Pastor’s Page

We find ourselves in a difficult moment in time. I often wonder, as the events of life go by, which will

be remembered in the history books a few generations from now. The events of our present day will

be remembered. I do not believe that our individual lives—and our national life—has been more dis-

rupted in the last few weeks than it has since World War II. Hopefully our present predicament will be

relatively short, but it will be remembered.

There are a number of ways we must protect ourselves and I hope that you all will continue to use pru-dent, but loving care in your lives. Many of the changes in our behavior and in our way of thinking will need to be remembered after this crisis is over. We must especially remember how we live and what we do has a profound effect upon others. For decades, our cultural ethic has been to think that it doesn’t matter what we do as long as nobody gets hurt. This crisis has shown us that what we do has extensive and potentially hurtful consequences that go far beyond ourselves. Our American culture could do with a good dose of the Ten Commandments as our Lutheran Catechism teaches them. And behind the commandments stand our blessed Lord’s summary of them: “So in everything, do to oth-ers what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 7:12)

Our current crisis will hopefully pass away soon. But it will still be around as we celebrate Holy Week,

Easter, the season of Easter and Pentecost. Please be patient as St. Luke’s does our best to cope with

the disruptions that this produces in our congregational life. More importantly, don’t let the joy of

Easter be swallowed up by the skinny and boney cows of the Corona virus. [I know that sounds weird,

but you might want to check out Gen 41:14-21]. Through all of the darkness and difficulty of our pre-

sent moment, the light of the resurrection of Jesus, our Savior, shines like a beacon. As the Corona

virus fills hospitals and sadly tombs, Easter reminds us that God empties them. Jesus’ resurrection is

the “first fruits” of God’s power over sin, death and the devil. Jesus, the Christ, seated on the throne

of heaven is the true reality of our day—and of eternity! And, Jesus our risen Lord, present to us

through the work of the Holy Spirit, is our way, and our truth and our life.

So, my wonderful brothers and sisters in Christ, don’t let troubles of our day overcome the joy of East-

er. Heed the words of St. Paul: I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with

the glory that will be revealed in us. (Romans 8:21) In fact, let us be strengthened by this mo-

ment for the life of faith to which we have been called.

So how do I wish you a blessed, joyful Easter in days like we are now in? My words are stumbling so

let me leave it to one whose words were inspired. Again, St. Paul tells us: Therefore, since we have

been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through

whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast

in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we

know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character,

hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our

hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. (Romans 5:1-5)

Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! May you know the joy of this Easter reality which has empowered the church for almost two millennia and empowers us today.

Yours in Christ, Pastor Shirey

Pastoral Call Process Update

Thanks to all who attended our Congregational Work-shop!

The work done at that meeting was crucial in helping our call committee with the next step in this process which is completing the Congregational Profile. This will be given to the dean of our mission district and

to the assistant to the bishop and they will add it to the list of vacancies on the NALC site.

Our committee members are: Amy Amadee (chair), Sue Beatty, Cristie Crytzer, Ronna Drennen, Bill Gordon, Kim Lunn. Rachel Steiner

We will do our best to keep everyone informed as we go through this process together. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.

On Saturday April 25th there will be a clean-up day on

campus. We will be working in the Centennial Hall, the hall classrooms, the

church and around the grounds (weather permitting). We will meet at 8:30 am

for a light continental breakfast and prayer and are hoping to be done by noon.

Please plan to stop by. Any time you can give is a gift.

Gardener’s Paradise and Pancake Breakfast

After many successful years, St. Luke’s has decided that we will not be hosting the

Gardener’s Paradise and pancake breakfast this year.

Pentecost Geraniums

On Pentecost, May 31st, the sanctuary will be decorated with red and white gerani-

ums as a symbol of the coming of the Holy Spirit, as He did that first Pentecost in

the form of flames. Flowers may be taken home following the late service. Flow-

ers are $3.00 for a 4.5 inch pot. If you would like to order please contact the

church office (724-352-2333). Checks can be mailed to PO Box 187, Saxonburg

PA 16056.

Thank You!!

Dear St. Luke’s,

Thank you all for the love and support you

have shown me and my family at the loss of

my mother, Barbara Schneidmiller. A spe-

cial thank you to Pastor Shirey, Jeannine

Sanford and Marge Kollinger. You are much

appreciated.

Sincerely,

Tom and Gretchen Gallagher

St. Luke’s Senior Stars,

Thank you for your lovely Valentine card. You are so very kind and thoughtful. I appreciate

your many acts of kindness.

Life has been very difficult and somewhat painful. I pray for God’s mercy and help through

these days.

Thank you again for thinking of me even though I am not a member of St. Luke’s.

Gratefully,

Rose Marie Grossman

Dear Friends of St. Luke’s Church Saxonburg,

We at Cabot UM Food Bank would like to thank each of you for being such an important

part of this program. Once again in the past year of 2019 you have been so faithful and a

blessing to us.

You truly show God's goodness and love by what you do to help others. It’s wonderful

to have you be a part of this much needed program.

Your love, prayers, gifts of canned goods and money has made it possible for us to con-

tinue to help the families in need. Without your faithfulness we would not be able to.

