    CARLTON RIVERINA FOOTBALL lEAGUE EDITORIAL

Who is your fancy for the I 984 Quinn Medal, the award for the Best and Fairest player in the Carlton Riverina Football League?

With the home and away part of the season now rapidly draw-ing to a close, the exciting time of the foot-ball year will really be with us in just a few weeks.

While clubs in the finals will be looking for much sought after premiership pen-nants, it's also the time of the season for individuals to come under notice.

The award for the best player in the league carries with it a sense of pride and personal achievement for the winner.

While everyone has some thoughts about just who might take out this year's Quinn

Medal, if past history is repeated, a player not really a 'star' performer and noted big name footballer, could be the one to wear the medal.

Each club has those three or four players who always seem to come up trumps in the weekly club awards, but the field umpires who allot the votes quite often see matters much differently.

While it's reasonable to assume that the player would be a member of our successful representative side this season, it's also on the cards that he could be an 'unsung' hero.

The winner will be know on Monday evening, September 3rd, when the League will conduct its medal count and associated presentation evening at the Narrandera Ex-Servicemens Club.

Riverina Football League representative players, strappers, and attendants will also be honoured at the function.

    RED. WHITE & BLUE

We have taken better sides to Ariah Park than last week's and still been well beaten, but not flogged by 100 points. If last week's effort is any indication for the rest of the season, then it is going to be a long three weeks.

We only had a handful) of triers namely Greg Tooze, Mark Purcell, Jock Carroll, Po Daniher with Mark and Steve Cox battling the game out.

The Reserves were well led by 'Ginny' and 'Robo', Tim McGregor was again outstanding. It is very pleasing to see some old and new faces rallying around to help out in the Reserves. Great to see Ray Posselt back, who hasn't lost any of his old touch, but spare a thought for our Treasurer Col Dunn who has a heap of work to do in that capacity yet fronts up each week in the Seconds -that's true club spirit!

RE~';;vHvoti~hs Not only did we have a howling wind, we had a flock of seagull~ as well. What brand were thev?,

although it's_ too late our Olympic sailors could ~ave done_ with some. I guess by know you know It was a bit breezy last week.

Our Under Nineteens took the wind out of the Imps sails, just shows that football beats biff. A v~ry good disciplined effort, not only did they wm, they. created a club record by winning 15 goals straight - well done lads! Bolton Pest of the Week was shared by Dean Knight and 'Jocko' Skid Rowe. Overall a great team effort.

'!'he ~nd XVIII scraped and scrounged to a one pomt wm aft~r a desperate last quarter, or should I say last 5 mmutes. It's good to sec a side play so badly and still win - OR IS IT?! Len Wade won the Brute of the Week. Tom Elwin Pewter to Barry Norrice.

The Fhts tried hard but just couldn't peg back t~e lead set up by the Imps in the first quarter aided by the strong breeze. Maybe if we won the toss we would have won. Pilkington Shirt to Bar-ry Long and Pewter to Peter Brereton.

Today the Bombers, so let's deactivate them and get the points.

. Congratulations to Garry and Sue Piltz on the birth of your daughter Hayley.

    RED. BLACK V

When all's said and done, last week's efforts against Temora weren't too bad!

All three Dons teams were missing good regular players (to say that of the Seconds is an understatement) and to win the U 19s and perform well enough to win the Senion, were com-

mendable performances. In the Under 19s the reluctant tra\ellen,, Darren

Grass and Andrew Woods were 'Men of the Match', whilst Vince Crouch. Paul 'mark of the year' Crouch. Paul Errington and Michael Stancombe all did well.

The Reserves, stacked with 'reserves· - U 19s doubling up and a couple of 'crocks' gave their all, and that's the most a coach can hope for! Paul Errington was great in detcnce and a worthy winner ot the man of the match award.

Paul Allen, leader for the day. did so by example and Damian Cnmmms did well on one leg to steer thn>ugh his first goal for a couple of seasons.

Michael Dasey won the Mug and the Miltons Gear points in the Seniors. with Tony Owens, yet again, win-ning the Riverina Toyota award. Well P1gfans, yet again we have let you down Both grades were beaten by better sides against Coota and have their backs to the wall. Let's hope that last wcekcnd·s rest has done us good, and that we can still give this premiership a ~hake. We all know we have the players to do it.

    11 RED & WHITE

    STRIPES

I don't think that there's much need to stress upon both grades the importance of this week's games. Both sides need only to win their respective game~ and it\, a hallowed final four spot for each of them. It would be the first time m six years that both sides had fronted up the finals together. The First have shown this season that they have what it takes to beat all opponents, while the Sccon~s have _improved v~stly since the last Borce clash with a wrn over Whitton and a narrow defeat bv Juncc-Kapooka.

On the social side, the last few weeks have been carried out in a way only the Piggies can. The assault on Albury and the Bushpigs Debutante Ball and Recovery last weekend proved to be huge successes and much thanks must go to Sue Bruton and her family, the Toole family, Albury itself, the Bates, Java, the Committee, the Sows and everybody else from Union Staff to the guests. Good luck to the Sows in their final today and to all players in both Bushpig sides. .

Come on Piggies we all know that both sides arc capable of wins at the Creek today so let's not let our faithfull supporters down and march on to the ~cm1s.

    ■ Last Saturday's bleak weather was soon forgotten with a rousing

victory over our likely semi-finalist opponents Junee-Kapooka. The last quarter fight back showed much character and will work won-ders around finals time. It was a case of the young and the old lead-

ing the charge. Leon Reid played a superb last quar-ter at ruck-rover. Playing a kick behind the play. he continually thwarted any attempt by Junec to push forward. Graham Henley showed much courage with some great marks and produced the goods when they were most needed. Tony Foley took the mug with a full four quarter effort.

The Reserves suffered their :..econd defeat for the season, unfortunately also against likely semi-final opponents. The margin was not great. only five points, but psychologically It could be harmful. They really failed to play as a team, and consequently played well below their capabilities. Jeff Bristow again played well with some intelligent shepherding and teamwork. John Hart was a tireless ruckman with Wayne Wrongo DcBritt battling it out to the fimsh.

Today i~ our 25th Anniversary and we play Whit-ton m the last game before the fmals begin. A wel-come is extended to all former players, many of whom have travelled a long way. Let's :start the weekend off on the right note with two win:-. and the first IOO goals in the competition.
