SALGEBRA II 1.0 CREDIT

Grades: 10-12 Tuition: $820.00

This course studies the algebraic procedures used in coordinate geometry and analytic trigonometry. Emphasis is placed on the structure and methods of algebra and on general concepts such as the linear system, complex number system, functions. Connections are made between mathematics and the real world through many application problems. The use of the graphing calculator is integrated throughout the course.

ECONOMICS | US GOVERNMENT 1.0 CREDIT

Grades: 11-12 Tuition: $820.00

This course combines two courses, Economics and US Government.

Economics introduces students to the principles of economics. Students study the basic problem of resource scarcity and how each society deals with it. Topics include supply and demand, production factors, marketing, labor, role of government, money and banking, a study of Hawaii’s economy and its role in global economics.

US Government will focus on political theory, the foundations of American democratic institutions and the criminal justice system. Specific topics of study include the federal system, Constitutional law, civil rights and liberties.

GEOMETRY 1.0 CREDIT

Grades: 9-12 Tuition: $820.00

This course is designed to acquaint the student with the geometric properties in mathematics necessary for further work in the field. The student will read, analyze, and solve right triangle and trigonometric functions within contextual situations; develop area formulas necessary for determining volumes of rotational solids, solids with known cross sections, and area beneath a curve; and explain work clearly so that the reasoning process can be followed throughout the solution.

HAWAIIAN HISTORY 1.0 CREDIT

Grades: 9-12 Tuition: $820.00

This course provides in-depth study of the history and culture of the Hawaiian people, with focus on their past, present, and future as it shaped their individual and collective realities. Content scope ranges from the pre-western contact civilizations, the monarchy of Hawai’i, to the current issues of Hawai’i. Included are units on the political, economic, and social history of Hawai‘i.

SStudents will develop an understanding of the basic social and historical concepts shaping current issues.

JAPANESE LANGUAGE I 1.0 CREDIT

Grades: 9-12 Tuition: $820.00

This is a special 6-week program offered to students seeking either credit recovery in Japanese I or skills strengthening prior to enrolling in Japanese II. The focus on communication skills and Japanese for daily life – including traditional and pop culture – intends to provide an engaging means to acquiring skills in Japanese language. An assessment on the first day will provide information to course instructor on individual levels of proficiency to focus instruction and activities accordingly.

KINESIOLOGY 1.0 CREDIT

Grades: 11-12 Tuition: $820.00

This course introduces students to the study of human movement and the acute and chronic effects of physical activity and training on the body. Course content shall include basic anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and motor development. Emphasis will be placed on the recognition and management of common musculoskeletal injuries.

US HISTORY 1.0 CREDIT

Grades: 11-12 Tuition: $820.00

US History is a standard survey course of the important events, people, places and ideals of American History. The course will challenge students to recognize the complexity of human existence and the reality of human diversity, both within the nation and in a globalized society. Students will be encouraged to make connections between the events of the past, the contemporary world and themselves in order to define their own place in our American society.

WORLD HISTORY 1.0 CREDIT

This course covers the intellectual, cultural, political, diplomatic, social and economic history of Europe, Asia and the Americas. Students examine significant events in world history in order to gain a clear understanding of our world at the present time. The course encompasses the period from the Renaissance though the World Wars and continues into major movements to

PAMANA NG LAHI: WORKSHOP ON PHILIPPINE LANGUAGE & CULTURE 0.5 CREDIT

Dates: June 1-19 Grades: 9-12 Tuition: $410.00

Pamana is the Filipino word for heritage; lahi means race or people. Pamana ng lahi speaks of the things that our ancestors bequeath to us—their language, ancient knowledge, and cultural traditions. This is a 3-week workshop that consists of 15 2-hour modules. It aims to underscore the value of traditional knowledge, discuss aspects of Philippine culture and folklore, teach introductory Filipino (Tagalog) and hone critical thinking skills. The workshop includes interactive and creative activities using stories from folklore and bilingual multimedia materials. Students will gain a general introduction to Philippine history, language and culture from a team of University of Hawai‘i instructors.

Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive environment. An experienced instructor will challenge new and returning students to engineer at the next level. SDRIVER’S EDUCATION PROGRAM

This course provides a comprehensive education of safe, effective, and practical driving. It will cover Hawai‘i’s driver education requirement for teens which is 30 hours of classroom and 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction. Enrollment is open to all students with or without a permit, though the permit would be needed for the behind the wheel lessons of the program, which will follow the classroom portion.

Students will need to provide their own instruments (Current SLS students please inquire with Mr. Noborikawa)

The Summer Band Program is a month-long summer course designed for students who have completed at least one year’s worth of band class. Students will continue to develop their skills on their instrument and explore different types of music to perform.

SUMMER ORCHESTRA PROGRAM

June 1 – June 26 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Tuition: $300

Pre-requisite: Previous Orchestra experience preferred

Instruments will be provided to students

The Summer Orchestra Program is a month-long summer course designed for students who have completed at least one semester’s worth of Orchestra class. Students will continue to develop their skills on their instrument and explore different types of music to perform.

THEATRE ARTS ENRICHMENT

The Theatre Arts Enrichment program will teach the fundamentals of theatre vocabulary and etiquette through games, instruction, and theatrical direction. At the end of the six week program, students will present their musical production for family and friends.

SUMMER PROGRAM INFORMATION

HOW TO REGISTER

A completed 2020 Summer School Registration Form and full tuition payment by check or credit card must be submitted to the Summer Program Director, Bertram Hall 2nd Floor – Main Office.

Please complete a separate registration form for each student.

Forms may be completed online at saintlouishawaii.org/summer.

Additional forms are available in the Bertram Hall 2nd floor – Main Office (photocopies of the form will be accepted). Students should register for classes according to the grade level that they will enter in Fall 2020.

Any out-of-state/country student must provide a current TB clearance (from a U.S. doctor) before the first day of summer school. The student will not be permitted to attend summer school without the proper medical clearance.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE

The deadline for registration to the Saint Louis School Summer Program is April 14, 2020. Students who register after April 14, 2020 will be charged a $50.00 late registration fee. Notification of enrollment will be mailed home by May 1, 2020.

REGISTRATION CHANGES | CANCELLATIONS | WITHDRAWALS

Registration is on a first come, first served basis. Saint Louis School reserves the right to cancel a course due to low enrollment. Students who withdraw from classes after April 14, 2020 will be assessed $200.00 fee per course. NO TUITION REFUND will be given for withdrawal after Tuesday, April 14, 2020, unless the course is cancelled by the Summer Program Director.

Any registration changes after May 1, 2020 will incur a $50.00 fee. The fee may only be waived if changes are initiated by Saint Louis School faculty, staff, or Summer Program Director.

CLASSROOM MATERIALS | TEXTBOOKS

Students enrolled in academic courses will need to report to class with the basic school supplies, such as: pens, pencils, paper, and a folder. Some courses may require additional supplies, to be noted on a supply list provided on the first day of the program.

GRADE REPORTS | REPORT CARDS

Progress reports (for credit courses) will be sent home every two weeks. Report cards will be mailed after the end of the Summer Program. Parents of non-Saint Louis School students are responsible for forwarding a copy of the report card to their child’s school.

BREAK TIME | FOOD SERVICE

Break time will be from 10:00 am – 10:30 am every day. Students are not allowed to leave campus during break time. Snack bar service will be available during break time only – food selections may be limited. If students are enrolled in a morning and afternoon session, please provide a home lunch, snacks, and a beverage for your child, as no lunch service will be provided.

STANDARDS OF STUDENT BEHAVIOR

Saint Louis seeks to educate the whole person – spiritually, academically, socially, and morally – in a Catholic Marianist framework. Disciplined behavior and mutual respect form the foundation for academic achievement and moral development.

