QUOTEWORTHYQUOTEWORTHYHere is what Sporting Director & Head Coach Bruce Arena, midfielder Lee Nguyen, and defender Henry Kessler had to say following Saturday's draw vs. New York City FC:

Revolution Sporting Director & Head Coach Bruce ArenaOn Lee Nguyen and the team's performance vs. New York City FC:Arena: “I thought Lee [Nguyen] played well and he’s a good addition to the team. Obviously, that’s a game that can go either way. Both teams had some chances. Obviously, we weren’t able to capitalize on ours. We tried to push the game at the end and get a goal. I think we made one or two mis-takes that resulted in some counterattacks for New York City FC as well. But I think, overall, this was a much improved performance for our team than I’ve seen over the last three weeks or so.”

---Revolution Midfielder Lee NguyenOn returning to the Revolution's starting lineup: Nguyen: “I felt great. The staff have done a great job in trying to manage my load throughout this week and trying to be ready for this game. I felt better than what we expected going into it so it was good to get those minutes underneath me. It was great to play with the guys again, lots of familiar faces so it wasn’t too bad picking up right where I left off. We got a lot of great guys on this team and when you’ve got great footballers around you it’s easy to play.”

---Revolution Defender Henry KesslerOn keeping a clean sheet: Kessler: “As a defender, you’re right – our primary responsibility is to keep the ball out of the net. Having said that, we still want to be able to build out and we have other parts to our job. We’re a part of the process of scoring as well. I thought today we actually built decently and worked the ball pret-ty well, so that was better from Andrew [Farrell] and I. Myself especially, it’s something I wanted to get better at. Not scoring is something obviously we don’t want to happen, but our primary responsibility is a clean sheet, so we’re happy about that.”

Goalkeeper Matt Turner is off to a prolific start this season, building on a breakout 2019 campaign that culminated in two U.S. Men's National Team call ups. Turner has registered four shutouts and conceded only 10 goals through 11 regular season appearances. Among goalkeepers with at least 800 minutes played, Turner is tied for third in goals against average and second in saves percentage:

As a unit, the Revolution back line has been among the league's stoutest despite featuring four different center backs to accommodate injuries and squad rotation. The team has yielded just 11 goals in league play, posting the fourth-best goals against per game clip in MLS:

Last season, Turner's saves percentage of 74.8 ranked third among all MLS goalkeepers, while his winning percentage of 0.605 came in at fifth best. His reclaiming of the starting goalkeeper role coincided with New England's historic mid-season surge, as he started 19 of the team's last 22 matches en route to a postseason berth.

The Park Ridge, N.J. native was rewarded for his breakout 2019 campaign with two call-ups to the U.S. Men's National Team during the offseason. Turner received his first career call-up for the USMNT's pre-camp in No-vember, and earned a spot on the final roster for the team's final two Con-cacaf Nations League qualifying matches. Head Coach Gregg Berhalter again tabbed Turner for 2020 January Camp in Bradenton, Fla.

The Revolution, in conjunction with MLS WORKS, are teaming up to help Kick Childhood Cancer once again this season. Forward Gustavo Bou entered his first full MLS season eyeing MLS hard-ware after bursting onto the scene with nine goals and two assists in the second half of the 2019 campaign. 'La Pantera' joined the Revs last July on a club-record transfer fee from Liga MX side Club Tijuana and imme-diately established himself as one of the most lethal and efficient goal scorers in MLS.

Through the first 12 league games of 2020, Bou has contributed three goals with two assists, and 17 shots on goal - tied for second most in MLS. With Carles Gil sidelined, the Argentine has stepped into the captaincy and embraced a playmaking role. His 27 chances created are tied for fourth most league-wide:

Dating back to his debut on July 17, 2019, Bou's 12 goals from the run of play are tied for sixth most in MLS. He has appeared on the scoresheet with a goal or assist in half of his regular season appearances to date, and has showed a flair for the dramatic with four goals in the 85th minute or later.

