    Our Towns

EffinghamEffinghamA scenic drive through Effingham to-

day is full of surprising remnants from the past. Settlers were drawn to the area not only for its beauty but also for the powerful and abundant waters of the Ossipee River. Originally known as Leavitt’s Town after the family who set-tled the area, Governor Benning Wen-tworth granted the land in 1749 and renamed it after the Earl of Effingham to whom he was related by marriage. Effingham was incorporated in 1778, and later in 1831, the section north of Ossipee River was incorporated sepa-rately as the town of Freedom.

Once the Effingham Falls were har-nessed to generate electricity in 1820,

the town became a prosperous and industrious community supported by grist and saw mills, wool and carriage factories, attracting many supporting small businesses and services into the area. Back in the 1800s Effingham was more populated than today.

The town is made up of four distinct districts or villages: Effingham Falls, Lord’s Hill, and Center and South Eff-ingham, best viewed by taking a lei-surely drive along Route 153. Bounded by lakes to the north and south, the area is criss-crossed with rivers and brooks, and dominated in the center by the crests of Welch Top, Hanson Top and Green Mountain.

Center Effingham sits atop a hill crowned by an imposing Italianate building dating back to 1861. Originally built to house the New England Mason-ic Charitable Institute, along with meet-ing rooms for the Masonic Lodge, it has also served as the town hall and today houses the Effingham Library. The Ma-sonic Temple is open only twice a year to the public, the 3rd Saturday in Oc-tober (for the NH Statewide Freemason Open House) and during the Drakes’s Corner Street Fair (6/20/20) from 9am to 2pm. Also located within walking dis-tance are the Effingham Historical So-ciety building (formerly Drake’s Store), the Effingham Preservation building (formerly Effingham Grange), and the Baptist Church.

  • www.ossipeevalley.org | GUIDE BOOK 2020-2021 | 9

To the north is the Lord’s Hill dis-trict of Effingham, elegantly displaying an extraordinary collection of grand, stately old homes and historic build-ings, including Squire Lord’s Great House and Tavern, and the Lord’s Hill Meeting House, which features a Paul Revere bell crafted in 1821. Lord’s Hill and several of its buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. A

comprehensive description and history can be found at www.livingplaces.com.

South Effingham, locally known as Taylor City, sits on a sharp bend in Route 153 that straddles two states, two counties and two towns. On the NH side of the bend you’ll find Ye Old Sale Shoppe and on the Maine side, Country Gas General Store, run by father and son team Earle and Bill Taylor.

With its eastern boundary running along the Maine border and abutting Ossipee Lake, Freedom is a little town surrounding a small village well off the beaten path. Its name reflects its history: in 1831, the village of North Effingham voted to secede from Effingham, and in 1832, the new town celebrated its independence by changing its name to Freedom.

Sample the town’s history by visiting the historical society that maintains a charming museum, or by driving the back roads with many historic houses. Each year near Christmas, a group in town hosts a historic house tour, where private individuals open their beautifully decorated homes to visitors. Residents in town also have a Ring in the Holidays craft fair that is held at various locations throughout town. The town has been the setting for a couple of stories, including the

FreedomFreedomchildren’s fantasy book called The Enormous Egg by Oliver Butterworth, first published in 1956 but reissued years later.

Present-day and former residents gather in town every year for Freedom Old Home Week that takes place in August. This year the events run from July 31 - August 9. The event was created to encourage people to come back to their roots to enjoy many different social events through the week. Freedom is one of only five towns throughout the state that still celebrates a full Old Home Week. Activities are varied and include a myriad of events that bring current and former residents and their families together. For a complete schedule, visit www.freedomoldhomeweek.net.

In its continuing efforts to protect open space and maintain responsible growth, the town’s planning board

updated the master plan and has made recycling mandatory for anyone using the town’s transfer station.

In the summer, the population of Freedom more than doubles when children from all over the country settle into the numerous summer camps located on the shores of Ossipee Lake for hiking, boating and swimming.

