“BE STILL AND KNOW….”

About a hundred yards from ourfront porch, there is a stump in themidst of the hardwoods on our veacres. It’s a good stump and it is agreat place to have a seat andponder things. (I like the wordponder!) On a chilly day last week, Iwas pondering on my stump and theverse from Psalm 46 came to mindand I began to reflect on what ismeant to “be still and know that I amGod.”

The rst thought that comes tomind is this isn’t a suggestion—it’smore like a command. Be still! I’m reminded of the earlydays of rearing children and how many times I“commanded” my children to be still. As I remember, theydidn’t listen any more than we do when we hear thiscommand, be still” in the Psalms. What is it about uswhen we can’t “be still” long enough to “know God”? Isn’tthat what we Christians are to be about in our journey? It’s what saints do! To know God, to love God, and tomake God known! That’s a basic directive to each andevery Christian.

To “be still and know that I am God” is important forour growing in the knowledge and love of God. Or, at leastit should be! It implies that in order for us to “know” Godwe need simply to be quiet (which is how most of usunderstand stillness to be). But, it is more than beingquiet. It requires us to stop what we are doing, completely, and focus on God. It’s rather like repentancein that regard. Repentance is not about feeling sorry forwhat you have done wrong (although that’s important). Itis about stopping what we are doing and changingdirection. Quit doing what you are doing and go inanother direction. Preferably the direction God calls usinto through his son, Jesus Christ.

This past year has been an enormously challengingone for many people and, in many ways, we do not knowfor certain what the future holds politically, economically, and culturally. But what we do know for certain that it isGod’s world, it is God’s life that he has given to each ofus, and it is his only son, Jesus, who can show us theway, the truth, and the life. We can be certain of God’sunending love and mercy for each of us and for theworld.

To “be still” is torecognize how out-of-control our life hasbecome, overwhelmed bythe things of this world, and change our direction. We need only to turn onthe TV, or read our Twitteror Facebook account(ugh!), to realize howuninformed we are of thethings of God and moreinformed by the things ofthe world. What denes us

in the modern age? Where is that peace that passes allunderstanding? Only we can make that change, consciously and intentionally, to “be still and know that Iam God.”

You’d be pleasantly surprised what you can hear andsee when you are truly “still.” In my small part of theworld, on my stump, I can actually hear deer crunch thecorn I put out for them. Or, I can hear the songs of theCarolina Chickadee and the Cardinal calling to their mates. It is amazing how cleansing stillness can be. Throughthese creatures of God’s songs, I am guided to a placewhere I sit in awe contemplating God and all God’swondrous works. Guided to a place where I can begin tobe touched by God’s mystery and power, an experiencethat can draw me into a deeper understanding of themighty works and what God continues to do through hisson, Jesus Christ, and in the power of the Holy Spirit. ThePsalmist was right—“he is exalted in all the earth.” As aresult, God is exalted in my heart, too.

As we begin the New Year, it is my hope and prayerthat each of you will nd a time and a place “to be stilland know that I am God…” so that you, too, may exaltGod in your heart and that you nd that “peace thatpasses all understanding.”

May God bless and keep each of you and may thelight of his countenance shine upon you, my dearBrothers Andrew.

BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS, JOSHUA!

Considering what we allexperienced during 2020,perhaps we should all writedown this simple commandfrom the Lord God Almighty.Post it somewhere that youwill be forced to look at it daily.

First, let me offer ourprayers for all those departedbrothers and sisters who havebeen welcomed to theheavenly gates. For us whoare still here, grieving, and forothers offering prayers for the hospitalized. For thoseidentied as having COVID-19, know we are all lifting upprayers to our Heavenly Father on your behalf!

Now that vaccines are being distributed, a light at theend of the tunnel seems to be getting brighter. While wewait patiently for conditions to improve, this is a period oftime for those of us in the men’s ministry community tocontinue to embrace our Brotherhood of St Andrew rule oflife: Prayer, Study and Service.