Bou also leads all MLS players in shots (83) and shots on target (42) over that time span. In 2019, his goals scored per 90 minutes (0.70) and goals per game (0.64) clips were also among the MLS leaders across the entire season.

On Sept. 8, the Revolution reacquired midfielder Lee Nguyen from Inter Miami CF in exchange for the club's natural fourth-round pick in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft and up to $50,000 in General Allocation Money.

Nguyen has appeared in both of New England's matches upon his return, first logging 14 minutes as a substitute on Sept. 12 at Philadelphia, before playing 89 minutes on Saturday's draw vs. New York City.

The 33-year old returns to Foxborough as one of the most productive play-ers in club history and a member of the Revolution’s All-Time Team. Since joining New England through the 2012 MLS Waiver Draft, Nguyen has re-corded 193 games played, 186 starts, 51 goals, and 49 assists with the club.

The Texas native is well represented in the Revolution’s record book, as he ranks among the top 10 in virtually every statistical category, including games played (10th), games started (7th), minutes played (8th), goals (3rd), assists (2nd), shots (3rd), shots on goal (3rd), and penalty kick goals (1st).

Nguyen is one of three Revolution players, along with Steve Ralston and Diego Fagundez, with at least 40 goals and 40 assists. With one more as-sist, he’ll become the first player in club history to reach 50 goals and 50 assists with the team. Fagundez is only five assists shy of the 50-50 mark.

Following in the wake of recent Revolution SuperDraft selections to make major impacts in their rookie seasons - including Brandon Bye, DeJuan Jones, and Tajon Buchanan - Henry Kessler has also fit right in at the pro-fessional level. Kessler has appeared in every game of his debut regular season to date and leads all 2020 MLS SuperDraft picks in games played (12), starts (nine), and minutes played (923).

Kessler, who is one of seven Revolution players to appear in all 12 regular season games, has quickly proved he is up to the task. The New York City native leads the Revolution in clearances with 51 and ranks second on the team with 17 interceptions.

The first-year center back earned the starting nod in each of the Revs' first two matches, slotting in alongside Andrew Farrell at center back in both games, and again started next to Farrell in clean sheet performances on July 21 vs. Toronto and Aug. 20 vs. Philadelphia. Kessler played in all three MLS is Back Tournament group stage matches, adding substitute appear-ances on July 9 vs. Montreal and July 17 vs. D.C. United.

A decorated college player at Virginia, Kessler was named a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist in 2019 after anchoring a Cavaliers back line that yielded only 0.53 goals per game, second lowest in the country, and posted NCAA bests with 15 shutouts and 21 wins.

Newcomer Adam Buksa has already established himself as an integral member of this Revolution squad in his first MLS campaign. Buksa has scored two goals, added an assist, and has appeared in all 13 games across all competitions.

In December, the Revolution acquired Buksa and signed the Polish strik-er to a Designated Player contract. Before making the move to MLS, he most recently featured for Polish top-flight side Pogón Szczecin, where he scored 22 goals in 52 appearances across all competitions. He captured Pogón's golden boot for the 2018-19 season after pacing the team with 11 goals.

The 6-foot-3 Buksa has showcased his aerial dominance on both ends of the field. His 36 aerial duels wons are most among all MLS forwards. Buksa's nine headed clearances are also tied for fifth most among MLS forwards this season.

TEAM NOTESTEAM NOTES

Revolution II, New England's new developmental team competing in its inaugural USL League One campaign, is serving as a valuable proving ground for the club's crop of rising talents. Through Revolution II's first 10 games, 19 players have made their professionald debuts with the team, including 12 current or former Academy products. Five first-team play-ers have earned minutes for Head Coach Clint Peay's side, including four Homegrown Players: Isaac Angking, Nicolas Firmino, Damian Rivera, and Justin Rennicks.

Firmino, 19, has started all 10 games thus far for Revolution II, primarily in a central midfield role, marking his first action at the professional level. The Somerville, Mass. product scored his first professional goal, which was also the first in team history, on Aug. 15 at North Texas SC, the open-ing strike in a 3-3 draw. He added another goal to cap off a 2-0 win at Union Omaha on Sept. 19.

