FROM THE DIRECTORS BOX

Saturday 7th December KO 15:00

The last three games have been a journey up the M3 motorway with the results being a 1-0 win, a 2-2 draw and a 3-1 lose. So with those journeys behind us it will be good to play at home for the next two games.

A warm welcome to our visitors from Shaftesbury and Supermarine. We extend our hospitality to the officials, players, staff and supporters from both teams. We hope you enjoy your stay with us and have a safe journey home.

Good evening or indeed good afternoon everyone. With the close proximity of fixtures and being pressed for time we have decided to produce a double header programme for the games against Shaftesbury and Swindon Supermarine.

The first of those games is the Dorset Senior Cup against Shaftesbury tonight. Last season we had a win of 3-1 at their ground in the quarter final of the cup and the season before we had a 7-0 win in the final. So let’s hope that we can keep up those winning ways for this game.

We have recalled Aiden Shepherd from his loan spell at Shaftesury for the last 4 games. At the game

I would like to thank all the travelling fans who make the effort to support the boys on the away games, it really does give them a boost to have that support.

We have had to say goodbye to Billy Maybury and wish him all the best at his new club and thank him for his time here with us at Wimborne.

Tony Grant, Chairman

against Harrow Burrough he came on as substitute and scored the one winning goal.

On Saturday we entertain Swindon Supermarine. At the time the programme is being printed they are 4th in the league and 12 points above us. Swindon will be a tough game but if we play like we can at home we will have the chance of scoring some points. We hope that all the rain we have had lately will have blown over and we will have a good playing surface for a good game of football.

Enjoy the game.

FROM THE DUG OUT

Every game especially away we are continually focussing as a group on how to mature away from home,

Hello and a warm welcome to our visitors this evening from Shaftsbury in the Dorset Cup.

This Cup Competition is important to us and gives me the opportunity to look at a few players on the fringes of first team as well as general game time for others players who need repetition of games.

We also welcome everyone from Swindon Supermarine on Saturday, it's great to be back at home after 3 games away in the London areaHarrow, Met Police and Hayes & Yeading.

As we are all well aware we have progressed well in this competition in the last few years but I'm aware that tonight we must be at our best and not to take our oppositions likely.

As always tough games and to get 4 points in those 3 fixtures with our away record in recent years, I believe is a good platform to take positives from the players and staff moving forward.

I understand this. He’s a great lad and been a loyal player especially to this club for many a year, but things move on and I wish him all the best in the future.

Enjoy the game, best wishes

especially as we have a nature of being very attack minded which is pleasing on the eye,but doesn’t always give you the rewards which, at the end of the day are points on the board.

Unfortunately Billy Maybury has left us, he felt he needed a fresh challenge.

Danny HolmesDanny Holmes

But I do believe it’s work in progress and the lads and staff collectively are pulling in the same direction to find a balance between scoring and conceding goals.

FROM THE CHANGING ROOM

We've had 3 very tough games up the M3 in 7 days, if before the Harrow game you had offered me 4 out of 9 points I probably would have bitten your hands off, so to archive that and also be 15 mins away from 6 points is a fantastic effort from everyone in between.

Hi all and welcome to the J & B Stadium for todays game.

Met police on the Tuesday, going 2-0 up and doing really well, credit to them the changes there shape and got 2 goals back to draw the game.

Hayes & Yeading, I thought we’re one of the best

The Harrow game was also brilliant that we kept a clean sheet away from home, and also had 2 players from the development squad involved in Aidan and Adwell, Aidan coming on and scoring the only goal of the game is a great achievement for himself and the development squad.

Best wishes

passing sides we have played this season and have got some very good players. Tony scored the goal of the game with a great header at the end of the game.

These two home games now give us a opportunity to rotate in the Dorest Senior Cup against Shaftesbury and look at some young players and then back to Swindon in the league will be a very tough game against a physical and well organised side.

