20th December - 4th Sunday of Advent

"God’s heart has a special place for the poor,

so much so that he himself “became poor”.

The entire history of our redemption is marked

by the presence of the poor. Salvation came to

us from the “yes” uttered by a lowly maiden from

a small town on the fringes of a great empire.”

For more information on the ongoing

work of Fr. Mike’s religious order

C O N F E S S I O N S : As we are not allowed to use the confessional there is no scheduled time for

confessions. Fr. Mike is willing to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance by appointment during the week.

This will have to be face to face with social distancing. Depending on the time the place will be by mutual

agreement (on the sanctuary or in the sacristy). Please phone Fr. Mike or see him at mass times.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK: There are restrictions on what the priest can do (he is not tied down to

everything as he is regarded as a front line worker by the government). To go to a sick person involves a lot of

“before” and “after” preparation. He is not allowed to touch the sick person but anoints with a cotton

bud with fresh oil blessed individually each time and disposed of separately. He has to use apron, mask

and gloves. Afterwards he has to sanitise the pyx (the box that carries the host), any booklets he used and

also his car when he returns. He must also change his clothes and wash them or not use for many days.

However, please note someone in serious danger of dying he would try to attend but please

try and notify him with as much warning as possible because of all the preparation involved.

Shine a light of hope

this Christmas...

http://www.acnuk.org/

SVDP This Christmas our SVDP is supporting the “Love in a Box” initiative. Love in a Box supports vulnerable children by providing Christmas presents to children in Clackmannanshire who might otherwise have nothing to open on Christmas Day. Due to Covid there is a greater need than ever to support children and young people. Referrals come from Social Work, schools and health professionals. We have donated items such as pyja-mas, books and toiletries to the value of £117. We would like to thank parishioners for their continued support which enables us to provide much needed support to those in need within our community.

Page 3: 2020 Fourth Sunday of Adventstbernadettes/current... · 2020. 12. 18. · to be close to us; it frees us from our solitude and gives us hope.” (Pope Francis@pontiflex) ATTENTION;

“To pray is to light a candle in the darkness. #Prayer rouses us from the tepidness of a purely horizontal existence, lifts our

gaze to higher things, makes us attuned to the Lord, allows God to be close to us; it frees us from our solitude and gives us hope.”

(Pope Francis@pontiflex)

ATTENTION; CHRISTMAS MASSES.

PLEASE DO NOT COME TO ONE OF THE MASSES IF YOU HAVE NOT REGISTERED.

You can check beforehand if there are spaces when the church is open at one of the daily

9.30am masses. It is unfortunate we do not have sufficient space. The last thing we want

to do is turn people away but we must follow government guidelines.

It is better to be safe than sorry with possible devastating consequences.

People are welcome to attend many of the other masses over the Christmas period.

Please check the parish diary. Of course there are many YouTube options from all over the

world but also from our parish on YouTube Live- St Bernadettes Parish Tullibody.

There is no religious obligation just now. Of course the true sense of Christmas is not just

one day so please consider other days. Just in case you cannot register for one of the

masses but would like to visit the church we will leave the church open for a visit between

the 8.30 am mass and the 11.30 am mass on Christmas day (please bring a mask).

On the Fourth Sunday of Advent

we light the last candle on our

Advent wreath, our preparation for

Christmas is almost finished.

We are about to receive the Saviour, Emmanuel, God with us.

God's only-begotten Son, born of the Father before all time,

God of God, light of light, true God of true God, one being

with the Father, is about to be born in time. For the salvation

of men, He has come down upon earth and is conceived by the Holy Ghost in a virgin. He

shall be called God with us, and yet He will be one in nature with us. He is to be like to us

in all things except sin. He wills to share our poverty and to pray and suffer with us; He as-

sumes our guilt. He is God with us in every phase of our life; He even takes our place on

the cross, He remains with us in Holy Communion, in our daily Mass, and in our tabernac-

les. At some time in the future He will still be God with us in His beautiful heaven.

