OUR ACTIONS WILL IGNITE THE GENIUS AND NURTURE THE GOODNESS WITHIN US ALL

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians, On behalf of the Cherokee Trail High School Counseling Department, it is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 2020-2021 school year. We want to take this opportunity to share information about the counseling department and our backgrounds. The Cherokee Trail Counseling Department’s goal is to support all students throughout high school in planning for their post-secondary path by implementing a comprehensive ICAP (Individual Career and Academic Plan) curriculum at all grade levels. As counselors, we believe that all aspects of a student’s high school experience can be nurtured and supported; there is something for everyone at CT. Cherokee Trail counselors are assigned based on student last names, with the exception of students who are identified as Gifted and Talented. Below are the counselor assignments for your information:

• A-Cho Sameen DeBard

• Chr-Gao Becca Breen

• Gap-Haw Brooke Gabrielli

• Hay-Jac Lindsay Gillespie

• Jad-Mar Shondra Carpenter

• Mas-Phi Kedar Witte

• Pho-Sol Jesse Martinez

• Som-Z Nick Jasurda

• Gifted & Talented Mike McCorry We consider the counseling department to be “a hub of information,” and a valuable resource to all Cherokee Trail students and families. Counselors are available by phone at 720-886-1980, or students can schedule appointments online by visiting the counseling link on the Cherokee Trail website under Quick Links. Counselors are also available during Student Access Time from 7:45-8:15 a.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays. We look forward to working with you this school year. Sincerely, Cherokee Trail Counseling Department

Schedule Correction Policy Students are expected to make their course selections during the registration window in the spring semester of each school year. These

course selections represent decisions that are made collaboratively with the student, teachers, the student’s counselor, and the student’s

parents. Based upon these requests, faculty members are employed, sections are created, textbooks are purchased, and rooms are

allocated. The schedules students receive in August reflect these requests and are set for the entire school year.

Students may meet with their counselor to address the following schedule error corrections during the first two days of school:

● Student does not have the prerequisite to take a scheduled class

● Student has already passed the class and it is not a repeatable class

● Level changes (requires a fully completed Level Change Form. See below for procedure)

● Error in the schedule (Missing a core class or short the required number of classes for grade level)

● Additional class to meet college requirements/graduation requirements.

Requests that will NOT be considered:

● Elective changes

● Teacher changes

● Periods off/lunch preferences

● Changes to accommodate parent/student work schedules

● Straight drop because the student no longer wishes to take the class.

** ALL SCHEDULE ERRORS MUST BE ADDRESSED IN PERSON BY THE STUDENT DURING THE FIRST TWO DAYS OF SCHOOL.

EMAIL REQUESTS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.**

Withdraw Pass-Withdraw Fail: If there is a need to drop a class during the first four weeks of the semester, a WP/WF form will be required. A

WP/WF is noted on the permanent transcript and the following procedure must be followed:

● When a student, despite his/her own significant efforts is unable to continue satisfactorily in a class, the student’s teacher may initiate a

WP/WF request on the student’s behalf. The process is completed upon final approval of the Department Coordinator, student’s parent, and

counselor.

● A grade of WP/WF will be entered on the student’s transcript as an indication of work attempted. WP/WF will not be calculated into

the student’s cumulative grade point average.

Drop F: After the fourth week of the semester, a student requesting to drop a class will receive an F on their transcript. The student must obtain a

Drop with an F form from their teacher. A permanent grade of F will be recorded on the transcript and negatively impacts the student’s GPA. If the

drop makes the student short the required number of courses, he/she will not be allowed to drop the class. Drop with an F form must be approved

by the department coordinator and must also be signed by the student’s teacher, parent, and counselor.

Level changes: A level change is appropriate only if it is determined that the student is either above or below the current class’s academic level.

The decision to change levels is made by the teacher, parent, and the student. As students were allowed to select their core classes in the spring,

any student who wishes to level change downmust remain in the class for six weeks before a level change will be considered. Students who wish to

level change up may initiate the level change process immediately. If a level change is appropriate, the procedure below should be followed:

●The student may obtain the Level Change Form through the department coordinator. The student must secure signatures from the

current teacher, the department coordinator, his/her parent and their assigned counselor. The student will give the completed form

to his/her assigned counselor for processing.

● Before the level change process may begin, the student must have completed all homework, assignments, and tests to the best of

his/her ability and must have sought assistance from the teacher.

● Level changes may be made up through the end of the first 9 weeks of the semester.

● The letter grade at the time of the level change accompanies the student to the new class.

● Level changes are only for core classes (i.e.- chemistry honors to chemistry)

2nd semester corrections: Scheduling errors can be addressed in person by the student during the first two days of the semester following the

scheduling policy outlined above.

Important note about ALL schedule corrections: Students are responsible for attendance and grades in the originally scheduled class until the

change is confirmed in PowerSchool. It is the student’s responsibility to confirm any schedule changes with their counselor before attending the

new class.

MANDATORY STUDENT ID CARDS

A student’s Cherokee Trail High School ID card authorizes them to be on campus. EVERY student is

required to wear their CTHS ID card from 7:30am-4:00pm, while on school grounds. ID cards

must be displayed on the front of their person, above the waist, and in clear line of sight when on

campus; i.e. on a breakaway lanyard or clipped to the front of a shirt. ID cards may not be in the back

of phones, in pockets, in wallets, or clipped to bags. It is crucial that we can identify everyone on

campus. Identification of staff and students is a safety issue and will not be compromised. A student

not displaying an ID card will be subject to school consequences and lose privilege of attending

activities/events.