I hope you enjoy both these home games.

In 2004/05 Shaftesbury entered the Wessex League and for the first time in 2005/06 entered the FA Vase and 2006/07 the FA Cup.

2011/12, Shaftesbury re-joined the Dorset Premier League, many changes happened on and off the pitch and the re-growth of the team showed as they started to shine year on year in this league.

2015/16 season saw Shaftesbury Football Club have a successful year for some time, under new management, the 1st team won the Dorset Premier League meaning promotion into the Wessex League (Div 1).

2016/17 season was the first return to the Wessex League since 2004 and with a more than expected performance through-out the season, a top three finish saw promotion to the Wessex Premier and Shaftesbury’s highest level of football to come in 2017/18.

2017/18 was a successful year for the club with retaining a position in the Wessex Premier League and also reaching the Dorset Senior Final, unfortunately with a loss to Wimborne Town. The final success of the year was to win the Salisbury Hospital Cup.

OUR VISITORS HISTORY

In 1908/09 season Shaftesbury formed a reserve side and also a mid-week league side known as Shaftesbury Wednesday. In the early 1920’s the first youth team was formed called Shaftesbury Athletic.

Shaftesbury Football Club was established in 1888 and the clubs first success was winning the League Cup in 1900 and then again in 1905/06 along with the League Title.

Shaftesbury’s next success was in 1932/33 season winning the Dorset Senior League, then the most successful period come in the 1940/50’s when Shaftesbury won 12 cup competitions in a 10 year period.

Shaftesbury then moved to the ground known as Cockrams in 1974, even today still playing here but in a slightly different located pitch due to the arrival of Tesco Supermarket.

Many more titles were won over the years with winning the League Cup in 1976, League Champions and Combination Cup in 1988/89, Combination Cup Winners 1994/95, League Winners 1996/97.

In Dave Webb’s first two seasons he managed to lead them to two playoff finishes and two semi-final defeats defeat’s, both at the hands of Merthyr Town, the first on penalties. Last season was something of a non-event as the squad struggled with some devastating injuries that were the main reason for a fourteenth-place finish and a much better season was expected in this 2015/16 season.

Dave Webb accepted the offer and along with his assistant at Highworth Lee Spalding, they were duly appointed Manager and Assistant Manager in May 2012 and quickly began the job of building a side ready and prepared for the tough season ahead in 2012/13 and beyond.

losing our position in the Premier Division for the 2012/13 season on goal difference.

Shortly after the 2011/12 season ended and after long discussions with Gary and Matt the outcome was that a new manager would be appointed for the 2012/13 season in the South & West Division One. Within a mater of days Highworth Town manager Dave Webb was approached by the club committee with a view of taking over the managerial position at the Webb's Wood Stadium.

The 2015/16 season saw a couple of wins in the FA Cup and FA Trophy that helped the club’s funds. The team finished the season in a playoff position and just as they did in 2012 and 2013 they unfortunately lost at the semi-final stage once more. On this occasion it came from a 2-1 defeat at Taunton Town but overall although a disappointing end the players did themselves proud and were unlucky to lose a game they dominated.

In mid-January the following season, 2017/18, manager Dave Webb departed the club and his assistant, Lee Spalding, took on the role of Caretake Manager until the end of the season. Come the end of the season Lee and his team finished in fifth place and a playoff position with a Semi-Final at Evesham United. After drawing 1-1 after extra time Marine went through 5-4 on penalties and a playoff final at third placed Wimborne Town. In another tight game, which ended 0-0 after extra time, Marine won 4-3 on penalties and won promotion back to the Evo-Stik South Premier Division and what will be the Premier South Division for season 2018/19.

The 2016/17 season saw a team shake up at the beginning with a few experienced players being released and a group of youngsters set to make their mark on the team and the Southern League. The players worked hard all season and all but for a late slip we could have made the playoffs as the team finished in sixth place, just one position outside the playoffs. In the Cups we had a couple of games in each of the major competitions, the FA Cup and FA Trophy, but was successful in winning the Wiltshire Senior Cup, beating neighbours Highworth Town 2-1 in the final.

