BREADY,
STEADY,
BAKE! By Annie Jerreat and Zion Savage
On the 28th January, Year 4 made some delicious bread. They had a lot of fun and learnt how to make bread dough, plus they learnt how to knead it too.
An extra challenge was to make their own bread hedgehog at home and bake it there too. The chil-dren added different things to their bread to make the hedgehog spikes, such as pumpkin seeds or raisins.
Mr Tweedie, who is DT leader, said, “The Year 4 children rose to the occasion and proved they do-ugh not disappoint.”
Holly from 4P quoted, “I enjoyed making the bread and I think other people did too; instead of doing a hedgehog, I made a snail.”
Many children brought in the bread that they made at home. They were different shapes and sizes and looked really delicious. It was really interesting and the children got to taste their bread at school! Miss Unite explained that she was very impressed with the creativity of the Year 4 children and expects to see some of them on The Great British Bake Off in the future!
After trying their bread, the children got to write what they liked about their bread and if they were to do it again, how they would improve.

Super Synagogue
Visit By Ethan Ferris and Oliver Chandra
On Tuesday 3rd March and Thursday 5th March, Year 5 visited Westcliff Synagogue. Whilst there, they learnt about the Hebrews, a fascinating group of people who are similar to Christians but only believe in the Old Testament. They saw the Torah Scrolls and learnt why there is so much decoration. Some of them even got to wear kippahs, a special type of hat!
When we asked Mr Tweedie about the trip, he told us, “I really enjoyed it as I think it is important children grow a better understanding of differ-ent religions!” Ollie in 5F ex-plained, “While I was there, I learnt new things I didn’t know before!” Altogether it was a fantas-tic trip!

On 27th February, the chil-
dren had another enjoyable
day with Lesley from the
Basildon Youth Theatre.
They had a shower of
laughs, songs and dances.
Everyone agreed it was
another fabulously
entertaining session.
Mr Frazer, Year 4, explained
that he found the Year 4
session great fun but with
some serious messages that
the children listened to
carefully.
Kesia, from 6A, stated, “ It
was really fun and I loved
the silly dances!”
in PowerPoints and arti-
cles. Every child in the
school wrote a newspa-
per report regarding the
Mayflower voyage 400
years ago and some were
selected for display at the
Reading Rooms, along
with a collection of the
work from the day. Miss
Moore, the teacher who
organised it for the school
quoted, “My favourite part
was learning about new
facts about our surround-
ing area.”
All the children had an
enjoyable day and enjoyed
stepping back in time.
Marvellous Mayflower history day
By Rupert Duncan and Ava Harlow
On the 15th January 2020,
our school took part in a
Billericay-wide competi-
tion remembering the
Pilgrim Fathers who
sailed to the New World
(America) in 1620. There
was a variety of schools:
Brightside, St Peters, St
Johns and of course, our
school, Buttsbury.
The day started with an
interesting assembly so
that everyone knew
something about the
special voyage and event.
Then, each year group
carried out a range of ac-
tivities including different
styles of art and fashion,
representing the journey

Miss Carrol explained en-
thusiastically, “World Book
Day was great fun this
year. It was great to see
so many different cos-
tumes and particularly see-
ing lots of you bringing the
book along with you. The
activities in classrooms
were wonderful and really
creative - I loved seeing
the puppets, story jars and
scene boxes. I thought
that the librarians also did
a fantastic job helping
choose books and showing
the Year 3s around the
library. It was a great day
and shows how much we
love to read at Buttsbury!”
At the end of the day, the
children all created class
libraries and visited a part-
ner classroom to find out
what others had been up
to throughout the course
of the day.
WHIZZBANG
WORLD
BOOK DAY! By Ooviya Loganathan and Anika Gup-
ta
On the 6th of March, the
school celebrated World
Book Day in their funky
costumes. The costumes
were spectacular with a
wide spread of authors’
books such as Harry
Potter, Roald Dahl, David
Walliams and even some
hilarious Captain Under-
pants!
Throughout the year
groups, all classes did vari-
ous activities. These in-
cluded puppet shows,
tours of the library for the
year 3 and the whole
school participated
in drop-everything-
and-read. In addition,
the children ate a
special meal, that was
completely book-
character themed!
Year 3 Change
for Life!!! By Aisha Sarfraz and Kesia Crees
Year 3 took part in a day
called Change for life on the
24th of January 2020 at
Mayflower High School. It
helped to teach the children
how to maintain a healthy
mind and body.
The 15 children learnt about
several different aspects to
keeping their self healthy:
what they should eat; the ex-
ercise they should do and
how to meditate to keep calm
and maintain a healthy mind.
While learning they still got to
have lots of fun by doing sev-
eral different activities; games,
making fruit kebabs, races and
meditation.
Overall, it was fun and benefi-
cial for all the pupils. Much
was learnt and gained by the
year threes so we would like
to say thank you to Mrs Walk-
er, who took them; the volun-
teers, who ran Change For
Life and Mayflower School,
who hosted it.