Student ID cards are required for:

● authorization to be on campus during the school day

● admission to school dances and activity events

● admission to home sporting events

● free admission to home athletic events with activity fee paid (excludes state competitions)

● student admission price at “away” athletic events

● boarding a school bus

● checking out books from the media center or resource centers

● checking out equipment

● obtaining school parking permits

● obtaining a work permit

● paying for fees and fines in the bookkeeping office

● purchasing lunches from your lunch account

Lost/Stolen/Damaged/Replacement ID Cards

● The front and back of the ID Card must remain plan, free of stickers, markings, or other photos.

● Lost, stolen, altered, damaged and defaced ID cards must be replaced immediately.

● Replacement cost for lost ID cards will be $5.00; incorrect cards will be replaced for free.

ID Lanyards/Clips/Magnets

• Cherokee Trail lanyards or wearable ID magnets will be sold in the media center.

• Students may choose to use their own lanyards or ID display system if it meets the criteria

above.

Permission to Release Student Records Electronically

Agreement to Waive Access to Recommendations

Dear Seniors and Families:

Cherokee Trail High School will be using the EDOCS system in conjunction with Naviance to electronically release

records to institutions. In order to do so, the CTHS counseling office must have your permission to electronically

send transcripts and letters of recommendations to those colleges, scholarship organizations and other programs to

which you are applying. Post Grad Office will only forward ACT, SAT, SAT II’s, and AP scores to the colleges under

exceptional circumstances. Colleges are now requesting the original ACT, SAT, or SAT II score reports be sent

directly from the testing agency (ACT or College Board) to the college as part of the application. During district wide

ACT testing on February 25, 2020, every student was allowed to request four free score reports be sent to colleges

of their choice. Additional score reports for future college entrance exams must be requested at the time of

registration or forwarded directly from the ACT or SAT website.

Please read our record release procedures below and then complete the online form to authorize permission to

release the requested forms electronically.

Transcripts and letters of recommendations will be sent electronically unless otherwise requested at the time a

student fills out the Transcript Request form in the Post-Grad Office. At that time a student may alternatively

request that records be sent via U.S. mail or processed for student pick-up in a sealed and stamped envelope.

Otherwise, all student records will be sent electronically.

Students can expect that the staff members who agree to write recommendations on their behalf will be honest

advocates. Recommendation letters written on behalf of the student are confidential documents, sent directly to

the colleges and other programs to which a student is applying. It is understood that the parent(s) and student

waive access to recommendations so that the recipients may place full faith in the perspectives being shared.

We have reviewed, understand, and accept the student record release policies above. We authorize the Cherokee

Trail Post-Grad Office to release the student’s transcript and other records to colleges and other programs which

he/she intend to apply. It is the student’s responsibility to inform the Post-Grad Office where to send his/her school

credentials and of the deadlines for each program when filling out the CTHS Transcript Request form.

We understand that all teacher and counselor recommendations are confidential documents and hereby waive

access to them. No letters of recommendation will be handed to a student or parent.

Please complete the FERPA Form to authorize permission to release the requested forms electronically.

Vision and Hearing Screenings

Please make sure your student wears their glasses or contacts.

Vision and hearing screenings are offered and conducted at the beginning of the school year for all

incoming 9th graders and students that are new to the district. Because of the important connection

between academic achievement and vision and hearing, parents are encouraged to allow their child

to participate in screenings. You may choose, however, to opt your student out of these services. If

you choose to opt your student out, please complete the Vision and Hearing Opt-out form.

Cherokee Trail 2020-2021

Parent Teacher Community Organization [PTCO]

Welcome new and returning CT families!

As you all know, the Covid-19 issue has changed many things for all of us, from the ways we do business

to how we interact with our friends and families. This has hit us pretty hard at Cherokee Trail as well, and

we are looking for new ways to support our students and staff through this time. Our primary main

fundraisers - calendars for the year (the actual on-campus schedule is still shifting) and our Craft Fairs

(our Spring Fair was cancelled, and we are still unsure of the status of our upcoming Fall Fair) - won’t be

generating the usual financial support, and we are hoping for family & community donations to bridge a bit

of that gap. Please use RevTrak to make donations to PTCO.

A bit about our organization: the purpose of the Cherokee Trail PTCO is to assist in attaining the highest

level of education and welfare for the entire student body of Cherokee Trail High School through the

cooperative efforts of the Faculty and Staff, the Cherry Creek School District community and parents.

PTCO shall also work to further the Cherokee Trail Mission statement: “Our actions will ignite the genius

and nurture the goodness within us all.” Here are some of the fruits of our fundraising efforts:

● PTCO provides classroom grants that enhance the educational and learning experience of the

Cherokee Trail High School student body. Last year, PTCO made over $25,000 in grants for

educational materials, equipment, and learning experiences. PTCO’s legacy for having an impact

on our students’ learning experience continues!

● PTCO hosts After Prom, a post-prom safe and alcohol-free event for CT students. More than 350

juniors and seniors attended After Prom 2019 Boondocks.

● PTCO prepares and serves dinner to the faculty and staff during the fall and spring

Parent/Teacher conferences.

● PTCO is a Teacher Appreciation Week sponsor.

● PTCO sponsors the annual Holiday Craft Fair each fall, followed months later with the Spring

Fling Craft Fair.

We are also in need of new general members! We invite you to join PTCO at our projects, programs and

meetings. PTCO enlists a communication platform to keep parents and guardians informed of volunteer

opportunities and school events. Be sure to Opt In during registration to receive our email communiques.

PTCO encourages you to share your ideas and help make a difference in your student’s experience

throughout his/her time at Cherokee Trail. If you would like to volunteer or join PTCO, please fill out the

PTCO Sign Up Form.

We hope you’ll make plans to join us for our General Membership meetings throughout the year. Watch

your email for dates and times . If you have any questions please email: [email protected] or

[email protected]. Your Cherokee Trail PTCO Board looks forward to making the 2020-2021

school year a great one!