The first season back in the Southern League Premier Division in 2018/19 was a good season. With the team growing in confidence as the season progressed, we put in some excellent performances against the top sides, but unfortunately dropping too many points against the teams lower down the table. But for that we could have finished somewhere near the playoff positions rather than the 11th place finish we achieved. All in all though, it was a good achievement to finish midtable in our first season back at this level.

For a fifth consecutive season we started the 2005/06 league campaign in the Southern League, with Mark Collier in his first full season as manager and Ian Howell as his assistant and the club had its most successful season to date with a fifth place finish and a place in the end of season play-off's. Unfortunately, the side lost in the playoffs to a strong Hemel Hempstead Town who went on to secure promotion to the Premier Division.

The 2006/07 season was a successful one as the team scrapped into a play-off place and duly went through to win 2-0 in the play-off final win over Taunton Town to take us into the Southern League Premier Division for 2007/08 season. The team were also successful in winning the Wiltshire Premier Shield with a 2-1 victory over Swindon Town in the final.

The following 2007/08 season, the first season in the Southern league Premier Division the side finished a very creditable 12th place and had something to build on. The 2008/09 season saw the team in the top six in January and they had an excellent FA Trophy run only losing in the last sixteen at Conference side Ebbsfleet. The cup meant the side having to play three games a week in the last month or so and dropped out of contention for a play-off place and finished the campaign in mid-table.

The 2009/10 season saw the team struggle for most of the campaign and it was only in March 2010 that they moved out of the relegation places with a run of good results and finished in fifteenth position, seven points away from relegation.

During the summer of 2010 the Executive Committee released a statement indicating that the team was likely to be disbanded and be disbanded from the Southern League due to a lack of funding. They informed manager Mark Collier that they couldn't give him the necessary assurances to finance another season in the Southern League and

appealed for the friends and supporters of the club to help with a survival plan.

To continue playing in the Southern League a new Executive Committee was urgently required, with new members and an increase in numbers who would commit to finding the required finance. The old Executive Committee and a few enthusiastic supporters met each week over a six-week period then in the second week of June 2010 a new committee was formed to take the club into the new season and in the Southern League!

A commitment to financing a playing budget was made by the new committee and Mark Collier accepted the position of continuing as club manager and began the task of recruiting a playing squad for the 2010/11 season and by August 2010 Collier was confident he had a squad of players that could compete with the remaining twenty-one clubs and maintain a place in the Premier Division come May 2011.

The 2010/11 season saw the club maintain its Southern League Premier Division status with a very creditable 10th place finish, but besides the solid league performance the team had an exceptional FA Cup run when they went further than ever before as they reached the Second Round and only lost 1-0 away to NPower League 1 side Colchester United. A memorable day for all connected to SSFC and its supporters.

A short while after this FA cup run the club accepted the resignation of Manager Mark Collier and Assistant Tom Jones in February 2011 due to personal reasons. Experienced players Gary Horgan and Matt Robinson took over in a caretaker role and rallied the players to perform extremely well and finish the season on a high with three consecutive wins.

The 2011/12 season ended in disappointment for the whole club when the team were relegated from the Southern Premier Division to the Division One South & West after finishing in 22nd place, although only

The 2000/01 season the team won the Hellenic League Premier Division championship title and the retention of the Floodlight Cup. With the championship secured the application to join the Southern League (sponsored by Dr Martens) was accepted. To secure promotion several ground improvements were successfully undertaken to meet the league's guidelines.