MadisonMadisonMadison, with a population of more

than 2,500 people, is a charming and dynamic town that offers a touch of history with many outdoor attractions.

While Silver Lake, located at the town’s heart, provides numerous opportunities for boating, fishing, and swimming, many find the Madison Boulder catches them off guard. This large glacial erratic left behind from a melting glacier can be found off Route 113 heading north towards Conway. It is much larger than many can imagine at 37 feet long and weighing 4,660 tons.

In its early years, farming and lumbering were the town’s main enterprises, and lumbering continues to be a major industry. In 1826, the Madison Lead Mine, on the site of the

Goodwin Town Forest, was discovered, and for many years yielded zinc, lead, silver and iron ore.

“Madison Corner”, as it was once known, prospered because it was on a major stagecoach route connecting Boston and other seacoast towns with the White Mountains. In 1875, a railroad was completed along the shores of Silver Lake, and many new businesses opened in that area to accommodate the growing tourist trade. Tourism is still a prominent part of Madison’s economy with a resort, and ski area.

As with many towns in the area that have a lake, Madison has a history of well-known people who summered in the area. One such person was E. E. Cummings, a poet known for the independence of style in his writing. Madison’s Old Home Week is the first

    OssipeeOssipeeEncompassing the villages of Center

Ossipee, Granite, Ossipee Corners, Water Village, and West Ossipee, the area is abundant with natural and his-toric points of interest. Home to the county seat for Carroll County, it shares its name with the Ossipee Mountains, once a range of ancient volcanoes, which border it on the west. The town is a geologist’s dream, with portions of the volcanic “ring dike” from the Os-sipee Mountains still visible.

Ossipee was incorporated in 1785 after an active pre-Revolutionary War history of skirmishes between Native Americans and British settlers. Cap-tain John Lovewell built a fort near Os-sipee Lake in the early 1700s using

the foundation of a former fort which the English built in 1650 to assist the Ossipee Indians in their war against the Mohawks.

Today, Ossipee is a growing, thriv-ing town made up of charming villages scattered throughout the hills. Shops filled with unusual crafts and antiques dot the country roads. Locals, sum-mer residents, and guests enjoy all of Ossipee’s natural resources - fish-ing on Ossipee Lake, kayaking down the Bearcamp River, swimming at the town beach on Duncan Lake, hiking in the mountains, or visiting with friends and family at summer concerts. Snow-mobiling is another popular sport in the area. Trails crisscross town and continue to all other parts of the state. Ossipee is the home of the first snow-mobile.

and history, outdoor activities and cultural events year round. Craft demonstrations, classes, art gallery exhibits, and theatrical performances are offered to residents and visitors alike. Swimming, boating, biking, hiking, cross-country skiing, skating, bird watching or just enjoying a picnic at a scenic spot along a boulder-strewn river are just some of the ways to experience Sandwich year round. The town lies sheltered by the Sandwich Mountain Range, with 17 listed peaks, including Sandwich Dome, and the newly expanded Sandwich Wilderness Area. Many beautiful hikes can be found in the area.

To the south sits Squam Lake, the state’s second largest, lake, notable as the location for the film On Golden Pond. The pristine, spring fed lake is home to generations of vactioning families drawn to reconnecting with nostalgic traditions and activities of days gone by.

Chartered in 1763, Sandwich was named in honor of John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. The land was considered so inaccessible that the grant was enlarged, making

Sandwich one of the largest towns in New Hampshire. After a peak of manufacturing and farming in 1830, many moved to the cities. What now attracts people to the area is its rural beauty and propensity for the artistic. The Sandwich Farmers’ Market offers baked goods and produce each Saturday morning from 9 am-noon throughout the summer under the shade trees by the Samuel H. Wentworth Library. There is an Art Show on the Green in August during Old Home Week.

