I again hope this issue of our newsletter finds you safe and in good health. I’m sure it has been a challenge to shelter in place and keep social distance. As humans, we naturally yearn for contact with our friends and family, so it can be disheartening to forgo that contact.

It may, however, be a blessing in disguise for me. I’m having a knee replaced next week and will be hobbled up for a couple of months in recovery. So I’d probably be pretty useless at our Macchug meetings.

Based on what I’ve heard from the county (who owns the Vet’s Hall), and just like much of the sports world, it looks like our Macchug season is over. Hopefully, we’ll be able to have a fresh start in September. I certainly look forward to that possibility

Affinity Publisher Review: The best dang desktop publishing app aroundJeffery Battersby - 26 Feb 2020

Affinity Publisher is a $50 professional desktop publishing and page layout package created by Serif and designed to create high-end publication-quality documents. It is meant to be used in conjunction with Affinity Designer, Serif's graphic design application, and Affinity Photo, Serif's photo editing application, each of which costs $50.

While this review will focus on Affinity Publisher, the beauty of the relationship between these three applications is Studio Link which, if you also have Affinity Designer and Photo installed, means you never need to leave Affinity Publisher to access all the features of the other two applications. Studio Link does this using "personas," which allow you to click a button appearing at the top left of the Publisher toolbar, to access all of the selected app's tools. So,

Good morning iPhone users…….

Are you surviving? I think there’s hope in the future. We can now get toilet paper, disinfectant wipes, and masks. Chico and the surrounding towns are opening up with special instructions with CDC guidelines. I still haven’t had a haircut in 2 months. How about you? Don’t even ask about my toenails! I do the best I can and I’m sure you are struggling too. Fortunately, our area has not had many COVID deaths, but we still need to be cautious about the possible spreading the virus without knowing. I do miss you and will be glad we can meet in person….hopefully in September when restrictions have been lifted.

Since we can’t meet, I’ll share with you some of the tips I found that you might enjoy. Call me if you have some special interest or concern about using your phone. Be safe and responsible. Kathy at 530-514-8099.

TIPS for the iPhone:

1. Your headphone can capture your photos

Yes, if those shaky hands fail to capture good photos, you can use the volume up and down buttons on your headphone to do the work for you. Here’s how to capture an iPhone photo with your Apple Ear Pods or older earbuds.

a) Plug your Apple earbuds into your iPhone.

b) Launch the Camera app.

c) Choose a photo subject and steady your hand.

d) Use either the volume up or down button on your earbud cable to capture the photo.

2. Shake and Undo

Why to bother fingers to delete a written text! Shake your iPhone and Undo typing to delete your message. Changed your mind? Shake again and tap on Redo typing to get the original message back.

3. Save your data by deleting it

Do you know the iPhone feature that automatically deletes its data if an incorrect passcode is entered 10 times in a row? Sounds good, right? Simply follow these steps to enable this feature:

A) Start the Settings app on your iPhone

B) Scroll down and tap Face ID & Passcode

C) Enter your passcode

D) Switch on Erase Data

4. Set timer for Music

Don’t you sometimes fall asleep before turning off the music?

Here’s how your Clock can set a timer to turn off anything you’re watching or listening to on your iPhone and iPad:

a) Start the clock app on your iPhone

b) Tap on Timer tab located at the bottom of the screen

c) Choose the length of time

d) Tap on When Timer Ends.

e) Scroll down and tap Stop Playing.

f) Tap Set in the upper right hand corner of the display

How to Change Your Apple ID Email and Create an Email Alias

Apple has an account page where you can change your Apple email address, as well as other aspects of your account. But there’s a caveat.Change Your Apple Email With this tip we’re going to appleid.apple.com, which is the account management page.

1. Right at the top you’ll find the Account section. Click Edit next to your email.

2. Under your Apple ID you’ll see an option to Change Apple ID.

3. Enter the email you want to use, then click Continue.

Your former Apple ID email will then become an additional email address for your account.

Here’s the warning. If you change it to an Apple email address like @icloud.com, @mac.com, or @me.com, you can’t change it to a third party email address again. However, you can change it to an alias of your Apple address. Click here for more

How to Use to Apple Music on The Web

After numerous fan concepts and a beta version, a fully functional, official web version of Apple Music is now available. It means you can access your playlists, libraries, and exclusive content in your browser.

Apple Music Web PlayerTo access it, head to https://music.apple.com. When you’re there, tap Sign In in the top right-hand corner. Log in using your Apple ID and your entire library is there for you. Because this is an official offering, all the extra content – playlists, video interviews etc – is also available. An individual Apple Music subscription costs $9.99 a month. Student and family subscriptions are available for $4.99 and $14.99 per month respectively.

