What is the SCSBOA?

We believe that aesthetic education through instrumental music performance is essential to

the school curriculum. Our mission is to provide educational leadership to the membership

of the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association. To fulfill our mission, we

provide opportunities for professional growth through developmental resources. These

resources include: conferences, clinics, publications, performance evaluation, association

with institutions of higher learning and interaction with professional musicians.

We provide enrichment opportunities which present outstanding student musicians as

models for all instrumental programs. We also provide resources to assist with the

development and/or evaluation of curriculum should it be requested by a school or district.

• SCSBOAsponsors band, orchestra, solo and ensemble, district and regional festivals.

• We select and train approved adjudicators for band, orchestra, solo and ensemble

festivals and for parade and field event competitions.

•SCSBOA maintains a continuing program to evaluate and update the adjudication forms

being used for band and orchestra festivals and competitions.

•We sponsor clinics and workshops for in-service training of teachers of instrumental

music.

•SCSBOAsponsors the SCSBOA High School Honor Groups, the SCSBOA Middle School

Honor Groups, the SCSBOA Elementary Honor Groups, and the SCSBOA Honor Jazz

Ensembles.

1937

1937…the first Social Security payments in the U.S. were issued; Daffy Duck made his debut; U.S. steel workers were given a raise

to $5 per day; NBC created the first full-size symphony orchestra for radio audiences; Joe Dimaggio hit his first grand slam.

America continued to reel from the effects of the Great Depression, and the Dust Bowls of the Great Plains forced thousands of

families to seek shelter and work far from their homesteads and families. Yet, on the cam- pus of Los Angeles Junior College,

fifteen music educators came together to create what would become the

premiere music organization in California, the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association. As a member

of the SCSBOA, you are a recipient of their dream!

The first honor band was created in 1937,made up of high school students from Southern California and within a year, solo and

ensemble festivals as well as band and orchestra festivals became the priority of the SCSBOA’s Board of Directors. Their vision

was clear: creating a viable list of music to be used for festival and sightreading; developing a qualified judging pool;

determining which grade levels would be eligible for festival participation. By the end of 1939, these visions were in fact

realities and again, the Board of Directors, along with a growing membership pushed forward with newgoals.

The Board of Directors introduced the first Southern California high school honor orchestra concert broadcast on nationwide

radio and a “Three-Month Plan” where elementary, junior high and high school music education was the focus, culminating

in a conference type meeting held every three months for specific grade levels. The Board of Directors continued to push

forward with new ideas and dreams never accepting that the job was complete.

While the marching band movement has gained tremendous popularity, festivals continue to grow as well. Major changes

to the by-laws have been instituted throughout the past eighty years. New scoring systems have been introduced and

coordinators hired to assist with the ever-growing needs of the SCSBOA. These changes have kept the SCSBOA in existence

for over eighty years. We keep growing and moving forward!

Little could the original fifteen gentlemen of the first SCSBOA have known that eighty one years later, music and its

educational components encompass far more than band and orchestra, drums and violins. From garage bands to

computerized and technologically oriented compositions, music and all its facets have evolved tremendously.

Yet, it’s not so much about the parades, field events or festivals, but more about the journey the SCSBOA continues to take

because of the vision. Each generation, Board of Directors and Music Educator brings a new energy and goals to those dreams

from 1937. That energy has made the SCSBOA the standard bearer not only in Southern California but nationwide. Be part of

the vision – you matter. Be part of the legacy of the Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association!

Greetings from President, Jeanne ChristensenWelcome to the Annual SCSBOA Professional Development Conference! Over the two-day conference, you will

have the opportunity to choose from 72 different session offerings. You will be able to listen to guest artists from

around the country, engage in meaningful dialogue with peers, and sit in and watch one of the many Honor Groups

rehearse by this year’s incredible conductors. I encourage you to attend one or more of the Honor Concerts with

close to 850 of Southern California’s best student musicians involved.

The SCSBOA Board of Directors has been planning this conference over the past several months. We are very

excited to bring you a thoughtful, meaningful, and educationally rich experience. The conference is designed for

the music educator first. Each hour you will find a session that will have you thinking about new ideas, sharing

what works in your classroom, and more. Our guest artists, conductors, and speakers will help provide a place

where like-minded educators can gather, where music education can be celebrated, and where we can talk to one

another and open up about the joys (and failures) of what we do. Let’s celebrate our strengths and continue to

grow as an Association and as professionals.

If this is your first conference, then welcome! If you are a veteran educator, welcome back! Either way, I challenge

you to go up to someone new and open a dialogue. It’s how we all build community and how we learn to

collaborate together.

SCSBOA believes in music education and the power of music. Thank you for your continued support of SCSBOA

and the performance opportunities you help us provide to thousands of students throughout Southern California.

Our Association is rich in tradition of bringing music education to the highest level of excellence. This year is no

exception.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, enjoy the conference!