What lessons have we learned so far from thepandemic? Isolation can be gut-wrenching, horrible attimes, and—for some—more than they can endure. Inspite of the hardships so many are facing, each day when Iopen Forward Day by Day, I am reminded just howhumbling it is to be in God’s service. For those of usinvolved in Brotherhood of St. Andrew ministry, there areso many positive, encouraging signs of hope andopportunities all around us. Here are just a few.• Good, old-fashioned Telephone Trees at the parish

level still work great for staying in touch—especiallywhen you reach our beyond your usual men’s ministryparticipants and call every man in the parish. At theend of these conversations, ask each one: How can wepray for you?

• Zoom, or other video conferencing platforms, can beawesome. Some reports indicate Chapters that beganmeeting monthly via Zoom during the pandemic, quickly became comfortable with videoconferencingand even decided to meet twice monthly or weekly. One idea: Chapters can form their own technicalsupport unit of younger persons in their parish to make

house calls for those who aremore inexperienced computerusers to set up their computer forthese meetings. If you are in avery small parish or are withoutvideo conferencing knowledge orcapabilities, you can reach out toyour Brotherhood of St. AndrewDiocesan Coordinator, ProvincialPresident, or the NationalBrotherhood Ofce forinformation on set up OR to be

connected with another Chapter’s Bible study sessions.• If your Chapter is already meeting on Zoom, considerinviting your clergy to your video gatherings, then offerthis supportive prayer for them: O Lord Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd, you laid down your life for thesheep and appointed others to feed your flock: Giveour Pastors and other clergy the grace they need day-by-day to faithfully to carry out the demanding dutiesof their scared calling. Fill them with love for the soulscommitted to their care; inspire them with wisdom forthe guidance and instruction of those who seek theiraid; and, in all things, help them and us whom theyserve to glorify you by the good example of Christianlives. Amen

• We love this idea for your Chapter secretary. Makesure you have a record of everyone’s birthday andcommit to sending cards to emphasize a caringattitude.

• Service work abounds including feeding the homeless, taking a shut-in food, or offering a ride to thepharmacy or doctor’s ofce. Any acts of kindness willbe especially welcomed these days. (Just remember toobserve COVID safety guidelines.)

• With our Brotherhood subscription to ChurchNext TV(a benet made possible by your annual Brotherhoodof St. Andrew ministry pledge), you can nd spiritualdiscussion groups or individual study opportunities. Formore information, email [email protected]

Do you remember“Y2K?” At the turn ofthe 21st Century therewas much hullabalooabout whethercomputers would workas we went from 1999to 2000. The artist,Prince, took a song to#1 on the Billboardcharts related to thisperiod of time. As Ichatted with my child over the Christmas break, sheremarked about the opportunities a new decade wouldbring her. Indeed, the new decade brings opportunitiesfor all of us.

In this mutual ministry you and I share, we stand onthe threshold of continued growth, rebirth, andpartnership across denominational lines. We continue tofocus on regional efforts through your ProvincePresidents, outreach at national conferences, andsupport at the local Chapter level.

For me, the year ahead will hopefully involve moreand more in-person face time with clergy and laity at thelocal levels in their own parishes. Earlier this month, Iwas reminded in a conference call with one of ourbishops just how important our ministry is, what ourface of evangelism looks today, and the value we offerany parish wanting to grow the ranks of active laymenand youth in the church. Our ministry, as I wasreminded, is one of substance for men. It’s much more

than just breakfast ordinner each month.

I continue toreach out by phoneto every newmember applicationthat comes throughto build a connectionfrom top to bottomat the very onset ofa Brother’s new

membership with us. Relationship building is everythingto us. If you haven’t seen it yet, follow the link below tohear what one of our national presidents back in the1930’s had to say about relationship and witness. Hereare our brief remarks to the House of Bishops back inSeptember, 2019: www.YouTube.com/embed/1y9CObHwX84.