One last thing: Since I’m the facilitator for the Apple Watch Special Interest Group, I’d like to pass along a tip that I should have thought of initially.

The current version of Watch OS is 6.2.6, which was released recently as an update to plug a vulnerability hole in the operating system. When my update was complete, it would no longer “communicate” with my iPhone. It wouldn’t ding or vibrate or show

any notification when a text or email arrived. All it would basically do is tell time…how fundamental!

Kathy and I spent an hour trying everything we could think of to figure out why that had happened…to no avail. Even Google couldn’t help.

So, you wonder, how did I finally fix the problem? Simple, I just restarted my Apple Watch and, voila, everything was fine. How crazy is that.

The moral to this short story…if all else fails, restart your device.

How to print from iPhone or iPad

Apple introduced its AirPrint feature to the scene about a decade ago. This allows you to print items from your iPhone or iPad to a printer on your Wi-Fi network without any additional software. So if you’ve recently purchased an AirPrint-enabled printer, you’ll obviously need to know how to print from your iOS device. While the exact process for accessing the print option can differ for third-party apps, it’s pretty much the same for the Apple apps on your device.

Make sure your devices are ready

Again, you’ll need to have a compatible printer and can check the Apple Support site for AirPrint-enabled printers.

Next, make sure that your iPhone or iPad and your printer are on the same Wi-Fi

Netflix, iPlayer, Now TV, Disney Plus… we’re not exactly short of options when it comes to streaming services, but if you want to cancel your subscription and prevent Apple from automatically taking £4.99 out of your account, you have to cancel your Apple TV Plus subscription before your free trial is due to end. Here’s how to go about it. 

But first, there’s something important that you need to know. Unlike Disney Plus and Netflix, you can’t cancel your Apple TV Plus free trial in advance. Apple will end it as soon as you hit the cancel button, rather than bringing it to a close exactly seven days after your free trial started.

So if you’ve still got a couple of days left before your free trial is due to end, you might want to wait a bit longer before undertaking the cancellation process. Don’t leave it too long though, or else you’ll get charged!

Apple promotes child-friendly TV shows and movies available to watch on Apple TV+Christian Zibreg on May 25, 2020

Apple yesterday released a new video commercial that promotes child-friendly original series and films “to inspire the next generation of dreamers, explorers and believers.”

The 30-second video advertisement, released through the company’s official Apple TV+ channel on YouTube, pitches Apple TV+ as a kids-friendly streaming service, showcasing shows and movies such as “Helpsters”, “Ghost Writer” and “Snoopy in Space.”

Focused on family entertainment, Apple TV+ brings several TV shows and movies that are either purely focused on children or are child-friendly at the very least.

Some of the Apple TV+  shows, movies and documentaries that appeal to children include “Helpsters”, “Ghost Writer”, “Snoopy in Space”, “Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock Rock On!”, “Amazing Stories”, “Here We Are: Notes For Living on Planet Earth”, “The Elephant Queen” and more.

GroceryGrocery has evolved into much more than a simple Reminders-based grocery list app. In the last update that I covered, the app gained meal planning and recipe support. Now, it has added a Households feature that lets users share stores, meal plans, and food inventories with others in their household. The feature requires a Grocery Premium subscription, but one subscription allows everyone in your household to enjoy the app's premium features. With more cooking happening at home these days, you can't go wrong with Grocery's tools that can now manage everything from planning meals to cooking them.

OvercastOvercast was updated this week to change the way it syncs podcast episodes to the Apple Watch. Previously, transfers occurred over Bluetooth when the Watch was charging, which was slow. Now, episodes sync directly over WiFi or cellular and can stream over both. The upside is that syncing is more reliable and iPhone battery drain is reduced. The downside, however, is that the update means Voice Boost and Smart Speed are not available when listening to episodes via an Apple Watch.

In my testing, the trade-off is well worth it. In the past, it wasn't unusual to find that a podcast episode I wanted to listen to when I left for a run hadn't synced to my Watch yet. Since the update, that hasn't been an issue. The subset of my favorite shows that I keep synced to my Watch is usually there already, and the couple of times an episode was too new to have synced yet, I had no trouble streaming it over cellular.

All day my parents have been screaming about how to organize old photos that have been avalanching in our garage and closet. My family lineage is built upon a love of photography, sentimentality, and hoarding, so we’re talking upon boxes and boxes upon boxes of black-and-whites, faded polaroids, a framed pin-up shot of my YiaYia for some reason. It’s an exhausting process that needs a lotta hand-holding, but if you also have an overload of photos, now’s a great time to go through them.

Why? Well, if you’re feeling distraught and claustrophobic during this time, the  is a natural way to lift your mood. But more than that, giving a sense of order and a place to access those feel-good memories allows us to feel in control and soothed all at once.