Did You Know?Did You Know?v It was in the Lord’s Hill district of Effingham in 1830, that James W. Bradbury, later Senator for Maine, took charge of the Effingham Union Academy Building (1819) and established the First Normal School – the first college of its kind for training teachers. The idea was his own and entirely novel at the time.

v Back in 1926, local residents John and Millie Burke gifted 105 acres of land in the southern part of Madison to the town for $1 to be put aside for conservation. It was the first such gift to a town in the state of New Hampshire. Today it is known as Burke Town Forest.

v If you’ve ever wondered about

those welcome signs as you enter Ossipee promoting it as the home of the first snowmobile, these machines were an adaptation of the Ford Model T, and invented and made in West Ossipee by Virgil D. White in the early 1910s. Originally, they were used by the Post Office and emergency crews to get around the area in the winter, and they later were used on polar expeditions.

v One of the oldest and most recognized craft organizations in the country, the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, grew out of efforts to promote crafts in the mid-1920s.

Mrs. Mary Coolidge opened a crafts shop in Center Sandwich and A. Cooper Ballentine started craft classes in Wolfeboro. They joined forces and ignited a craft movement that swept the state.

v The Chinook, New Hampshire’s official state dog, is a rare breed of sled dog raised in the early 1900s by Arthur Treadwell Walden of Wonalancet. Walden, along with his lead dog/stud named Chinook, was the lead driver and trainer on Richard Byrd’s 1929 Antarctic expedition.

On the Water...On the Water...Effingham lies partially on the Os-

sipee River watershed, home to the largest stratified-drift aquifer east of the Mississippi River. So, it is no sur-prise that the area abounds in riv-ers, ponds, lakes and streams ideal for fishing, kayaking, boating and swimming, including Province Lake, Ossipee River, Pine River and South River.

Freedom With its lakes and rivers, the town’s waterways cater to those who love to fish, kayak, swim and boat. In winter, Lake Ossipee turns into a winter playground for snowmobiling, ice fishing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, with spectacular views of Mount Chocorua and Mount Wash-ington.

Madison Along with the larger Sil-ver Lake and Purity Lake, many ponds and brooks traverse the area, inviting a lazy day to fish, swim, boat, sit on a sandy beach or do something a little more energetic like wakeboarding and water skiing.

Ossipee Locals and seasonal resi-dents alike enjoy Ossipee’s natural resources - fishing on Ossipee Lake, kayaking down the Bearcamp River, or swimming at the town beach on Dun-can Lake. Several companies offer boat, kayak and canoe rentals if you don’t have your own.

Tamworth Lakes, ponds and streams, including Lake Chocorua, White Lake and the Bearcamp River, offer kayaking, canoeing, fishing and swimming. Lake Chocorua in the win-ter delights snowmobilers, cross coun-try skiers and snowshoers. The town also has a farmer’s market.

As if the opportunity to buy fresh, seasonal, nutritious local produce was

not a sufficient reason to celebrate, farmers’ markets these days also offer a way to connect with people, places and history. Arrive with your shopping baskets to any of the area’s markets and you’ll be greeted with entertainment, artisan demonstrations and mouthwatering smells of food cooking. You’ll find our markets in village squares, community churches and town parks that offer comfortable places to sit and sample. In no time at all you’re making new friends and trading recipes over bundles of mindfully-raised produce. The market vendor is typically the farmer or baker or craftsperson who made or raised the item you’re purchasing.

Like No Other Place In New Hampshire

Welcome to New Hampshire’s last intact pitch pine–scrub oak woodland natural community, a globally rare forest type. Here you’ll find a diversity of uncommon wildlife, including nearly two dozen threatened and endangered moths and butterflies, and several declining bird species like whip-poor-will, common nighthawk and Eastern towhee. Beneath your feet, the forest serves as a natural filter for one of the Granite State’s largest “stratified-drift” aquifers, which ensures a constant and clean source of water for the area’s families and businesses.

