost of camp for a young adventurer. Your gift will provide an unforgettable summer experience at one of our Y camps. Any dollar amount given helps children develop core values, learn new skills, make new friends, and have loads of fun in the process!

If you are interested in making a pledge, please state dollar amount in the SEND A CHILD TO CAMP box on the registration form. Your contribution is tax-deductible.

Kids like to make new friends at camp and over the years we have found that these friendships grow throughout the year. However, if you feel your child would not thrive in a new setting (e.g., an extremely shy child) we will TRY to accommodate a friend request. Please note that you may only request one friend who is no more than six months apart in age and who is registered for the same session. Any friend request must be reciprocal on the friend’s registration.

CAMP AT THE LAKE SPECIALTY CAMPSThese camps are held at the same location as Traditional Camp and campers travel on their regular bus. Specialty Camps are designed to provide an intense exposure to one program area and are a great way for our 8-13 year old campers to add even more variety to their summer experience. It is very important that campers have a passion and strong desire to explore this program area. All Specialty Campers have swim lessons and participate in Special Event Fridays.

Lake Swimming and Fun Water ActivitiesYour summer camp experience wouldn’t be complete without taking a dip in our beautiful freshwater lake. Campers get to cool off by enjoying lots of lake time. Water safety is the Y’s #1 priority, so campers are scheduled for swim lessons Monday through Thursday, with free swim on Friday. Our American Red Cross Certified Lifeguards test every camper’s swim ability before they hop in the lake, placing them at the correct swim level. Our group lessons are inspired by the National YMCA Progressive Swim Lesson Program. Our lake is the ‘central hub’ of the excitement, action, and learning. Kayaks, canoes, pedal boats, and paddle boards are campers’ favorites, with ‘walking on water’ on the much loved aqua-mat being the biggest hit. Spending time in and around our lake adds great value, and helps build confidence and life skills in campers, one splash at a time!

TRADITIONAL DAY CAMPExperience everything we have to offer by signing up for one or more of our weekly sessions. Because of our themes, every week at Traditional Camp is completely different, so join us for the entire summer!

Campers are grouped as follows:

MIDDLE VILLAGE Ages 8-10Entering 3rd-5th Grade

JUNIOR VILLAGE Ages 6 & 7Entering 1st-2nd Grade

Projects may include sketching, watercolors or paints, nature collages, charcoal, clay, and much more. Campers will create masterpieces to take home and enjoy!

ACTION MOVIE AND LEGO FLIX Session 2 Adventure awaits you in these high intensity movies, where you’ll use a green screen, camera tricks, & special effects to create your own live-action movie. You’ll collaborate to write, act, & direct in this stunt packed movie where you’ll be taught action choreography to thrill the audience. Then in the afternoon you will bring Lego worlds to life! We provide the Legos. You provide your imagination. Work in groups to create a Lego set with Lego characters for a stop-motion movie you’ll storyboard, shoot, and add voice-overs too. ** Flix emailed a month after the program ends.

PERFORMING ARTS Session 4-5 Join the cast or crew and take the stage to get your creativity and imagination rolling! Hilarious drama games, story development, character building, costume, and set design are explored while preparing for Friday’s live show in front of the entire camp! Parents are welcome to attend the Friday performance on July 31.

NOTE ABOUT 2-WEEK ENROLLMENT: In order for your thespian camper to truly learn and hone his/her acting skills, Performing Arts camp will last two weeks.

DYNAMITE DANCE Session 7For children who love to dance and ‘bust a move’! Campers use their expressive nature and physical energy in this camp. Dance instructors give daily warm-ups and lessons incorporating great music. Campers also improvise their own dances using time, space, energy, body, and rhythm. The week ends with a mini-recital to entertain the entire camp community —parents are welcome.

Sports CampsSPORTS MANIA Session 1, 4 If you love to play and want to try a variety of sports, then this is your chance. ULTIMATE FRISBEE Session 5 Ultimate is an exciting non-contact team sport which mixes the non-stop movement and athletic endurance of soccer with the aerial passing skills of football. Ultimate is governed by Spirit of the Game™, a tradition of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the players rather than referees. Meet new friends and learn the basic skills of Ultimate Frisbee in this program designed for players of all skill levels.

REACHING NEW GOALS

YOUTH BASKETBALL ALL-STARS (Y.B.A.)Ages 8-13

The YMCA invented the game of basketball! The YMCA of Montclair invented Y.B.A. to nurture basketball enthusiasts. We provide all day programming for campers to further develop skills, learn game strategies, and achieve goals on and off the court. Each day is spent improving fundamentals, performing interactive drills, building offensive and defensive skills, playing in-house tournaments, and getting in shape. Campers may register for as many weeks of the program as they like-however note-each week fills up quickly. This camp is also a great option for youth who wish to try out for our travel team in the Fall.

My daughter loved her four weeks in YBA. Her confidence on and off the courts was impressive.

VOYAGERSAges 12-14

Campers have an opportunity to turn off technology and experience their community and beyond. Each week campers spend 2 days 'in house' participating in hands on activities, swimming at the Y, leadership skills building and giving back to the community. The remaining three days are spent on trips —near and far. Our website will post our confirmed trip schedule in May. Kindly note that some trips are subject to change based on the weather.

MOTIVATED BY ADVENTURE

I tried one week of Voyagers and loved it. My parents signed me up for four more weeks. I made new friends and had a great time on the trips. I can’t wait for this summer to do it all over again-maybe all six weeks!

SUMMER QUESTAges 14-15

Quest is a win-win for teens and parents alike! This camp provides a four-week long opportunity for campers to gain a foundation that leads to confidence, leadership skills and tools that are necessary for life and the workforce. After two weeks of hands-on learning, the teens get to put their newly acquired skills to the test by interning for the remaining two weeks in either one of our other camps or within the Y. They receive ongoing supervision, role-modeling, and feedback. Please note this is not a camp to attend more than once unless suggested by the camp staff.

PREPARING FOR SUCCESS

I learned so much in class, but I was still nervous on my first day of my internship. After the 2nd day, I knew what to do. Everyone was so helpful, and I felt like I had a lot to offer.