“In times of rapid unexpected change or stressful chaos, having an orderly place is comforting, as it reminds us that we can remain together despite the turmoil we sense around us,” says licensed psychologist . “It demonstrates that we have an active role in interpreting the meaning and purpose of our lives. Quickly Remove Backgrounds From Your Pictures With This App

iOS: It’s easy to find guides on blurring or removing photo backgrounds online, but almost all of them require a desktop and image editing software. iOS users, however, can do it right on their phones using the PhotoRoom app.

The app automatically blurs backgrounds so you can get that portrait mode effect, even on devices that don’t normally have the feature. It also lets you crop out the background entirely and replace it with other images, almost like a green screen. The custom backgrounds can

actually look pretty convincing thanks to the app’s built-in tools for adjusting shadows and adding other graphical elements—stuff you’d normally use Photoshop or GIMP for—and PhotoRoom is much easier to use.

PhotoRoom is available for free on the iOS store, and an Android version and web app are also in development. Images edited with the free version will display a watermark logo, but you can remove it by upgrading to the premium version for $9.49/month, or $46.99/year.

Once you’ve installed Tripsy, it’s easy to create your first trip. You can set a name for it, the date, the local time zone, and even a custom photo to get started. From there, you can add new activities to your trip, such as the flights you will take, the hotel you will stay at, and the places you are planning to visit.

Widgets might be coming to iPhone, and they’re demonstrated in this iOS 14 concept.

iOS 14 will supposedly include Home screen widgets, and a concept artist dreamed up a design. His short video is sure to excite anyone who’s ready for their iPhone’s main screen to become more dynamic and informative.

The iOS 14 concept created by Aleksey Bondarev shows how an applications icon could expand into a widget on command. And the designer shows a number of examples. Useful weather information, the number of recent Instagram likes, and upcoming calendar events could all be shown on an iOS Home screen with widgets.

“Some applications are so simple and can display all the basic information before opening,” said Bondarev. “I find this an interesting addition to the main screen, but I also think it will be a little difficult for developers.”

It seems like everyone is Zooming these days, and one of the reasons for that is that Zoom is very easy to set up and use, and it works on a variety of platforms.

But some features on some platforms are more complicated and convoluted to set up than others. And one of those is screen sharing on iOS.

Here's how to enable this Zoom feature in iOS.

First, you need to add the screen recording feature to the Control Center, and this is best to do before you're in the middle of a meeting.

To do this, head over to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls. Find Screen Recording and tap + next to it.

OK, with that setup, you're ready to share your screen.

To share your screen from within a Zoom meeting, kick off the process by clicking on Share Screen and choosing Screen. If this is the first time you've tried this, Zoom will give you instructions on how to add Screen Recording to Control Center, which you can now skip.

If you’re using an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or the iCloud.com website, you can access and edit entire folders of files with other Apple device owners via iCloud.

This updated sharing feature requires at least iOS 13.4 on iPhone, iPadOS 13.4 on iPad, or macOS Catalina 10.15.4. If you’re using a previous version of these operating systems, you can only share files individually. Once you upgrade, the entire folder can be shared in one shot.

On iOS/iPadOS, go to Settings > General > Software Update. Your device will either tell you that your software is up to date or it will download the latest version of the operating system. On your Mac, click the Apple icon and select About this Mac. If the version number says 10.5.4 or higher, you’re set. If not, click the button for Software Update to install the latest version.

Apple/Zoom Video CommunicationsSpeaking for myself and seemingly everyone I know, we are all on Zoom, FaceTime, Teams, Hangouts, Meet, Webex, or some other videoconferencing tool all the time, whether for paid work, volunteering and nonprofit involvement, the PTA, or socializing and family conversation.

Unless you’ve got an iMac and it’s set up in the right place, you might find yourself squinting to see everyone on screen—or leaning in or balancing a laptop on your lap. It’s distracting for you and anyone with whom you’re conversing.

There’s a better way, if you have an Apple TV or a newer TV that supports video streaming over AirPlay 2: you can use AirPlay or AirPlay 2 to stream your Mac, iPhone, or iPad’s screen to the TV. If you purchase an HDMI adapter for a Mac or a mobile device, you can instead hardwire yourself into any TV with a spare HDMI port.

Set up your device relative to the TV setIf you’re using the built-in webcam in your Mac, iPhone, or iPad, you need to set it up in such a way that you’re looking at least mostly in the direction of its camera. It’s often hard to place a devices safely above a TV set, so you might want to position it on a surface just in front of the TV.

Looking past the device, to other people it looks like you’re looking into the camera—and at them—instead of off to the side.