In 1994/95 under managers Alan Dyton and Leo Colucci we entered the Wiltshire Premier Shield for the first time and went all the way to the final only to lose out to Trowbridge Town. That all changed in the 1996/97 season when we won our first trophies since the club's merger when we defeated Devizes Town in the final of the Wiltshire Premier Shield and a successful season came to a close when we won the Hellenic Premier Division Challenge Cup with a win over Kintbury Rangers. Under the guidance of John Fisher and former Swindon Town stalwart Don Rogers in the 1997/98 season the team won their last two fixtures to secure our first Hellenic Premier Division Championship.

Clive's resignation came after a disastrous start to the season with twelve defeats from thirteen games. The club then secured the services of the vastly experienced John Murphy. John had managed

The football club was founded in 1992 from the amalgamation of two established Hellenic League clubs - Swindon Athletic and Supermarine. After the merger Swindon Supermarine regularly finished in the top eight in the Hellenic Premier Division.

Manager Alan Dyton informed the club of his decision to step down from his role because of work commitments so in July 2001 the club appointed Swindon Town's community officer Clive Maguire as first team manager and equally pleasing was that Alan decided to assist Clive that season. Unfortunately, Clive resigned his managerial post at the end of October and after acting as caretaker manager for three games Alan also left the club.

The committee promoted the club's Academy Director, Tom Jones, to the manager’s position but just a month later he resigned following eight defeats. A few days later former Cirencester manager Ray Baverstock accepted the manager’s position and the difficult task of saving the club from relegation. Ray began the daunting task of keeping the club in the Southern League which he duly obliged with a record seven wins from the last eight league.

The following 2002/03 season was unfortunately far worse than our first season in the Southern League and at the end of September 2002 John Murphy decided to relinquish his managerial position with the club rooted at the bottom of the league.

Although Ray returned briefly after reconsidering his position he was gone again within a couple of games. Tommy Saunders' footballing exile ended with the former Chippenham Town boss being unveiled as the man to take over at Swindon Supermarine shortly afterwards. Unfortunately, Saunders' reign only lasted a couple of months as he resigned.

Cinderford Town, Witney Town, Trowbridge Town and Cheltenham Town and had achieved a few successes in the Southern League. With John at the helm the team staged a tremendous come back in the league to ensure Southern League survival.

The 2003/04 season started so differently from our first two seasons in the Southern League. With Ray and his team at the helm the team started very well with 18 points and a mid-table position by the end of October 2003. So it was a complete shock to everyone at the club when Ray decided to step down at this time due to personal commitments.

His Assistant, Mark Collier took over the job for the following game against Stourport Swifts and duly led the side to their first victory in seven games. Following that win Mark was offered the position as manager which he accepted and took us to safety with a 17th place finish in the Western Division and Southern League football for the 2004/05 season.

Hayes & Yeading 3-1 Wimborne Town

After excellent team performances at Harrow and Met Police, a third visit to London in eight days was a trip too far for The Magpies, as they were well beaten by Hayes and Yeading. Tony Lee scoring a consolation goal in time added-on.

On a large and beautifully manicured grass surface, manager Danny Holmes brought James Stokoe into his starting line-up in place of Curtis Young.

With lots of movement, Hayes were playing the ball around nicely in midfield. When Wimborne did have possession the final ball lacked quality or they were closed down before getting a shot away.

Wimborne reached half-time without conceding

The hosts took the lead on 35 minutes. Right-back Jake Sheppard picked out Buchanan by the penalty spot, he controlled the ball on his chest before swivelling to fire the ball into the corner of the net.

Three minutes later, referee Tom Ellsmore spotted a push on Aaron McCreadie on the goal-line as he challenged for a floated cross. Plain kept Wimborne in the game by saving Ogo Obi’s well-placed spot-kick at the foot of his post. Captain Sam Poole cleared Hayes’ next attack before Plain had to scramble backwards to tip over Sheppard’s audacious effort from the right touch-line.