Thank you, for the fresh potatoes at Thanksgiving and the fruit baskets at Christmas

that you provided once again for each family. They are always so happy with them.

We can never say thank you enough, to the group of faithful people that come to the

food bank on Monday night to pack food. It is wonderful to see all the boxes change into bags

of food when you are done. Thank you so very much for your help! Each of you is so appreci-

ated and we thank God for you.

We remain yours in Christ's love.

Beverly Murray, Co-Chair

Dear St. Luke’s Church Family,

Thank you for the prayers, cards during my

recent surgery. My family and I thank Pas-

tor Shirey for being there the day of my sur-

gery and also all the visits while being in the

hospital. Prayers do work.

God Bless,

Beryl Mottern

Mission Support Welcome to a regular feature in the Angel highlighting the monthly recipients of St. Luke’s Christian Mission funds. St. Luke’s directly gives 12 equal shares to mission and outreach ministries. Samaritan Counseling Center, Cabot, PA - April

The Samaritan Counseling Center of Western PA is the highlighted ministry for mission support giving in June. Since 1982, the Samaritan mission is to empower those served to gain hope healing and the ability to move forward in their lives

The center is an ecumenical, non-profit organization providing psychological counseling and educational programs using the resources of faith. Its core values are faith, holistic wellness, community, charity, hope and healing, excellence and integrity. It provides individual, child/adolescent and family counseling to people of all or no religious background. They offer anger management, spiritual direction, educational programs, supportive groups and congregational care. There are 10 offices throughout the Pittsburgh area including Butler. The center and professional staff are fully accredited and licensed. The Reverend Dr. Graham Standish, Executive Director, will be at St. Luke’s on April 26th.

NALC - May and June

The North American Lutheran Church (NALC) national organization and district are the monthly recipients of the May and June mission support funds. The NALC is a fast-growing Christian church in the Lutheran tradition, uniting more than 141,000 Lutherans in more than 420 congregations across North America. The NALC embodies the theological center of Lutheranism in North America and stands firmly within the global Lutheran mainstream.

NALC is committed to the authority of the Bible as the inspired Word of God. In keeping with the Lutheran Confessions, NALC believes that all doctrines should and must be judged by the teaching of Scripture. The NALC has embraced four core values which shape our common life: Christ Centered, Mission Driven, Traditionally Grounded, and Congregationally Focused. NALC is a church centered on the Gospel of Jesus Christ, animated by missions and evangelism, grounded in the 2,000-year tradition of Christian faith, and organized chiefly to serve the congregations. A renewed Lutheran community moving forward in faith, the NALC is focused on living out Christ’s Great Commission to go and make disciples in North America and around the globe.

At the time of the constituting Convocation in August 2010, 17 congregations had voted to join the NALC. Of the more than 420 NALC congregations now, about 70 are mission congregations, reflecting the priority placed on missions and evangelism by the NALC. St. Luke’s is a member of the Mid-Northeast Mission District, which encompasses western Pennsylvania, western Maryland, western New York and West Virginia. The Rev. Carl Johnson of Kittanning serves as district dean. St. Luke’s has participated in mission and national events, including disaster relief mission work.

The 2020 Convocation will be held August 3-7 in Pittsburgh. The theme is “God the Father Creates.”

Two monthly services will be held (one in the Alzheimer's Unit and the other in the main residential area of Magnolia Place). This is your chance to serve and love the community. The first service is at 2 pm in the Alzheimer's Unit and the second is at 3 pm in the main residential area, on April 5th and May 3rd. Each service is approximately 30-45 minutes in length. For additional information, see Jeannine Sanford.

Outreach/Evangelism

Isaac Watts’ 1719 hymn, “O God, Our Help in Ages Past”, is based on Psalm 90,

and is perhaps Watts’ most bracing hymn. It was played on the radio by the BBC

as soon as World War II was declared, and was later sung at the funeral of Win-

ston Churchill. It is surely appropriate in our current time of need. May it raise

our hearts to Jesus!

Milestones 65th Wedding Anniversary of James and Helen McLafferty.

James McLafferty and the former Helen Fisher do si do (ed) right

into each other’s lives in 1953. And now, they are celebrating a

lifetime of marital bliss on May 14th.

Jim and Helen met at a square dance in the Old Town Hall of Sax-

onburg (where the Presbyterian church now stands). They fell in

love over the months as they danced every Thursday night and

occasionally on Saturdays with Jim’s parents. After a year of da-

ting, Jim proposed to Helen following a movie night. They were

married the following year on May 14, 1955 at Winchester, VA by

the Rev. Schmucker. Family members were present at the wed-

ding. Jim and Helen honeymooned around the Virginia area. A

small reception was held when they returned home. Helen still has her wedding suit, hat

and shoes.

Their favorite song was The Tennessee Waltz. They now enjoy The Old Rugged Cross and

How Great Thou Art.

Jim worked at Penn Dixie and later retired from Du-Co. He is a military veteran. Helen

was the youngest of five girls. In 1941, Helen’s mother died tragically in a car crash when

she was nine years old. Her father raised five girls (Hattie, Viola, Edith, Hazel and Helen).

Hazel and Helen were inseparable until Hazel’s passing in May 2013. Helen is the last sur-
