Dear Residents,It goes without saying that since our Winter/Spring and Summer 2020 Berwyn Park District Program Guides, our community has experienced tremendous, unprecedented change in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 has significantly reshaped our daily routines, causing us to think, act and live differently for our collective health and safety. I am grateful to our staff, residents and stakeholders in our community that have adapted to our State’s social distancing and face covering requirements as these efforts have substantially reduced the spread of COVID-19.

As the COVID-19 pandemic evolves, however, one vital aspect of our community has not changed in the midst of great uncertainty: our steadfast Berwyn spirit. More than ever before, Berwyn is a community of neighbors that cares about, and takes care of each other – True Berwynners!

Our parks, playgrounds, programs and open spaces are part of what makes living in Berwyn so special. The Berwyn Park District has been a lifeline for our residents, serving as a much-needed respite to escape the anxiety and uncertainty brought about by the COVID-19 crisis.

Illinois entered Phase Four of the Restore Illinois plan on Friday, June 26. It might feel tempting to assume that we are on the cusp of being ‘back to normal,’ but I highly encourage you to continue to be diligent in protecting yourself and your fellow residents as COVID-19 restrictions continue to loosen.

Because of the seriousness of the current COVID-19 social distancing requirements and due to the abundance of concern for health and wellbeing of our community and staff please keep an eye on our website, social media and e-mail for any changes in our responses, programming or events. I’m grateful for our staff who have displayed innovative and insightful ways to pivot programs, events, and services to keep children, adults and senior citizens active, healthy, connected and engaged.

I would be remiss if I failed to congratulate our Assistant to the Executive Director, Mary Gail Corpus who recently retired from the Berwyn Park District. Mary Gail was the fabric that held much of the district together and after 22 years of service to our community I want to thank her for her service to our community. She will be dearly missed by all! I know we will continue to move forward with the mentorship that Mary Gail provided and we will continue to be an asset to the community.

Take time to enjoy YOUR Berwyn Park District, Where Park Meets City.

Mario J. Manfredini President, Board of Commissioners.

Children enrolled in AM and PM classes must be provided a lunch and drink daily.

LEARNING THROUGH PLAY IS OUR PHILOSOPHY. Play was once considered to be the opposite of education, but it is now regarded by early childhood specialists as the extraordinary educational process by which preschool children become introduced to a world filled with new and exciting discoveries. The ECRLP teachers’ primary concern is the preschool children’s needs. We encourage creative expression, socialization, interaction with peers and the development of a positive self-image.The ECRLP teachers are qualified in Early Childhood Education and devoted to lead children through this exciting and important period of education and development.

The Early Childhood Recreation Learning Program offers two all day programs to offer more options for families. The extra time spent in the classroom allows the children to expand upon their readiness skills for future education in preschool or kindergarten and provides an alternative for working parents with a safe, fun, and educational environment for their children.

The Proksa Park Garden Club is sponsored and funded by the Berwyn Park District. The club meets on the third Monday of the month in the Community Room at 3001 S. Wisconsin Ave at 6:30pm. Occasional special functions are held elsewhere and are posted on the Garden Club section of the Berwyn Park District website. Club members volunteer to help design, create and maintain several gardens in the park. These include a Butterfly Garden, a Native Plant Garden and several beds located by the tennis courts.

The club is always looking for new members to help maintain the gardens in Proksa Park! If you would like to help, contact Zak Kerby at 708-956-7870 or [email protected]. He will pass along your information to a club member and help get you started. Once a member, you can work on garden of your choice anytime the park is open!
