Introduction to the Benefice and LEP

The Parishes and Faith communities of St Lawrence, Barlow, St Peter and St Paul, Old Brampton and Loundsley

Green Church each have their own distinct character. Each Church acknowledges its individual cherished styles

of worship, but seeks to work together to further the links and good relations between the churches and also within Chesterfield North Churches Group. Loundsley Green Church is a Local Ecumenical Partnership (LEP) of

the Anglican Church with the Methodist Church in the Sheffield District and Chesterfield Circuit.

The Diocese of Derby

The Diocese of Derby covers roughly the same area as the County of Derbyshire. Its diocesan bishop is the Bishop of Derby (Libby Lane). There are 255 Parishes in the Diocese and 330 churches. The Diocese is divided

up into 8 deaneries, 4 in each of Chesterfield and Derby Archdeaconries. The Archdeacon of Chesterfield is

Carol Coslett.

North East Derbyshire Deanery

The North East Derbyshire deanery is part of the Chesterfield Archdeaconry and is made up of 22 Benefices.

Although centred on the town of Chesterfield, the deanery extends far beyond the borough limits incorporating the Sheffield satellite town of Dronfield in the north to the famous mining town of Clay Cross in the south and

bordering Nottinghamshire to the East. Clergy meet for pastoral support in a monthly Chapter (excluding

August) which is chaired by the Area Dean, Canon Karen Hamblin.

The Loundsley Green LEP

The LEP is a shared partnership between the CofE and the Methodists with shared leadership between the

Anglican Incumbent and the Methodist Minister, Tracey Harris, who is also the Methodist Minister with oversight for Barlow & Cutthorpe Methodist Church.

There is also a retired priest, Jocelyn Lewis, with permission to officiate and her husband George who is a

Local Preacher and Reader. There is one other Local Preacher, and two retired clergy (representing each of

the two denominations) and 2 accredited Worship Leaders along with a strong active worship group.

Additional assistance The Joint Benefice has an Associate Priest, Janet Quick and a retired priest, Bernard Sproston, with

permission to officiate.

In addition, there is a recently qualified reader, Kate Brookbank who is licensed to all three parishes.

Parish needs The new Incumbent will be instituted as Rector of the Joint Benefice of St Peter and St Paul, Old Brampton and St Lawrence, Barlow and Priest in Charge1 of Loundsley Green Church. We are also part of the

Chesterfield North Churches group which is a group of church communities who seek to support one another

in mission and ministry and who worship together occasionally

Who we are… Our three churches are diverse and yet complementary in their locations, catchment areas and styles of

worship, and are keen to work even more closely together under your guidance, whilst retaining our individual parish identities. We’d like you to inspire us and to help us to increase our impact on the

communities we serve and to reach out to those whom, for whatever reason, are not currently attracted to

worship with us.

What we all do well.. • We are three individual congregations who are all loyal and welcoming.

• Our Churchwardens, PCC and ECC members, secretaries, treasurers and all of our many varied

volunteers are keen, supportive and approachable.

• Congregation numbers are reasonably healthy across the three churches.

• There are Mission Action Plans in place for each Parish.

• We all seek to not be overly dependent upon our clergy.

• Both Old Brampton and Barlow are popular for weddings, and baptism and wedding co-ordinators

are in place at Old Brampton and Barlow.

• All three churches are financially sound.

• All three parishes have a good on-line presence.

What we do well in Barlow: • St Lawrence Church has strong community links and pastoral care.

• In recent years our church has enjoyed a strong relationship with our local village CofE school.

• Barlow has a “relaxed traditional ritual” which intrigues people as it is unusual to find in a small

village church. It also has an open churchyard which, through family connections, has brought

several members to the congregation.

• Barlow has an old and atmospheric building in a good state of repair, and the recent building of an

extension including kitchen and toilets has opened the church up to new opportunities.

What we do well in Loundsley Green: • We have an excellent working relationship within our Local Ecumenical Partnership. A sharing

agreement is in place, and both denominations worship together as one congregation in a flexible,

modern building.

• Stay and Play group, Annual Holiday club, and good attendance at Parade services for Uniformed

Organisations (ie Scouts and Guides).

• A sense of fun, a “can do” attitude and lots of cake!

What we do well in Old Brampton: • We have a beautiful, historic and atmospheric church building, which is open during daylight hours

and in a good state of repair.

1 The LEP is a shared partnership between the CofE and the Methodists with shared leadership between the Anglican

incumbent and the Methodist Minister

• We also have access to space in the “old schoolroom” adjacent to the churchyard, which is used for

church functions and meetings. This space is also made available for outside hire.

• Our congregation has a very strong bell-ringing tradition, and also has a hand-bell group.

• We enjoy a good variety of service types ranging from monthly all age worship (lead by a willing

team of volunteers) to some use of the Book of Common Prayer.

• A successful Annual Fete – teas in the garden (courtesy of the owners), brass band – and other

social events in the schoolroom.

• Ownership of the Glebe Field, currently used only for the Fete, and a field below the churchyard.

What we would all like to work on…

• Mission and outreach within the parishes need further encouragement, development and support –

in particular amongst the disadvantaged suburban communities of Holme Hall and Loundsley Green.