Year 3 Open
Door By Sam Havis
On Wednesday 4th March, Year 3 had their annual
Open Door event.
The Year 3 children and their grown-ups had the
challenge of creating their own piece of art
inspired by David Hockney. David Hockney is a
British artist from the 20th century. He was born
9th July 1937 and was an important contributor
to the pop art movement in the 1960s. He is also
a printmaker, stage designer and photographer!
Using pastels, Year 3 painted their very own mas-
terpieces. Ethan from Year 3 described the Open
Door afternoon as, “exciting, fun and enjoyable.”
DANCE IN A DAY: MUSICAL
MAYHEM!
By Daniel Tanner and Lana Bailey
On Thursday 9th January 2020, the talented future dancers of Year 6
took centre stage as they faced their biggest challenge yet: learn-
ing and performing a dance… in just one day!
This dance was not just any dance. It was choreographed by the children themselves.—after a strenuous warm up of course! It featured songs from musicals, such as Matilda and Bugsy. The children involved proved they were not just talented dancers but quick learners too and rose to the challenge admi-rably! Those who were lucky enough to see their performance thoroughly enjoyed it!

Marvellous Mother’s Day
Sale
By Alex Lee & Jamie Jones
On 18th and 19th March, Buttsbury Junior School
held a Mother’s Day sale. There were lots of special
gifts available for the chil-dren to buy and the chil-
dren loved the chance to do some shopping!
Following this special event, Miss Carroll explained, “The Mothers' Day Sales were another great success. It was great to see the chil-dren so enthusiastic to choose their gifts and I hope everyone enjoyed re-ceiving their gifts.” We would like to thank the Friends Association for help-ing the children of Butts-bury School get something nice for their loved ones.
Year 3 Cave Man Day By Albert Longlade and Harry Weston
On the 11th February, Year 3 discovered the won-
derful way our ancestors - the cave men - lived.
The children learnt about their daily life, what
tools they made and where they lived. As you will
read, it seemed like they had an amazing time and
really enjoyed the day.
In the morning, they painted cavemen pictures
and made a fire by using flint and steel to create
a spark. Edith Longlade quoted: “It was really fun,
because you got to see what the Stone Age was
like.”
Then, in the afternoon they created tools from
sticks, stones and clay. Isabella from Year 3 stated,
“I really enjoyed. It was amazing.”
After that, they then took part in den making out
of leaves, sticks and wood.
What a wonderful time Year 3 spent learning
about the incredible history of the cavemen.
The engineer (Mr. Bickerstaff)
showed the children how cars
were created inside the German
Fiesta factory and how one error
could result in Ford shutting
down!
Mr. Seeney (who works in the
London Metal Exchange) showed
us the many jobs the government
requires and what qualities are
needed for each one of them. For
example, one of the jobs requires
many IT skills as it involves coding
and blocking hackers.
The photographer, Mr. Bridge, ex-
plained the stresses of his daily life
as a professional camera-handler.
Overall, the careers festival was a
knowledge-full ex-
perience for the
Year 6 pupils.

Careers Combustion By Yahia Asfour
On the 21st of January, Year 6 chil-
dren experienced an informative
hour of the day all about adult
jobs and what qualities are need-
ed for each profession.
There were a number of talented
parents who volunteered to help
representing a total of 9 jobs: GP,
photographer, engineer, bus driv-
er, hairdresser, artist, sports
coach, physiotherapist and gov-
ernment worker.
The doctor section was run by
Dr N. Sarfraz, who showed the
pupils many pieces of medical
equipment used by a GP: reflex
hammer, stethoscope and many
more. She also taught them how
they are used.
