GE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As trapshooters and gun owners, I am sure that we have done all we can do politically at this point. We have voted appropriately and signed all the pro-gun petitions that came our way. Let’s clear our mind of all the unsavory political attacks on the legal shooting community, as we have done all we can for now.

We are at the start of a wonderful new season of trapshooting. In Manitoba alone, we have 18 days of ATA tournaments, 3 days of international trap tournament and a special tournament day reserved for juniors alone. Those 22 tournament days are due to the hard work of the directors and volunteers at the trap clubs that are spread across our province. The Canadian National ATA Trapshooting Tournament is in Edmonton this year, for 5 more days of fun-filled shooting. Also, for those who like to travel, the World Trapshooting Championships, open to any trapshooter, at any level, is in Sparta, Illinois. This is an 11-day tournament.

Let us enjoy a sport that throws more targets than all the other shotgun sports put together and is the fastest growing shooting sport among North American high school students.

It is said that, for the trapshooter, the definition of true love is the feel of recoil and the smell of gunpowder. Good Shooting, Harry Humby MTA President

SAFETY ETIQUETTE

The practice of tracking targets behind a shooting squad is unsafe, disconcerting to the shooters and is not permitted.

All guns must have the action opened and contain no live or empty shells at any time, except while the shooter is on the firing line. A break open gun may be closed when it is in the gun rack but it shall not contain a live or empty shell. A gun other than a break open must have the action open when it is in the gun rack and it shall not contain a live or empty shell.

A shooter may place a live shell in his gun only when on a post facing the traps. In singles or handicap a shooter may place only one shell at a time in his gun. In doubles a contestant may place two shells at a time in his gun. All live and empty shells must be removed from the gun before moving from one post to another. In changing from one post to another, the shooter will not walk in front of the other shooters.

A shooter must not in any manner interfere with the preceding shooter by raising his/her gun to point or otherwise create an observable distraction.

Shooters are not permitted to shoot while seated in or otherwise using a golf cart on the firing line. Single passenger conveyances are the appropriate means for participating should one require assistance due to permanent or temporary disability.

All guns must be equipped, fitted and used so as not to eject empty shells in a manner that substantially disturbs or interferes with other contestants.

If a flag, orange pylon or stop sign appears on the trap house, immediately unload your gun and wait until it is removed, indicating ready.

Do not point your gun in the direction of any person even though they know the gun is not loaded.

Each shooter must have his/her own gun while on the firing line. The practice of sharing a gun on the firing line is dangerous and will not be allowed.

Protective shooting glasses and ear protection must be worn.

All empty shells that hit the ground are the property of theClub.

Authorized club personnel will make all necessary adjustments to the trap machines.

The Gun Club has the right to refuse shooting privileges to any individual possessing faulty firearms and/or ammunition. The Gun Club has the right to expel any individual who, in the opinion of shoot management, disrupts the harmony of a tournament. The Gun club assumes no responsibility for injuries or damages resulting from the use of firearms or ammunition. RESPECT IN SPORT POLICY

1. The Manitoba Trapshooting Association Inc. is committed to creating a sport environment in which all individuals are treated with respect and dignity. Coaches have a responsibility to create a sporting environment that is free of harassment and abuse.

2. The Manitoba Trapshooting Association Inc. requires that all coaches participating in trapshooting have completed the online “Respect in Sport” as required by Sport Manitoba.

SCOPE AND APPLICATION

1. The policy applies to all coaches registered with, or named, on an official sport roster, or under the jurisdiction of the Manitoba Trapshooting Association Inc.

2. Any coach not having completed the program or maintained certified status in the timeframe established by the Manitoba Trapshooting Association Inc. may be removed as a coach until such time that the course is completed.

3. The Board of Directors of Manitoba Trapshooting Association Inc. is responsible for setting out the communication and timing of course completion and recertification.

ENFORCEMENT

Non-compliance of this policy may result in further discipline as determined by the Board of Directors or in accordance with Manitoba Trapshooting Association Inc. Policy.

TRAVEL FUNDING UPDATE

There have been a number of inquiries over the past couple of years as to funding for travel to trap shoots outside of Manitoba. The funding for all programs comes from Sport Manitoba. In order to get funding the M.T.A. board must submit a plan for how the funding will be spent a year in advance. All spending must fit into Sport Manitoba’s criteria to be approved.

Our programs provide for two levels of assistance: The first is from the M.T.A. and assists the Manitoba Provincial Champion of Singles, Handicap, and Doubles to train and attend Canadian and World Championship events. If the champion cannot attend then consideration will be given to runner-ups, class winners and possibly the 1st All Star Team. The amount available will depend on funds available and number of athletes requesting assistance. The funding is on the basis of the decision of the Board of Directors of the M.T.A. All athletes must complete and sign the athlete assistance form and submit it to the Secretary by September 1st of the current year.

