As home to multiple Top 100 Festival ranked events in Ontario, the Town of Aurora has events and festivals to celebrate just about every occasion. In 2019, Festivals and Events Ontario named Aurora’s Haunted Forest and Tree Lighting Ceremonies as two of the best events in Ontario. The Haunted Forest is an event that offers creepy forest walks at Halloween for kids (and adults) of all ages and scare-level.
The Tree Lighting Ceremony, now hosted in tandem with Aurora’s Christmas Market, is a magical and festive night full of singing, stories and – naturally – the lighting of the Town’s giant Christmas tree.
Aurora is also host to one of Ontario’s only night-time Santa Claus parades. Santa Under the Stars takes place every year near the end of November and sees Yonge Street lit up with floats, marching bands and the big man in red himself. Residents and visitors can also stop by the giant Menorah at Town Hall and enjoy delicious treats during the Menorah Lighting Ceremony.
Experience AuroraAs the festive season comes to a close, the Town offers a family-friendly New Year’s Eve event featuring free activities, games and crafts. Other seasonal events include the popular Easter Egg Hunt which is sold out every year so be sure to get your tickets early.
Winter isn’t the only time for special events in Aurora. The summer season kicks off with
the Aurora Chamber of Commerce Street Festival which has taken place every year on the first Sunday in June and draws 25-40,000 people every year. Yonge Street closes down from Murray
Street to Wellington Avenue and is a sea of people and exhibitors. This year will mark the 25th year of the Street Festival, so there will be some extra special celebrations for those who attend.
Summer weather is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the Concerts in the Park and Movies in the Park, held at various locations throughout Town over the course of the summer
months. Canada Day is another huge day of celebration and Aurora is well-known for its incredible day of live music, kid-friendly activities and popular fireworks display at Lambert Wilson Park.
And don’t forget to check out the Aurora Chamber of Commerce Home and Living Show at the Stronach Aurora Recreation Centre from April 17-19.
As the longest running Home Show in York Region it offers a variety of exhibits, demos and activities for adults and children. Make a day of it and support local businesses.

Every day, individuals across Canada, and the world, throw away products and materials that could have been reused, recycled or composted. These items fill the trashcans of homes, businesses and public spaces in our towns and cities.
“You only have a few seconds for a person to decide where to dispose of their trash. Any longer and you’ve lost them”, says CleanRiver Recycling Solutions founder and CEO, Bruce Buchan. “You have to make it easy for them to do the right thing.”
This is exactly what CleanRiver does. In fact, it’s their mandate. The words, ‘We make it easy to do the right thing,’ are proudly scrawled on the wall in their boardroom and on the backs of their business cards.
But a recycling bin, is a recycling bin, is a recycling bin… or is it?
Not to CleanRiver. This Aurora-based company, in business for almost 30 years, takes recycling to a completely new level. Their bins, made of 97% recycled plastic, help improve consumer recycling knowledge and habits
without their even knowing it. Their ‘future ready’
LEGO-like bin design allows businesses to separate trash and different types of recyclables and add to or adjust the size of each compartment as needs change.

keep up with emerging trends. “Some of the
best solutions come out of customer requirements,” says
Buchan. “If they need it; maybe others do, too.”
Recently, his company partnered with Vancouver-based technology company, Intuitive AI, who have developed artificial intelligence. Oscar, the garbage sorting bot, makes real time predictions about where to toss the waste in your hand as you approach a recycling bin. This will undoubtedly be a game changer.
Over time, CleanRiver’s recycling bins have evolved, as have their services. They take a holistic approach to serving clients, making sure to look at the big picture to determine the best possible solution for each client. This is part of the CleanRiver “way”.
Their “way” seems to be working as the company continues to grow and expand across global markets, with their recycling bins in use at businesses and organizations around the world including big name clients such as Tim Hortons, Google, Tesla and Facebook.
Success for CleanRiver has not come overnight though. Like most entrepreneurs, Buchan can remember the times when things were tough, and his company and dreams were precariously perched on the brink of failure. Chuckling, he even admits at having to raid

his daughter’s piggy bank on an occasion or two to make ends meet.
He credits his eventual success to three key things: integrity, teamwork and culture. The last one being the glue that binds it all together. “It’s that final push that is going to get you into the zero waste,” he says. “It’s always about the culture.”
Over the years, there has also been a paradigm shift. As the urgency surrounding climate change continues to intensify, this has led to increased corporate social responsibility and the introduction of business recycling programs and other sustainability initiatives.
“Part of this is cost avoidance (recycling materials actually costs less than disposing of waste) and recognition that it will be better for public relations” says Buchan. It is also, however, about companies sincerely “wanting to do the right thing and reduce their footprint.”
“A zero-waste future is possible,” says Buchan, whose own company has a waste diversion rate of over 98%. “We pride ourselves on the fact that we really do walk the talk.”
It’s clear that sustainability is deeply embedded in the CleanRiver culture. From 100 residents in 1851 to more than 60,000 in 2019, Aurora has managed to preserve much of its heritage, history and small-town charm. With a downtown core situated on Yonge Street, the main street is lined with multiple historic and unique shops and restaurants, proudly owned and run by small business owners. In support of this historic role, the Town approved the Aurora Promenade Plan to support and encourage investment and revitalization in the downtown core.
Just off of Yonge Street lies one of the most beloved heritage buildings in town - 22 Church Street, known as the Church Street School. The former schoolhouse first opened in 1886 and is recognized as a designated heritage site due to its High Victorian architecture and storied history – Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson

