Have you visited Haute Create? Haute Create makes state-of-the-art technology available to community members: virtual reality, computer program coding, 3D printing, and even food printing with the PancakeBot®. There are more than 20 in-person training classes offered on various technology topics such as Microsoft Offi ce navigation, tablet usage and résumé building taught by uniquely educated Library staff. Haute Create demonstrates that the Library is not simply a place to borrow books, but a vibrant hub of education and inspiration that benefi ts individuals in the Wabash Valley.

Technology such as the HTC Vive™ Virtual Reality system is very popular at the Library. This wireless headset allows individuals to experience more than thirty out-of-the-ordinary activities, from immersive games to exploring museums on the other side of the world. 3D printing is also offered on a consistent basis at the Library; customers can create sculptures, drone parts, toys, prototypes and more after the completion of an Intro to 3D Printing class.

Other pieces of technology used on special occasions or by request include the PancakeBot®, Singer® Curvy™ sewing machines, and the large format printer. The PancakeBot® allows customers to design their own edible pancake that is then 3D “printed” onto a griddle, whereas the Singer® Curvy™ sewing machines aid in the development of wearable technology.

The newest addition to Haute Create is the Dremel Digilab™ Laser Cutter LC-40. This professional-grade laser cutter and engraver will give customers the opportunity to create endless applications with materials such as wood, acrylic, and fabric. Demonstrations of the laser cutter and training classes for the public will begin in September.

STORYTIME

Children have one goal: to learn. From the moment babies are born, they begin taking in their surroundings and discovering new objects, concepts and people that come into their world. One of the most important milestones for every child is learning to read. By the time they are ready to attend school, it is vital that they are ready to read in order to absorb the new aspects of education available in kindergarten. How can you help your children prepare for reading?

Library storytimes are a great place to start. Each storytime is created with a focus on developing early literacy skills — skills that pave the way for young children to increase their vocabulary and expand their future opportunities. These skills, and the activities that help to grow them, are outlined by the Every Child Ready to Read program, which was created by the Association for Library Service to Children.

The 5 activities that prepare children to learn to read are:

According to Every Child Ready to Read, caregivers and children should partake in these activities to develop those early literacy skills further. VCPL uses a variety of activities during storytimes, including reading books, reciting rhymes, singing songs, and encouraging young bookworms to play with one another in order to prepare them for their personal reading journies. To encourage their journies, join any of the VCPL storytimes listed below.