• We would like to reach into new areas of housing, both private and council owned, which fall within

our Parishes.

• We do have some activities aimed at children, young people and families, and we generally have

good relationships with local schools; we would like to build upon these links.

What we would like to work on in Barlow: • We would like to find ways to attract more people from the resident population of the parish; we

attract people from outside the area successfully, but would like to reach more people who actually

live in the village!

• We have a marquee which works well for events, but our aspiration is for a permanent parish room

extension.

What we would like to work on in Loundsley Green: • As we are generally an ageing congregation, we would love to grow in number, and increase the

diversity in the age profile of our congregation!

What we would like to work on in Old Brampton: • There are sections of the resident population of our parish who are underrepresented in our church

community (ie Cutthorpe village and newer developments towards Chesterfield).

• We recognise that we need to take steps to ensure that our buildings (Church and Old Schoolroom)

are suitably accessible to all people, especially people with poor mobility and older members of our

church family. We are in progress of seeking funding and a faculty for a significant re-order of the

church building; more details are provided later in this document.

• We would like to develop our Church Music; ideally we would like to recruit a replacement Organist

and Choirmaster, and be in a position to reinstate a regular choir.

Our hopes for our new Incumbent…

The church communities have been asked to submit their hopes for our next priest, below are some of the

common themes expressed across the three churches.

We hope that our next priest will be someone who…

• has energy, commitment, a good sense of humour and fun; who can get on well with, and relate to,

people of diverse age ranges and social backgrounds.

• is a team player, and a team builder with good communication and interpersonal skills.

• wants to be part of an active team of lay and ordained colleagues who share in leading worship,

pastoral care, missional activities and church governance.

• who wants to be part of a partnership with Methodist colleagues in Chesterfield Circuit, and

especially share leadership with the current resident Methodist Minister at Loundsley Green.

• enjoys and will be supportive of a variety of worship styles and traditions.

• has a passion for ministry with children and families, as well as older members of the community.

• will lead us and guide us in our desire to build and grow loving, totally inclusive, church

communities.

• is a gifted preacher and teacher, rooted in God’s word, who we can journey alongside to grow in

faith, and to help us to bring others to know Christ.

• can take a leading role in helping us to find ways that our church communities can grow in

spirituality, missional engagement and in number.

• will offer guidance as we seek to develop closer ties with our local communities, especially

disadvantaged communities within our parishes.

• has experience of working in schools and with other youth organisations, residential care homes and

other community groups.

• is looking to work alongside committed and active PCCs (at Barlow and Old Brampton) and ECC (Ecumenical Church Council at Loundsley Green) in developing our vision and missional strategy;

building on what we have achieved in the past, and take a leading role in seeking where God is

calling us in the next stage of the life of our churches.

• will approach the role in a flexible and creative way, and have a willingness to “muck in”!

• who will enjoy leading a team of active volunteers in welcoming people to our churches for weddings

and baptisms, and supporting families through funeral ministry.

• who is committed to following best safeguarding practice; helping us to ensure that we are

welcoming, inclusive and safe communities for people from all walks of life.

• be a part of three church communities who are welcoming, committed and respectful of tradition and history; who are also willing to embrace a level of change as we explore new ways of worshipping

and being disciples together.

We are all seeking a leader who will inspire us, challenge us

and most importantly love us!

What we will do for you

• All three church communities are committed to supporting and working alongside you.

• We shall always support you in prayer. We shall also seek to offer appropriate pastoral support to you and your family, while respecting your need for privacy.

• We appreciate that you cannot be in three places at once, so we endeavour to honour the fact that the time when you are active in ministry is shared between the three churches and parishes.

• We fully respect your need for time off for rest and retreat, and the need for you to have holiday

time away from the parishes!

• Between the three parishes we pay for your working expenses in full.

Accommodation – The Vicarage The Vicarage is a large, relatively

modem detached property built

about 1980 at the head of a quiet cul-de-sac of similar privately owned

properties on the edge of a large

housing estate.

The property is very close to the

Holme Brook Valley country park,

Linacre Woods and is close to the Peak District National Park and is

three miles from Barlow Church, two

miles from Old Brampton Church by road and half a mile from Loundsley

Green.

The property was considerably improved in 2002, including a new

central heating system, and a new

kitchen was installed in 2006.

The accommodation comprises four bedrooms (one en-suite and another with hand basin), bathroom/W.C

combined, entrance hall, two reception rooms, study with access off the enclosed porch, kitchen, utility room

and disabled access W.C. All the rooms, including the entrance hall, are spacious. Outside, there are fairly large gardens, attracting frequent and varied bird visitors, a double garage and parking for several cars on

the wide loose stone drive. The house has been partially redecorated during early 2020.

There is a good choice of both primary and secondary schools and some local shops within close proximity to

the Vicarage, with good public transport links to the main facilities in Chesterfield, some two miles away.