Natural HistoryRoughly 15,000 years ago, the

last of the great continental glaciers melted away from the Northeast. In its wake, torrents of water carried debris embedded in the ice. While heavier rocks and boulders were deposited quickly in the uplands to form what is known as “glacial till,” the finer sands and gravels washed to the lowlands and were often deposited in “proglacial” lakes—large bodies of water that collected south of the melting glacier. For some time, Ossipee and Silver lakes were combined as a

proglacial lake, extending across the present-day gentle plain lying between them. Today, this is where the Ossipee Pine Barrens are found.

Pitch pine barrens thrive in the dry, acidic and infertile soil conditions of these sandy plains. Evergreen needles enable pitch pines to save energy by not having to reproduce leaves each season. They are also uniquely adapted to withstand and flourish in the frequent fires that occur due to the drought conditions.

In addition to pitch pines, common

plants found in the Ossipee Pine Barrens include scrub oak, black huckleberry, low-sweet blueberry, sweet fern and woodland sedge, as well as rare hairy hudsonia and slender-leaved goldenrod.

Protecting the Ossipee Pine BarrensProtecting the Ossipee Pine BarrensEarly on, the Ossipee Pine Barrens

were largely used for timber production. It was not until recent times that these lands began to be converted for housing, industry and other kinds of development—activities that continue to fragment the landscape each year. Only 2,000 acres of pitch pine-scrub oak barrens are left in the Ossipee region, representing the last viable occurrence of this forest community in the state.

Furthermore, the Ossipee Barrens lie above the Saco-Ossipee Aquifer, the largest stratified-drift aquifer in the state.

Undeveloped portions of the barrens serve as recharge areas for this important resource that provides clean drinking water for the towns of Freedom, Madison, Ossipee and Effingham.

Because of its importance for both people and nature, The Nature Conservancy has long identified the Ossipee Pine Barrens as a conservation priority. Since 1988, we have protected more than 2,700 acres of critical habitat here, including: large, excellent examples of the rare pitch pine-scrub oak woodland; a quarter-mile of undeveloped shoreline on Ossipee Lake; much of Cook’s Pond and a stream connecting it with Silver Lake, a popular destination for local paddlers. There are many opportunities for hiking, kayaking, cross-country skiing, hunting and snowmobiling.

bark of a pitch pine and you’ll know instantly what sets it apart from other trees: The thick bark protects the living tissue of the tree during a fire, while the seeds germinate best on soils exposed by fire. Unlike other pines, pitch pines are also able to sprout from both roots and trunks.

Historically, it is thought that the Ossipee Pine Barrens burned every 25 to 50 years—far more frequently than other forest types. However, over time the effort to suppress fires to protect homes and property had virtually eliminated fire from this ecosystem.

In 2005, after thorough research, The Nature Conservancy launched a comprehensive project to sustain the Ossipee Pine Barrens using a combination of mechanical vegetation management and controlled burning. This effort restores and maintains the unique habitat found here and helps reduce the threat of wildfire to the surrounding towns. Carefully controlled burns eliminate dangerous accumulations of leaf litter and flammable vegetation that could burn out of control if set ablaze by a lightning strike. After a fire, scrub oak and blueberry produce vigorous new growth which provides a highly nutritious food source for wildlife, including rare moths and butterflies—five species of which are found

nowhere else in New Hampshire. Like the plants, these insects have evolved with fire; some survive the burn season by burrowing into the soil.

You Can Be a Citizen Scientist! These lands serve not only as a

unique place to hike and explore, but also as a living laboratory for student education and scientific study. Research adds tremendous value to the work and isn’t limited to students and scientists. You can also participate in collecting valuable data to assist with conservation and management efforts just by using your smartphone or camera! While on your preserve hike, help the Nature Conservancy learn more about the plants and animals on the preserve by documenting what you see on the iNaturalist page. You can also visit a Picture Post. Each post guides visitors to photograph a location in nine orientations. Photos are dated, geotagged, uploaded and shared online to assist in environmental monitoring. The process is easy, and instructions are located right on the Picture Post. For Picture Post locations, see the map on page 36. For more on all the ways you can engage with the preserves, visit http://naturenh.org/CitSci.

