The Penguins have recorded the most conference wins (19) in back-to-back seasons since 2009–2010, and the most regular-season wins (32) since 2010–2011. YSU had seven players garner postseason Horizon League honors. That total matched the most in a season in school history; YSU also had seven players honored in 2007. Four Penguins were named to the first or second teams for the first time since the 2010 campaign. YSU earned its first Horizon League Tournament victory since winning the championship in 2014 with a 4-1 win over Oakland in the first round on May 23. YSU won its first season opener since 2010 with an 8-4 win at Belmont on Feb. 16, and swept a league opponent for the first time since 2012 when it won three straight over UIC at Eastwood Field on March 30–31. YSU drew a league-best 272 walks, shattering the previous school record of 234 that was set in 2013. The Penguins set the record in a win at Toledo on May 8, and finished 2018 ranked 42nd in the nation in base on balls. The Penguins recorded 86 stolen bases as a team last season. That total ranked second in the league and 30th in the nation. It is also tied for the second-most team stolen bases in a single season in school history. Youngstown State hit 44 home runs as a team, which ranked second in the Horizon League and as the third- most in a single season in school history. The Penguins finished the campaign with a 5-2 record against opponents from the Mid-American Conference. YSU notched two wins over Bowling Green and one each against Eastern Michigan, Ohio and Toledo. IF/OF Blaze Glenn reached base in 46 consecutive games from Feb. 24 through May 15, a streak that was believed to be the longest in the country when it ended. Trey Bridis hit 13 HR while Blaze Glenn had 11, marking the first season in school history in which two players hit at least 11 homers. Bridis and Glenn are also two of just four players in program history to record at least 10 homers and 10 stolen bases in the same season. Weekend Preview: The Youngstown State baseball team (0-3) will face its second straight nationally-ranked opponent when it begins a three-game series against Florida State (4-0) on Friday at Dick Howser Stadium. The Penguins and Seminoles will play at 4 p.m. Eastern on Friday, and at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Friday’s contest will be the first meeting between the two schools on the diamond. All three games will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra and WatchESPN while live audio will be available at YSNLive.com. Live stats will be available throughout the weekend through links on YSUsports.com, and fans can also follow @YSUBaseball on Twitter for live updates. Scouting Florida State: Florida State is No. 6 in this week’s Baseball America rankings and was No. 11 in the preseason USA Today Coaches Poll. The Seminoles began 2019 with four home wins over Maine this past weekend. Three FSU pitchers combined to no-hit the Black Bears in an 11-0 season-opening victory on Friday. The Seminoles, who finished 43-19 last season with an appearance in the NCAA Regionals, are led by legendary head coach Mike Martin, who is in his 40th and final season. Key returners include third baseman Drew Mendoza and left-hander Drew Parrish. Mendoza is FSU’s top-returning hitter (.313, 7 HR, 44 RBIs) while Parrish was 5-1 with a 2.52 ERA and 128 strikeouts in 2018. Parrish, who is likely to start Friday’s series opener, tossed five innings and struck out five in the no-hitter against Maine. Right-hander C.J. Van Eyk has moved into the rotation after earning Freshman All-American honors last season. Preseason Recognition: Multiple YSU players earned preseason recognition from various publications prior to the 2019 season. Junior IF/OF Blaze Glenn, senior RHP Joel Hake, sophomore IF/OF Jeff Wehler and senior 1B Trevor Wiersma were named Top Players to Watch in the Horizon League by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in its 2019 preview edition. D1Baseball.com projected freshman P/IF Travis Perry to be the Horizon League Freshman of the Year in its 2019 conference preview. D1Baseball also noted Glenn, Wehler and sophomore OF Lucas Nasonti as top draft prospects in the conference. Glenn was ranked the No. 7 prospect for the 2019 draft, while Wehler and Nasonti were No. 3 and 4, respectively, for 2020. Glenn was also ranked No. 56 on D1Baseball.com’s list of the top 100 draft-eligible hitters in the country, that was released this past fall. Glenn was the top-ranked collegiate player in the state of Ohio, and one of only two hitters from the Horizon League to appear on the list. Penguins Picked Fourth in Preseason Polls: YSU was picked to finish fourth in the Horizon League in a preseason poll of the league’s coaches as well as in projections by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and D1Baseball.com. The Penguins finished fifth in the conference standings in 2018 at 18-38 overall and 10-19 in league play. Wright State has been picked unanimously to defend its regular season and tournament titles.