Barlow Parish

Barlow is a village parish about three to four miles to the north west of Chesterfield. Still a strong farming community, it has expanded over the years and has become a dormitory village serving the Sheffield and Chesterfield areas. The population is around 1,000 and the village is fairly linear with the church being situated in the older part of the village (Great Barlow). The newer part of the village is about half a mile away with a scattering of properties joining the two centres. The recently refurbished and well used village hall lies mid-way between the old and new parts of the village. At the other end of the village (from the church) there is a mix of properties. There is council housing and a mix of both older and more modern owner occupied properties. There is a church school currently with 90 pupils, a small Methodist Chapel (where Rev’d Tracey Harris has oversight) and three pubs (two of which are extremely popular pub/restaurants). In the village there is an active Women's Institute group, young farmers and a pre-school group. There is an active local choir, Barlow Singers. The village hall is well used with activities such as fitness classes. The village holds an annual Well-dressing with co-incident flower festival in the church. For the last seven years, the parish has also held an “Open Gardens” day.

Loundsley Green Parish Loundsley Green is situated 2 miles due west of

Chesterfield town centre. Built in 1963 as a large

council estate as part of the Government devolving to the regions, the new parish

incorporated some existing private housing, and

many of the council houses/flats are now in

private ownership or under social/sheltered

housing schemes.

The area has a population of around 3,915 with

Brockwell Nursery and Infant School (230 pupils), Brockwell Junior School (250 pupils) and

Ashgate Croft Special School (140) all close to

the church. There is no industry, doctors or other community focus, apart from the church,

community centre and a few shops.

The church is situated on Pennine Way and in the heart of the estate next to open fields with

popular walking routes. There is a children's

playground, skateboard park, and sports field all

next to the church and the Methodist manse shares the same grounds. It has the advantage of its own car park and there is a regular bus service around

the estate and into town.

The Chesterfield State of the Borough Report gives the following information about the Loundsley Green

Ward. Last updated November 2016 and based on 2011 census.

Population: 3915

Social Housing: 48%

Pensioner households: 41.6%

Lone parent households 4%

describe themselves as Christian 80%

Minority Ethnic Groups 1.7%

Old Brampton Parish The Parish of Old Brampton covers about 10 square miles

and contains a population of approximately 4,600 people.

The Parish, whilst largely rural in character, contains a modern dense urban area forming the western growth

area of Chesterfield, comprising the estates of Holme

Hall, Ashgate Heights and Linacre Woods, where two thirds of the parish population lives. This part of the

parish is within the administrative area of Chesterfield

Borough Council and is immediately adjacent to Loundsley Green Parish. The rest of the parish is

dispersed with various villages, hamlets and farmsteads

being within the administrative areas of Brampton Parish Council and North East Derbyshire District Council.

The principal communities within the

Parish:

Old Brampton

The village of Old Brampton is about 3 miles from the centre of

Chesterfield. It was originally, in area, a large rural parish which

developed along the main road running out towards the Peak District. There are no shops and just one pub at the top end of

the village. The village is served by an hourly bus service 170

between Bakewell and Chesterfield (20 minutes to town centre). This part of the Parish is within the catchment areas of Wigley

Primary and Brookfield Community Schools.

Cutthorpe

Grew from a small farming hamlet adjoining Upper Newbold

(Newbold Parish). There are 3 pubs all serving food, a well-used

cricket and recreation field and its own primary school on the western edge of the village. There is a Village Institute which used to house, in conjunction with the Barlow and Cutthorpe Methodist Church, occasional

services for Harvest, Christmas and the village well dressing. Services are no longer run there and the

ownership of the Institute is in the process of being transferred from Old Brampton Church to Brampton Parish Council. There is a regular (but infrequent) bus service, which serves the village, between Barlow and

Chesterfield. The village is within the Outwood Academy catchment area. Cutthorpe, like Barlow Parish, has

an annual “Well Dressing”.

Holme Hall

A largely post 1970's estate to the eastern side of Linacre Road and immediately adjacent to Loundsley Green. There is a mixture of housing types, many provided by the public sector serving the socially deprived

- people with disabilities, people being rehoused under the Community Care scheme and the young homeless.

The community has a primary school, which also has rooms for use as a community centre. Secondary

education is provided by Outwood Academy School. There is a pub and a good small shopping centre with a convenience store, post office, pharmacy, two other shops, hairdresser, medical centre and dentist. Also there

is a nursery and community church which serves the ministry and outreach of Holmebrook Valley Church

(Acorn Fellowship). The Woodlands Nursing Home is nearby where the Rector or a Reader has conducted a periodic Christian service. There is an hourly 170 bus service into Chesterfield and out past Old Brampton Church.

Ashgate and Linacre Woods These areas are additions to the Holme Hall area over the last 30 years comprising private housing of various sizes providing for a mix of professional people, young families and retired people. The

shopping and community area, transport and education are the same as for Holme Hall.

Wadshelf and Wigley

Wadshelf is a small village with a variety of housing that attracts some young families. There’s a Community

Hall which is used for various social and other community events. There is a children's playground. The 170

bus service passes through the village and the schools are Wigley Primary and Brookfield Community School. Wigley is a small hamlet between Old Brampton and Wadshelf. The small Wigley Primary School is

situated here and there is a pub / restaurant.

Remainder of the Parish

The remainder of the Western Parish is made up of small hamlets and isolated farms. The Peak District

National Park has part of its Eastern limits within the Parish and some of the Parish forms part of the

Chatsworth Estate. There are various pubs/restaurants serving the tourist trade and a group of small industrial units at Eastmoor.

