February is the month of love. Many stores are decked in red and pink. Children

exchange valentines with classmates, friends, and parents. Couples exchange

chocolates and flowers. Many head out for romantic dinners. It almost seems that

the only place where you don’t hear much about Valentine’s Day is in church, even

though the fest day of St. Valentine originated in the tradition of the church.

As Advent will be hosting a romantic candle light dinner the night before Valentine’s Day, I thought it might be interesting for us to learn a bit about the history of this day and use the occasion to remind one another that God’s love is the model for all types of human love.

First off, it seemed that a lot of parents named their sons “Valentinus” in late antiquity, because of the name’s auspicious meaning (“healthy, strong”). Trustworthy ancient sources mention several St. Valentines who were martyred on February 14. Two of them were executed outside Rome during the reign of Roman Emperor Claudius Gothicus in 269 A.D., at a time when persecution of Christians was common. A third Valentine died in North Africa, along with 24 converted soldiers. Unfortunately, that’s all the facts known among early Christians about the martyrs linked to this day. Unlike us moderns, Medieval Christians did not care much about historical facts. What they cared about were stories of miracles and martyrdoms, and the physical remains or relics of the saint. As a result, many different churches and monasteries around Europe – from Scotland and England to Spain, Malta, Czechia, Poland, and Greece – claimed to have bits of a St. Valentinus’ skull in their treasuries. For believers, the relics embodied the saints’ ongoing invisible presence and power. In 11th-century France, for instance, one bishop used what was claimed to be Valentine’s head to halt fires, prevent epidemics, and cure all sorts of illnesses, including demonic possession. As far as historians know, though, the saint’s bones did nothing special for lovers. By the Middle Ages, legends about the saint had multiplied, too. One of those legends tells of a Roman priest named Valentinus who was arrested during the reign of Emperor Gothicus and put into the custody of an aristocrat named Asterius. Asterius made the mistake of letting the preacher talk. Valentinus went on and on about Christ leading pagans out of the shadow of darkness and into the light of truth and salvation. Asterius made a bargain with Valentinus: If the Christian could cure his daughter of blindness, he would convert. Valentinus put his hands over the girl’s eyes and chanted: “Lord Jesus Christ, enlighten your handmaid, because you are God, the True Light.” That chant did the trick. The child could see. Asterius and his whole family were baptized. Unfortunately, when Emperor Gothicus heard the news, he ordered them all to be executed. In another legend, bishop Valentinus debated a potential convert and afterward healed his son. The rest of the story is quite similar to the first legend: He too, was beheaded on the orders of Emperor Gothicus and his body buried along the Via Flaminia. A third legend tells that Valentinus was arrested and imprisoned upon performing Christian marriage rituals and passing notes between jailed Christian lovers. When Valentinus tried to convert the Emperor himself, he was condemned to death. He was beaten with clubs and stones; when that failed to kill him, he was beheaded outside the Flaminian Gate. 2

Still – there was nothing in these stories that suggested St. Valentine as a lover or a patron saint of love. So how did we get from a beheaded martyr to love on Valentine’s Day? It seems that we owe the love connection of the day not to ancient church tradition, but to a Medieval poet: Geoffrey Chaucer, who lived more than a thousand years after the martyrs’ death. Chaucer, celebrated author of “The Canterbury Tales,” tied the February feast of St. Valentinus to the mating of birds. “For this was on seynt Volantynys day. Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make.” It seems that, in Chaucer’s day, people assumed that birds paired off to produce eggs in February. Soon, nature-minded European nobility began sending love notes during bird-mating season. Ever since, Englishmen and women used February 14 as an excuse to write verses to their love objects. The advent of the industrial age made things easier with mass-produced illustrated cards and pre-printed poetry. Then along came Cadbury, Hershey’s, and other chocolate manufacturers marketing sweets for one’s sweetheart on Valentine’s Day. Today, shops everywhere in many countries around the world decorate their windows with hearts and banners proclaiming the annual Day of Love. Merchants stock their shelves with candy, jewelry and Cupid-related trinkets begging “Be My Valentine.” I find nothing wrong with celebrating all kinds of love or friendship on February 14. And, thankfully, we will be serving Mexican food for dinner on February 13, rather than a beheaded martyr’s head on a platter. It never hurts, though, to remind one another that all human love – whether the charitable love or the affectionate bonds between family members, good friends, or lovers – has its root in God’s all-encompassing divine love. In the gospel of John, Jesus told the disciples that, “You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another” (John 15:16-17). This powerful statement reminds us that everything we have, everything we are, and everything we will be belongs to God. We are chosen to bear the fruit, the good news of Jesus Christ, to the ends of the earth. To spread God’s love, in word and deed, is our mission, our purpose as Christians. In this season of love, let us remember that central to the message of Christ are the unconditional love, acceptance, and grace of God. Since we are created in the image of God and are called to pattern our lives on Jesus, he becomes our model of love. When we model our lives on his, we might discover that the good news not only spreads outwards from us but that it spreads throughout our inner being, filling us with the love, peace and hope of God.