SERIOUS CODE VIOLATIONS

A violation of any of the following will be referred immediately to the Summer Program Director. Following a review, appropriate disciplinary actions will be administered. Illegal activities of any type will not be tolerated and may result in immediate expulsion and police intervention.

THE FOLLOWING ARE PROHIBITED AT ALL TIMES:

• Weapons Theft Threats/Assaults • Fighting/Battery Insubordination Improper Language/Gestures • Physical Harassment Sexual Harassment Verbal Harassment • Personal Displays of Affection• Visual Harassment Vandalism/Graffiti • Gambling • Cheating Computer Tampering • Tobacco, Electronic Cigarettes, Smokeless Tobacco and other Contraband

OTHER CODE VIOLATIONS

Any activity or possession of an item that could be deemed as a safety hazard or administrative concern (associated items will be confiscated for parent pick up), unless explicitly cleared by administration in advance, and actively supervised by a staff member.

Examples include:

Over-the–counter (OTC) medications/supplements must be reported immediately to any Administrator while on campus or at any school activity or event. This includes any dietary supplement in tablet, pill, powder, or capsule form (vitamins, minerals, etc.). Approved prescription medication brought to school must be stored with Administration or in a secure location approved by the Summer School Program Director. OTC medication is allowed ONLY with Administration approval upon receipt of a doctor’s written authorization.

DRUG-FREE SCHOOL STATEMENT

A student is never to use, sell, provide, offer to trade, transport or transmit any substance, or participate in any activity, relating to illegal drugs, prescription drugs, alcohol, or tobacco or to be in possession of any item deemed as drug paraphernalia including vapor or e-cigarettes while on campus or at any school function or event, or en route to and from school or any school event. Teachers/staff/supervisors that confiscate any aforementioned substances and paraphernalia, as well as any found items of this nature should be reported to the School Principal or to the nearest appropriate school personnel.

STUDENT DRESS CODE

BOYS

Boys may wear long trousers or walking shorts; aloha, dress, or knit shirts with collars; and dress, leisure, or athletic shoes with socks. Sandals, slides, and slippers, as well as board shorts and athletic shorts are NOT permitted.

Unauthorized attire includes: jeans; trousers/shorts without belt loops; all tank tops and t-shirts; any article of clothing with inappropriate images or language; any/all headgear; earrings and facial jewelry/ornaments/piercings; non-prescription glasses.

Boys must keep the back of their hair from touching the top of their shirt collar and covering their ears. Sideburns cannot pass below earlobes. NO FACIAL HAIR; shave daily, if necessary. Hair in its natural state is not to be longer than 3 inches in length, nor is it to be dyed, tracked, braided, nor unevenly shaved.

Clothing must be in good repair with no holes, tears, rips. Distressed styles are not allowed.

GIRLS

Girls may wear dresses, skirts, blouses, muumuus, dress slacks, or pant suits. When standing up straight, the bottom hem of pants/skirts should extend at or below the knees. Avoid extremes in dress, hairstyles, and makeup. No distracting hairstyles or hair coloring.

Unauthorized attire includes: shorts, jeans, backless or bare midriff apparel; all tank tops and t-shirts; any article of clothing with inappropriate images or language; see-through blouses, halters, tube tops, or tops with spaghetti straps; any/all headgear.

ABSENCES | TARDIES

Punctuality and regular attendance are required for summer school. If a student will be absent or tardy, parent/guardian must call the Summer Program Office at 808-739-7777 by 7:45 a.m. Students who arrive late are to report directly to their classroom.

For high school credit courses, a student who is absent for more than three (3) days of summer school, we recieve NO credit for the course. Unexcused and excused absences will be counted toward the total days absent. Two (2) tardies may be counted as one (1) absence.

FOR HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT COURSES:

Accumulating more than three (3) absences – excused or unexcused – will result in forfeiture of credit and failure of the course.