The home side’s Scott Donnelly had the first attempt on goal after 8 minutes, his 20-yard curler from the right bouncing off the top of Cameron Plain’s cross-bar. A minute later, Holmes had to bring on Stefan Penny to replace a limping Paddy Hester. Donnelly then fired a 25-yard free-kick over the bar, before Plain made a brilliant double-save – first from James Clark from the edge of the box, and then the close-range rebound from the experienced Elliott Buchanan, although the lineo (all three officials were named Tom) spotted an offside.

RECENT MATCH REPORTS

Manager Holmes brought on Connor Doe to replace a limping Stokoe after the interval. Wimborne made a brighter start to the half: Luke Burbidge combined well with Penny and Antonio Diaz down the left but they were crowded out before firing at the target, and then Burbidge played in Sam Bayston to cross for Lee whose shot was blocked.

further. As he tried to get some feeling into his cold fingers, your reporter noted that referee Ellsmore had not given one free-kick against the home side, despite Lee being pushed over and a clear hand-ball, and the visitors had not had one attempt on goal in the first period.

However, the optimism generated by that start was deflated on 49 minutes. Obi’s cross from the right by-line was headed back to McCreadie who beat Plain from 12 yards. Manager Holmes brought on Aidan Shepherd for Sam Bayston, and the young substitute was straight into the action-forcing a corner, home keeper Jack Smith making an excellent catch. Shepherd’s quick feet made an opportunity for Lee but his attempt was blocked.

Home supporters didn’t have to wait long for a third goal. On defensive duties on the right, Lee slid in to prevent a cross but the ball hit his arm and that was enough for referee Ellsmore to point to the spot. Donnelly made no mistake with this one.

Wimborne Town: Plain, Hester (Penny 9′), Byrne, Davidson, Poole, Pettefer, Stokoe (Doe 45′), Diaz (yc 76′), Lee 90+4′, Burbidge, Bayston (Shepherd 57′)

Overall, a rather insipid and tired looking performance left The Magpies looking distinctly second-best against a good footballing side who, on this showing, will soon be moving up the table.

Lee headed a Burbidge free-kick wide with 10 minutes remaining, but that turned out to be a sighter. Four minutes into time added-on, Lee won a free-kick wide on the right. The striker was then in the box to head home Burbidge’s cross. It was small consolation, but a positive note at the end of the game.

Unused Subs: Walsh, Young : Att: 201

By now Hayes and Yeading were in control of the game. Substitute Omar Rowe’s cut-back from the right found Buchanan only for his blistering goal-bound shot from 12 yards to pole-axe his own player Clark. Moments later McCreadie chased back to dispossess Penny, then link with Rowe and Donnelly before the latter spurned a really good chance by shooting over.

minute, Lee could only head wide Maybury’s cross on the overlap. In the third minute of time added-on, Lee thumped an unstoppable drive against the underside of Forster’s bar from 20 yards. The ball bounced down near the line, but with officials thirty yards away, Wimborne’s appeals for a goal were waved away (where was a Russian linesman, let alone VAR, when you needed one?).

Both teams will think they could have taken all three points, but neither team deserved to finish the evening empty-handed. This was one of those nights when the real winner was non-league football.

At the mid-point of the half, the home side spurned the best chance so far. From a free-kick on the edge of Wimborne’s box, Jeremy Arthur rose highest but his header flashed wide of the post.

Metropolitan Police 2-2 Wimborne Town

Not surprisingly, manager Danny Holmes started with the same XI from the win at Harrow on Saturday. Billy Maybury and Stefan Penny were available again, and were on the bench.

Seemingly in control of the game after Tony Lee and Sam Bayston had given the travelling Magpies a two-goal lead, Wimborne conceded twice in the final twenty minutes at Imber Court. Was it one point gained or two points lost? Whatever your opinion, there’s no denying that this was a cracking game of football with 27 goal attempts and 19 corners.