    Our Towns

A Region for Every Season...A Region for Every Season...

As the snow melts, everything starts to transform – and rapidly! Streams turn into gushing torrents and fishing season opens, plants begin to emerge, and migratory birds return. Sap begins to flow in the trees and the sweet smell of maple sugar wafts from local sugar houses – usually open in March for a delicious treat of sugar-on-snow. Slip on your mud boots, swing your binoculars across your shoulder, pack up the camera and fishing gear, and get outside.

The perfect blend of mountains, valleys, lakes and rivers invites the summer visitor to do all or nothing. Take a hike or a nap, play a round of golf or cards, sail a boat or sit around a campfire, rummage around antiques stores or catch up with friends at a local restaurant – there’s so much from which to choose!

This is the season of fairs, festivals and concerts, a time for full moon kayaking, picking berries for home-made pies, conquering peaks and kicking up your heels at a contra dance. It’s also a chance to rejuvenate, to swing in a hammock, rock on your porch, spread your towel on a sandy beach, watch the eagles fishing and listen to the call of the loons.

A Region for Every Season...A Region for Every Season...

You’ll find every conceivable winter recreation here from miles of maintained snowmobile trails, groomed ski hills and untouched woods for bushwhacking in your snow shoes. The lakes and ponds transform into glistening mirrors of ice, luring fishermen, skaters and cross-country skiers. Hiking trails transform into multi-purpose byways - you may even get to see a sled dog race in action!

Winter time is holiday season and most area towns celebrate with traditional concerts and open-house craft fairs where you’ll find gifts for everyone on your list, and you will have the added pleasure of meeting the person who made it.

Leaf peeping season is awesome and abundant, with nature’s bounty on full display to tantalize all your senses. Taste the delicious and nutri-tious produce from small area farms. Capture the sights of the spectacular landscape in your photos or memories.

The area’s scenic roads wind through hills ablaze in color and past small farms offering apples, honey, pumpkins and grass-raised dairy and meats. Pick up a copy of the area’s antiques touring map from the GOACC information booth and find yourself a genuine piece of local history to take home.

The Sandwich Fair is the last of NH’s agricultural fairs, held every Columbus Day weekend in Center Sandwich. It at-tracts young and old from near and far with its domestic animal events, pro-duce displays, rides, games, a parade and of course, fair food!

GOACC 2019 Business of the Year : Beaver Hollow CampgroundGOACC 2019 Business of the Year : Beaver Hollow Campground

Sandy Allan pur-chased Beaver Hol-low campground in 2007. After numer-ous necessary in-

frastructure investments, such as re-placing the power system and adding a new pool, Sandy has been able to rejuvenate the Campground and bring added economy to the area. He began with just two employees and now has 7 seasonal staff, managed by Jean Hewitt. The staff strives to provide a family friendly camping adventure to their 135 sites.

In 2014, Sandy and staff wanted to contribute in some way to the com-munity. They began the campground’s summer series of fundraisers to ben-efit the Jimmy Fund. Donations are raised by campers, staff, and volun-teers completely within Beaver Hollow Campground. Sandy and Jean work to gather prize donations from local busi-nesses. Campers and staff also make donations. Over Labor Day weekend the staff runs games and events such as Golf Cart races, T-shirt sales, bingo, and motorcycle rides. Labor Day week-

end is a big earning event culminating in the Duck Dunk. The idea is taken from the popular Duck Race. Howev-er, Beaver Hollow style has the ducks placed in the campground pool. One of the staff then rides the slide into the pool and the first duck grabbed is the winning duck!

In 2015, Beaver Hollow Campground decided to focus even more locally on the summer series fundraiser recipi-ents. Their donations since have been split between the Jimmy Fund and the GOACC’s Higher Education Scholarship Fund. To date, the GOACC’s Scholar-ship has received just over $17,500.00 from Beaver Hollow.

