Upon graduation from Columbia University,
Jill Bonovitz taught children with special
needs in New York City. She moved back to
her hometown of Philadelphia, and studied at
Moore College of Art & Design. In 1974 with
four other Moore-affiliated artists, Bonovitz
founded The Clay Studio, an institution that
has become a vital and material ceramic arts
center and plays a key role promoting the
medium and the work of emerging artists
worldwide.
Bonovitz’s practice started in clay where her
porcelain works explored the intersections
of line, shape, translucency and aestheticism.
Later in her career, she experimented with
wire, and now works with both me-
dia. Bonovitz has been in both solo and
group exhibitions nationally and internation-
ally, including: the Honolulu Museum of Art (2018), Hermitage State Museum, St. Peters-
burg, Russia (2014), and Santa Monica Muse-
um of Art (2005). Her work is included in
the collections of The Hermitage Museum,
Philadelphia Museum of Art, Stedelijk Muse-
um in Amsterdam, among others.
She and her husband Sheldon were early
collectors in the field of Outsider Art, and in
2013 donated more than 200 works to the
Philadelphia Museum of Art. Bonovitz has
served on the boards of the Merce Cunning-
ham Dance Company and The Clay Studio
and she is currently vice president of The
Fabric Workshop and Museum.
June Kelly is the owner and director of June
Kelly Gallery in the historic SoHo district of
New York City. Established in 1987, the
gallery specializes in contemporary paintings,
drawings, sculpture and photography by
emerging, mid-career and established artists.
The gallery was elected to membership in the
prestigious Art Dealers Association of Amer-
ica in 1996, and exhibits periodically in the
annual ADAA art show.
Before opening the gallery, Kelly managed
the career of artist Romare Bearden for 13
years until his death in 1988. She presented
on Bearden at a 2004 National Gallery of Art
event, and in 2005 at the Metropolitan Muse-
um of Art with jazz critic and author Albert
Murray. In 2006, Kelly organized an exhibi-
tion of artist Hughie Lee-Smith’s works at
the Governor’s Mansion, Tallahassee, FL, and hosted the first solo exhibition of paintings
and watercolors by Nobel Prize–winning
poet, playwright and essayist Derek Walcott.
A board trustee of Pratt Institute, Kelly re-
ceived the 2006 Lifetime Achievement Award
by The Black Alumni of Pratt. She also won
The Pen and Brush’s 2004 June Jordan award,
and is a member of the Fine Arts Work Cen-
ter in Provincetown, the ArtTable, Inc. and
Women’s Forum Inc. Kelly received a BS
from New York University and did post-
graduate art history work at Hunter College.

MEET THE 2019
VISIONARY WOMAN AWARDS HONOREES
The Visionary Woman Awards are presented to women who have had major impacts in their fields, ex-
emplifying excellence in the visual arts and design, arts advocacy or philanthropy. Awardees spend a day at
Moore speaking and meeting with students and faculty over lunch and in the classrooms or studios. They
share their insights and experiences with the public in the free Elizabeth Greenfield Zeidman Lecture. A tick-
eted evening gala event brings 250 guests to Moore to honor the awardees and to support scholarships for
our undergraduate students in the Visionary Woman Honors Program.
The Visionary Woman Honors Program is a select program developed for highly ambitious, motivated,
reflective and independent-minded students who want to enrich their Moore experiences both inside and
outside the classroom. Students admitted to the four-year program receive a scholarship up to $22,000 per
year and participate in a leadership or academic pathway to enhance their professional and personal develop-
ment. They attend special seminars and conferences, participate in intern- and externships with community
organizations and companies and shadow mentors. Students on the academic pathway complete a thesis
project.
The power of the Visionary Woman Honors scholarship is undeniable. A recent Moore alumni and current
student survey of Visionary Woman scholars found that more than 85 percent felt Moore helped them to
take risks, effectively communicate about their art and succeed in the creative workforce