Rennicks, 21, earned his first League One start on Sept. 16 at FC Tucson, playing 70 minutes in the 1-0 defeat. He scored his first goal - the eventu-al game-winner - for Revs II in his second start with the team on Sept. 19 at Omaha. The South Hamilton, Mass. resident is expected to remain on loan with Revs II for the remainder of the League One campaign.

Angking, 20, has started five games for Revs II in his third professional season before being sidelined with an injury. His two-goal performance on Aug. 15 at North Texas SC earned him a spot on the USL Team of the Week. In his MLS career, the Providence, R.I. product has made three MLS appearances since 2018.

Rivera, 17, is most recent Academy graduate to advance to the MLS side. He made his pro debut with with Revs II on Aug. 7 vs. Orlando City B, play-ing 70 minutes and recording a team-high four shots, with one on target. The Cranston, R.I. native has made eight total appearances and five starts for Revs II this season.

On July 8, the Revolution acquired midfielder Matt Polster following his transfer from Scottish Premiership side Rangers FC. To secure Polster's MLS rights, the Revolution traded $100,000 in 2021 allocation money to Chicago Fire FC. Polster played 90 minutes in his Revs debut on Aug. 20 vs. Philadelphia, and has started each of the team's five games since. He missed Saturday's match vs. NYCFC after his ejection on Sept. 12 at Philadelphia.

Polster, 27, returns to MLS after a stint with Rangers FC, where he made 10 total appearances across the Scottish Premiership, Europa League, and Scottish League Cup action. He signed with Rangers in January 2019 following a successful trial and made six appearances in Scotland’s top flight. Before joining Rangers, the United States international made 82 MLS appearances across four seasons with Chicago Fire FC.

On Aug. 17, New England made a pair of trades -- adding forward Kekuta Manneh from FC Cincinnati in exchange for a 2020 international roster slot, and midfielder Tommy McNamara from Houston Dynamo in exchange for Wilfried Zahibo and a 2020 international roster slot.

Both players made New England's match day roster for the first time on Aug. 29 vs. New York. McNamara saw his debut in that match, playing 17 minutes as a substitute in the 1-1 draw. He has started each of the team's four matches since, and contributed his first assist with the Revolution on Teal Bunbury's game-winning goal on Sept. 6 at Chicago. Manneh made his debut in the Sept. 2 match vs. NYCFC, playing 23 minutes as a substitute on the right wing to mark his 150th MLS appearance.

Manneh joins the Revolution with seven seasons of MLS experience with FC Cincinnati (2019-20), Columbus Crew SC (2017), and Vancouver White-caps FC (2013-17), in addition to professional stints in Mexico, Switzerland, and his native The Gambia. The 25-year-old winger has made 150 regular season appearances in MLS, with 87 starts, and has scored 30 goals with 18 assists. Manneh, who became a U.S. citizen in 2016, was called into the United States Men's National Team's January Camp by Bruce Arena in 2017.

McNamara, 29, is currently in his seventh MLS season and second with the Dynamo, having totaled 37 regular season appearances and 17 starts in Houston since 2019. Last year, the midfielder set a career high with 33 ap-pearances, making 15 starts, and scored two goals with three assists. For his MLS career, he owns 133 appearances, 92 starts, 16 goals, and 18 as-sists in league play, with one additional start in the 2016 MLS Cup Playoffs.

In September 2019, Bruce Arena became the second head coach in MLS history to eclipse 700 regular season points, joining the late Sigi Schmid (843). With an all-time regular season record of 213-127-103 (11-6-14 with New England), Arena who celebrated his 69th birthday on Monday, Sept. 21, ranks second in league history in regular season wins and points earned. He is also the league's all-time leader in postseason wins with 32.

While Arena has work ahead of him in order to catch Sigi Schmid on the all-time wins list, his five MLS Cup victories are unlikely to rivaled anytime soon, as no other active coach has more than two trophies under their belt. The only other active MLS coaches with MLS Cup wins are Bob Brad-ley (1998), Caleb Porter (2015), Brian Schmetzer (2016 & 2019), and Greg Vanney (2017).