On 13 minutes, from their fourth corner, a Met header flew past Plain’s upright. From Plain’s clearance, Burbidge shot wide, then helped on another Plain clearance for Lee’s shot to be saved. Wimborne almost took the lead on 16 minutes. Burbidge’s right-wing corner was headed down at the far post only for Byrne to twist and volley over from close to the goal-line. After Lee had had another shot blocked, Bayston ran 50 yards to stop the next Blues’ attack.

(Mazzone 74′ 82p’) (Lee 45+1′ Bayston 59′)

In the first minute Curtis Young set-up Luke Burbidge, but he shot wide. At the other end, Joe Byrne made a great block on a goal-bound shot, and almost immediately Byrne played a delicate ball over the top of The Blues’ defence; next Jack Mazzone turned and tested Cameron Plain from 20 yards, and the young keeper dived at the feet of the on-rushing forward in the next minute; before Lee won the race for another Byrne through ball with the young Met keeper, Rhys Forster, only to see a defender nick the ball off Burbidge’s toe as he was about to shoot. It was end-to-end fayre, and only six minutes on the clock.

RECENT MATCH REPORTS

Antonio Diaz and Burbidge created the next opportunity for the visitors, but dilly-dallied in the area before a Blue boot hacked the ball away. At the other end, that man Byrne somehow made a clearing header under Plain’s bar when running towards his own goal, he became tangled in the netting for his trouble. Some typical Burbidge trickery gave him space to force Forster into another save low at his near-post, before Plain saved from Ross Murdoch following a Met breakaway.

Then, when it seemed the half would somehow remain goalless, the visitors scored. A midfield one-two between Bayston and Burbidge, gave the former the chance to play a perfectly-weighted ball between central defenders. Lee won the foot race, and finished with aplomb.

Immediately after the restart, Sam Poole, as so often in this game, was in the right place to stem an attack. From the resulting corner, Arthur’s header flew inches wide of the post. On 56 minutes, referee Ions made the first of a number of controversial decisions when Burbidge was brought down on the edge of the home side’s penalty area. The nearest Wimborne players, and supporters, were adamant that the foul took place inside, but the ball was placed a blade of grass outside. Diaz’s chipped free-kick beat the defensive wall, but sailed harmlessly over the bar.

With the Blues chasing an equaliser, gaps were appearing in their defence, and, on 59 minutes, Wimborne took advantage. Bayston intercepted a midfield pass, played Burbidge through, and raced into the goal area to divert the cross past Forster. It was a clever finish from a difficult position. As the game opened up, Wimborne had more chances to seal the points. Young was denied by Forster after Burbidge played him through; Bayston rounded the keeper but could only find the side-netting from an acute angle; before Burbidge had another shot blocked.

The Blues introduced some fresh, even younger, legs, and they began to stretch Wimborne’s defence. With just over a quarter of an hour left, they pulled a goal back. Maybury and Plain failed to deal with a long ball on the left wing, and Mazzone had time and space to steer the cross into the unguarded net. And suddenly the whole momentum of the game changed. Plain saved from Mazzone, and Poole twice cleared crosses. But on 81 minutes, another cross ended with Luke Robertson stumbling over in the area, and referee Ions pointed to the spot. Mazzone emphatically buried the penalty.

Wimborne survived another, and in your reporter’s opinion, more likely penalty scare, before, in the 89th

Aidan Shepherd, recalled from his loan at Shaftesbury, came off the bench to score with his first opportunity on 69 minutes to bag a second league victory on the road for The Magpies.

With Connor Doe, Billy Maybury and Stefan Penny unavailable, manager Danny Holmes also recalled Will Prior to the bench, and included flying winger Addwell Chipangura from the Development Team.

Wimborne continued to probe the right-hand side with Joe Byrne and Carl Pettefer linking well with the attackers. Burbidge was inches wide of the far post just after the half-hour mark, but Lee was much wider of the target from 30 yards. On 45 minutes some typical Burbidge trickery ended with his shot going narrowly wide. There was still time for Harrow to mount a final first-half attack down their left. Marc Charles-Smith’s dangerous low cross was cleared by Poole, and Plain punched away the resulting corner under huge pressure.