The second level of funding is from Sport Manitoba. This funding is for Provincial Champions only, who attend either the Canadian or World Championships. Sport Manitoba requires that the athletes place in the top 10% or top 10 at the national or international championships. Some latitude is given in the case of Juniors and Sub-Juniors to attend other championships. Champions are asked to report scores & placing to the treasurer of the M.T.A. and will be sent a Sport Manitoba Form for completion. This form must be filled in and returned to the treasurer of the M.T.A. (to be signed) then forwarded to Sport Manitoba for consideration.

A shooter must be a member in good standing of the M.T.A. and be affiliated with a Club prior to a shooting event in which he/she could qualify for funding.

S All Ladies, Sub-Juniors, Junior, Veterans and Senior-Vets must declare their special category at the time of classification in any registered tournament if they wish to compete as a category shooter. Without such declaration, the contestant will not be allowed to compete for the applicable category trophy. No contestant will be allowed to declare or change a special declaration after firing his/her first shot. The only exception to the rule will be to correct an A.T.A. classification error. The following rules apply to shooters who declared a special category. At all tournaments where All American points will be awarded in any event, shooters must declare only one (1) category (i.e. Lady I, Lady II, Sub-Junior, Junior, Junior Gold, Sub Veteran, Veteran, or Senior

Veteran). Note:ChairShootersareexemptfromthisrule.

1. A female shooter, who has not reached her 55th Birthday, may declare Lady 1.2. A female shooter, who has reached her 55th birthday, may declare Lady II.3. A shooter who has not reached his/her 15th birthday may declare Sub- Junior.4. A shooter who is 15 but has not reached his/her 18th birthday may declare as a

Sub-Veteran.7. A shooter who is 65 but not reached hi/her 70th birthday may declare as a veteran.8. A shooter who is 70 years of age and older may declare as a Senior Veteran. This

rule does not supersede paragraph 7.9. Age based categories are established on the birthday of the shooter. For purposes

of determining age category for HOA and HAA awards, the category declared by the participant on the first day he/she shoots shall be used.

10. Shooters who become eligible for new age based categories during the target year may elect to continue to compete in the previous category for the remainder of that target year. (For example a shooter reaching age 70 may elect to continue to shoot as a Veteran for the remainder of the current target year.) However, once a shooter has elected to move to the new category that decision is irrevocable and he/she may not again declare eligibility for the previous category. Junior shooters reaching the age of 18 may continue to declare Junior category for the remainder of the current target year.

When there is no Sub-Junior trophy, Sub-Juniors will be included in the Junior Category. Senior veterans will be included in the Veteran category when there is no Senior Veteran trophy.

Where there is no Junior Gold or Sub Veteran trophy, these shooters will be included in the Open Class. Where there is no Lady II trophy, these shooters will be included in the Lady I category.

TAny person who wins one of these trophies while shooting at the Brandon Gun Club is still eligible for a club trophy in that event. All shooters are eligible for club trophies. All A.T.A. added money is awarded with the trophy, and ties for added money do not divide. The Brandon Gun Club trophy package is independent of the Central Zone trophy package.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTSTo assure equitable classification and handicapping, a specific number of targets must be shot in the prior two (2) years, combined with a certain minimum being shot in 2019, prior to the Central Zone shoot date.

Penalty Classes and Handicap YardagesThose not meeting the target requirements shall be assigned penalty class and yardage as follows:

Total In Minimum In Penalty Classification

2019/2020 2020Singles 800 400 Class AHandicap 800 400 See BelowDoubles 400 200 Class B

For Women and Sub-Juniors, the minimum shall be Class B singles and Class C doubles.

Note: Penalty yardage will be as follows: Your current A.T.A. assigned yardage plus a minimum of two (2) yards to a maximum of 27 yards. Penalty yardage will be waived for senior veterans. Earned yardage awarded will be based on number of shooters at each individual location, not as a total of all.

INFORMATION ON SPECIAL CATEGORIESIt is the shooters responsibility to make sure that allspecial categories (Lady 1, Lady 2, Sub-Junior, Junior, Junior Gold, Sub-Veterans, Veterans, and Senior Vets) are declared special category at the time of classification in any registered tournament if they wish to compete as a category shooter. Without such declaration, the contestant will not be allowed to compete for the applicable category trophy. No contestant will be allowed to declare or change a special category after firing his/her first shot. The only exception to this rule will be to correct an A.T.A. classification error. The following rules apply to shooters who have declared a special category. At all tournaments where All-American points will be awarded in any event, shooters may declare only one (1) category. Note: Chair shooters are exempt from this rule.

Lady 1, Lady 2, Junior Gold, Junior, Sub-Junior, Sub-Veteran, Veteran, and Senior Veteran must be marked on all entry cards and the scoreboard. Shooters are responsible for seeing that this is done at both places. All around scores will be posted at the end of the shoot.

Ties: Shot off at the end of the day, or as otherwise announced. Absentees forfeit. Friday’s Class Singles and Class Doubles will be carried over to Saturday’s Singles and Sunday’s Doubles respectively.