Other Ministry Areas

Pastoral care is provided at Ashgate Nursing Home being a home for the elderly and mentally infirm. The Rector or a Reader holds a short service periodically.

Ash Green next door to Ashgate Nursing Home which is a purpose built complex for people with acute

learning difficulties. It has its own chaplain.

At the western end of Ashgate Road is the Hospice that opened in 1988. Whilst being an independent charity

established to provide specialist care for people of North Derbyshire suffering with a terminal illness, the Hospice has links with the NHS Palliative Care Services.

The Hospice has its own full time chaplain and offers holistic care. The hospice also operates a day care unit

on four days a week. Most patients attend for one or two days a week, depending on needs. Transport can be provided. The Hospice extension provides a purpose built day centre offering more facilities and able to

welcome more referrals.

Chesterfield and local amenities Chesterfield is perhaps most famous for its parish church of St Mary and All Saints, more commonly known as “The Crooked

Spire”

The town of Chesterfield provides for many of the working, social

and health needs of our parishes.

There is the Royal Hospital on the east side of the town with A &

E.

In town there is an extensive range of shops and services with one of the largest outdoor markets in the country; an active

theatre and a well used concert/conference centre.

There’s an excellent rail service to all parts of the Country via the Midland Main Line to London and Sheffield and on cross country

services to the north-east/south west and north-west/east Anglia.

The coach station hosts a wide selection of destinations

throughout the country.

Chesterfield College, part of the University of Derby, provides

further education for all of the community.

There is a sports centre, health suite and swimming baths at

Queens Park (a town park, with county cricket pitch, boating lake, etc.). There are three golf courses,

Tapton, South Chesterfield and Chesterfield (also known as Walton).

There’s a Tesco Extra superstore, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Lidls, Aldi, a 4 star hotel and a state-of-the-art football stadium (Pro-Act

Stadium).

There are many options for eating out with a wide range of cafes and restaurants in the town centre and a wealth of country pubs

and restaurants to the West.

Only 12 miles North, is the city of Sheffield, with excellent shops,

two outstanding theatres and the City Hall for concerts, two

universities and, on the outskirts, the renowned Meadowhall Shopping Centre.

There’s a local commercial radio station, Peak-FM and we’re in the (BBC) Radio Sheffield and BBC Look North broadcast and news

area. There’s a weekly newspaper, the Derbyshire Times.

Schools

Schools within the Parish include:

• Ashgate Croft School (approx. 140 on role)

• Brockwell Junior School (approx. 250 on role)

• Brockwell Nursery and Infant School (approx. 230 on role)

• Cutthorpe Primary School (approx.104 on role)

• Holme Hall Primary School (approx. 124 on role) in a modern building

• Wigley Primary School (approx. 49 on role)

Schools outside the Parish include:

• Brookfield Community School (approx. 1350 on role). (St Thomas Parish)

• Outwood Academy School (approx. 1150 on role, with a sixth form of 150). Moved into a brand

new building in 2006 having been on split sites. (Newbold Parish)

• St Mary’s Catholic High School (approx. 1260 on role, with a sixth form of 250). (Newbold Parish)

The Peak District The Peak District National Park is adjacent to the Parishes and provides a

wonderful range of activities. Walking,

cycling, horse riding, caving, fishing and rock climbing are very popular; there are

several historic buildings to visit including

Chatsworth House (host also to the annual RHS Flower Show, Country Fair

and Horse Trials), Haddon Hall (used for

many historic film settings) and, to the East of the M1, Hardwick Hall, all within

15 minutes travel. Bakewell, a very

attractive small town, famous for its

pudding, has many shops and cafés and lovely walks alongside the river. There

are Country Shows (largely with farming

origins) in Hope, Ashover, Wooley Moor and, probably for 2020, the re-

introduction of one of the largest, in

Bakewell. These are just a few of the many things which will be nearby your vicarage.

The Peak Park covers 555 square miles from the rolling dales in mid-south Derbyshire through to the Dark

Peak with its dark gritstone crags and sweeping moors. The gritstone edges (such as Kinder Scout, Bleaklow

and Saddleworth Moor) provide views that give a sense of remoteness while

some parts are easily accessible for all to

experience. The reservoirs of Ladybower,

Howden and Derwent are magnificent “man made” features. The White Peak

has rolling limestone hills and steep,

wooded, flower-rich dales with their distinctive dry stone walls enclosing

fields.

Further South, there’s Carsington Water, another man-made water feature with its

own Sailing Club, but also a very

important site for bird-watching.

There is an amazing variety of landscape

waiting to be enjoyed – and on your

doorstep - as Incumbent of our joint benefice.

Derbyshire is the “home” of Well Dressings and both Cutthorpe and Barlow create and celebrate them

annually. Designs are made onto a bed of soft clay laid on normally wooden frames. Flower petals, seeds,

leaves etc. are pressed into the damp clay to form a colourful picture. One of your roles will be to officiate at

the Blessing of the Wells service and procession through the village of Barlow.

The 'art' of dressing wells with flowers probably goes back to pagan times - a thank you to the gods for the

gift of fresh water. It has, almost universally within the County, been adopted / adapted by Christians.