attended school there. The building is currently host to the Aurora Cultural Centre and the Aurora Museum and Archives and in 2020 is set to undergo a large renovation project. The $50 million Library Square project will feature the creation of a new public square, a 200 + seat black box theatre, new community space and a pedestrian bridge
to connect the new facility to the Aurora Public Library and Yonge Street.
Only a few blocks away from the Church Street School, you’ll find Aurora’s historic Armoury. Built in 1873 as a drill shed for the military, it was the site where local soldiers gathered before heading off to fight in WWI. The building was recently restored and is now the crown jewel of the popular Town Park. The Armoury currently hosts the Canadian Food and Wine Institute at Niagara College and
regularly hosts events and workshops for the community on everything from wine tasting to pasta making. During events at the park,
the Armoury’s café offers up gourmet hot chocolate, coffee and tasty treats. The Town Park that surrounds the Armoury is also chock full of charm with a bandshell playing host to concerts in the summer and an open-air ice rink in the winter.

Looking to get your steps in or let your kids burn off some extra energy? There’s no shortage of active things to do here in Aurora. The Town of Aurora has three outstanding recreation facilities: the Aurora Community Centre (ACC), the Aurora Family Leisure Complex (AFLC) and the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex (SARC). Both the SARC and the AFLC have swimming pools offering a variety of classes and open swim times, with the SARC being home to a kid-friendly pool, water slide and therapeutic pool. The ACC is the home of hockey in Aurora with two rinks, one of which plays host to our local Jr. A hockey team the Aurora Tigers. Visit aurora.ca for more information on recreation facilities.
For those looking to hit the gym, the Club Aurora Fitness Centre is located inside the AFLC and offers members and visitors a wide variety of both

cardiovascular and weight training equipment, as well as a diverse array of programs to meet the needs of individuals from 12 years of age and up. In addition to its 90-metre pool the centre also posts a two-lane indoor track with a rubberized surface.
The Town also has an extensive and growing inventory of sports fields. Aurora currently maintains 18 baseball diamonds and 69 soccer fields located throughout the Town, including one artificial turf field located at Sheppard’s Bush. These
facilities are some of the best in the region, largely due to the Town’s high maintenance and construction standards. Visit aurora.ca for more information on recreation and sports field facilities.
Residents are welcome and encouraged to use the Town of Aurora’s recreation facilities, which are available at reasonable rates for meetings, recreation programs, fundraising events, social gatherings and much more. Weather not right for outdoor play? Don’t worry, the Aurora Sports Dome is an indoor, multi-sport facility located in Aurora. The Dome is a heated, air-supported structure, with an infill turf playing surface that provides an incredible experience for all field sport activities. Access Aurora is our one-stop customer service centre providing answers on everything visitors and residents need to know about life in our community. Whether you need to know how to pay taxes or water bills, purchase a pet licence, pay a parking ticket or get married, Access Aurora is your first point of contact.
Want to avoid getting a parking ticket in the first place? Good call. Parking restrictions are posted throughout Town and a number of areas have three-hour parking limits. Between November 15 and April 15 parking on residential streets is prohibited between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. to allow for efficient and effective road maintenance. For more information on parking in town, visit aurora.ca/parking.
For those who prefer to walk instead of drive, Aurora has a vast trail system connecting
parks and public spaces. With 57 kilometeres of pathways, the trails are popular with joggers, cyclists, hikers and skiers alike. Visit aurora.ca/parksandtrails for a full list of our extensive greenspaces. Residents and visitors are reminded that dogs must be kept on leash at all times, except while visiting the Aurora Dog Park (aurora.ca/dogpark). Issues regarding pets can always be directed to the Town’s Animal Services Division (aurora.ca/animalservices).
Throughout the year the Town’s Community Services Team is busy running programs and activities for all ages. The Town runs popular and affordable summer camps, pre-school programs, youth programs, adult programs and a multitude of programs and services for seniors. From the Loft Youth Centre to the Aurora Seniors’ Centre there is no shortage of opportunities for education and friendship. Check out the most

As an active community that takes pride in outdoor spaces, the Town actively supports green initiatives and encourages all residents and visitors to recycle and avoid single-use plastics. Refillable water bottle stations can be found throughout Town facilities and Aurora regularly runs e-waste, textile and curbside giveaway events to redirect unwanted items from landfill. Waste and recycling services are provided by Green for Life (GFL) and information on waste pickup and key dates can be found on the Town’s Recycle Coach mobile app or on the website at aurora.ca/wasteandrecycling.

Aurora Supports BusinessIn partnership with the York Small Business Enterprise Centre and the Aurora Chamber of Commerce, the Town supports start up and small businesses during their initial years of development and operation. Entrepreneurs are provided with easy access to business consulting services and information covering management, marketing and sales, technology, and finance.
The Town of Aurora also offers priority processing and personalized service for all non-residential development
projects. The team will guide non-residential projects through our “One Window” concept with immediate input and access to key decision makers.
The Town also provides site selection support for new non-residential investors to ensure that the transition to your new facility is seamless.
These programs are supported by the Aurora Chamber of Commerce who is the active voice of local business in the community; and provides
professional development and opportunities to connect with the community and other businesses.