People who know Sandy have said he is a fantastic man to work for. He is a very nice guy, and he runs a fam-ily-friendly campground. Sandy cares about his staff, and campers alike. His priorities are safety for his camp-ers and keeping the focus on a family oriented campground; Sandy and his team work in a collaborative way to promote a family friendly stay at Bea-ver Hollow Campground.

Chamber Business Person of the Year: GERARD COSTANTINOChamber Business Person of the Year: GERARD COSTANTINO

Gerard Costantino started in the real estate business 24 years ago with a small firm, and in the local Ossipee RE/MAX. In 2009, during the reces-sion, Gerard opened Costantino Real Estate LLC. At that time it was Gerard and two other realtors. Today, Costan-tino Real Estate has 9 agents and he has been fortunate enough to have top market share locally.

Costantino Real Estate has been a strong supporter of the GOACC through Gold Sponsorship of the An-nual Scholarship Fund Golf Tourna-ment and our other fundraisers. In addition, Gerard supports many local community events such as; the Cor-nerstone Academy, Celebrate Life and the Bearcamp Valley School.

One of the first things Gerard learned when new to the business was how important it was to stay con-nected locally through various events and activities, such as the Greater Os-sipee Area Chamber of Commerce.

As a continuous supporter of com-munity, Gerard has shown his pride in the Chamber’s growth and accom-plishments over the years. He contin-ues to recommend the GOACC mem-bership to business leaders he meets, knowing they will get back their invest-ment in our community.

His peers praise him as a sup-portive leader, with a good sense of humor, which makes for an excellent work atmosphere.

  • 44 | GREATER OSSIPEE AREA Chamber of Commerce

When first chartered in November 1977 the Greater Ossipee Area Cham-ber of Commerce (GOACC) committed to its members and the community at large to stimulate economic, cultural and recreational interests within the townships of Effingham, Freedom, Madison, Ossipee, Sandwich and Tam-worth. As we continue to sustain this vision by constantly monitoring and striving to improve the business en-vironment locally, the current GOACC Board of Directors works extremely hard to publicize and promote in a tasteful manner the commercial in-terests and attractions of our beloved area.

Business owners are encouraged to participate in many GOACC projects and events, designed not only to high-

light and promote their own company initiatives, but also intended to cap-ture the collective entrepreneurial spirit of our neighborhood.

Each year scholarship monies are presented by the Greater Ossipee Area Chamber of Commerce to adult students.

The object is to offer financial as-sistance in the form of scholarships to area residents who will be attend-ing higher education institutions in the fall of each year. Eligible people must physically reside in the towns of Effingham, Freedom, Madison, Os-sipee, Sandwich, or Tamworth and be pursuing a higher education degree/certification.

The Greater Ossipee Area and its Chamber members host events throughout the year for the community and visitors to attend. Listed in the guidebook’s calendar are some of the many happenings for every season. To find more events in the area go to: www.ossipeevalley.org/events.html. In addition, the GOACC manager is sharing information every day on Face Book: Goa Chamber.

    EventsEvents

Business ExposExposThroughout the year, the Chamber hosts a “Business to Business Expo” showcasing five to six of our members as exhibitors, and catered by a member business. The Board of Directors believes it is more productive to offer fewer, higher quality events, to provide valuable networking opportunities to member businesses and the public.

    • Multiple owners can now showcase their businesses by sponsoring an event.• With many people invested in the success of the event, better attendance and more participation occur.

    • Because of increased attendance, better networking opportunities have been created for our members.

The GOACC website www.ossipeevalley.org is an invaluable tool for members and visitors alike. With cutting edge, industry proven traffic driving initiatives, the pages of the website are popping up high on the lists of search engines all over the internet. The Greater Ossipee Area Event page, flashing banner ads, and reciprocal links are examples of GOACC’s ongoing commitment to the marketing medium of the future. Each member is listed on the site, with a short description and a link back to their own website where more detailed information can be found.

There is a buzz within the valley that a GOACC event should not be missed. If you would like a chance to “meet and greet” with the business leaders of the GOACC, check out the schedule at ossipeevalley.org and join us at our next Business Expo!