BRUCE ARENA• Named the Revolution’s sporting director and the club’s eighth head coach on May 14, 2019. • Holds a record five MLS Cup titles (1996, 1997, 2011, 2012, 2014) and has amassed three MLS Supporters’ Shields (1996, 2010, 2011), tied for the most all time. • Currently the winningest active head coach in MLS and one of two coaches to reach 200 regular season MLS wins and 700 career points, holding a 213-127-103 record (718 pts.) in MLS. • Holds MLS Cup Playoffs record with 32 postseason wins and 50 games coached. • Managed the U.S. Men’s National Team during two separate stints (1998-2006, 2016-17), appearing in both the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, and winning three Gold Cup titles. • Built a dynasty over 18 seasons as head coach at the University of Virginia, winning five NCAA Division-1 National Championships and six ACC titles. • Coached the New York Red Bulls from 2006-07, before serving as the LA Galaxy head coach from 2008-16, where he won three MLS Cups in 2011, 2012, and 2014.

Bruce Arena is currently in his second season as Sporting Director and Head Coach of the New England Revo-lution after his appointment to the position on May 14, 2019. The five-time MLS Cup winner is the eighth head coach in club history and oversees all soccer operations for the New England Revolution, including head coach-ing duties, roster management, scouting, and the oversight of Revolution II and the Revolution Academy.

A native of Long Island, N.Y. native, Arena joined the Revolution with one of the most decorated coaching careers in American soccer history that has spanned more than 40 seasons at the collegiate, professional, and interna-

tional levels. Arena’s MLS resume includes a record five MLS Cup titles, three Supporters’ Shields, seven conference championships, one U.S. Open Cup title, and one Concacaf Champions' Cup across 14 seasons. Arena has earned three MLS Coach of the Year selections, tied for the most all-time, first winning the honor in 1997 with D.C. United before being recognized in 2009 and 2011 with the LA Galaxy.

With a regular season career record of 213-127-103 (.597), Arena is the winningest active head coach in MLS, and is one of two coaches in league history to have surpassed 200 regular season wins and 700 career points, along with Sigi Schmid. He is tied with Schmid for the all-time in MLS Cup Playoff games coached at 50 (32-12-6), while his 32 playoff wins are the most in league history.

Arena made his return to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs in 2019 by leading one of the most remarkable turnarounds in league history. After a 2-8-2 start had the Revolution sitting in last place in MLS by mid-May, Arena went unbeaten in his first eight games at the helm beginning on June 2, becoming only the fourth head coach to do begin a tenure with such a streak in MLS history. New England finished the season with an 8-3-8 mark and claimed the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference, before falling to Atlanta United FC in Round One of the postseason. That turnaround came despite Arena only making one addition to the roster, bring-ing in Argentine striker Gustavo Bou via a club-record transfer in July.

On the international stage, Arena, 69, coached the U.S. Men’s National Team over two separate stints from 1998-2006 and 2016-17, amassing the most wins in the program’s history with a record of 81-35-32. He led the Stars and Stripes to a Quarterfinal finish in the 2002 FIFA Men’s World Cup – the country's best showing since 1930 – as well an appearance in the 2006 FIFA Men’s World Cup. Arena also guided the U.S. Men's National Team to more Gold Cup titles than any other coach, capturing the continental trophy three times in 2002, 2005, and 2017.

Before his time in the professional ranks, Arena began his head coaching career with one season at the University of Puget Sound (1976), before being named the head coach at the University of Virginia in 1978. During his decorated 18-year tenure at Virginia, he led the Cavaliers to five NCAA Division-1 National Champion-ships, including four in a row from 1991-94, as well as six ACC Men’s Soccer titles (1988, 1991-95). While at Virginia, Arena coached a number of American soccer legends, including Claudio Reyna, John Harkes, and current D.C. United Head Coach Ben Olsen.