Just as we asked the clergy, we ask you. How mightwe help work with any combination of our sevenministries to grow awareness of who we are, what wedo, and our place in 21st Century evangelism in yourparish? Please take a look here for more Chapter growthand development ideas, as well as those in previouseditions, always accessible on our brothersandrew.netwebsite. We continue to get remarkable feedback on theideas our editor, Kathy Copas, provides. Wishing youevery good thing in the year ahead, I remain,

A GROUP PRAYER FOR THE NEW YEAR

As your Chapter members regathervia Zoom, ask each person to writedown just one word that bestarticulates their hope for the NewYear. Have each Brother say the wordthey have chosen and ask eachBrother to keep a list of all of thewords named. At this point orfollowing other sharing or Biblestudy, have a time where eachBrother takes those words andwrites a line or two of a prayer forthe New Year. Then, have eachBrother read the line or lines theywrote, with a brief pause of silencebetween each Brother reading. Have agroup leader or volunteer conclude witha prayer of thanksgiving for the New Year.

As a variation on this (perhaps for anothermeeting?), ask your Brothers to each offer their besthope for your men’s ministry Chapter in the New Year.Repeat the process.GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER BETTER

As your Brothers gather for your next Zoom session, try one or more of these New Year-themed questions tolearn more about each of your Brothers.

• What is your strongest memory of ringing out anold year and beginning a new one? What was goingon in your life and the world at the time and how did itturn out?• What will you never forget about 2020, as we putthat year behind us?• What is your New Year’s resolution for your ownpersonal spiritual practice in 2021?• What do you see the church needs to do as webegin to re-emerge from the pandemic? What goodthings happened for this church out of the pandemic? What things do you hope we can hold onto as thechurch moves forward?

JUST FOR FUN…

A fun way to start outyour next Zoom meeting iswith a virtual scavengerhunt! Come up with a listof items related to yourchurch or Chapter, or eventhe pandemic, and askyour Zoom participants tohurry and nd them one-by-one.

Examples: A name tagfrom an old Brotherhoodfunction. An item depictingtheir favorite sports team. Amask in a color other thanwhite, blue or black. A golf ball

from a Brotherhood golf outing.A tool or other item once used for

a Chapter mission project. Anunopened package of toilet paper! The ideas are endless. The people who nd and return to their seat rst witheach of the items could win simple prizes such aspopcorn, candy, or even small gift cards (to be deliveredlater!). Use your imagination and enjoy some fast-movingfun as participants strive to bring their item back rst.

A variation on this… instead of doing a scavengerhunt involving the physical gathering of items, considerholding a sit-down Biblical scavenger hunt. Come up witha series of topics and ask participants to race to locate apiece of scripture that reflects that theme. Some simpleexamples: Find a bit of scripture having to do with a tree.Find a Bible verse with the fewest words. Find a Bibleverse that is in the form of a single question. Find somescripture having to do with a fountain. See how many“begats” you can locate and count in scripture in 60seconds. Find some scripture that mentions an animalthat could be a household pet.

This exercise is a fun ice-breaker that may alsocontribute to Biblical knowledge and discussion, as wellas building stronger friendships between Brothers.

REMINDER ABOUT COVID-RELATED MENTAL HEALTH ISSUESMental health issues related to the pandemic and quarantine are especially difcult for

people with depression and other mental health disorders. For example, the relapse andoverdose rate has increased by 30% since March of 2020. For those at risk, encouragethem that they are not alone and for them to call NAMI, the National Alliance on MentalIllness 24-hour helpline at 800-950-6264.

From Conrad Jones, Province III President,Brotherhood of St. Andrew

Editor’s note: During thepandemic the national andProvince leadership of theBrotherhood of St. Andrew hasbeen engaged in a project toreach out and make personaltelephone contact with many ofour Brothers church wide. Thisis just one of many remarkablestories of what happened whenmembers received calls. My Brothers,

If anyone has ever thought that our wellness"Project Reach Out" has been more effort than result, here's just one example of how our work is blessing usand our Brothers in Province III.

As I am nishing up my 121st call since mid-November, I was "pushed" to make one more call onthe Member-At-Large list for the Diocese of Virginia onDecember 30. I had called Brothers in Delaware, WestVirginia, SW Virginia, and Maryland. Something (weknow who) told me to make just one more call thatnight… and I did.

