TOM-munication

A. INTRODUCTIONOver the history of communication, language has evolved and changed to create new meaning, reflectnew contexts and to allow us to share our ideas in new ways. New words and language featuresevolve when new ideas need to be communicated. Nowadays, changes in society are happeningmore swiftly, communication is struggling to keep up and the available language features are nolonger enough. It’s now time for a creative new language feature …

B. CHALLENGEYour team, the TOM - munication Group (Telling Our Meaning - munication) has been given the taskof developing a new language feature. Each member of your team is an expert in a specific languagefeature or communication style, and together you have a great range of communication techniquesmaking your team a highly talented language group. Language features team members representmust include Spoonerism, Malapropism, Emoji and Alliteration. The remaining team members areable to choose their own language feature. Each language feature represented by a team membermust be used meaningfully throughout the presentation. How will your team select the new languagefeature? What will it be?

C. PRESENTATION AND SCORING

During your presentation, your team should endeavour to:

1 Context Explain clearly the need for a new language feature

0 - 20 points

2 Development Process Outline creatively the collaborative development, trial and refinement of the new language feature

0 - 40 points

3 Use Language for Meaning and Effect Demonstrate each team member’s expertise in their own language feature by naturally weaving it into the performance.

0 - 40 points

4 Language in Context Use the newly developed language feature effectively in the presentation

0 - 30 points

5 Characteristics Show quality of new language feature - creative name, definition and suggested use

Calliope’s Carousel Conundrum

A. INTRODUCTIONThe number of animal species which are endangered continues to increase exponentially every year. Last year there were over 26,500 species threatened by extinction. Changes to environment and climate, as well as human overcrowding all have their impact. It is vital to gain knowledge of these species, in case they eventually become extinct. Calliope (a company that is collecting DNA from endangered animals and storing for future use) is building a machine to use for this purpose.

B. CHALLENGEYour team is working on building the CCC- Calliope Collection Carousel machine. You are to build a working model of the CCC machine which will carry the species through the DNA collection point. You will need to create and place models of endangered species on the machine and demonstrate at least three complete full circuits or rotations. The carousel is required to carry at least 5 different endangered species simultaneously. Your team needs to justify the reasons for choosing the endangered species on your carousel and why their DNA must be collected, based on plausible scientific research.Your team will also need to create an ICT virtual model demonstrating how this machine could collect and store the DNA for safe keeping. The virtual model could also assist in the explanation of the mathematical calculations of how long it would take for all species on the current endangered list to be DNA sampled. (Ensure you stay within the ICT usage limits as per the Instruction Manual)

C. PRESENTATION AND SCORING

During your presentation, your team should endeavour to:

1 JUSTIFICATION: Scientifically justify your choice of endangered species and the reasoning for the collection of DNA and its future usage.

0 - 40 points

2 ICT SKILLS: Show the judges your creative use of ICT to clearly demonstrate and help explain, through the use of a virtual model, how the machine collects and stores the DNA for safe keeping.

0 - 40 points

3 ENGINEERING SKILLS: Present a robust model that is able to successfully carry out at least three revolutions with 5 species on it, without being touched. Provide an explanation of how it works.

0 - 30 points

Page 16: 2019 WA Challenge Pack

WA Regional Final 2019 STEM

© Copyright 2019 Tournament of Minds Ltd. 3

4 MATHEMATICAL KNOWLEDGE: Using the number of species your CCC can handle simultaneously and how fast it would rotate: Demonstrate the calculations for how long it may take for your team’s CCC machine to collect DNA from the all the species on the current endangered list. Include how the machine may need to be scaled up for the best use of sampling time.

0 - 40 points

5 CREATIVE DESIGN of MODEL: Demonstration of a model with an original creative design.

0 - 20 points

Before you commence your presentation, you must present the following written information to the judges:

• Script

• Completed copies of the Outside Assistance Form and Presentation Skills Form

• Any other required written material

Maximum score possible: 170 points

NB: Definition of STEM understandings: include information in relation to the identification of a problem, the designing of a solution, building, testing and re-design of the solution (if required). These skills and principles require the understanding of science (concepts and inquiry skills), technology (all technology not just ICT) used, engineering principles (including planning, designing, building and reporting) and mathematical knowledge in an integrated manner.

D. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS CHALLENGE

1. There are no restrictions on what can or can’t be used in the construction of the model; these are available for any aspect of the presentation, as teams may wish. Any materials are allowed, within the cost constraints, but the effective and creative use of recycled materials will gain additional points.

2. Take into account all safety measures when creating and testing the model.

DI. LIMITATIONSRefer also to those listed in the 2019 Instruction Manual.

1. The total time for setting up, performing the Challenge solution and clearing away is ten minutes.

2. The judges or room monitor will indicate when your performance time is to begin and when nine minutes have elapsed. At ten minutes your performance will be stopped.

3. A minimum of four team members must be within the performance area at all times.

4. The team members who are performing must be visibly inside the 3m x 3m performance area.

5. Only items listed under ‘Allowable Materials’ may be used for costumes and props.

6. Overall costs are limited to $75.00 in accordance with the 2019 Instruction Manual.
