Introduction

Innovate4Defence(i4D), Internship is a two-months-long acceleration program for students of Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) of India. It is an opportunity for them to learn about developing their ideas, creating innovative defence products and technologies, incorporating a legal entity and eventually becoming a part of the Indian defence ecosystem and procurement.

The Department of Defence Production (DDP), Ministry of Defence (MoD) has created the Defence Innovation Organization (DIO), which works under its Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) framework, to interact closely with India’s leading incubators to track & support Innovators / Startups / MSMEs working in the defence domain. It supports tech-driven firms opportunistically, to create, deploy and commercialise technologies for the Indian military and defence PSUs.

Cohort Size: 50 individuals

There is no fee to participate in this program. Also, no compensation will be provided to the participants. Stay of selected participants may be facilitated strictly on a need basis, at the discretion of iDEX.

Eligibility Criteria

To participate, the applicant needs to meet the minimum criteria as mentioned below:

1) The applicant needs to be an Indian national and 18 years or above of age.

2) The applicant needs to have completed at least two years of STEM higher education in institutes as mentioned in Annexure 1. Preference will be given to students currently studying for advanced STEM degrees (M. Tech, M.E, PhD, etc).

3) Applicants from IITs, IISc, NITs and other reputed colleges will be given preference, although deserving candidates with relevant skills and experience may also be considered on an equal basis.

Application Process

1) Interested candidates should submit their applications online by visiting idex.gov.in. Please note that this is the only way of applying to the program and no hardcopy application will be entertained.

2) Received applications will be evaluated and shortlisted by a committee consisting of DIO representatives. They may be invited to participate in coding or prototyping contests or other relevant exercises as deemed necessary by DIO for further screening purposes.

3) Shortlisted applicants will be invited to participate in the two-months full-time residential program conducted by DIO.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this acceleration program, the participants will be able to: -

1) Have an idea on how to approach extremely complex real-world defence related challenges

2) Create and build technology solutions for the problems/challenges faced by the Indian armed forces

3) Develop minimum viable products that match the requirements in an extremely short time without compromising on quality

4) Come up with a self-sustainable and scalable business model for the proposed solutions

5) Develop an understanding of the stakeholders involved, deployment & procurement mechanisms and ultimate mission value in the Indian defence eco-system

6) Explore channels to collaborate with DIO for funding opportunities and mentoring support

7) Get accustomed to Indian defence innovation ecosystem and their various initiatives for innovators.

On successful completion program, the participants will be awarded with a certificate of completion of the course, which may be used to satisfy the internship requirements of the student’s respective institutions.

Terms and Conditions

1) There is no fee to participate in this program and i4D is an unpaid internship

2) There will be no financial obligations on iDEX, DIO or MoD or any partners

3) Internship certificate will be issued only at the discretion of DIO after completion of the program

4) The structure and timeline of the internship is at the discretion of iDEX, DIO and may be changed as required

5) DIO does not take any responsibility for any expenses of any applicant for the internship, and all provisions are on best effort basis

6) In case on any dispute, the decision of iDEX, DIO will be treated as final and binding

7) Applicants are required to read and accept the declarations mentioned in the online application form carefully, before submitting.