2019 SCHEDULE NOTES

Game 1 (Friday, Feb. 15) / L 14-3:

YSU led No. 9 Mississippi State heading into the bottom of the sixth, but ultimately fell 14-3 in game one of a three-game series at Dudy Noble Field to open the 2019 season.

Trailing 3-0, MSU tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning before pulling away with an 11-run eighth. The Bulldogs outhit the Penguins 14-5, and recorded 13 of those hits over their final three at-bats.

In his first game as a Penguin, senior first baseman Trevor Wiersma went 2-for-4 with a single and a two-run home run while driving in all three YSU runs. Web Charles doubled in the contest while Cameron Murray and Jeff Wehler each singled.

Wiersma’s home run was the first hit in the newly-renovated Dudy Noble Field at Polk DeMent Stadium. More than 8,500 fans were in attendance as Mississippi State unveiled the brand new, state-of-the-art facility. The stadium’s renovation project totaled $68 million.

Colin Clark had a very solid outing, allowing three earned runs on four hits over 5.1 innings in a no-decision. The sophomore left-hander held the Bulldogs scoreless and surrendered just one hit over the first five frames. He retired 11 consecutive batters at one point while facing the minimum in the second, third and fourth innings.

Game 2 (Saturday, Feb. 16) / L 14-2:

YSU was held to just three hits and lost a 14-2 decision in game one of a doubleheader.

The two teams were originally slated to play game two of the series on Saturday and the finale on Sunday. However, the threat of inclement weather on Sunday forced the schedule change to a doubleheader on Saturday.

Blaze Glenn tattooed a pitch from 2018 first-round MLB Draft pick JT Ginn for a two-run home run in the first inning to give YSU an early 2-0 edge, but Mississippi State scored in each of its first five at-bats to take control.

The Penguins got singles from Phillip Glasser and Zach Lopatka while Glasser, Lucas Nasonti, Zach Farrar, Trevor Wiersma and Nick LaBrasca each walked in the contest.

Nasonti and Web Charles each made an impressive diving catch in the outfield for back-to-back outs to end the bottom of the first inning.

Mississippi State registered 14 total hits and eight different Bulldogs had at least one in the game. MSU pitchers held the Penguins without a hit in six different innings.

Chad Coles suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on six hits over two innings. Greg Dunham worked four innings out of the bullpen while Preseason Horizon League Freshman of the Year Travis Perry tossed two scoreless innings of relief in his debut.

Game 3 (Saturday, Feb. 16) / L 8-0:

In the series finale, Mississippi State scored in five different innings and shut down the Penguins’ bats to earn the series sweep with an 8-0 victory.

Cody Dennis, LaBrasca and Wiersma each recorded two singles in the game while Nasonti also had a base hit. The Penguins threatened in the fifth and seventh innings but could never break through. YSU left a total of nine runners on base in the contest.

In his first collegiate start, redshirt freshman Jon Snyder took the loss after allowing three runs on five hits and striking out five in three innings of work.

Cade Negley, Brett Souder, Lopatka and Joel Hake made their first appearances of the 2019 season. Lopatka worked a perfect seventh and fanned a pair.

First baseman Trevor Wiersma made an impressive diving play on a grounder in the bottom of the fourth inning. It was one of a number of defensive highlights made by the Penguins throughout the weekend.

SCHEDULE & RESULTS

Challenging Non-Conference Competition: In three seasons under Head Coach Dan Bertolini, the Penguins have not been afraid to challenge themselves by playing some of the best competi-tion in the country. In Bertolini’s first season in 2017, YSU earned wins over No. 17 Georgia Tech and No. 29 Kent State. Last season, the Penguins played a three-game series at No. 13 Louisville in late February before going 5-2 against opponents from the Mid-American Conference. This season, YSU will play two top-10 opponents in the first two weekends in No. 9 Mississippi State and No. 6 Florida State, and a total of 14 games against six different opponents from Power Five conferences. The Penguins will play mid-week contests at Penn State, Pittsburgh and West Virginia while hosting Ohio State and Pittsburgh at Eastwood Field. YSU will also play a three-game series next weekend at Tennessee Tech, which went 53-12 and reached the NCAA Super Regionals in 2018. In addition, the Penguins will play 10 games versus six different opponents from the Mid-American Conference this season.