St Lawrence, Barlow Our roots are in our Anglo Catholic worship tradition with incense – but

we also like to have fun !!

Worship and church life The PCC considered issues arising from

the Ordination of Women legislation at a

PCC meeting on 6th June 2011 which

followed an open public meeting and resolved not to pass either Resolutions A

or B.

Services

The worship at Barlow is ’relaxed’ Anglo Catholic using Common Worship

(traditional wording). Incense is used.

There is a Parish Mass each Sunday at 11am. Additionally, there is an eight

o’clock said mass on the second Sunday in

the month and, also on the second Sunday, is a family mass at 11 am with the children taking an active part in the service. We are very

grateful that we have a stable and growing group (up to 10 or 12) of

regularly worshipping children and young people several of whom are on our rota as servers. They also undertake other regular duties at the

parish mass.

We have recently replaced our hymn books and now use Anglican Hymns Old and New with a full set of accompanying CD s. for when our organist is unavailable.

There are several school services (e.g. Christingle and Harvest) and

several other school services in church during term time including

individual class services and services at the start and end of each

school term. We hold a service of commemoration for the departed for families of those recently bereaved.

Volunteers We have three adult servers, two of whom are licensed to administer the chalice together with the young people mentioned above. Our organist of 39 years has recently retired but we are fortunate to have a replacement. We do not have a choir.

There is a rota of reliable sides-persons and cleaning teams. We have

two skillful flower arrangers and are lucky to have a retired builder and a small team of volunteers who give their time every week on repair

and maintenance and cutting the churchyard grass. Some of our

volunteers are not members of our congregation and we cherish the support we receive from members of the community.

The Parish Magazine

The Parish Magazine editor has recently taken over and is again a

member of the community but not a church worshipper. The magazine is distributed by members of the congregation and volunteers from the

village.

PCC

There are seventeen members of the PCC including three deanery synod reps, the two churchwardens and the Incumbent, the Assistant

Vicar and licensed reader. We meet at least six times a year. There is

an active Social and Fundraising subcommittee of the PCC made up of some members of the PCC and several non-churchgoing parishioners.

Congregation

Most of the congregation is over sixty years old (80% on average

at the parish mass) but we have younger families with 10 children

who attend regularly and we seek to attract more younger people as regular worshippers. We have strong links with the local school.

The Incumbent goes into school every week and we have places on

the governing body for church representatives. One of our PCC members is Chair of School Governors. Our electoral roll stands at

42 since last year’s revision, with over sixty percent of those on

the roll living outside the parish. The majority of these are

attracted to Barlow Church by its style of worship and its relaxed friendly outlook and we feel it is one of Barlow's strengths and

should be retained and cherished.

Statistics for mission (for the year to December 2018)

Baptisms - 11

Marriage and marriage blessings – 3

Funerals - 8

Attendance Easter Day- 52 (41 communicants)

Christmas Eve and Day- 135 (36 communicants)

Finance Each year our expenditure exceeds our income by £6-8000.

Despite this we have been able to pay 100% of our Parish share in recent years. This is entirely as a result of our Fundraising team.

We do have designated funds to deal with substantial repairs and

capital expenditure. In 2013 we paid for a new roof at a cost of

£46,000 and in 2010 we paid for a new kitchen and toilet extension costing circa £120,000.

Our Links with the School Barlow village school has approximately 90 pupils. We view our

links with the school to be very important. Our former Incumbent went into school at least once a week and encouraged the school

to use church for school services at the start and end of each term.

The Incumbent would be expected to take part in Collective Worship, the impact of which was rated excellent in the last Church

Schools' inspection report June 2019. School children and their

families have supported our family all age services mentioned

earlier. We hope that any future Incumbent will maintain and strengthen our ties with school. The Incumbent and churchwardens

are trustees of the school. The Incumbent would be expected to

take up a position on the schools Governing Board.

Barlow Primary school is a Church of England Voluntary Controlled

School catering for children from 5-11. Set in a quiet and attractive

site near to open countryside, the school makes full use of the local environment to support the education of the children. The

school has four teaching classes, a library area, which is also used

for assemblies, and a forest school classroom set in local woodland near the school. It was deemed "Good" by the last church schools'

inspection (part of the general schools' inspection process). The

SIAMS report in June this year will be available on request.

The new Incumbent will embrace the school’s mission: “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works

and give glory to your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16.

Barlow Church of England School believes each individual has a voice to be valued and talents to be nurtured. We all strive to grow

in wisdom together to enable each person to be their best possible

self.

"The links between the school and church have been greatly

Page 15: 2020 Parish Profile · 2020 Parish Profile The Joint Benefice of St Peter and St Paul, Old Brampton and St Lawrence, Barlow ... In addition, there is a recently qualified reader,

strengthened as a result of the work of the former Incumbent. As a school we hold regular special services

in church and these are always very well attended by parents and members of the community to share and

worship together. As a school we very much hope that whoever replaces the former Incumbent will have

similar qualities. It is important to us as a church school to have strong links with our local church" - Head teacher.

Social, Fund Raising and Church Activities We have an active Social and Fund Raising committee which is a sub-committee of the PCC but we have co-opted members onto the committee who are not church members. Our aim, through social activities, is to bring non-churchgoing members of the community into church to allow them to get used to being in the church building and to give them an opportunity to meet and get to know people from the congregation.

