XXXXWELCOME MAP

Welcome to the State Final of the 2019 AFL Schools Cup!

In the inaugural year competition, the AFL Schools Cup aims to provide secondary students across New South Wales and the ACT with a pathway to participate in Australian Rules Football and compete against students from other regions.

Formerly known as the U15 and Opens Swans Cup or GIANTS Cup (region dependent), the re-brand AFL Schools Cup invites players from years 7 and 8 to represent their school for ultimate footy bragging rights.

The AFL Schools Cup has been remodelled to ensure a pathway following the Paul Kelly Cup – Australia’s largest AFL primary school competition. With the Paul Kelly Cup open to Years 5 and 6, the AFL Schools Cup will provide the next step in the youth AFL Schools journey.

We are excited to host the State Final for year 7 and 8 students at the prestigious

UNSW Canberra Oval (Manuka Oval) in Manuka, a venue that has a rich and diverse history starting back as early as the 1920s, and is now home to the GIANTS for three matches during the AFL Premiership Season.

Thank you to the teachers, coaches and parents for supporting the competition and for the many hours you put in each week to organise the team, training sessions, and ensuring the State Final is possible.

To the umpires and students participating in the State Final we wish you all the best and we look forward to seeing your talent on show. Play fair, play within the spirit of competition, respect the umpires, but most of all, have fun and enjoy the experience!

If you have any questions on the day, please do not hesitate to approach an AFL NSW/ACT staff member.

Yours in footy,

Adriana Harpas AFL NSW/ACT Participation Operations Lead

PLAYERS TO WATCHPLAYERS

TO WATCH

Katie Taylor a current Junior Magpie showed dominance in the forward line during the ACT Schools Championship. Her calm nature, speed and agility will keep her

opponents on their toes in the Schools Cup. Katie lead Canberra High in goals kicked and kicked the team to victory in extra time in the Grand final against

Alfred Deakin.

Mikaela Von Renaurd is also a current Junior Magpie. She is agile, quick and plays in the midfield. Mikaela shows an excellent understanding of the game and

will run all day. Although she is quiet by nature, Mikaela will lead the team by example, showing fantastic ball skills and creating many scoring opportunities.

Brinley Gentle. Brin is a dynamic forward and midfielder that leads by example through her energy and two way running, which drives the team in attack. An excellent shot at goal, Brin is never afraid to take responsibility to make things happen for the team, always providing an option or setting up the winning play

Gabby Tzaros. Best on ground in the playoff against Central Coast Adventist, Gabby is dynamic back that always delivers when called upon. An excellent

intercept marker who isn’t afraid of the tough work, always putting her body on the line for the benefit of the team.

Sienna Yeo. An overall outstanding athlete. Her passion for competition allows her to keep fighting hard all game for the ball. She competed and excelled in opens from year 7 and continues to be a shining light in the team despite her age and height. Sienna’s hardest thing she will have to do over the next couple of years

will be which sport she is going to pick to stick with as she is the perfect all round athlete.

Charlie Maskell. Charlie plays for Ainslie Football Club in Canberra AFL U14 comp. Charlie possesses incredible athletic ability. He is a powerful, fast and versatile player able to play as a ruckman, key position player or onballer. Charlie has a prodigiously long kick for a 14YO, as he regularly kicks the ball 50+ metres. He

was easily best on ground in the ACT schools final and is also an outstanding track athlete breaking multiple school record at our school carnival. Definitely a player

to watch

Oliver Withers. A tough and uncompromising midfielder. Oli is a ball magnet who knows where to be at the right time. He is good on the ground and in the air and

provides a tough edge to any team. Oli rarely has a poor game and somehow manages to rack up possessions all over the ground where ever he plays.

Jai Van Camp. Provides great running in attack but can also shut down the opposition’s best player. That two-way ability is a real strength of his, and that’s

why he’s such an important part of the LCCC team.

Will Kellar. His ability to hit packs at speed, read the play, get his opponent on the lead, and finish off around goal under pressure are his strengths.

Declan Fitzpatrick. Declan is the Captain of the Rosebank Boys Junior AFL team for 2019. He is a current member of the Sydney Swans Junior Academy and can play

any position on the field, however is particularly useful in the centre where he lays a strong platform for many attacking raids.

Marcus Dolfo. Marcus is a rugby league player who has successfully changed to AFL in the last 3 months. Many of the skills such as running, kicking and special

awareness have transferred over to AFL and whilst he is still learning, he played a pivotal role in the regional championships win.