Strong Start for Wiersma: Senior first baseman Trevor Wiersma had a very strong debut series as a member of the YSU baseball team. The graduate transfer hit .364 with three singles, a two-run home run and three RBIs in 11 at-bats over three games. He recorded seven total bases, a walk and a run scored with an OBP of .417 while slugging .636. He went 2-for-4 with a single, a home run and a run scored while driving in all three of YSU’s runs in the season opener on Friday. His homer came in the top of the fourth inning off MSU lefty Ethan Small. The Vancouver native drove in another run with a groundout in the sixth that gave YSU a 3-0 lead. He also re-corded pair of singles in the series finale on Saturday. Wiersma played in 145 games and made 140 starts over three seasons at Division II Concord University before coming to YSU. He batted at least .320 in all three seasons, and hit eight home runs as both a sophomore and junior. He was named the Mountain East Conference Freshman of the Year in 2016, and was a First-Team All-MEC selection as both a freshman and sophomore. Wiersma hit .362 with four home runs, 18 doubles and 49 RBIs as a redshirt freshman in 2016, and followed that up with a .331 average, eight home runs and 49 RBIs as a sophomore. He overcame a slow start in 2018 to hit .323 with eight homers while batting .386 over his final 88 at bats of the season.

Youth Movement: YSU has 10 freshman and 10 sophomores on its roster in 2019, and 16 of those underclassmen saw action in the season-opening series at Mississippi State. Sophomore pitchers Colin Clark and Chad Coles started the first two games of the series, respectively, and redshirt freshman Jon Snyder made his first collegiate start in the finale. Sophomores Lucas Nasonti, Jeff Wehler and Nick LaBrasca each appeared in the starting lineup while sophomore pitchers Dalton Earich and Cade Negley each made appearances out of the bullpen. Freshmen Marco DeFalco, Brett Souder and Travis Perry as well as sophomore Grant Kersh each made their first-career pitching appearances. Sophomore Zach Farrar and freshmen Phillip Glasser, Steven D’Eusanio and Dylan Swarmer each gained their first collegiate experience as well. Glasser started at shortstop in both games of Saturday’s doubleheader, recording his first-career hit in the first contest.

Clark Impresses in First Start of 2019: After earning the opening day start with a strong off-season, sophomore left-hander Colin Clark put forth a very impressive performance on Friday at No. 9 Mississippi State. He allowed three earned runs and scattered four hits over 5.1 innings in a no-decision. In only his sixth-career start, the sophomore left-hander held the Bulldogs scoreless and surrendered just one hit over the first five frames. He retired 11 consecutive bat-ters at one point while facing the minimum in the second, third and fourth innings. The game was tied 3-3 when Clark handed the ball to the bullpen. The Circleville, Ohio, native logged 37 innings in 14 relief appearances and five starts last season as a true freshman. He will take the ball again this Friday in game one against Florida State.

Hake Approaching Appearances Record: After working one inning out of the bullpen on Saturday at Mississippi State, senior reliever Joel Hake is now seventh all-time in school history with 77 career appearances. He needs three more to crack the top-five and nine to break the career record of 85, that was set by Ryan Sellman from 2005-08. Hake was YSU’s primary closer and led the team with 26 appearances last season. He also led the Penguins and tied for second in the Horizon League with a career-high four saves in 2018. The Youngstown native finished with a 1-1 record and a career-low 4.36 ERA in 33 innings pitched last season. He recorded a career-high 35 strikeouts while walking just 12 batters. In addition, his 9.55 K/9 in 2018 was more than a five-point improvement from the season prior. Hake was also named to the Horizon League’s 2018 All-Academic Team, holding a 3.65 GPA as a nursing major.