Open Gardens Over the last 7 years up to 20 gardens have opened their gates for the church, to enable the public to see

their beautiful gardens, this is a successful 1 day event each year creating the largest single contribution to

our funds.

Wells Week The well dressing is an important event in the church and village calendar. The week starts with a service in church followed by a blessing of the wells procession. The village has three well dressings and a carnival day is held on the Saturday. The Main Well has strong links with the church and the Churchwardens and Incumbent are Trustees. In church during the Wells week, we hold a flower festival, which is highly regarded and attracts many visitors from far and wide. Church members serve cream teas and refreshments during wells week. This again is very popular and attracts many visitors. Both events are important fund raising and mission opportunities for us.

Church concerts We have held a series of concerts in church in recent years for fund raising. These are now held on an irregular basis and serve as a way of bringing the community and church family together socially.

Harvest Festival and Supper

In the evening of the day of our Harvest Festival we organise a

harvest supper with a cooked meal and entertainment. This is a popular fund raising and social event attracting both

congregation members and non-churchgoers.

Singles Christmas Party We arrange a Christmas party each year with a cooked Christmas dinner and entertainment for people in the village who live alone. We also provide transport for those who need it. The event is partly funded from the proceeds of the Gisbourne Trust charity.

Coach Trips

One of our PCC members organises a number of coach trips each

year, often to cathedral cities but also to other destinations.

This is open to our friends from Old Brampton and Loundsley Green and to anyone who would like to join us.

The Church Building and its Associated Properties

The Church Barlow Church is about 850 years old but the origins are believed to be Anglo Saxon. The fabric of the building is quite good. The Quinquennial inspection has just been carried out in October 2019. The report shows that there are no expensive urgent repair issues which we do not have funds to meet.

In 2011 we completed the building of an extension which provides a kitchen, disabled W.C. and store. The vestry has also

been refurbished. We use a marquee for some church events.

The church has been redecorated in the last few years and very kindly paid for by a local resident. There is disabled access.

The “new” extension: Opened by the Bishop in 2011.

The Church Yard

The churchyard is open and still in use for burials and the burial of ashes. A few years ago, with the help of the community, we bought the adjacent Glebe field from the Diocese with a view to extending the churchyard in the future. Part of the field has now been dedicated by the Bishop and is ready for use. We view our churchyard as an important mission opportunity. Several people have become members of our congregation as a result of having a loved one buried there.

Our links with Old Brampton The Deanery Pastoral Plan proposed that Barlow and Old Brampton should share a priest. The two parishes became a united benefice in February 2009. The parish of Old Brampton is geographically adjacent to Barlow, but the distance between the churches by road is 5 miles.

Parish Website Barlow has a village website but recently we have developed a church website (links are included on the "Links" page at the end of the Profile). We are fortunate to use the services of a "Webmaster" within the Old Brampton congregation whose expertise has enabled us to produce and maintain an interesting set of pages. Members of our own congregation are receiving training on the updating of the information on the site.

General The clergy expenses are shared pro rata between the parishes and are paid in full as is the Rectory water bill.

Mission Statement We have an open policy on baptisms, weddings and funerals. Our open churchyard policy has operated for a number of years and several of our regular congregation living outside the Parish have become members as a result of the funerals of loved ones taking place at Barlow. We welcome visitors most warmly.

Our mission is to put the church at the heart of our community and our community at the heart of the church.

Loundsley Green Church Ecumenical Partnership

Who We Are: Loundsley Green Church has a distinct identity of its own. As a Local Ecumenical Partnership (LEP) it reflects the richness of its shared traditions and heritage (Anglican and Methodist). Originally each church had its

own multipurpose building across the road from each other. In 2010 the congregations began worshiping

together as one congregation in the Methodist building and in 2011 a Community Trust was given a 35-year lease from the Diocese of Derby to run the former Anglican Church of the Ascension building as a

Community Centre. A sharing agreement is in place and a revised constitution is currently progressing

through the necessary procedures.

We are described as a friendly, hospitable and welcoming church and seek to be a congregation that will

provide a welcome and a safe sanctuary for people of all backgrounds.

“I have been a member of LGC for a few years and having always attended a traditional Methodist

Church I was particularly cautious about joining an LEP church. I needn’t have worried too much, the congregation were very welcoming and keen for me to become part of their church

family. They are a ‘caring lot’ and show concern for our elderly, children and vulnerable adults

showing the love of Jesus in all they do.”

Mission Statement:

Reviewed in January 2020

“To be a worshipping living fellowship in the Holy Spirit and to serve our neighbourhood following Christ’s

example.”

We will do this through:

Worship:

• Engaging in meaningful and flexible worship, celebrating the traditions of both

congregations and exploring different

styles of worship.

Meeting the Community

• Working with others to meet the needs of the community;

• Building on the regular contact with young

families, uniformed organisations, schools and older members of the community;

• Working with and supporting the Community Trust (using the former Ascension building) to meet the

wider needs of the community;

• The provision of a safe space for the community to hire the building following church safeguarding

procedures.

Wider World

• Supporting and standing alongside those in trouble or need;

• Joining with others in the struggle for justice.