The Reds seized the initiative at the start of the

Wimborne made a bright start against injury-ravaged Harrow. Curtis Young’s first-minute cross from the right forced keeper Hafed Al-Droubi to concede a corner; Sam Bayston’s low cross from the left was cleared; then Al-Droubi saved Bayston’s shot after a one-two with Antonio Diaz created the opportunity.

A feature of the half was the battle between, firstly Young and then Burbidge with Borough’s eye-catching left-back, Tom Scott.

Cameron Plain was called into action on 9 minutes to save low-down by his post from Lewis Cole, before Tony Lee helped out his defence by clearing a free-kick. In the next minute, at the other end, the non-stop Lee seized a high ball, made space for himself before his shot was blocked. Sam Poole’s header from the resulting corner was cleared. Young and Luke Burbidge then created another chance for Lee, with the home keeper again making a good save.

RECENT MATCH REPORTS

A special mention for Harrow’s seen and unseen band of volunteers who epitomise non-league football – from the couple in the refreshment kiosk to the guy who opened the ground at 8am and waited patiently for us to complete post-match interviews before locking up – thank you. Without you all, and people like you at grounds all over the country, we wouldn’t have non-league football.

Then, on 66 minutes, manager Holmes made a crucial substitution, bringing on Shepherd. Three minutes later, The Magpies took the lead. Sam Davidson brought the ball out of defence, played a one-two with Burbidge then fired it into the young substitute. He controlled the ball, turned and twisted, before rifling his shot into the corner from the edge of the penalty box. A cracking goal!

Att: 113

Harrow continued to press as they chased an equaliser, but they were vulnerable to quick counter-attacks. Burbidge had a shot blocked, and Diaz’s free-kick was kept out. The visitors survived a scare on 90 minutes when Cole’s low cross flew across the face of the goal. But having taken the lead, Wimborne were determined to hold on. And with their magnificent back five leading the way, a top team performance deservedly secured the points.

Full credit to both teams for providing the sparse crowd with an entertaining game in difficult conditions. The steady rain throughout the game made the surface greasy and increasingly heavy, and by the time referee Stokes blew his final whistle there were some really tired legs on the pitch.

second period. Jordan Ireland volleyed over; Wimborne’s defensive wall stood firm against George Moore’s 22-yard free-kick; and, on the hour mark, Plain made an outstanding save low down by his post from a header, and then caught the resulting corner under great pressure; before the young keeper showed assured footwork in dealing with an under-hit back pass. As soon as Wimborne’s hard-pressed defence cleared the ball, it was on its way back at them as the hosts seemed to pick up every loose ball.

Gosport arrived having lost just once in their last 9 league and FA Trophy games, and sporting the best defensive record in the division, so it was no surprise that they started confidently. But it was their former player, Tony Lee, who had the first attempt on goal after 8 minutes. His header from Sam Bayston’s knock-back going harmlessly over former Magpie, Pat O’Flaherty’s, crossbar. At the other end Cameron Plain was sent scampering across his goal after a weak clearance was sent goalwards by Chris Flood.

Gosport were winning the aerial battles in midfield, but when Wimborne played the ball on the ground it was a different story. And that’s how the home side’s goal, just before the mid-point of the half, came about. A defensive triangle on the left sent the ball to Bayston. He linked inside with Diaz who advanced into the penalty area, and with feet flying around him, the midfielder cleverly kept the ball before striking past O’Flaherty. Twenty-one minutes into your debut, and you score – a dream start!

Ryan Woodford’s headed goal deep into time added on bagged the points for Borough. But until the 84th minute it seemed the points were destined to stay in Dorset after new signing Antonio Diaz had given the Magpies a first-half lead.

In the last minute of the half, skipper Billy Maybury handled on the edge of his box. With three players over the ball, Gosport’s training ground set-piece fell apart and the ball was easily cleared.

