1:1 MeetingsOnce a term you will have a one to one meeting with your PDC as a chance to formally catch-up and discuss your whole college experience. This is invaluable in the first couple of months as you settle in to the new college and adjust to the routines, expectations, workload and culture of the Sixth Form.

There is a structured programme of careers provision throughout

your time at Sixth Form including many exciting opportunities, such as

visits and one-to-ones with universities and employers, mock interviews and

individual guidance discussions. We have a dedicated in house careers manager who runs a whole year service, which drives the

widest level of participation.

Our careers activity adheres to the eight Gatsby Benchmarks of good career guidance and we are currently working

University ProgressionA Levels are regarded as the gold standard qualification for entry to university and many of our students ultimately progress to Higher Education. We have excellent links with universities across the entire country. who run subject specific talks and visits, as well as attending our annual Higher Education Fair (which is scheduled in the first term of the new academic year) and we also strongly encourage students to visit university open and taster days, to confirm their choices.

In their first year, eligible students can apply for Higher Education access schemes such as:

Realising Opportunities - Social Mobility Foundation - Bitesize Uni - Sutton Trust NU Entry - Nuffield Work Placements.

We also encourage all first year students to sign up for work experience opportunities, gain voluntary work, engage with college-led activities and further explore their areas of interest. Enrichment takes place throughout the year in a variety of different formats. Every week in the first year at college Enrichment forms a highly useful additional way of engaging our students socially and bringing them together in a range of activities which are designed to appeal to their natural interests.

Within subjects, enrichment opportunities are built in to the course and might include a visit to a local university, the opportunity to take part in a national competition or visits from guest speakers.

On Wednesday afternoon, Enrichment is a compulsory timetabled activity for all first year students. A wide range of activities are available to choose from in the following groups:

BURSARYThe Newcastle Sixth Form College Bursary provides eligible students with up to £1,200 support a year, to subsidise travel, subsistence and study related costs.

To qualify for our bursary scheme you will need to complete an application during enrolment. The bursary is available to students who meet the qualifying criteria which includes:

To be living in a household with an income of £25,000 or under.

The Newcastle Sixth Form College bursary will be available from September 2020, and is provided only on application. Some students may be eligible for the 16-19 Government Funded Bursary and/or including Free College Meals. The bursary scheme will be available from August 2020.

ART, CRAFT AND DESIGN

ModulesYou will produce practical and critical/contextual work in two or more areas of study, for example, Fine Art, 3D design, Photography, Graphics or Textile design.

Component 1: (Personal investigation)You will develop work for a personal investigation into an idea, issue, concept or theme supported by written material of 1000-3000 words.

Component 2: (Externally set assignment - 15 hours supervised time)You will produce personal work in response to one of eight exciting starting points.

ProgressionIn general, we find that any art subject broadens your horizons and helps with time management, research, creative and analytical skills, communicating in both written and visual forms, as well as with close observation and awareness of current affairs.

You could progress to a Foundation Studies diploma in Art and Design, a Foundation Degree, Higher National Diploma or BA Honours Degree.

Studying an Art and Design related degree at University can give you all sorts of exciting career options, including traditional fine art, art restoration, community arts, illustration, lecturing/teaching, as well as animation, graphic design, games design, fashion and textile design. In combination with other subjects it could be useful for architecture and art therapy alongside many other careers.

OverviewYou will be introduced to a range of traditional and new media, including contextual history of Art, Craft and Design. Your skills will be enhanced through research, the development of ideas and working from first-hand experience. You will develop practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding of relevant materials, processes, and ways of conveying ideas, feelings and meanings.

BIOLOGYOverviewBiology is the study of all living things. You will look at how individual molecules interact with each other, how they form tissues, organs and organisms and how these organisms interact with their environment on a global scale. Studying biology will develop your understanding of the living world and enable you to explore the applications and implications of this living science.

To succeed in A Level Biology, you will need a sound understanding of the concepts covered in GCSE Dual Award or Triple Science. It does not matter if you have completed GCSE Dual Award (Core and Additional) or GCSE separate Sciences.

CHEMISTRYOverviewChemistry attempts to answer the big question: What is everything made from? It’s the search for this answer that makes this subject so fascinating. From investigating how one substance can be changed drastically into another, to researching a new wonder drug to save millions of lives, the opportunities that chemistry provides are endless.

ModulesChemistry is split up into three major sections:

• Physical Chemistry which involves quantifying properties including amount of substance calculations, rates of reaction, behaviours of gases, equilibrium, thermodynamics and more. • Organic Chemistry is the chemistry of living things and discusses reactions of alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, esters, carbonyl chemistry, aromatic compounds, DNA and biological molecules. As well as how to analyse the compounds we learn to synthesise. • Inorganic Chemistry is the study of all non-carbon elements. Whilst studying it you will learn about why chemicals are coloured, how different groups behave and more.