Glenn Coming Off Stellar Season: Junior IF/OF Blaze Glenn made quite an impression in his first season as a Penguin in 2018. The transfer from Sinclair Community College was named Second-Team All-Horizon League after ranking in the top 10 of the league in nine different of-fensive categories. Glenn led YSU last season with a .325 batting average, 64 hits, 13 doubles, 43 RBIs, a .558 slugging percentage and a .445 OBP. He was also second on the squad with 39 walks and 16 stolen bases; he was a perfect 16-for-16 in stolen-base attempts. The Toronto, Ohio, native reached base in 46 consecutive games from Feb. 24 through May 15, a streak that was the longest in the country when it ended. His 11 home runs last season tied for the fourth-most in a single season in school history. Glenn was the only Penguin to play and start all 56 games last season. His 56 games played tied for the most in a single season in school history, and he was the first Penguin to play in that many contests since Phil Lapari in 2013. He also became one of four players in school history to record at least 10 home runs and 10 steals in the same season.

Returning Firepower in the Lineup: In addition to Glenn, YSU returns three other position players who earned postseason Horizon League honors last season. IF/OF Jeff Wehler, 1B Nick LaBrasca and OF Lucas Nasonti were each named to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team last season, and Wehler also earned all-league second-team honors. Wehler led YSU while ranking second in the league with 25 stolen bases, and also posted a team-best 216 at bats in 52 games. He tied for the team lead with 13 doubles while ranking third with 25 RBIs and 71 total bases. He batted .282 with nine doubles, 17 RBIs and 15 steals against Horizon League opponents. Nasonti batted .264 with seven doubles, two home runs, 14 RBIs, 19 runs scored and nine sto-len bases in 10 attempts. The Warren, Ohio, native played in 42 games, 33 of which he started. After starting the season just 1-for-12, LaBrasca hit .328 over his final 22 regular season games. In 32 games and 15 starts, he batted .277 and slugged .422 with six doubles, two home runs and 18 RBIs overall. He hit .289 with two doubles, a home run and six RBIs in 17 league contests.

Pitching Staff Preview: YSU will begin the 2019 season with 16 available pitchers, only five of whom are upperclassmen. The Penguins are without veterans Collin Floyd and Zack Minney, who are both out for the season with injuries. Floyd, a left-hander who was named Second-Team All-Horizon League last season, ranked fourth in the league with a career-high 82 strikeouts and has recorded at least 50 K’s in each of the past three seasons. Minney, a right-handed relief specialist, has pitched in 39 games over the past two campaigns. YSU’s staff includes seven pitchers who made at least 10 appearances in 2018, and six pitchers who made at least two starts. Junior right-hander Greg Dunham returns after tossing 67.1 innings in a team-high 12 starts last season. Senior left-hander Zach Lopatka made eight starts in 2018 while reliever Joel Hake made a team-high 26 appearances out of the bullpen. YSU also returns a group of versatile arms in Colin Clark, Chad Coles, Kip DeShields and Dalton Earich. Each made 19 or more appearances and at least two starts a year ago. Coming off strong fall seasons, Clark and Coles started games one and two this past weekend, respectively. Hard-throwing freshman Jon Snyder made his first-career start on Sunday after being redshirted last season due to an injury.

YSN will stream all 22 of the Penguins’ scheduled home games and se-lect road contests. The partnership marks the first trek into the collegiate ranks for the streaming company, which currently serves as the sports broadcast home for more than 20 schools and six organizations in the Youngstown area. Each broadcast will feature stream-ing audio, and a static video stream from behind home plate will be available for home games at Eastwood Field. Students from YSU’s Sports Broadcasting pro-gram will have the opportunity to handle play-by-play and color analyst duties along with members of YSN-Live.com. All live broadcasts will be free for fans with archived versions available for purchase.

THE HEAD COACH Impressive Debut Season for Wehler: As a true freshman infielder in 2018, Jeff Wehler was named Second-Team All-Horizon League and to the league’s All-Freshman Team after starting 52 of YSU’s 56 games. He led YSU while ranking second in the Horizon League with 25 stolen bases, the most ever by a YSU freshman. He also became the first Penguin since 1988 to reach at least 25 steals in a season. That total is the fourth-most in a single season in school history, and only three freshmen in the nation had more steals than Wehler at the end of the regular season. He recorded a team-best 216 at bats, tied for the team lead with 13 doubles and ranked third with 25 RBIs and 71 total bases. He batted .282 with nine doubles, 17 RBIs and 15 steals against Horizon League opponents. In conference play, he led the league with 124 at bats while ranking second with 15 steals, third with nine doubles and fourth with 35 hits. He had 13 multi-hit games and eight games with multiple RBIs while reaching base in 17 straight games at one point.