To my Advent family, We are now in the second month of the new year. By now most of us have adjusted to writing the date as 2019 instead of 2018. We have completed our week of Winter Sanctuary and a few of us are doing dinner for another church which has no kitchen facilities. Barbara Olson and I, along with our team, have volunteered to do this again next year, our fourth.

On to February. There are lots of things to celebrate but the one that stands out is Valentine’s Day. It is the day we let our loved ones know that we love them. Why wait for that day? Didn’t Jesus say to love one another, as I have loved you? That means more than our spouse, parents, siblings, children, and grandchildren. That means each other. We set aside our differences and work at accepting each other as God made us. I know that I have problems accepting some behaviors and attitudes that others exhibit, but this is my personal goal: to be more accepting. During Winter Sanctuary this bias comes out. Those that are dirty, uncomfortable speaking, have terrible table manners, in other words, not like us, and that makes people feel very uncomfortable. For those of us that were there several days we came to know these men and women and were actually happy to see them. I was at a meeting the other day and one of the ladies that was angry, sullen, and wouldn’t talk to us for the first four days during our week, was at the meeting as a spokesperson for the guests of Citrus Heights HART. She finally opened up one evening at our church by playing a modified version of Trivial Pursuit (more like a Jeopardy game) with Pastor Gabi and several others. She was shown love and acceptance and it made a big difference in her life. At the same meeting I found out that several of our guests now have jobs and five of them have been placed in housing. That is how God works. We don’t have to do more than open ourselves up to loving others.

Back to love. Don’t we love our church, our friends, our pets, the people we play games with, travel with, sing with, our country, our home, etc. Our capacity to love is endless, thanks to God and the emotion he placed in each one of us when we were born. Thanks be to God! Yours in Christ, Lanny

(Shirley Jackson) The month of February has so many wonderful qualities: Valentine’s Day, Groundhog Day, Chinese New Year, National Freedom Day, Ash Wednesday, President’s Day, Super Bowl Sunday, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and as a whole, February is the month we celebrate Black History Month in America. Despite the cold, February is very rich in content. This past month at our Winter Sanctuary, folks from Advent Lutheran as well as the community we support showed what the meaning of Teamwork is—many people working for a common goal and taking on many different jobs in order to meet that goal. We succeeded because Winter Sanctuary was important to us, and the whole community supported each other in attaining the end result—service to others. Teamwork within our Church body continues in February. From the Latin Februum, which means purification, we have opportunities to purify our vision regarding what Advent Lutheran can be and do in our community. Advent Lutheran is looking for a few folks that can be part of that vision by volunteering to serve on the Strategic Planning team. This is an opportunity to shape the next five years at Advent--if you are interested, please see Pastor Gabi for more information. Our Church is also looking for leadership by serving on the Council. This is another great way to serve Advent Lutheran as well as our community. It is a small commitment of time, yet the impact you will make by the vision you share will be huge. We need folks of all ages and experiences, no matter how recent or lengthy your being at Advent has been. If you are interested, please contact any Council member to discuss. We would love to see new faces taking the helm this year. Please prayerfully consider serving in either of these capacities. In Closing, let’s make February rich in Love by displaying the warmth of Christ in Citrus Heights!