ProgressionStudying a chemistry related degree at university gives you all sorts of exciting career options including; analytical chemist, chemical engineer, clinical biochemist, pharmacologist, doctor, research scientist, toxicologist, environmental consultant.

DRAMA AND THEATREOverviewThis subject is ideal for you if you have an avid interest in performing or theatre design. You should have a passion for attending live theatre, as well as practically exploring drama and theatre. Our department promotes an immersive, visceral approach, looking specifically at creating theatre for a modern contemporary audience. You will explore this approach practically and theoretically to gain a holistic understanding and appreciation of how theatre is developed from a performers, directors and designers perspective.

ModulesComponent 1: DevisingUsing one key extract from a performance text and a theatre practitioner as stimuli students will devise an original performance piece. Performer or designer routes available.

Component 2: Text in PerformanceStudents will produce a group performance of one key extract from a performance text and a monologue or duologue performance from one key extract from a different performance text.

Component 3: Theatre Makers in PracticeSection A: Live Theatre Evaluation - an exploration and evaluation of live theatre seen by students.Section B: Page to Stage: Realising a Performance Text - practical exploration and study of a complete performance text, focusing on how this can be realised for performance.Section C: Interpreting a Performance Text - practical exploration and interpretation of a complete performance text, focusing on a chosen theatre practitioner and how the text could be reimagined for a contemporary audience.

ProgressionThe creative economy in the UK is big business, comprising of over 3 Million UK jobs (www.thecreativeindustries.co.uk 2018). Communication and inter-personal skills acquired through drama are becoming increasingly sought by employers and these skills are transferable to many different careers. You could work in the theatre or performing arts industry, either on stage or in one of the many backstage roles such as theatre management, marketing, lighting, directing, arts funding, costume and staging.

ProgressionEconomics is unique in that it can be both a Humanities and a Science subject at university, depending on the subjects it is combined with at A Level. You could progress to study a degree in Business and Finance, or Economics, but please note – Economics degrees usually require A Level Mathematics. Typical careers include investment banking, accountancy, stock market trader, data analyst, or a management role.

OverviewEconomics will engage you critically with real world issues and give you the opportunity to apply your economic knowledge and skills to issues in the world around you. A good economist is an independent thinker and someone who recognises the relevance of the subject in understanding the wider global events and how they affect us all.

ENGLISH LANGUAGEOverviewEnglish Language offers the opportunity to develop your knowledge, understanding and appreciation of language in use and to consider some critical language debates. Together, the creative writing and language investigation components give you the opportunity to develop your particular language specialisms. For example, students interested in journalism might select to write newspaper articles for their coursework, followed by journalism for their investigation.

• The structure of English• Regional and global forms of English• Child language development• The history of the English Language• Exploring how aspects of our identity (such as gender identity) are reflected in the language we use• The key characteristics of different ‘types’ of English (such as instant messaging, journalism, advertising etc)

It is a subject which has transferable skills and those who study English Literature have a wide range of career opportunities including content writing, advertising and marketing, alongside opportunities in the arts and culture sector.

OverviewEnglish Literature allows students to read widely and independently and engage with texts critically and creatively. You will develop your knowledge of literary analysis which will enable you to develop your own critical voice by exposing you to key authors and critics, and the way such writers have responded to texts and contexts.

ProgressionA Level Film Studies will not automatically offer a career in film, TV or journalism. Practical work experience is often the way forward, usually starting as a runner or getting involved with other local film makers and production companies to build a portfolio of work and industry contacts. Students wishing to pursue a career in the film/media industry are encouraged to seek out work experience placements. Past students have gained work experience on ITV crime drama Vera and the 2012 film The Liability, both of which were shot locally. At University level you have a choice of courses, some with a theory bias and others providing more practical training for working in the media.

ModulesComponent 1: Media Products, Industries and AudiencesThis module explored media language, representation, media industries, audiences and media contexts. Students will assess media language and representation and contexts in relation to different media forms: advertising, marketing, music video, radio, video games or newspapers.

Component 2: Media Forms and Products in DepthYou will study three media forms in depth, exploring all areas of the theoretical framework - media language, representation, media industries, and audiences - in relation to set products, which include television, magazines, blogs and websites.

Component 3: Cross-Media ProductionStudents will undertake research into genre, existing products and audience to create a media text according to a brief, which will be accompanied by an evaluation.

SOCIOLOGYOverviewSociology is a social science concerned with the study of human social relationships and the various ways these relationships are patterned in terms of social groups, organisations and societies.