I won't mention his name, but I had been trying toreach a Member-At-Large in Halifax, Virginia, I'd left amessage and was calling back. When he answered thistime, he said weakly, "I'm glad you called.” Heexplained he had been in the hospital for a while andhad been diagnosed with Leukemia. He had just comehome under Hospice care and only had a short timelonger with us. I could feel his pain and his comfortedresolve in the same words. All I could think of to saywas, "Brother, can we pray?" And he said, "I'd like thatvery much". So, we prayed together for about veminutes and, after we nished, there was a silence thatI will remember for quite some time. After a fewseconds, he said, "Thank you Brother. That meant somuch. God bless you." And then I was speechless. Iknew I would likely never talk to this Brother again inthis life. God blesses us in so many ways and oftenwhen we least expect it.

So, if you've still got calls to make, or if you've lefta message but have not heard back, please try again. You never know what that Brother on the other end ofthe call may be going through. And the blessing that Ifelt I hope you all have felt, as well, when making calls.

Life is short. Never miss the opportunity to tellsomeone, "I love you" even if it feels odd. They mayneed it.

I love you all, Brother Conrad

By Ed Milbrada, Brotherhood Vice-President for Scouting

I've been an adult Scoutleader since 1993 when myson was in the rst grade.Over the years, I've hada lot of different roles inScouting: Cubmaster,Troop CommitteeChair, DistrictCommittee member,Council Committeemember and manymore. Currently, I'mthe Eagle Adviser fortwo troops and oneof the Episcopalrepresentatives onthe Brotherhood ofSt. Andrew National

Religious Relationships Committee. I'm also honored toserve as the Scouting Vice President for the Brotherhood. Why am I still involved in Scouting when my Scout is now32 years old and on his own? I can sum it up in a shortsentence:

Scouting helps prepare youth to make theethical and moral choices necessary to be men andwomen of character and to develop into Godly adults.

By that I mean that the skills and values that Scoutinghelps to instill are the ones I like to see in the men andwomen I associate with each day. Seeing those skills andvalues develop in the youth I work with in Scouting is themain thing that keeps me coming back. Let me illustratethis by a short example.

As I mentioned earlier, I’ve served as the CommitteeChair of a Boy Scout Troop. One of the roles of a TroopCommittee is to conduct what is called a Board of Reviewas the last step in the process each Scout goes throughwhen they are ready to advance a rank. It’s really fun tosee a Scout at his or her Board of Review for the Starrank look you straight in the eye and condently answeryour questions. You remember that just two short yearsago that same Scout, in the fourth grade and just up fromCub Scouts, would be looking at his or her shoes andspeaking so quietly you could hardly hear what they'resaying. How does Scouting help youth make this transition?I can think of several ways:

1) Scouting provides age-appropriate challenges. InCub Scouts, rank requirements are tailored to the abilitiesof each age. In Scouts/Brotherhood of St. Andrew, thereare so many opportunities available that the Scout can’thelp but be challenged. By facing a challenge andsucceeding, youth grow.

2) Scouting allows youth to grow in condence andmaturity. In many cases, Scouting is the rst time ayouth has the opportunity to relate with an adult who isn’ta family member or a teacher. Part of the change fromthe Scout looking at his or her feet to the condent Scoutdirectly addressing a Board of Review is a result of adultinteractions where the Scout learns that the adult leadersare there to support them as they face the challenges thatScouting provides.

3) Scouting instills values that help youth grow intomen and women of character. The Scout Oath and theScout Law concisely describe a value system that leadsyouth to character. In particular, Scouts promise to dotheir Duty to God in the Scout Oath and to be reverent inthe 12th point of the Scout Law. Also, the ReligiousAwards Program in Scouting helps youth learn moreabout their relationship with God through age-appropriatechallenges for Scouts from rst grade through highschool. For example, the recently approved EpiscopalReligious Awards help Scouts learn about an Episcopalunderstanding of the sacraments and how the sacramentsbring them closer to God.

4) Scouting lets youth fail safely. Some of my bestlessons came from failing at something I wanted to do. InScouts and Venturing, the youth are responsible forplanning and executing their own programs. By offeringScouts the opportunity to plan and execute their ownprograms, even when things don’t work out, Scouts learnhow to do things better the next time and develop thecondence that this knowledge brings.

As long as Scouting continues to provide this path ofgrowth and maturation as it has for more than onehundred years, I'll continue to be involved.