Conductor, violinist, educator and scholar, Iman Khosrowpour has enjoyed a uniquely multi-faceted trajectory. In

2010 he began his conducting career as director of the Eutonic Music String Ensemble in Lake Forest, CA. In 2013

he became co-conductor of the Irvine Valley College (IVC) Symphony Orchestra and took full directorship of the

ensemble in 2014, annually leading them in several concerts as well with The Ill-Tempered Chamber Players, the

Baroque-sized ensemble he founded in 2013. In addition to the great symphonic literature of Mozart, Beethoven,

Schubert, Bruckner and other composers, the orchestra has given several world premieres of local composers and

IVC students. In 2016 Khosrowpour made his conducting debut at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall

with the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) High School Honors Orchestra.

A passionate educator, Khosrowpour has been in demand in the IUSD and surrounding school districts as an

orchestra clinician. His seminar on string pedagogy at the Southern California School Band and Orchestra

Association Conference in January 2019 was hugely successful, prompting a return invitation in 2020. He is a

member of the Conductors Guild and attended their workshop in New York City in January 2019, working with

John Koshak and Markand Thakar. Khosrowpour maintains a busy private violin/viola studio and teaches violin and

viola as well as music history at IVC, and has been on the faculty at Orange County School of the Arts.

His students have been members of the Irvine, All-Southern California and All-State Honors Orchestras, Orange

County School of the Arts, Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra and Orange County Youth Symphony, as well as

winners of regional and international competitions. As orchestral musicians they have performed at Segerstrom

Hall, Sydney Opera House and Carnegie Hall. In 2015 he founded the Irvine Music Festival, a world-class intensive

summer program for dedicated young musicians, now in partnership with Concordia University Irvine and debuting

as an international festival in summer 2019.

As a violinist Khosrowpour made his concerto debut as with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra under thebaton of Carl St. Clair at the age of sixteen. A recipient of the highly competitiveOrchestra Fellowship at Aspen Music Festival, he has played under the baton of maestros James Levine,David Zinman, Alan Gilbert, David Robertson and Hugh Wolf, and has performed for U.S. President BillClinton. Khosrowpour has given solo and chamber music concerts and masterclasses in Japan, Korea,Canada, Brazil, Czech Republic, Germany and throughout the United States. In 2013 Khosrowpour madehis European concert debut performing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the Czech VirtuosiOrchestra in Brno, Czech Republic. Committed to encouraging new music, in 2015 he gave the worldpremiere of the Daniel Luzko Violin Concerto in Asunción, Paraguay, and in 2017 he performed MozartViolin Concerto No. 5 with the Ensemble Wienklang at the Konzerthaus in Vienna, Austria.

Khosrowpour was born in Tehran, Iran and immigrated to the United States when he was two years old. He began violin studies at age of eleven and quickly displayed promise, only two years later becoming a pupil of the late Erick Friedman, prized pupil of Jascha Heifetz. During his violin studies at the Peabody Institute Khosrowpour took classes in orchestral conducting with Frederik Prausnitz and also participated as concertmaster for the Conductors Retreat at Medomak under Kenneth Keisler.

Khosrowpour graduated from the Peabody Institute, Rice University and New England Conservatory, and also has a Masters of Arts Degree in East Asian Studies from Harvard University.

Internationally recognized for his deep musicianship and passionate communication, Sameer Patel is one of America’s

most exciting young conductors.

In the 2019-2020 season, Sameer begins his role as the Artistic Director of the Hot Springs Music Festival and continues

as Associate Conductor of the Sun Valley Music Festival. He recently concluded an acclaimed tenure as Associate

Conductor of the San Diego Symphony, where he reinvigorated the orchestra's programming and connection with its

community. Abroad, he has conducted acclaimed performances with the

Orchestra Sinfonica di Sanremo, the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana, the Leipziger Sinfonieorchester, and others. With an

unending enthusiasm for understanding the music of our time, Sameer has curated programs and has championed music

by living composers such as Adam Schoenberg, Anna Clyne, Mason Bates, Ellen Reid, Hannah Lash, Tan Dun, and

others.

Sameer’s impressive work spans three continents and has led to recognition from the Solti Foundation U.S., which granted him three consecutive Career Assistance Awards and an Elizabeth Buccheri Opera Residency with North Carolina Opera. In 2016 he was recognized by Daniele Gatti as a top conductor at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Italy, which led to his acclaimed professional debut with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Sanremo.

In 2013, Kurt Masur, the late Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, recognized Sameer’s talents with a prizefrom the Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Foundation, which allowed him to study with and assist Maestro Masur in hisappearances with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. That same year, Sameer was one of only six conductors selected by the League of American Orchestras for the Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, which led to subsequent, multiple engagements with that orchestra. In

the early stages of his career he held conducting positions with the Chicago Sinfonietta and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic.

“I’ve been playing the original Z for a long time,

but after a busy day of playing the new 8310Z,

I was amazed. It speaks easily with little effort,

and fills the room with sound.

Thanks, Yamaha - a wonderful step forward!”