The Mission Action Plan is updated annually and reviewed every three years.

A copy of the Mission Action Plan is available.

Clergy & Lay Ministry

Currently there is a Methodist Minister in post, an Associate Priest, with a vacancy for an Anglican Priest.

Two Readers and 2 Methodist Local Preachers, one of whom is also one of the Readers. In addition, there

are 2 retired clergy, (representing each of the two denominations) and 2 accredited Worship Leaders along

with a strong active worship group.

Worship and Church Life The average Sunday morning congregation is around 27, mainly older people with occasional young families

and visitors. Membership and Parish Roll totals 43 with a number of house-bound members or members in

care homes. Pastoral Care of the congregation has been extended and there are currently 4 pastoral visitors who have been trained and commissioned alongside the many who look after each other on a less formal

basis. There is also a supporting prayer list.

Services

• Alternating Methodist/ Anglican morning services at 9.45 am; The first and fourth Sundays being centred on the Eucharist and the second and third Sunday being services of the word. However,

Loundsley Green Church would welcome the opportunity to review the pattern of worship with both

the new Priest and the Methodist Minister, in conjunction with the other two churches;

• On the 5th Sunday of each month the worship group lead the planning and service. These are varied types of service and tend to be less formal;

• An evening communion service at 6 pm on the second Sunday;

• A midweek communion service on Tuesday mornings at 9.30 am;

• Mid-week uniformed services are held about three times a year, usually at Easter, Harvest and

Christmas;

• Local schools, Brockwell Nursery/ Infant and Brockwell Junior Schools occasionally use the building

for worship and the clergy are regular visitors to both schools on the estate, taking assemblies;

• Family-friendly activities are organised throughout the year, including a well-established summer

holiday club.

What We Do Well Short courses which includes a Lent course, and a LIFE group which is currently meeting monthly for

reflection, fellowship, prayer and teacakes!

Other Associated Activities

• Services for uniformed groups - we listened to the leaders of uniformed groups which meet at the

church and across at the community centre and

this has resulted in no longer having Parade services on a Sunday but instead developing

midweek worship around Easter, Harvest and

Christmas (Christingles). This has been

successful.

• Stay and Play meets every Wednesday afternoon

in term time. This is led by a small church team

who give time and opportunity for parents/grandparents to have a chat and a cup of

tea in a relaxed and safe environment with lots of

activities for pre-school children. There are

currently over 40 families registered with an average weekly attendance of 18. The group also

supports a student through work experience from Ashgate Croft Special School.

• Summer Holiday Club led by a church team for five mornings during a week in August; fun

activities, Bible stories and food for children up to the age of 12 years. Parents and carers are also

welcome to stay and all enjoy a meal together. Average daily attendance is 45.

• Prayer Shawl Ministry: This is a mid-week

event usually every three weeks. The group meets for reflection, fellowship, prayer and sharing their

creative skills resulting in shawls, blankets and

scarves being given to those in both need and joy as an unconditional gift of love. There are usually

between 12 and 15 in attendance which includes

people from different churches as well as some

with no formal church connection.

• Mothers Union is very active, meeting monthly,

and has been able to support members of two

other churches who have had to close their

meetings.

• In addition, there are weekly Saturday coffee

mornings and lunch every first Saturday. Social

and fundraising events are held throughout the year.

Quotes after Christmas Vision Day:

“You didn't know what you have done for us this afternoon”

“Thank you so much – what a lovely afternoon”

What Challenges Us • Work with young families during the year

continues to thrive but we need to continue

developing relationships and to seek more ways

to engage them in the life of the church. • Seek more ways to involve those who hire the

building in the life of the church.

• Statistics show that there is significant social housing in the area and a number of older people

- many living alone. Supportive housing has

recently been developed close to the church; The

church needs to explore what they need to do to offer hospitality and worship opportunities for

people of all backgrounds.

• Continue developing relationships with the two schools.

• How the three very different churches can work more closely together in mission, prayer and

worship.

Church Governance, Property and Finance Church leadership, administration and finance have been combined and Ordained and Lay Ministry work

together from both denominations. A safeguarding policy is in place following the Methodist guidelines.

Those who work with children and adults who may be vulnerable have all received training and necessary

checks.

This accessible single-storey building was built in 1964. As part of the two churches coming together, an

architect was employed to help with redesigning some aspects of the church to create a more accessible and useful space. There is a small chapel off the vestibule and an office; a large church/hall with vestry and two

small side rooms. There is a TV screen and laptop which can be used to enhance worship and for use during

various events if required. In 2015 the roof was renewed and slightly redesigned. In the last 10 months (2019) a new kitchen has been installed with modern and energy saving equipment. In addition, the toilets

were also refurbished.

All this has been financed through direct giving donations, grants and fundraising events. No major work is envisaged in the future. The church is debt free and currently pays both Parish Share and Circuit

Assessment in full. Planned Giving accounts for 80% of income with a further 11% from rental.

Those who hire the building

The premises are well used by community groups including Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Keep Fit, Pilates,

WI. It is a venue for local elections, concerts, and birthday parties. Hire agreements and rent are reviewed annually. There are different levels of charges depending on charity or business status. The church does not

hire the building out to support its mission but rather to cover costs of utilities and general maintenance.