All this He has done for us even though we have repeatedly turned our back on Him.

BLUES MASS: Merry Christmas, the joys of Christmas, parties, greetings from the more

than welcoming and noisy shops, smiles and greetings from unknown

passer byes, are all part of this intense period of merriment. However,

although celebrating Christmas with joy, for some Christmas also brings

the “blues”; memories and a sense of loss of a dear loved one now deceased;

a husband or wife, mum or dad, brother or sister, child, old friend, a tragic accident.

Such feelings should not be brushed aside and forgotten. They are important and are a part of who we

are. At this time we concentrate our energies around the happiness of others, especially children, and

perhaps do not permit ourselves to celebrate what has affected our own lives so deeply.

The parish of St. Bernadette’s invites you and your family to celebrate a special Christmas mass -

the “Blues Mass” especially for you to remember, during this Christmas season, someone loved, special,

important for you who has died. The death need not be recent but is not forgotten. Come and join us, to

celebrate this special mass where we can allow ourselves to be “low” but be lifted up

with hope and joy as we celebrate our belief in the Resurrection which begins with the

birth of the God-child Jesus at Christmas....

ATTENTION: Please note changes to mass times as of January 2021.

These changes have been introduced as a temporary measure while Mgr John is ill and to try and sup-

port his parish with sufficient masses. It is understood they will remain as long as necessary and as long

as Fr. Mike and Fr. Brian are able. All parish communities are aware this is a difficult time, complicated

even more by the coronavirus and the shortage of priests. We are confident parishes will be sensitive to

each other’s needs and that at times flexibility and quick adaptation may be required on behalf of every-

body. Please note mass times will probably be cancelled on days of requiem masses and school masses.

Changes are from 1st January 2021 All weekday masses in St. Bernadette’s will change to 9 am.

Week day masses at St. Mungo’s at 10 am on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Wednesday at 7pm.

Weekday mass at St. Serf’s, High Valleyfield on Monday’s at 11.30 am (Fr. Brian).

Fr. Mike will attend to funerals and look after Baptisms at St. Mungo’s.

COLLECTION FOR OUR ADVENT PROJECT

(JOINT PROJECT WITH St. MUNGO ’S ALLOA)

This year due to the pandemic we will try to help those in our

own immediate area who are struggling due to the pandemic.

During Advent and on Christmas day we will be collecting

food, goods and cash donations for “THE GATE” Foodbank.

COLLECTION BASKET FOR FOOD AT THE BACK OF THE CHURCH. CASH DONATION BUCKET AT EXIT DOOR.

PLEASE CONTRIBUTE IN ANY WAY YOU CAN

“EVERY LITTLE HELPS”

This is an opportunity to give a little of ourselves in whatever way we can to help others with greater

needs. We ask parents to take this opportunity to explain Christmas, how lucky children are receiving

presents, that we thank God for our blessings and share with those in need.....

Please read and explain thoroughly to our children.

“These days there is a lot of poverty in the world, and that's a scandal when we have so many riches and

resources to give to everyone. We all have to think about how we can become a little poorer.” - (Pope Francis)

Information from “THE GATE”.

• Covid has brought about significant changes in the circumstances of many people.

Furlough reduced earnings and loss of employment have all played part in an

increase of requests for assistance.

• By the end of September this year, requests for assistance had already exceeded the

total for the whole of 2019. The number of people assisted has increased by 60% and

the number of food parcels supplied has gone up by 40%.

• Not only is the number of people requiring assisted up, but the composition has changed.

Pre Covid, 60% of cases were single people + 40% were families.

That has now changed to 40% single + 60% families.

• The Food Bank has now concentrated its efforts in assisting individuals and families in

Alloa, Tullibody and Clackmannan.

(Other groups / bodies are now operating in the Hillfoots area)

The Food Bank is also working closely with Clackmannanshire Council on Covid support work.
