The Music Department dedicates this year’s performance to Dr. James Freese, in recognition of his twenty years

of service at CUW as a professor, mentor, musician, colleague, and friend.

We would also like to thank the music students that were unable to be present for the recordings due to being impacted by COVID-19. Thank you for your time and

preparation, and for your dedication to helping keep your fellow Concordians healthy.

“Christmas at Concordia” is a thirty-year legacy which began in 1987. The first “Christmas at Concordia” offered one Friday evening non-ticketed concert, drawing over a thousand attendees. With the

chapel seating around eight hundred, approximately two hundred stood to watch the performance. The first performing groups were Kammerchor, Chorale, The Alleluia Ringers, and the Symphonic

Wind Ensemble, with one hundred and twenty students participating. In 1988, CUW hosted the first dual full-house concerts - one on Friday night and one on Saturday night. Since 2003, both

evenings of the performance had enough attendees to fill the chapel to capacity.

Today, the number of students in our performing music ensembles has grown to over four hundred, with ten performing ensembles. The groups comprise music majors and minors, as well as students from liberal arts majors throughout the university who wish

to perform and study music with our acclaimed music faculty.

The Music Department, along with the CUW campus community, are thrilled to have you join us in one of the treasured traditions of the University. Please enjoy the performance.

Carol: “What Child Is This”.....................................................................................................................LSB 370 1. What Child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet while shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing. Haste, haste, to bring him laud, the babe, the Son of Mary.

2. Why lies He in such mean estate where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christian, fear; for sinners here the silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear shall pierce Him through, the cross be borne for me, for you. Hail, hail the Word made flesh, the babe, the Son of Mary.

3. So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh; come peasant, king, to own Him. The King of kings salvation brings; let loving hearts enthrone him. Raise, raise a song on high, the Virgin sings her lullaby; Joy, joy for Christ is born, the babe, the Son of Mary.

Ensemble Directors

Prof. Mark Bloedow, Assistant Professor of Music, is Director of Handbell Activities at Concordia. He conducts the Alleluia Ringers and Chapel Ringers, and is the conductor and developer of Concordia’s community choir, the Concordia Civic Chorale. In addition, Mark is the founding Executive/Artistic Director of Maestro Productions, Inc. (including the Ringing Badgers Handbell Ensemble), and Music Director at Immanuel Lutheran Church, all located in Madison. He was previously director of the Madison Community Chorus; Artistic Director for Madison’s Choral Arts Society Chorale; and Guest Director, Associate Music Director and Music Director for Madison Area Concert Handbells. Mark received his master’s degree in Church Music from Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon, and later served at Concordia as guest adjunct Professor of Music before joining the music faculty full time.

Dr. Alexa Doebele is associate professor of music and Director of Choral Activities at Concordia University Wisconsin, where she conducts Kammerchor, Selah, and the Chapel Choir, as well as teaches courses in music education and parish music. She has taught previously at the University of Wyoming, the University of Colorado, and Front Range Community College. She is a frequent clinician, adjudicator, and guest conductor, and is active as an editor of choral music. She is also active as both a solo and choral singer, having appeared with the Milwaukee Chamber Choir, Vox Antiqua, the Milwaukee Choral Artists, the Colorado Conductors’ Chorus, the Ars Nova Singers, and St. Martin’s Chamber Choir.

Dr. Louis A. Menchaca, professor of music, has directed all aspects of instrumental music at CUW. Under his guidance, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble has gained local, regional, national and international attention by performing in concert halls, churches and schools in thirty-eight states (including Hawaii) and continental Europe. His collaborative skills have allowed innovative programming in the genres of Jazz, Orchestra, Concert Band, Chamber Winds, Brass, Youth, Pops, Symphonic, and Concerto. He also teaches conducting and music education. Other duties include conducting the Chamber Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble as well as serving as department head. His professional performance credentials can be found at www.drlouisamenchaca.com.

Mrs. Johanna Anderson is the Associate Director of Instrumental Music at CUW, where her primary responsibilities include directing the University Band and the Pep Band and Drumline. She also chairs the music scholarship committee and works with the admissions department to recruit students to the music program. She graduated from CUW in 2013 with a B.A. in K-12 Music Education and K-12 Spanish Education. While at CUW, Mrs. Anderson was a member of several instrumental ensembles, and she also served as the Symphonic Wind Ensemble Tour Coordinator for four years. This is Mrs. Anderson’s sixth year teaching at CUW; previously, she taught band and orchestra at Perry A. Tipler Middle School in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Mrs. Anderson also holds a M.M. in Music Education from Boston University. Mrs. Anderson regularly performs professionally in the greater Milwaukee area, and this is her fifth season as principal oboist of the Kettle Moraine Symphony Orchestra.

Music at ConcordiaSince 1881, Concordia University’s mission has been teaching and preparing students for careers and vocations that serve the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. Music has always been an integral part of that mission. The music department contributes to the spiritual, cultural, artistic, academic, and co-curricular aspects to university life on campus. As the campus has grown in scope and size, the music department has become more integral to the university mission and surrounding community.

Of the residential students, more than one-third participate in musical ensembles, applied instruction, and course study. More than half of the ensemble participants in the music department are non-music majors who wish to continue to perform and study music with our acclaimed faculty and conductors. Each year, as part of our concert series, all the departmental ensembles present two performances of Christmas at Concordia in the historic Chapel of Christ Triumphant. This production has received national acclaim and continues to be sold out numerous times to the extent of over 800 people per performance. Additionally, the ensembles are extremely active in assisting with worship music at many of our local and regional congregations.

The curriculum offers a broad range of performance opportunities, including playing with the symphonic, choral, handbell, and jazz ensembles. Each year, the premier ensemble within each medium takes a tour throughout the regional or continental United States. International travel opportunities have taken the ensembles to Asia, Europe, Scandinavia, and South America.

For music majors, the curriculum offers undergraduate majors in Music Education (instrumental or choral emphasis), Music as a Liberal Arts major, Parish Music, and an equivalency in Music Therapy with Alverno College. Graduate offerings include the Master of Church Music with either choral or organ emphasis. Mequon’s proximity to the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, metropolitan area offers students a multitude of musical and cultural opportunities. Study on all vocal, keyboard, band, and orchestral instruments is available from faculty who are drawn from some of the finest professional performing ensembles in the Milwaukee area. Students have an opportunity to hear their applied teachers perform with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra, the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra, Present Music, and countless other jazz and professional ensembles.