St Peter and St Paul, Old Brampton

Life and ministry The Church of St Peter

and St Paul is inclusive

and welcoming for all ages, backgrounds,

traditions and

experiences. Many people comment that they find

the Faith Community of

Old Brampton welcoming

and warm.

Our Faith Community is

open to a wide range of traditions and practices

(including the Book of

Common Prayer) enabling us to worship and follow

God in ways that are vibrant

and meaningful.

People of all ages participate in the church services, through reading, leading intercessions and offering a

ministry of welcome. There is a children's area in the north/west corner of the church for use during services

if needed! A team of chalice assistants help with the distribution of Holy Communion, and we have experienced Servers. A commitment to shared ministry ensures Readers lead

and participate in worship on a regular basis. An All Age Service Team plans and organises all age services

and support.

Junior Church is held on the 4th Sunday of the month in The Schoolroom (next to church) at 9.30 am. The

children and their leaders join the main service in time for Holy Communion. During their time in the service they have the opportunity to share with the congregation accounts of their activities during their own time

together.

A Bible Study Group meets on a regular basis when there is an Incumbent in post.

We have an occasional multi-age robed choir, which until his retirement, 12 months ago, was led by a dedicated and enthusiastic

organist, contributes greatly to the whole ambience of the

services and is planned to be an integral part of our worship.

The hymn book 'Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New' is used. We are currently endeavouring to recruit a replacement Organist and

Choirmaster.

A weekly pew sheet gives details of services, the readings for

the day and forthcoming activities. A corner of the church is

available as a focus for personal prayer and devotions and for pastoral care after services.

Refreshments are served in the adjacent schoolroom after the main Sunday service to promote fellowship and welcome

newcomers. There is provision for tea and coffee making facilities at the

back of church though there are no toilets in church at present. Refreshments are served

mostly in the schoolroom after services.

The church is open during daylight hours.

The Church Building and its Associated Properties

The Church

St Peter and St Paul is the focal point of

the village. Beautiful

in its simplicity, it dates from 1100 and is a Grade 1 Listed Building.

It is built of local sandstone and

consists of a nave and chancel, two aisles, tower and spire, and porch

(please see the church website for

details of its extensive history).

It can accommodate 220 to 250 people.

The building is in good order following

major repairs to the tower, spire and north aisle in 1999. It has a sound

system; and limited but DAC-approved

disabled access.

In 2010, repairs were completed to the

tower and both lychgates were re-thatched. Old Brampton Church is a

warm and welcoming building, both in

physical terms and atmosphere. Open

to visitors during daylight hours, it is well maintained and problems are dealt with as promptly as possible.

We have recently installed “pew cushions” for the main aisle pews.

The Churchyard

This large tree-lined area surrounds the church,

making a very attractive setting. It was officially

closed in 1996 and is now maintained by North East Derbyshire District Council, with regular help

from loyal parishioners. A Garden of Rest was

opened in 2001 for the burial of ashes in unmarked plots. There is a Book of Remembrance

in the church in association with this.

The Car Park

The car park is not surfaced and is prone to being

muddy and not lit, nor with any street lighting, at

night.

The Schoolroom and Church Lodge

Adjacent to the west boundary of the churchyard are the Schoolroom and Church Lodge; the latter

is occupied by the verger (now retired from full-

time and part-time employment) under a residential tenancy. These buildings are under the

administration of the Trustees, who are the

Incumbent and the churchwardens.

The schoolroom was built in 1836 and was the local school until a new one was built at Wigley in

1896. It acts as the centre for church social

activities and meetings (the church pays an annual rent) as well as being hired out to other

users. It has a maximum capacity of 70, and

benefited greatly from major improvements to the kitchen and toilet facilities in 2004.

Financial Statement The church accounts are in good order with a healthy balance and reserves to cover normal activities.

In both 2018 and 2019, the PCC paid an additional 10% over its Parish Quota.

Accounts are available on request.

The Way Ahead

Re-ordering of Church

Our church is lacking in provision for proper disabled access, has no toilets within the church buildings (the schoolroom is a 100 yard walk away) and no kitchen facilities for light refreshments. The Church Architect

has produced a selection of schemes, one of which is favoured to move on to obtain a Faculty in the first

instance. We are seeking a volunteer Fund Raising Manager from within the Church Community. We have suspended

further work necessary prior to applying for and obtaining a faculty pending finding such a volunteer.

We do not underestimate the enormity of the task – this is likely to have a cost of in excess of £200,000 for

the full project. But there will be every opportunity for our new incumbent to influence the scheme to be chosen.

Vision / Mission

We are well aware of the fact that we do not yet reach out to the large communities in Holme Hall – neither

the privately owned and affluent areas nor the council owned properties housing many disadvantaged and

low income families.

We would love to extend our physical presence throughout the whole of the Parish and to build further on

the foundations of collaborative ministry with the faith communities of Barlow and Loundsley Green. We

would like our Incumbent to work with us in this.

We should continue to support the groups already working well in the church, as well as striving for new

ideas within our Parish.

As a Faith Community we believe that by demonstrating the love of God, we provide a welcome and

acceptance for all. We hope that all those coming to the church as strangers are rapidly integrated into the fellowship.