Manager Danny Holmes brought Diaz into his starting line-up, with Carl Pettefer dropping to the bench.

Wimborne Town 1-2 Gosport Borough(Diaz 21′) (Paterson 85′ Woodford 90+5′)

On 27 minutes, Borough’s Matthew Paterson found himself with only home keeper Cameron Plain to beat, but his weak finish was easily saved. The young stopper then turned Rory Williams pile-driver for a corner before, at the other end, O’Flaherty saved Luke Burbidge’s drive.

RECENT MATCH REPORTS

Playing as the lone striker, Lee’s energy, enthusiasm, and aerial ability never allowed Gosport’s back-line to settle. And when needed he was back in defence clearing his lines. But the visitors were having most of the possession. Every time Wimborne’s defence cleared, the ball seemed attracted to a man in yellow, and back it came.

It was a desperately disappointing end to the game for the Magpies and their supporters, and, sadly, feelings ran high at the final whistle and referee Robinson showed red cards to two Wimborne players.

Wimborne Town: Plain, Hester (Penny 61′), Maybury (yc 45+1′ rc 90+6′), Davidson, Poole, Diaz 21′, Young, Doe (yc 52′ rc 90+5′) (Pettefer 67′), Lee, Burbidge, Bayston (Kellaway 87′) : Unused Subs: Stokoe, Byrne : Att: 406

Referee Robinson indicated a minimum of four minutes of time to be added-on. In the fifth minute he awarded Borough a soft free-kick wide on the left. Williams trusty left foot found Woodford unmarked at the far post and the defender powered his header home.

Gosport ramped up the pressure immediately after the interval with 3 corners in the first five minutes. Wimborne’s defensive wall had to be alert to keep out Williams free-kick on 52 minutes.

The home side’s best chance of the half came on 75 minutes. A one-two with substitute Stefan Penny put Bayston into the area with just O’Flaherty to beat, but he fired over the bar. And that miss proved costly.

With ten minutes remaining, Borough equalised. Joseph Lea’s low cross from the right was controlled by Paterson, giving him time to pick his spot and beat Plain from 10 yards.

Both sides went looking for a winner. Lee headed a free-kick over on 87 minutes, then shot wide four minutes later; at the other end Plain saved first from Paterson then Marley Ridge.

On the positive side, Wimborne at least matched the Borough, who will probably be vying for promotion this season, for most of the game. However, chances were always going to be at a premium, and if you don’t take them you get punished.

For Gosport, not only three valuable points, but also the Andy Culliford Trophy. Andy played for both clubs during his football career before being struck down with MND. It was great to see him at the game.

Shaftesbury is a town and civil parish in Dorset. It is situated on the A30 road, 20 miles west of Salisbury, near to the border with Wiltshire. It is the only significant hilltop settlement in Dorset, being built about 215 metres above sea level on a greensand hill on the edge of Cranborne Chase. The town is the home of Gold Hill (made famous by the “Hovis” advert). The first part of the name Shaftesbury is believed to be derived from the Saxon word sceapt, which meant point. The second part of its name is derived from the Saxon word burh, which meant a fortified settlement. Population at the last census was 7,314 and it is 20 miles from Wimborne Minster. Swindon began as a Saxon village. The name Swindon is derived from the Saxon words swine dun meaning pig hill or the hill where pigs were bred. Swindon is mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086). Its population is 226,900 (from the Office for National Statistics) and it is 66 miles from Wimborne Minster.

Swindon is enriched with Victorian parks, gardens & museums including the award winning Steam Museum, and an art gallery. You can discover the history of the Great Western Railway at STEAM Museum, learn about the history of various gadgets at the Museum of Computing. Swindon is also famous for the Magic Roundabout. Built in 1972 it consists of 5 mini clockwise roundabouts arranged around a sixth central anti-clockwise roundabout.