In 1996, Arena received an offer to lead the United States Under-23 Men’s National Team in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Shortly after the Olympics, he assumed the head role with D.C. United, where he led the Black-and-Red to a 61-35 record, including the first two MLS Cup titles in 1996 and 1997, and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title in 1996.

Following the 1998 FIFA Men’s World Cup in France, the United States Soccer Federation turned to Arena, who helped the team qualify for the 2002 FIFA Men’s World Cup. In the tournament, Arena’s team recorded an impressive win over powerhouse Portugal and topped Mexico, 2-0, in the Round of 16 en route to the nation’s first appearance in the Quarterfinals in a 72-year span. That same year, Arena led the USMNT to the Concacaf Gold Cup title, one of his three triumphs in the competition.

In 2005, Arena won his second Concacaf Gold Cup ahead of the 2006 FIFA Men’s World Cup in Germany. In the 2006 tournament, the United States earned a 1-1 draw against Italy, but a 2-1 defeat to Ghana sent the USMNT home early.

The next season, Arena took charge of the New York Red Bulls, where he spent the end of the 2006 season and all of the 2007 campaign. In 2008, Arena joined the LA Galaxy for what would be an incredible nine-year tenure that included three MLS Cups in a four-year span and two Supporters’ Shields in 2010 and 2011.

Following his decorated career with the Galaxy, Arena rejoined the U.S. Men’s National Team in November 2016. In his second run as head coach, he lost only two out of 18 games at the helm, though the United States fell short of qualification for the 2018 FIFA Men’s World Cup.

A 2010 National Soccer Hall of Fame inductee, Arena was named the 2015 Werner Fricker Builder Award recipient, earning U.S. Soccer’s highest honor for his more than 40 years of service to the game.

A talented lacrosse player, Arena grew up on Long Island and would go on to attend Nassau Community College, where he played both lacrosse and soccer. Arena then transferred to Cornell University in 1971, where as a goalkeeper, he led his team to the 1972 NCAA College Cup Final Four and earned the tournament’s Most Valuable Defensive Player award. During the 1973 season, Arena contributed as an assistant coach with Cornell, before then accepting a head coaching position at the University of Puget Sound.

Off the field, Arena has authored a number of books and is a member of the NJCAA Lacrosse Hall of Fame, after receiving induction in 2008. He and his wife, Phyllis, live in Boston. Arena’s son, Kenny, was an assistant coach under his father with the LA Galaxy from 2014-16, before joining the staff of Los Angeles FC in 2018, where he currently serves as an assistant coach.

He led Kansas City for two-and-a-half seasons, compiling a 27-29-22 record, and helped the club reach the postseason twice, including a West-ern Conference Finals appearance in 2007. In December 2009, Onalfo was named head coach of D.C. United, where he would remain for eight months before departing the club.

After starring for Ridgefield High School, Onalfo played collegiately for Bruce Arena at the University of Virginia from 1987-1990. In four seasons with the Cavaliers, he earned a pair of All-ACC First Team selections and helped the team win the 1988 ACC Championship. He began his profes-sional career with French side La Ciotat in 1991, before featuring for the Connecticut Wolves of the USISL from 1994-95, and Mexican second divi-sion side Tampico Madero in 1995.

Onalfo was selected by the LA Galaxy in the inaugural MLS Draft and would make 13 appearances for the club in 1996, helping it reach the first ever MLS Cup. The defender went on to register 23 appearances across four seasons in MLS, spending additional time with San Jose (1997) and D.C. United (1998-99). He recorded one international cap with the U.S. Men's National Team and featured extensively at the youth level, including the 1989 FIFA World Youth Championship, the 1991 Pan American Games, and the 1992 Summer Olympics.

Onalfo’s journey took a detour soon after the 1992 Olympics, when a diag-nosis of stage three Hodgkin’s disease at the age of 24 disrupted his ca-reer and nearly ended his life. After surviving his arduous battle with can-cer, Onalfo resumed his playing career with Connecticut and then Mexican side Tampico FC, before joining the Galaxy for the inaugural MLS season.