Patience at the Plate: YSU drew a league-best 272 walks in 2018, shattering the previous school record of 234 that was set in 2013. The Penguins set the single-season walks mark in a win at Toledo on May 8, 2018, and ranked as high as 30th in the nation in base on balls. Trey Bridis drew a career-high 42 walks as a senior last season. He became just the second Penguin to walk at least 40 times in a season, and the first since Steve Mefferd set the record with 52 in 2001. Blaze Glenn’s 39 walks tied for the third-most in a single season in school history. The Penguins had 11 players walk at least 10 times while five players drew at least 20 free passes.

Smooth Criminals: YSU had 86 stolen bases as a team last season, which ranked second in the Horizon League. That total is also tied for the second-most in a single season in school history. It marked the first season since 1998 in which the Penguins stole at least 80 bases. YSU had three players who ranked in the top-10 of the league in stolen bases. Jeff Wehler ranked second with 25; Blaze Glenn was sixth with 16; Trey Bridis was eighth with 13. YSU’s eight steals at Northern Kentucky on May 11 tied for the second-most in a single game in school history and was just one shy of the record. It also marked the first time since 1986 that the Penguins had at least eight steals in a game. YSU stole at least three bases in 14 different games last season. Glenn, Wehler and Lucas Nasonti each had games in which they recorded three stolen bases in 2018, becom-ing three of just six players since 2000 to do so. Before last season, only one Penguin had stolen at least three bases in a game since 2003; Lorenzo Arcuri accomplished the feat twice in 2017.

Power Surge: Trey Bridis had 13 home runs last season; Blaze Glenn had 11; Andrew Kendrick hit nine. It marked just the second time in school history that three Penguins hit at least nine home runs in a season. Last season was also the first time in school history that two Penguins hit at least 11 homers in the same season. YSU hit 44 home runs as a team in 2018, which ranked second in the Horizon League and as the third-most in a single season in school history. It also marked the first time in school history the Guins hit at least 40 homers in back-to-back seasons; they hit 50 in 2017. YSU has hit a combined 94 homers over the past two seasons after averaging just 14.2 homers per year over the previous six campaigns.

Sitting Them Down: As a pitching staff, the Penguins registered 399 strikeouts last season. That total ranks as the fourth-most in a single season in program history. It was the first season since 2010 in which YSU struck out at least 350 batters. YSU had 11 different pitchers record at least 20 strikeouts, and eight different Penguins started a game on the mound. The group was dealt a difficult hand down the stretch as all three of its regular weekend starters from earlier in the season went out with injuries. Right-hander Greg Dunham and lefty Collin Floyd, who were the team’s top-two arms for most of the season, each made just one start in May before being shut down. Additionally, Zach Lopatka, who was the team’s Sunday starter for a majority of the campaign, was sidelined in late April.

Off-The-Field Accolades: YSU was recognized as a recipient of the American Baseball Coaches Association’s Team Academic Excellence Award for the 2017–18 academic year. The award honors programs coached by ABCA members that post a GPA over 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. YSU was one of 46 NCAA Division I programs and the only member of the Horizon League to be honored. The 2017–18 YSU baseball team was also recognized for its outstanding work in the community. The team was named as YSU’s recipient of the Horizon League Team Community Outreach Award. The group accumulated over 400 community service/outreach hours during the academic year as players and coaches volunteered at a number of events and with various organizations in the Youngstown area.

Dan Bertolini, a Youngstown native with a proven record of winning and recruiting talented players from the region, is in his third season as head coach of the YSU baseball program. He is the ninth head coach in Penguins history. Bertolini came to YSU after spending the previous eight seasons developing the program at Mercyhurst North East into a consistent winner at the national level. The Saints averaged more than 29 wins over his eight seasons and won at least 30 games in four of his last five years. He was the winningest coach in school history. In his first year at YSU, Bertolini injected a new energy into the program. The Penguins won more games during the 2017 regular season than in five of the previous six years. Additionally, YSU tied for its most Horizon League wins since 2009, and earned a pair of road wins over ranked opponents. The Penguins’ offense was notably improved in Bertolini’s first campaign. YSU averaged almost a full run more per game than in 2016 and averaged more runs per game than in five of the previous six seasons. YSU batted 31 points higher and hit an eye-popping 38 more home runs than in 2016. After the regular season, only three teams in the country had improved their home run total from 2016 more than YSU. Defensively, YSU’s .966 fielding percentage was its best in program history. In Bertolini’s second season, the Penguins surpassed their 2017 win totals with 18 overall wins and 10 league victories. The 18 total wins were the program’s most since 2010, and YSU notched its first Horizon League Tournament victory since it won the championship in 2014. YSU had seven players garner postseason Horizon League honors in 2018, matching the most in school history. YSU had another impressive season on offense, drawing a league-best 272 walks and shattering the previous school record of 234 that was set in 2013. YSU also stole 86 bases, which ranked second in the league and tied for the second-most in a season in school history. It marked the first time the Penguins stole at least 80 bases in a season since 1998. The Penguins also hit 44 home runs as a team in 2018, which ranked second in the league and as the third-most in a season in school history. It also marked the first time in school history they have hit at least 40 homers in back-to-back seasons. YSU pitchers recorded 399 strikeouts, the fourth-best single-season total in program history. Bertolini is a 2004 graduate of Poland High School and played collegiately at Mercyhurst, where he was a four-year starter and set school records for games started, games played and consecutive games played from 2005-08. Bertolini and his wife Breanna, who played lacrosse at Mercyhurst, have a daughter named Eloise and a son named Hawkins.

Bertolini’s BioHead Coach • Third Season

Experienced Core: YSU returns 19 letterwinners and a total of 22 players who were with the program last year. That is a stark contrast from 2018, when 23 of the team’s 35 players were newcomers. The Penguins return six position players who made at least 30 starts last season, and two more who started more than 20 times. In addition to Blaze Glenn, Lucas Nasonti and Jeff Wehler, senior C Nick Caruso senior OF/IF Web Charles and senior IF Drew Dickerson each started more than 30 times in 2018. Caruso started 36 games behind the plate while Charles made 38 starts — 32 at third base, three at second and three in left field. Charles has now played in 121 games in his three-plus seasons at YSU. Dickerson started 52 times at second base last year, ranking third on the team with a .280 batting average and 54 hits. He also recorded 15 multi-hit games, and batted .283 in Horizon League play. Junior IF Cody Dennis started 27 games at shortstop before suffering a season-ending injury while senior P/OF Zach Lopatka started 14 games in left field and nine as the designated hitter before also being lost to injury.

Talented Group of Newcomers: A group of 13 newcomers includes nine true freshmen, two transfers and a pair of sophomores in their first season. D1Baseball.com projected freshman P/IF Travis Perry to be the Horizon League Freshman of the Year in its 2019 conference preview. Coming out of Rocky Grove High School, Perry was ranked the No. 24 overall prospect in the state of Pennsylvania and the No. 9 pitcher by Prep Baseball Report. Senior 1B Trevor Wiersma, a graduate transfer from Division II Concord University, hit at least .320 in each of his three seasons with the Mountain Lions. He was a first-team all-conference selection in 2016 and 2017. Sophomore right-hander Cade Negley joins YSU after spending his freshman year at Santa Clara in 2018. He appeared in 18 games out of the bullpen and started once, finishing with a 1-0 record and a save. Sophomore OF Zach Farrar is in his first season with the program after playing wide receiver for the YSU football team this past fall. He was a two-sport star in high school, and was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 2016 MLB Draft.

YSU on YSN: The YSU Athletic Department has teamed up with Youngstown-area sports website Your Sports Network (YSNLive.com) to broadcast Youngstown State baseball games for the upcoming 2019 season. YSN will stream all 22 of the Penguins’ scheduled home games and select road contests. The partnership marks the first trek into the collegiate ranks for the streaming company, which currently serves as the sports broadcast home for more than 20 schools and six organizations in the Youngstown area. Each broadcast will feature streaming audio, and a static video stream from behind home plate will be available for home games at Eastwood Field. Students from YSU’s Sports Broadcasting program will have the opportunity to handle play-by-play and color analyst duties along with members of YSNLive.com. All live broadcasts will be free for fans with archived versions available for purchase.
